The easiest beginner turntable is the one that matches your speakers or stereo without extra boxes. For a straightforward wired system, the Audio-Technica AT-LP60X family is a sensible starting point because it is fully automatic and has a switchable built-in phono equalizer. If you want wireless playback or computer recording, the Sony PS-LX310BT adds Bluetooth and USB while retaining automatic operation.
Before choosing a model, look at the input on the equipment that will play the music. A PHONO input expects the very low-level signal from a cartridge; an AUX/LINE input expects a pre-amplified line-level signal. Your turntable’s output selector or preamp must match that input. The right connection matters more to a simple setup than a longer feature list.

Quick picks for a low-fuss first system
| Turntable | Best fit | Key convenience features | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio-Technica AT-LP60X family | A simple wired setup using powered speakers, an amplifier, or a stereo with an AUX/LINE input | Fully automatic operation, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, built-in phono equalizer, selectable PHONO/LINE output | Choose the wired or Bluetooth variant and verify the exact regional bundle |
| Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT | A listener who wants the AT-LP60X format with Bluetooth playback | Automatic operation, Bluetooth, switchable preamp, integrated cartridge, replaceable stylus | Confirm that your speakers or headphones support the Bluetooth connection you intend to use |
| Sony PS-LX310BT | A setup that benefits from Bluetooth and USB as well as a wired connection | Automatic start, return and stop; Bluetooth; USB; RCA output; built-in phono preamp; 33 1/3 and 45 rpm | It does not play 78 rpm records; Sony also provides gain-selection and Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance |
These are feature-based recommendations from the manufacturers’ documentation, not a hands-on sound-quality ranking. Neither model should be selected on the assumption that it will play 78 rpm records: the cited beginner models are designed for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm discs, and Sony explicitly limits the PS-LX310BT to those two speeds.
Start with the speakers or stereo input
A turntable is only the source. You still need equipment that can amplify the signal and drive speakers. That can be a pair of powered speakers, whose amplifiers are built into the speaker cabinets, or an amplifier/receiver plus passive speakers. Check the available input before buying the turntable.

When the system has a PHONO input
A PHONO input is designed for a cartridge’s unamplified, equalization-dependent signal. Connect the turntable’s PHONO output to that input and set the turntable’s selector to PHONO. The stereo’s phono stage then performs the necessary amplification and equalization.
When the system has AUX, LINE, or another line input
AUX, LINE, CD, and similar inputs expect a stronger line-level signal. Use a turntable’s built-in phono preamp and set its output to LINE. The AT-LP60X manual specifically instructs users to select LINE for an AUX/line input. The Sony PS-LX310BT also includes a built-in phono preamp, allowing it to feed a line input.
Why the match matters
Sending LINE output into PHONO applies phono amplification twice, which can produce excessive level and incorrect equalization. Sending PHONO output into AUX leaves the signal too weak and without the required equalization. If a turntable lacks a built-in preamp and your stereo has no PHONO input, Sony says an in-line amplifier is required.
Audio-Technica AT-LP60X: the straightforward automatic option
The AT-LP60X family is aimed at listeners who want to press a button rather than balance an arm manually. Its automatic mechanism starts playback, returns the tonearm, and stops at the end of a record. It supports the two common LP and single speeds: 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.
Built-in phono equalizer and output selector
The defining setup feature is the built-in phono equalizer, often called a phono preamp. A selector lets you choose PHONO or LINE. Use PHONO only with a PHONO input; use LINE with powered speakers or any AUX/LINE input. This avoids buying a separate preamp for a basic system.

