1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThere was not just one Bethesda giveaway. Bethesda promoted a Fallout 3 giveaway on the Epic Games Store from October 20–27, 2022, and separately ran a Dishonored 10th-anniversary promotion from October 10–23, 2022. If you missed either—or cannot identify which promotion the headline refers to—the best replacement depends on the experience you want: open-ended fantasy, post-apocalyptic solo exploration, online multiplayer, science-fiction, or fast-paced action.
First, identify which giveaway you missed
The phrase “the free giveaway” is ambiguous. Bethesda’s official announcements document at least two separate October 2022 promotions, so a recommendation should not assume that the missed game was Fallout 3 or Dishonored.

| Promotion | What was offered | Dates stated by Bethesda | What that means now |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fallout anniversary promotion | Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition, including its downloadable content expansions | October 20–27, 2022 | This was a time-limited Epic Games Store claim. Missing the claim window does not create a permanent free entitlement. |
| Dishonored 10th anniversary promotion | A separate anniversary giveaway and access campaign for the Dishonored franchise | October 10–23, 2022 | Bethesda said the franchise was available through Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass and eligible Xbox cloud gaming at that time. That historical access does not guarantee that the games remain in a current catalog. |
If you still have the original store account, search its library before buying anything. A giveaway claim normally remains attached to the account even after the public promotion ends, while an unclaimed offer does not. If the game is absent, choose a substitute by play style rather than by trying to recreate an unknown deal.
Quick recommendations by the experience you want
| If you want… | Start with | Why it fits | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-ended fantasy role-playing | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | Bethesda presents it as the fifth Elder Scrolls game, with broad gameplay freedom and PC modding and sharing. | It is a fantasy alternative, not a direct replacement for a post-apocalyptic game. |
| Post-apocalyptic solo exploration | Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 | Both are described by Bethesda around exploration and survival in a world shaped by nuclear war. | The available official descriptions do not establish a neutral head-to-head winner, so choose based on setting and the edition available to you. |
| Online play with other people | Fallout 76 | Bethesda describes it as an online prequel in which other survivors are real players who can cooperate or play independently. | It is not the right substitute if you specifically want a strictly single-player campaign. |
| A current Bethesda-listed science-fiction game | Starfield | It is one of the titles shown on Bethesda’s current Deals page and is built around a new science-fiction universe. | The Deals page listing confirms current presentation, not a free offer or the closest match for an unspecified giveaway. |
| Current Bethesda-listed action | DOOM: The Dark Ages | It also appears among the trending titles on the Deals page for readers who prefer direct, fast-paced action. | Its genre and pacing differ substantially from Fallout, Skyrim and Dishonored. |
Best for open-ended fantasy: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the strongest starting point when what attracted you to Bethesda was freedom in a fantasy world. Bethesda identifies it as the fifth entry in The Elder Scrolls series and emphasizes broad gameplay possibilities, along with PC modding and sharing. That combination makes it a practical choice for players who want to decide how to approach a playthrough instead of following a narrowly defined route.

Why choose it after missing Fallout 3
Skyrim changes the setting from a nuclear wasteland to high fantasy, so it is not a story substitute for Fallout 3. It is an experience substitute for the underlying Bethesda formula: a large world, self-directed objectives and room to shape a character over time. If your reason for wanting the giveaway was simply to try a major Bethesda role-playing game, Skyrim is the clearest genre change that still preserves that sense of personal direction.
Modding and platform considerations
Bethesda specifically highlights PC modding and sharing. That makes the PC version particularly relevant if you enjoy changing visuals, systems or community-made content. Mod availability, installation methods and supported features vary by platform and edition, so check the storefront listing and the game’s current requirements before purchasing. Do not assume that a mod shown in a video is available on every console or edition.
How its publisher-reported popularity should be read
Bethesda Game Studios says Skyrim has sold more than 20 million copies. The studio page does not date that figure, and it is a publisher-reported historical claim rather than a current sales measurement or an independent quality score. It helps explain why Skyrim is a common entry point, but it does not prove that it is the right game for every reader.
Best for post-apocalyptic solo exploration: Fallout 3 or Fallout 4
If the missed promotion was the 2022 Epic Games Store offer, the most direct alternatives are other Fallout games. Bethesda describes Fallout 3 as exploration across open wastes more than 200 years after nuclear war. It describes Fallout 4 around survival and exploration in the post-nuclear Commonwealth. Both therefore fit a reader seeking a single-player journey through a damaged world, but the official descriptions do not provide a neutral comparison that ranks one above the other.

