Treat these as accessible starting points, not a definitive ranking or a promise of top performance on the current patch: Riot advises new players to choose a champion whose style appeals to them rather than selecting one solely for its balance strength.
How to choose a beginner champion
A useful starter champion makes it easier to notice what your role asks you to do. Consider how much mechanical execution the kit demands, whether its purpose is clear, how forgiving it feels when you make a mistake, and whether it helps you learn the role. These are practical selection criteria, not an official Riot scoring system or a measured difficulty rating.

League of Legends has five standard positions: top, jungle, mid, bot carry (often called ADC), and support. Riot recommends getting familiar with at least one champion for each position if you want to be prepared for different roles. The positions offer useful guidance, not rigid rules: Riot describes top as a lane for tough solo fighters and mid as a home for high-burst champions. Riot’s position overview explains the roles.
Beginner champion picks by role
| Role | Starter pick | Alternative | What to learn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top | Garen | Malphite | Farming, trading, and knowing when to disengage |
| Jungle | Warwick | Amumu | Moving between lanes and handling jungle objectives |
| Mid | Annie | Lux | Managing a solo lane and using burst damage thoughtfully |
| Bot carry / ADC | Ashe | Miss Fortune | Dealing ranged damage while positioning safely |
| Support | Leona | Soraka | Helping the lane and contributing to the team in a distinct role |
This shortlist and its alternatives are supported by a 2026 role-by-role beginner guide from Dodge.gg. The recommendations are editorial picks, not official Riot beginner rankings. A separate guide from Games.gg describes evaluating beginner options by factors such as difficulty, forgiveness, clarity, and how well a champion teaches its role.

Top: Garen
Garen is a direct place to start if you want to learn top lane. Pay attention to farming and trades, and practise recognising when continuing a fight is less useful than disengaging. Malphite is another option if you would rather try a different top-lane style.
Jungle: Warwick
Warwick is the suggested entry point for jungle in the 2026 guide. The role involves moving between lanes and dealing with neutral jungle monsters and objectives, so use your games to understand those responsibilities rather than treating jungle as another solo lane. Riot’s role overview provides official context for the jungle. Amumu is an alternative to consider.

Mid: Annie
Annie is a straightforward starter option for mid. Riot characterises mid laners as high-burst champions, making this a useful position for learning how to look for opportunities to deal concentrated damage. Lux is another suggested option.
Bot carry / ADC: Ashe
Ashe is the recommended beginner bot carry in the guide. Her role still asks you to deal ranged damage while positioning carefully; an approachable champion does not remove that responsibility. Miss Fortune is an alternative.
Rank #3

Support: Leona
Leona is presented as a simple example of an engage-and-stun support. Support has its own lane and team responsibilities, so focus on learning when your abilities help your teammates rather than assuming the role is simply a less demanding version of bot carry. Soraka is an alternative pick.
Use the list as a starting point, not a strength ranking
The best pick for you may be the one whose play style you enjoy enough to keep practising. Riot Games Player Support offers Ashe, Ryze, and Garen as possible choices for understanding the basics, but that advice is not a current champion recommendation for every role. Riot also cautions that “there’s no point in buying a Champion just because of its abilities or current balance situation.” Read the full Choosing the Right Champion guidance for its advice on making a personal choice.

Beginner-friendly does not mean strongest on the live patch. The sources supporting this role-by-role list do not provide verified current win rates, pick rates, or a reproducible difficulty measurement for these champions. Balance and role viability can change, so use the list to choose what to learn rather than as a claim about competitive strength.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuild a small pool and learn each position
If you want role flexibility, start by choosing one champion for each position from the table. Riot’s matchmaking and autofill guidance recommends familiarity with at least one champion in every position. You do not need to master all five at once: begin with the role you find most interesting, then add the others as you broaden your experience.