Wired versus Bluetooth versions
The standard AT-LP60X is the uncomplicated wired choice. The AT-LP60XBT adds Bluetooth for compatible wireless speakers, headphones, or another receiving device. Its product information also lists a replaceable stylus, an integrated cartridge, an included cable, and a 45 rpm adapter. Regional product pages and bundles can differ, so verify the exact model suffix and what is in the box where you live.
Who should choose it
- Choose a wired AT-LP60X when your speakers or amplifier are close enough for an RCA connection and you want the fewest wireless pairing variables.
- Choose the Bluetooth variant when the playback device is across the room or you specifically need wireless listening.
- Choose another class of turntable only if you require a feature this family does not provide, such as 78 rpm playback or a different connection workflow.
Sony PS-LX310BT: more connection choices
The PS-LX310BT combines automatic operation with Bluetooth, USB, and RCA output. Its automatic start, return, and stop functions are useful when you do not want to handle the tonearm for every side. It also has a built-in phono preamp, so it can feed a line input without a separate phono box.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBluetooth and USB in one model
Bluetooth lets the turntable send audio to a compatible wireless receiver. USB provides a wired computer connection for workflows that support recording or archiving. RCA remains available for a conventional connection to an amplifier or powered speakers. Select the path you will actually use; extra sockets do not remove the need to configure the receiving equipment correctly.
Speed limitation
Sony’s specifications list 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Its support FAQ, last modified February 4, 2026, explicitly says the PS-LX310BT cannot play 78 rpm records. If your collection includes shellac 78s, this is a decisive exclusion rather than a minor specification.
Gain and pairing considerations
Sony documents gain selection and Bluetooth setup and troubleshooting. Keep the turntable within the practical range of the receiving device, select the correct Bluetooth input, and follow Sony’s pairing sequence rather than assuming every speaker enters pairing mode the same way. For a system that will always sit beside an amplifier, RCA may be simpler than maintaining a wireless link.

What you need for a complete beginner setup
Option 1: turntable plus powered speakers
Powered speakers contain their own amplifier. Connect a turntable’s LINE output to the speakers’ analog input, set the speaker input to that connection, and control listening volume on the speakers. This is generally the shortest path from an unopened box to playback.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Option 2: turntable plus amplifier/receiver and passive speakers
An amplifier or receiver powers passive speakers. If it has a PHONO input, a turntable can use PHONO output. If it has only AUX/LINE inputs, use the turntable’s built-in preamp and LINE output. Connect the passive speakers to the amplifier’s speaker terminals and observe the amplifier’s left/right channel markings.
Option 3: Bluetooth playback
A Bluetooth-capable turntable can send audio to a compatible powered speaker, sound system, or headphones. The receiving device still needs its own amplification. Bluetooth does not make a passive speaker operate by itself, and it does not eliminate the need to select the correct output mode when a wired connection is used.
Step-by-step setup
- Identify the playback input. Look at the rear panel or manual of the speakers, amplifier, or receiver. Write down whether you will use PHONO, AUX/LINE, RCA line input, USB, or Bluetooth.
- Confirm amplification. If the speakers are passive, add an amplifier or receiver. Powered speakers already include amplification. Sony’s connection guidance states that when no PHONO input is available, the turntable needs a built-in or in-line amplifier before it connects to another stereo input.
- Choose the matching turntable output. Set an AT-LP60X selector to PHONO for a PHONO input, or LINE for AUX/LINE. For a Sony line-input connection, use its built-in phono preamp and the line-level path described in the model instructions.
- Make the physical connection. For a wired setup, connect the turntable’s RCA cable to the corresponding left and right inputs. For Bluetooth, put the receiver into pairing mode and follow the turntable’s pairing procedure. For USB, connect the supplied or specified USB cable to the computer and select the turntable as the recording input if your software requires it.
- Complete the model-specific preparation. Follow the exact manual for removing transport materials, fitting the platter and belt, and balancing or securing any components. The AT-LP60X manual instructs owners to rotate the platter by hand ten times during preparation; this resets the automatic mechanism and helps the belt ride correctly.
- Select the record speed. Use 33 1/3 for a standard LP and 45 for a 45 rpm single or EP. Do not select either speed for a 78 rpm disc; the Sony model does not support 78 rpm, and the cited AT-LP60X specifications cover 33 1/3 and 45 rpm.
- Start at a low volume. Turn on the speakers or amplifier, select the input, start the record, and raise the volume gradually. This makes it easier to catch a wrong input or output-mode setting before it becomes loud.
PHONO versus LINE: a practical explanation
The cartridge produces a small signal whose bass and treble are intentionally altered during record cutting. A phono stage both boosts that signal and applies the inverse equalization. A PHONO output leaves that work to the receiving stereo; a LINE output means the turntable has already done it internally.
| Turntable setting | Connect to | Use it when | Do not use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHONO | PHONO input | Your amplifier or receiver has a dedicated phono stage | AUX, LINE, CD, or powered-speaker line input without another phono preamp |
| LINE | AUX, LINE, CD, or powered-speaker analog input | The turntable’s built-in preamp is enabled | A PHONO input, unless the receiving unit lets you bypass its phono stage |
If the sound is extremely quiet and thin, check whether a PHONO-output turntable was connected to AUX without a preamp. If it is loud, boomy, or distorted, check whether LINE output was connected to PHONO.

