Best Beginner Turntables With Built-In Phono Preamps

The easiest documented starting point is the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X. It is a fully automatic, two-speed belt-drive turntable with a switchable built-in phono preamp, a replaceable stylus, a dust cover and the cables needed for a basic wired connection. Fluance’s RT80 and RT81 are alternatives with internal preamps and bypass switches. The U-Turn Orbit Plus can include a built-in Pluto 2 preamp, but only in the configuration that adds it.

A built-in phono preamp solves one part of a record system: it raises the cartridge’s very low signal to line level and applies the required equalization. You still need powered speakers, or an amplifier/receiver plus passive speakers. A turntable with a preamp does not contain speakers or a power amplifier.

What a built-in phono preamp actually does

A phono cartridge produces a signal that is much quieter and electrically different from the output expected by a normal line input. A phono preamp provides the gain and equalization needed to convert that signal to line level. Once the turntable is set to its line output, its RCA cables can feed a compatible line input such as AUX, LINE or CD on powered speakers, an amplifier or a receiver.

The preamp does not replace the rest of the audio system. Powered speakers contain their own amplifier; passive speakers require a separate amplifier or receiver. Fluance states that its turntables do not include speakers, and the same system requirement applies to the other models here.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If your amplifier has a dedicated PHONO input, you can normally bypass an internal preamp and let the amplifier perform the phono-stage work. If the amplifier has only line inputs, keep the turntable’s preamp switched on or add an external phono preamp. Connecting a phono-level output directly to a line input usually produces very quiet, thin sound; sending a pre-amplified line output into a PHONO input can overload the input.

This is a configuration and use-case comparison, not an independently tested sound-quality ranking. Manufacturer specifications describe the products, while stock, bundles and regional model names can change.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60X: the simplest documented starting point

The AT-LP60X is the clearest fit for a beginner who wants the turntable to handle the record-starting sequence. Its fully automatic belt-drive mechanism starts the platter, moves the tonearm to the record and returns it when playback ends. You can select 33-1/3 or 45 RPM for standard LPs and singles.

Its built-in phono preamp is switchable. Set the output to LINE when connecting to powered speakers or an amplifier’s AUX, LINE or CD input. Set it to PHONO only when using a receiver or external phono stage that expects an unamplified phono signal. The detachable RCA output cable makes replacement or rearrangement straightforward, and the hinged dust cover is included.

What the published specifications mean

  • Audio-Technica specifies wow and flutter below 0.25% weighted at 3 kHz.
  • The stated signal-to-noise ratio is above 50 dB, measured to DIN-B.
  • Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative laboratory results against the other models in this guide.

The cartridge is integrated into the headshell rather than presented as a conventional user-swappable cartridge assembly. The stylus is replaceable, and Audio-Technica identifies the ATN3600LC as the replacement designation. Confirm the exact stylus and regional part number before ordering, particularly if a retailer lists several AT-LP60 variants.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when automatic start and return matter more than manual tonearm adjustment.
  • Choose it when you want a dust cover and a line-level output without buying a separate phono stage.
  • Plan for powered speakers or an amplifier and passive speakers; neither is built into the turntable.

Its specifications establish a straightforward entry-level feature set. They do not establish that it is universally the best-sounding, most durable or best-value turntable for every system.

Fluance RT80 and RT81: internal preamps with a more component-like layout

Fluance identifies both the RT80 and RT81 as having internal phono preamps. That lets either model connect directly to powered speakers or to a normal line input on an amplifier or receiver. The preamp can be bypassed when you want to use a receiver’s dedicated PHONO input or a separate phono stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RT80

The RT80 includes an AT91 cartridge, according to Fluance’s comparison information. It is a manual turntable, so you place the tonearm on the record and return it at the end. Confirm the speed controls, included accessories and current regional bundle before purchase, since listings can differ by market.

RT81

The RT81 adds an AT95E cartridge and a solid MDF plinth in Fluance’s comparison. Those are hardware distinctions from the RT80, not independent evidence of a universal sound-quality advantage. Like the RT80, it has an internal preamp that can be bypassed and can feed powered speakers without an external phono box.

