For a first small game, start with a deliberately limited 2D project. Choose Godot if you are ready to learn scripting, GDevelop if you want visual, condition-and-action logic with little or no code, or GameMaker if you want a 2D-focused workflow with a free way to begin. None is a universal winner: the right choice depends on your coding comfort, intended platform, and how much of the engine you want to learn before finishing a game.
What makes an engine beginner-friendly?
A beginner-friendly engine is not merely one that advertises an “easy” interface. For a first project, look for four practical things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A complete learning path: You should be able to follow a guided lesson from an empty project to a playable result.
- A suitable logic model: Visual events can remove an initial coding barrier, while a scripting language teaches skills that transfer to larger projects.
- A realistic first scope: Strong beginner guidance should encourage a small 2D game before the complexity of 3D.
- A publishing route that matches your goal: Desktop, browser, mobile and console exports can involve different tools, tiers and requirements.
The official material for Godot, GDevelop and GameMaker supports these three as sensible starting points. It does not establish a controlled test of which engine is fastest to learn, nor a universal ease ranking. “Best” therefore means the best fit for your first project rather than the highest score in an objective league table.
Quick comparison
| Engine | Best fit | How you build logic | Documented export scope | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Godot | A first coded 2D game, with room to explore 3D later | GDScript or C# examples in the official introduction; the complete first-2D-game tutorial is scripted | Desktop, mobile, web and consoles are described in the official documentation | The first-game tutorial assumes some programming experience. The “latest” documentation can describe unreleased features, so use stable documentation for the version you install. |
| GDevelop | A first game when you want visual logic and minimal coding | Events built from conditions and actions; JavaScript is optional | Web, desktop, Android and iOS routes are described in the official material | Plans and export features can change. Some publication capabilities are tier-dependent, and the iOS route references development tools. |
| GameMaker | A 2D-focused first game | Free tutorials and a free starting tier are promoted by the official site | Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch are listed | Professional or commercial terms and platform availability should be confirmed for your target before release. |
Choose by your coding comfort
If you want to avoid code at first: GDevelop
GDevelop presents game logic as events. You select conditions—such as a collision, a timer reaching zero or a key being pressed—and attach actions, such as moving an object, changing a scene or updating a score. This lets you make a small playable prototype without first learning syntax. Its beginner material introduces basic game-making concepts and guided tutorials, and JavaScript is available when visual events no longer cover what you want.

This is a good fit for a learner whose immediate goal is to understand game structure: scenes, objects, input, collisions, variables and win conditions. You can add code later instead of making programming a prerequisite on day one.
If you want to learn programming through the project: Godot
Godot’s official introduction includes GDScript and C# examples, and its complete first-2D-game tutorial walks through a scripted project. That route is valuable if you want to understand how game state, functions, signals and reusable scenes work. It is less suitable if “no code” is a firm requirement: the tutorial explicitly assumes some programming experience.
Godot’s documentation says newcomers should start with 2D games. That recommendation is practical: a small 2D project lets you learn input, movement, collisions, scenes and UI without simultaneously solving camera perspective, lighting, 3D asset pipelines and more complex physics.

If you want a 2D-first tool with a free starting path: GameMaker
GameMaker is positioned around 2D development and promotes free tutorials plus a free tier for making a first game. The supplied material does not verify a particular tutorial sequence in the way Godot’s complete first-game lesson is documented, so inspect the current learning resources before committing to a long course.
Why your first game should be small and 2D
A first game should have one central interaction and a finishable amount of content. Examples include moving a character through one short level, catching objects for a score, dodging hazards for 60 seconds or solving a handful of rooms. These projects still teach the complete loop: title screen, input, gameplay, feedback, win or lose state, restart and export.
Starting in 2D reduces the number of systems you must learn at once. You can use simple placeholder shapes while proving that the game is fun. Art, sound and additional levels can be added after the core loop works.

A practical first-project scope
- One player-controlled object or character.
- One main input scheme, such as keyboard movement or pointer aiming.
- One primary objective and one failure condition.
- One scene or a small number of short scenes.
- A score, timer or health value that visibly changes.
- A restart button and a way to reach an ending.
Do not begin by promising an open world, online multiplayer, procedural generation, a large inventory or several playable characters. Those features multiply the amount of state, content and testing required before you have a playable foundation.
Godot: the best fit for a first scripted 2D game
What the official learning path gives you
Godot’s official first-2D-game material is a complete, step-by-step tutorial rather than a list of disconnected features. It is designed to take you through a small game, making it easier to see how individual lessons fit together. The documentation also states that Godot is completely free and open source under the permissive MIT license.
Use the stable documentation corresponding to your installed release for current feature details. Godot’s “latest” tutorial pages can be marked unstable and may describe features that are not available in a released stable version.
What you will learn
- How a project is organized into scenes and reusable nodes.
- How a script responds to input and updates objects over time.
- How collisions and signals connect gameplay events.
- How to display a score or other interface elements.
- How to assemble a complete playable loop instead of a static demonstration.
Where the learning curve appears
You will encounter programming concepts early. If terms such as variables, functions, conditionals and object properties are new, work through Godot’s getting-started material before the complete game tutorial. Expect to pause and test small changes rather than copying every step without understanding it.
When to choose Godot
- Choose it when learning a scripting language is part of your goal.
- Choose it when you want a documented path from a small 2D project toward more advanced work.
- Choose it when you value an open-source, free starting point.
- Choose it when your eventual target may include desktop, mobile, web or console export, subject to the requirements of that destination.
GDevelop: the easiest no-code on-ramp
How event-based logic works
In GDevelop, an event combines conditions and actions. A condition checks what is true; an action changes the game. For example, a “player overlaps coin” condition can trigger an action that removes the coin and increases a score. A “timer is greater than 60 seconds” condition can trigger a game-over scene. You build the rule visually and can inspect it without reading a traditional script.