Choose Fallout 3 when you want the game that was actually given away
Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition was the title Bethesda said was free on the Epic Games Store from October 20 through October 27, 2022, with its downloadable content expansions included. If you missed claiming it, buying that same edition—where it is legally sold and compatible with your system—is the closest possible substitute in terms of title and included content. The giveaway date is historical; it should not be read as a current promotion.
Choose Fallout 4 when you want another solo Commonwealth-scale adventure
Fallout 4 is the alternative when you want Bethesda’s post-nuclear setting but are looking at a different entry. Bethesda’s description centers on survival and exploration of the Commonwealth, making it a reasonable recommendation for someone who wants a more recent starting point within the same broad premise. Verify the exact edition before buying, because standard and expanded editions can differ in included downloadable content and platform support.
Do not treat publisher statistics as a review score
Bethesda’s studio page reports more than 470,000 concurrent players for Fallout 4 on Steam and more than 160 E3 awards. The page does not date those figures. They are historical numbers supplied by the publisher, not current player counts, independent awards analysis or proof that Fallout 4 will suit your preferences.
Best for online multiplayer: Fallout 76
Fallout 76 is the appropriate choice if the appeal of the Fallout setting includes meeting other players. Bethesda describes it as an online prequel in which the other surviving people are real players; players may work together or choose not to. That premise makes it fundamentally different from a solo Fallout purchase.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When it is a good substitute
- Choose it if you want a shared world and the option to cooperate with friends or other players.
- Choose it if an online prequel sounds more appealing than replaying a fixed single-player campaign.
- Choose it if you are comfortable with an internet connection and the platform’s online-service requirements.
When to choose Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 instead
Select a single-player Fallout entry if you want to explore at your own pace without other human players, online matchmaking or service availability affecting the experience. Do not buy Fallout 76 expecting it to reproduce the structure of the 2022 giveaway; its online design is the defining difference.
Current Bethesda-listed options: Starfield and DOOM: The Dark Ages
Bethesda’s Deals page showed “No Current Deals” when checked on October 13, 2026. The same page presented trending titles including Starfield, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, DOOM: The Dark Ages, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Fallout 76 and The Elder Scrolls Online. A trending listing is not a promise of a discount, free claim or availability in every country and storefront. Recheck the page and your local store immediately before purchase.
Starfield for science-fiction exploration
Starfield is the science-fiction option in this group. Bethesda Game Studios calls it its first new universe in 25 years. That is a description of the studio’s publishing history, not a guarantee that the game resembles Fallout or Skyrim. Pick it when you want a new setting and science-fiction premise; do not choose it merely because it appears on the Deals page.
The studio page also reports 10 million players in less than three weeks after launch. Bethesda does not date that figure on the page, so it should be treated as a publisher-reported historical launch claim rather than a current active-player count.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
DOOM: The Dark Ages for action instead of role-playing
DOOM: The Dark Ages is the better fit for readers who want immediate action rather than an open-ended role-playing structure. Its presence on the current Deals page establishes that Bethesda is highlighting it, but the page does not establish a discount or make it a direct substitute for any unidentified giveaway.
Other titles shown as trending
Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and The Elder Scrolls Online are also displayed among the page’s trending titles. Consider them only after checking the store page for your country, edition details, platform support and whether the listing is a sale, a standard catalog entry or another type of promotion. The page’s platform counts do not guarantee access in every region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the missed promotion was Dishonored
Bethesda’s October 2022 Dishonored anniversary announcement was separate from the Fallout 3 promotion. It described a giveaway running October 10–23, 2022, and said the entire franchise was available through Xbox Game Pass, PC Game Pass and eligible Xbox cloud gaming at that time.

How to choose without knowing the original game
- Check your existing libraries. Search Epic Games Store, Xbox, PC and any other account you used in October 2022. A claimed game may already be available even if the public giveaway page has disappeared.
- Decide whether you want solo or online play. Pick Fallout 76 only when its real-player, shared-world premise is welcome. Pick Skyrim, Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 for a primarily solo starting point.
- Choose the setting. Select fantasy for Skyrim, post-apocalyptic exploration for Fallout 3 or Fallout 4, science fiction for Starfield, and action-focused play for DOOM: The Dark Ages.
- Check the exact edition. Confirm whether downloadable content, anniversary upgrades or remastered content is included. The Fallout 3 giveaway specified the Game of the Year Edition and its DLC; a current listing may use a different name.
- Confirm platform and region. Bethesda’s Deals page displays platform counts for several entries, but those counts do not promise availability in your country or every storefront. Read the local store listing and system requirements.
- Check the current offer. “No Current Deals” was the page status on October 13, 2026. Prices, subscriptions and promotions can change after that date, so verify the live listing rather than relying on an old screenshot or search result.
What the publisher’s numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Bethesda Game Studios presents several historical figures on its studio page: more than 20 million copies sold for Skyrim, more than 470,000 concurrent Steam players for Fallout 4, more than 160 E3 awards for Fallout 4, and 10 million Starfield players in less than three weeks. The page does not date several of these statements. They are useful context for the scale of the games, but they are not a current popularity table, a controlled comparison or an independent recommendation.
The same caution applies to Bethesda’s description of The Elder Scrolls VI as “The highly-anticipated next chapter in the iconic The Elder Scrolls series.” That is publisher wording about an announced project, not evidence that it is a substitute for any game in this guide.
Buying and availability checklist
- Verify the platform: PC, Xbox or another supported system.
- Verify the edition name and included downloadable content.
- Check whether the listing is a purchase, subscription entitlement, cloud-streaming option or time-limited promotion.
- Confirm regional availability and language options on the local storefront.
- For online games, confirm that your platform account and subscription meet the current multiplayer requirements.
- For PC modding, check the edition and platform’s current mod support before assuming a community mod will work.
- Do not infer a current price from a 2022 giveaway or from a publisher-reported sales figure.
Bottom line: the best pick depends on the missing experience
Because the headline does not identify the giveaway, there is no single objectively correct replacement. Choose Skyrim for open-ended fantasy and PC modding interest; choose Fallout 3 if you want the exact game from the October 2022 Epic promotion; choose Fallout 4 for another post-apocalyptic solo adventure; choose Fallout 76 for an online world with real players; choose Starfield for science fiction; and choose DOOM: The Dark Ages for action. Check the live Bethesda Deals page and your local storefront before paying, because the page reported no current deals on October 13, 2026 and catalog status can change.
