For a typical 1080p30 H.264 YouTube live stream, set the video bitrate to 14 Mbps. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom, so aim for about 17.5 Mbps of stable measured upload capacity for that stream. For 1080p60 H.264, the recommended bitrate is 17 Mbps; with the same headroom, aim for about 21.25 Mbps. These capacity targets are calculations from YouTube’s guidance, not Airtel upload-speed guarantees.
Choose a bitrate for your resolution, frame rate and codec
YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate depends on the stream’s ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are for H.264; they are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees that a connection can sustain them. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply an H.264 figure to another codec.

For a continuously running channel, choose a supported resolution and frame rate that your measured connection can maintain, rather than selecting the highest setting your Airtel plan advertises.

Calculate the upload capacity to target
YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom between the total stream bitrate and available upload bandwidth. As a practical calculation, divide the planned stream bitrate by 0.8:

- 1080p30 H.264: 14 Mbps ÷ 0.8 = about 17.5 Mbps of available upload.
- 1080p60 H.264: 17 Mbps ÷ 0.8 = about 21.25 Mbps of available upload.
- 720p30 or 720p60 H.264: 8 Mbps ÷ 0.8 = 10 Mbps of available upload.
These targets apply to one stream and use YouTube’s recommended margin. If you run a backup stream, include its bitrate too. Also allow for audio and other upload activity: YouTube’s guidance is to keep total stream bitrate within available upload and account for primary and backup streams plus headroom where applicable. The 20% calculation is not a separate Airtel service guarantee.
Test the Airtel connection where the encoder will run
Airtel India’s public broadband page advertises plans of up to 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1024 Mbps, with availability varying by location. Those advertised plan speeds do not establish the sustained upload capacity available to a particular encoder at home. YouTube cautions that download is often faster than upload and that other people sharing the network can limit the connection. See Airtel’s broadband plans and test actual outbound upload rather than inferring it from a plan tier.

- Connect the encoder at its intended location and use the same network connection you plan to stream on.
- Measure outbound upload capacity at different times under representative household use. A single speed test is only a snapshot; account for other devices and upload activity.
- Run a private or unlisted rehearsal at the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- If upload varies or stream health is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution and repeat the rehearsal until the stream has consistent margin.
YouTube recommends testing outbound bandwidth and using a reliable network because connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Its published advice is: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Use YouTube’s relevant encoder settings
For the live encoder, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS ingestion, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set these alongside the bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. Account for Airtel’s data-use terms over 24 hours
A constant 14 Mbps stream transfers about 151.2 GB per day, or about 4.54 TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and other household usage. This is a calculation from 14 megabits per second multiplied by time and divided by eight, not a published Airtel or YouTube statistic.
Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms state a Fair Usage Policy threshold of 3333 GB in a billing cycle, after which speed is reduced to 1 Mbps; the terms also say Airtel may amend the policy. A constant 14 Mbps stream would exceed that stated threshold in a billing cycle if it applies to the account and the bitrate remains constant. Airtel’s plan page describes plans as unlimited, but that wording should be read alongside the detailed terms and the current terms attached to your plan. Check Airtel’s Xstream Fiber terms for the terms that apply to your account.

What to do if the stream is unstable
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check actual upload at the encoder’s location and reduce bitrate or resolution if there is not enough sustained capacity and headroom.
- The stream drops when others use the network: Re-test under realistic household load; shared use can reduce upload available to the encoder.
- A speed test looks good but a long stream fails: A test is a snapshot, not proof of all-day stability. Rehearse for a representative period and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
- The line is fast enough but monthly use is a concern: Estimate transfer from the configured bitrate and compare it with your current Airtel billing-cycle FUP terms, including other household use.
- The configured settings do not match the recommendation: Confirm codec, resolution and frame rate first; then set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