What to learn before building
GDevelop’s beginner guidance points new users toward basic game-making concepts and guided tutorials. Learn the difference between a scene, an object, a behavior, a variable and an event before adding large amounts of content. Naming objects clearly and grouping related events will make a project easier to debug as it grows.
Export considerations
Official material describes routes for web, desktop, Android and iOS. Treat those as documented destinations, not a promise that every export is equally simple or included in every plan. The iOS route references development tools, and publication features can depend on the current tier. Check the current plan and platform requirements when you know where you will publish.
When to choose GDevelop
- Choose it when you want to make a playable result before learning syntax.
- Choose it when visual conditions and actions match the kind of game you are planning.
- Choose it when optional JavaScript gives you a gradual route into coding.
- Choose it when browser or mobile distribution is important, after checking the current export terms.
GameMaker: a 2D-focused alternative
Why it belongs on the shortlist
GameMaker’s official product information emphasizes 2D development, free tutorials and a free tier for getting started. That combination makes it worth considering for a first platformer, top-down game, puzzle or arcade project.
The available material does not establish a specific, verified tutorial progression, so judge the learning path by opening the current tutorials and checking whether they match your preferred teaching style. A free tier is a way to begin, not a blanket statement that every platform or commercial use is free.
Documented platform list
The product information lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, HTML5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Platform access, export tools and professional or commercial terms can vary. Confirm the current requirements for the platform you intend to ship on before designing your workflow around it.
When to choose GameMaker
- Choose it when your first project is firmly 2D and you want a tool centered on that workflow.
- Choose it when the available tutorials suit the way you learn.
- Choose it when one of its listed desktop, web, mobile or console destinations is your priority.
- Choose it when the current free and professional terms fit your intended use.
Step-by-step: turn the choice into a first playable game
1. Write a one-sentence game brief
Use a sentence such as “Move a character, collect five objects and reach the exit before time runs out.” If the sentence needs several clauses, remove features until the core interaction is clear.

2. Select the engine using one decisive question
- Select GDevelop if you want conditions and actions with no required scripting at the start.
- Select Godot if you want the project itself to teach programming and you can follow a scripted tutorial.
- Select GameMaker if you want a 2D-centered tool and its current tutorials and terms fit your target.
3. Follow one official beginner path
Do not mix three engines while learning the basics. Complete one guided lesson or tutorial, then rebuild its smallest mechanic in a blank project. Rebuilding exposes which steps you understand and which you only followed mechanically.
4. Prototype with placeholders
Use simple shapes, temporary colors and basic sounds. First verify movement, collisions, scoring, failure and restart. Asset stores and marketplaces can provide optional art or sound later, but they are not prerequisites for choosing an engine or proving that the game works.
5. Add one feature at a time
After the core loop works, add only one change before testing: a second enemy type, a timer, a new level or a menu. If something breaks, you will know which change caused it.
6. Test the complete loop
- Can a new player understand the objective without your explanation?
- Does the game respond to every intended input?
- Can the player win, lose and restart?
- Does the score, timer or health value update correctly?
- Does the exported build behave like the editor version?
7. Export only after the desktop or browser prototype is stable
Export support is not identical across engines, destinations or tiers. Start with the simplest target you can test, then read the current platform-specific instructions for mobile or console publication. Keep a copy of the project before changing export settings.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Starting with 3D because it appears more ambitious
Fix: Make the first complete game 2D. You can learn the engine’s workflow and finish something before adding a 3D project.
Best Value
Choosing by a broad “easy” label
Fix: Open the actual beginner path. A no-code event system and a scripted tutorial solve different problems; choose the one that matches your immediate learning goal.
Adding art before proving the mechanic
Fix: Use placeholders until movement, collisions, feedback and restart work. Visual polish cannot repair an unclear or unfinished game loop.
Assuming every export is included in the free tier
Fix: Check the current pricing, commercial-use terms and destination-specific requirements. Free access to an editor does not necessarily mean every publishing route is free or available.

A decision checklist
- Pick GDevelop when visual events are the most important requirement and JavaScript can remain optional.
- Pick Godot when you are willing to learn scripting and want a complete official first-2D-game path.
- Pick GameMaker when you want a 2D-focused workflow, free starting access and a listed destination that matches your plans.
- Pick any of them cautiously when your target is mobile or console: verify current export tools, account requirements, platform approvals and tier limits first.
Final recommendation
For most first-time developers, the safest plan is to make one tiny 2D game and choose the engine according to how you want to learn. GDevelop offers the gentlest no-code entry. Godot offers the clearest documented route for learning scripted game development and has a free, open-source foundation. GameMaker is a credible 2D alternative when its current tutorials, free tier and publishing terms fit your destination. Finish a small game before judging the engine; completion will teach you more than switching tools after an hour.