Choosing between the two

Question RT80 RT81
Internal preamp Yes; bypassable Yes; bypassable
Cartridge named by Fluance AT91 AT95E
Plinth distinction in Fluance’s comparison Not stated as the RT81’s solid MDF upgrade Solid MDF plinth
Connection to powered speakers Supported with the preamp enabled Supported with the preamp enabled

Select the RT81 when its specified cartridge and plinth are worth the added cost in the actual listing. Select the RT80 when you want the same basic preamp convenience with a simpler configuration. Do not assume the RT80 or RT81 includes speakers.

Why the Fluance RT82–RT85 models do not meet the same requirement

Fluance says its RT82 through RT85 Reference models require an external phono preamp or an amplifier/receiver with a PHONO input. They may offer other component upgrades, but they are not drop-in choices for a system that has only line inputs and no separate phono stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an easy family-level mistake: a higher model number does not automatically mean the same connectivity plus more features. If you choose one of these models, budget for the missing phono stage and verify that your amplifier, receiver or powered speakers accept the resulting signal.

U-Turn Orbit Plus: verify the exact bundle before ordering

The Orbit Plus is a manual turntable with speed selection between 33 and 45 RPM, an RCA output and an optional built-in Pluto 2 phono preamp. The word optional is decisive: the no-preamp version requires an amplifier with a PHONO input or an external phono preamp.

How to check the listing

  1. Read the configuration or bundle name rather than relying on the Orbit Plus family name alone.
  2. Confirm that the selected option explicitly includes the built-in Pluto 2 preamp if your speakers or amplifier have only line inputs.
  3. Check whether the package includes the cartridge, dust cover and cables you expect; accessories can vary by bundle.
  4. Make sure your system has powered speakers or separate amplification and passive speakers.

Its manual operation suits listeners who want to cue records themselves. It is not the safest choice for a buyer who wants to order by model name without checking the preamp option.

Sony PS-LX310BT and the model-freshness issue

Sony’s specification page identifies a built-in phono preamp on the PS-LX310BT’s line output. That confirms the key connectivity feature, but the model’s availability and naming are market-dependent.

Current 2026 editorial guides identify the PS-LX3BT as a newer successor or current beginner pick in some markets. The available official information here does not provide the newer model’s full specifications, so do not assume that the PS-LX3BT has identical controls, cartridge serviceability, accessories or connectivity. Check the exact model number, local availability and official specifications before paying for it.

If a retailer still lists the PS-LX310BT, verify that it is the intended regional version and that the included cables, dust cover and output modes match your system. Treat the confirmed built-in preamp as the known point; do not infer a complete comparison from the model name alone.

How to choose the right beginner turntable

1. Decide whether automatic operation matters

Automatic operation reduces the number of actions required to start and stop a record. The AT-LP60X is the documented automatic choice in this group. The Fluance RT80, RT81 and U-Turn Orbit Plus are manual, which means you cue and return the tonearm yourself. Manual operation is not inherently better or worse; it is a handling preference and a setup responsibility.

2. Map the complete signal chain

Write down the equipment you already own. If you have powered speakers with a line input, a turntable with its preamp enabled can connect directly by RCA. If you have a stereo receiver with PHONO input, you can use a turntable’s phono output or bypass an internal preamp. If you have passive speakers only, add an amplifier or receiver. The turntable itself does not supply that power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Confirm the preamp on the exact SKU

Internal preamps are not guaranteed across an entire product family. RT80 and RT81 include them; RT82–RT85 require an external phono stage or PHONO input; Orbit Plus includes one only when the Pluto 2 option is selected. Read the specification and configuration panel immediately before checkout.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

4. Consider stylus and cartridge service

A stylus is a wear item. The AT-LP60X has a manufacturer-named replaceable ATN3600LC stylus. Fluance names the AT91 for the RT80 and AT95E for the RT81. For the Orbit Plus and Sony models, confirm the exact replacement-stylus policy and part number for the chosen bundle or region before buying.

5. Treat a dust cover as a practical requirement if you need one

A cover keeps dust off the platter and tonearm between listening sessions. The AT-LP60X includes a hinged dust cover. For every other model, verify that the cover is included with the specific package rather than assuming the family name guarantees it.

6. Calculate system cost, not turntable cost alone

A low-priced deck can become a more expensive system if it needs an external phono preamp, amplifier, speakers, a replacement stylus or a separately sold cover. Compare like-for-like bundles and include the missing pieces. Current prices, promotions and regional stock change, so a fixed universal price threshold would quickly become misleading.

