If you want a first RPG with a gentle learning curve, start with Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue if collecting creatures and building a team sounds fun. Choose Chrono Trigger instead if you want a more compact, story-led adventure. Neither is effortless, and there is no controlled comparison proving one is objectively easier; these recommendations focus on how clearly each game introduces its systems and where its rough spots appear.

At a glance: which game suits you?

Game Best for Why it can suit a newcomer Friction to expect
Pokémon Red / Pokémon Blue Players who enjoy collecting creatures, assembling a team, and following a clear regional journey The game teaches catching early, then gives the adventure recognizable milestones: exploring Kanto, challenging Gyms, and reaching the Elite Four. RPGFan describes the dungeons as growing more complex gradually. Type matchups and team choices matter; Hidden Moves can gate navigation; completing the collection requires trading; and some late-game challenges are tougher.
Chrono Trigger Players who want a shorter, story-focused quest A 2021 newcomer-oriented essay describes its combat as straightforward and intuitive, and notes that enemies are visible in the field, giving players more control over starting fights. It still requires combat and party decisions. Its reported 15–20-hour first playthrough is one writer’s estimate, not a guarantee.

This is a practical fit guide, not a measured difficulty ranking. The games offer different entry points: Pokémon makes collecting and team building central, while Chrono Trigger is the more compact story-led option.

Why Pokémon Red and Blue work as a first RPG

Nintendo’s official legacy page describes Professor Oak teaching the player to catch Pokémon before the journey through Kanto begins. From there, progress is easy to understand: explore, catch and strengthen Pokémon, challenge Gym leaders, and work toward the Elite Four. That visible loop makes the games a natural first choice if you like having a concrete next goal.

RPGFan’s feature calls Red and Blue “master classes in how to introduce the RPG genre to first-time players,” pointing to simple dungeons that grow more complex as the adventure advances. That gradual ramp is the strongest case for their beginner-friendliness: the games introduce the basic ideas before asking players to handle more involved routes and areas.

What the games still ask you to learn

Approachable does not mean decision-free. Your team can hold six Pokémon, and types have strengths and weaknesses; selecting a team with complementary abilities helps. Nintendo Life’s 2009 review describes both the type system and the team-building layer, while characterizing the original games as especially accessible.

Exploration also has a distinct source of friction: Hidden Moves such as Cut, Surf, Strength, and Flash can act as keys to routes or obstacles. If you have not prepared a Pokémon that can use the needed move, progress may stall until you adjust your team. RPGFan also identifies Cerulean Cave and its Mewtwo encounter as a more demanding late-game challenge, so a smooth start does not guarantee that every section feels equally forgiving.

How long is Pokémon Red or Blue?

Stuart Reddick’s Nintendo Life review estimated a 30–40-hour adventure in 2009. Treat that as one reviewer’s estimate, not an official completion-time statistic; individual playtime will vary with exploration, battles, and how much of the collection you pursue.

Why Chrono Trigger is the better pick for a compact adventure

Chrono Trigger suits players who want an RPG that gets to the story and keeps the journey comparatively focused. In an April 9, 2021 essay about RPGs for newcomers, Derek L.H. describes its combat as generally straightforward and intuitive. The game uses familiar experience-based progression, while party members learn Tech abilities and can combine some of them. Enemies are visible on the field, so encounters are less likely to interrupt unexpectedly than in games built around unseen random battles.

  • 🎮5.1-inch color screen game console🎮. It has a very rich range of functions, not only for playing games, but also for watching videos, listening to music, and reading e-books. Very suitable for outdoor/indoor/travel leisure and entertainment, and also very suitable as a gift.
  • 🎮Supports multiple emulators🎮. Equipped with various retro emulators such as MAME/arcade/MD, players have more choices. Each emulator has many games, and one game console is equivalent to ten game consoles from the past. It is now very cost-effective to purchase.

  • 🎮The game can be saved🎮. When the battery is low or the user cannot continue playing the game, pressing the "ESC" button can save the game progress, and the player can continue playing according to the previous progress without starting over.
  • 🎮Support video and audio playback🎮. When users don't want to play games, they can also watch videos, listen to music, and read e-books. It is a great multifunctional portable electronic entertainment device (pocket game console).

Derek L.H. estimated a first playthrough at 15–20 hours. That is an editorial estimate from 2021, not a measured or promised finish time. The game still has battles and formidable stakes; its appeal here is a relatively direct combat introduction and a compact campaign, not an absence of challenge.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Pokémon Red or Blue if collecting, experimenting with a party, and working through clear Gym milestones sound satisfying. Expect to pay attention to type matchups and to plan around moves that open routes.
  • Choose Chrono Trigger if you would rather follow a story through a shorter reported campaign and prefer to see enemies before engaging them. Allow for party abilities and combat decisions even though its basic flow is described as intuitive.

If this is your very first RPG and you enjoy creature collecting, Pokémon is the more natural starting point. If your main concern is committing to a long game, Chrono Trigger is the better fit based on the available playtime estimate. Those are recommendations based on structure and reader preference, not a head-to-head difficulty test.

Where to play the original games today

Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are original Game Boy releases, not the later FireRed and LeafGreen remakes. Nintendo’s UK legacy page notes that purchases from the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended in 2023. In 2026, Nintendo announced digital-only Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen; its support FAQ says it has nothing to announce about adding the original Red and Blue to Nintendo Classics. Check your regional storefront for current legal availability rather than assuming the original Game Boy versions are sold on a modern platform.

For a physical copy, a search such as “Pokémon Red Version Game Boy” identifies the specific vintage release, but no current listing, price, or stock is established here. Before buying a cartridge, check its authenticity, region, condition, return policy, and whether you have compatible hardware. Chrono Trigger has appeared on several platforms, including PC via Steam, according to the 2021 essay, but that source’s platform list is not a current storefront check; verify availability in your region before purchasing.

Why these are the two recommendations

Other 1990s RPGs exist, but the available evidence does not establish another title as a better fit for players frustrated by hard games. These two provide distinct, well-supported approaches: an incremental collecting-and-team-building loop in Pokémon, and a comparatively compact, story-led adventure in Chrono Trigger. Older interfaces and difficulty can vary widely across the decade, so “1990s RPG” should not be treated as a promise of an easy learning curve.