Can these beginner turntables play 78 rpm records?
No. The documented operating speeds for the AT-LP60X family and Sony PS-LX310BT are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Sony’s support FAQ expressly rules out 78 rpm for the PS-LX310BT. A 78 rpm collection therefore needs a turntable specifically designed for that speed, not a setting adjustment on one of these models.

Automatic start, return, and stop
Automation reduces handling of the tonearm. It is useful for a first system, shared living spaces, or anyone who wants repeatable operation. The Sony lists all three actions; the AT-LP60X family is also fully automatic.
Built-in phono preamp
This removes a separate component when the stereo lacks PHONO. It does not remove the need to choose PHONO or LINE correctly, and it does not replace an amplifier for passive speakers.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth helps when the playback device is wireless or physically distant. It introduces pairing and compatibility steps, so it is convenience rather than an automatic improvement for every room.

Replaceable stylus
The AT-LP60XBT product information identifies a replaceable stylus. Treat the stylus as a model-specific consumable: verify the exact turntable variant and compatibility before ordering a replacement.
Troubleshooting a first setup
No sound
- Confirm the amplifier or powered speakers are on and set to the input receiving the turntable.
- Check left and right RCA plugs and make sure the cable is connected to an output on the turntable and an input on the playback equipment.
- For Bluetooth, verify that the receiver is paired to the turntable rather than another nearby device.
- Check that a PHONO-output connection has a phono stage somewhere in the signal path.
Very quiet, thin sound
This usually indicates PHONO output feeding AUX/LINE without a phono preamp. Switch the turntable to LINE if it has a built-in preamp, or add an appropriate in-line phono preamp.
Loud or distorted sound
Check for LINE output connected to a PHONO input. Move the cable to AUX/LINE or select PHONO output only when the receiving input is genuinely PHONO.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The record starts at the wrong speed
Check the 33/45 selector and identify the speed printed on the record label. Neither documented beginner model supports 78 rpm, so a 78 cannot be corrected by changing between their two speed settings.
The AT-LP60X automation behaves incorrectly after unpacking
Power the unit down and repeat the preparation in its manual, including rotating the platter ten times by hand. This procedure resets the automatic mechanism and helps seat the belt correctly. Do not improvise a different belt path when the manual provides a specific sequence.
Bluetooth will not connect
Place the receiving speaker or headphones in pairing mode, remove an unintended existing connection if necessary, and repeat the model’s pairing sequence. Sony’s support material includes dedicated setup and troubleshooting steps; use those instructions for the PS-LX310BT rather than applying a generic Bluetooth sequence.
Buying checklist
- Input: Is your playback equipment PHONO, AUX/LINE, USB, Bluetooth, or a combination?
- Output mode: Does the chosen turntable provide the PHONO/LINE option your system requires?
- Amplification: Are your speakers powered, or do you need an amplifier/receiver for passive speakers?
- Automation: Do you want automatic start, return, and stop?
- Wireless needs: Will Bluetooth genuinely simplify the room, or would a cable be more reliable?
- Computer needs: Do you need USB, or is it an unused extra?
- Record speeds: Are your records 33 1/3 or 45 rpm? If you own 78s, neither documented beginner option is suitable.
- Service: Can you obtain a compatible replacement stylus for the exact regional model?
- Box contents: Confirm the included RCA/USB cable, 45 rpm adapter, and other accessories for the precise regional listing.
Bottom line for a simple system
Choose the AT-LP60X family when you want automatic, two-speed playback with a clear wired PHONO/LINE choice; select the AT-LP60XBT variant only when Bluetooth is part of your plan. Choose the Sony PS-LX310BT when Bluetooth and USB are useful alongside RCA, while remembering its firm 33 1/3-and-45-rpm limit. In every case, decide the receiving input first, match PHONO to PHONO or LINE to AUX/LINE, and provide amplification for the speakers.