Setup procedure for a line-level system

  1. Place the turntable. Use a stable, level surface away from speakers and subwoofers to reduce vibration reaching the stylus.
  2. Install the platter and belt as instructed for your model. A belt-drive deck needs the belt seated correctly around the motor pulley and platter.
  3. Remove transport protection. Take off the stylus guard only when you are ready to play and release any tonearm lock specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Connect the RCA cable. Plug the left and right connectors into the turntable’s output and the matching line input on powered speakers or an amplifier.
  5. Set the preamp mode. Select LINE on a turntable with a switchable preamp when using AUX, LINE or CD. Select PHONO only for a dedicated PHONO input or external phono stage.
  6. Connect speakers correctly. Powered speakers connect directly to the line output. Passive speakers connect to the speaker terminals of an amplifier or receiver; never connect passive speakers directly to the turntable.
  7. Select the speed. Use 33-1/3 for LPs and 45 for singles or other 45-RPM records. The Orbit Plus requires manual speed selection; the AT-LP60X provides the two speed choices on the turntable.
  8. Start playback. On the automatic AT-LP60X, use the start control. On a manual model, move the tonearm with the cueing mechanism and lower it gently into the lead-in groove.
  9. Set listening volume at the amplifier or powered speakers. The turntable’s preamp establishes signal level; it is not a speaker-volume control or power amplifier.

Troubleshooting the common beginner problems

No sound or extremely quiet sound

  • Confirm that the amplifier or powered speakers are on the correct AUX, LINE or CD input.
  • For a line input, confirm that the turntable’s preamp switch is set to LINE.
  • If using PHONO mode, confirm that the receiver actually has a PHONO input or that an external phono stage is connected.
  • Check that both RCA plugs are fully inserted and that the amplifier’s balance control is centered.

Loud, distorted or overloaded sound

This usually points to sending a pre-amplified LINE output into a PHONO input. Turn the system off, move the RCA cable to a normal line input and set the turntable to LINE, or bypass the internal preamp and use the PHONO input correctly.

Hum or buzz

Keep the RCA cable away from power adapters and route it without tight coils. Make sure every connector is seated. If the amplifier expects a ground connection, follow that amplifier and turntable’s grounding instructions; not every integrated-preamp model uses a separate ground wire.

The record plays too fast, too slow or at the wrong pitch

Verify the 33-1/3 or 45 setting and make sure the belt is seated correctly. On a manual-speed model, recheck the selected speed before adjusting anything else.

Skipping or mistracking

Check that the stylus guard is removed for playback, the record is clean and flat, and the tonearm setup follows the model’s manual. Replace a worn or damaged stylus with the part specified for that turntable rather than choosing a visually similar substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance that protects the setup

  • Close the dust cover when the turntable is not playing, while leaving it open during playback if the cover or speakers transmit vibration.
  • Brush records and the stylus with products intended for those surfaces; do not touch the stylus tip with fingers.
  • Replace the stylus when it is worn, damaged or no longer tracks correctly. The AT-LP60X’s named replacement is ATN3600LC; verify compatibility before ordering.
  • Keep the turntable level and avoid placing it directly beside a speaker cabinet.
  • Store records vertically in protective sleeves rather than leaning them at an angle for long periods.

Buying checklist

  • Does the exact model or bundle explicitly include a built-in phono preamp?
  • Can the preamp be switched off if you later buy a receiver with a PHONO input?
  • Will the output connect to your existing powered speakers or amplifier?
  • Do you need automatic start and return, or are you comfortable cueing a manual tonearm?
  • Is a dust cover included, and is it the correct cover for the exact model?
  • Can you identify the replacement stylus and buy it in your region?
  • Are the RCA cable, platter, belt and other required accessories included?
  • Have you included the cost of speakers or amplification and any external phono stage in the complete system?
  • Are you checking the current model number, stock and regional specification rather than relying on an older listing?

Bottom line

Choose the AT-LP60X for the most straightforward documented beginner setup: automatic operation, two speeds, switchable line/phono output, a dust cover and a replaceable stylus. Choose the Fluance RT80 or RT81 when you prefer a manual component-style turntable with an internal, bypassable preamp; the RT81 is the version Fluance lists with the AT95E cartridge and solid MDF plinth. Consider the U-Turn Orbit Plus only after confirming that the selected bundle includes the Pluto 2 preamp. Treat Fluance RT82–RT85 and any Sony successor listing as separate verification cases because their phono-stage requirements or specifications differ by model and market.
