Start with coverage, not the product name
Many items sold as “blankets” are throws made for a couch. Compare the listed dimensions with the mattress before anything else.

- Pottery Barn Teen lists its Weighted Throw at 50 × 60 inches. That is a lap-and-shoulders size, not full-bed coverage.
- Mosaic’s teen and young-adult weighted collection lists a throw at 38 × 60 inches and a twin at 42 × 72 inches. Its twin is sized for the sleeper’s body rather than hanging over the sides of the bed.
- YNM’s weighted blanket listing gives twin (48 × 72), full/queen (60 × 80) and king (80 × 87).
A standard twin mattress is about 38 × 75 inches, and a twin XL is about 38 × 80 inches. Check the mattress, then decide whether the blanket should hang over the sides or just sit on top of the sleeper. If a teen uses a layered setup (sheet, blanket, comforter), a slightly oversized blanket tucks in better.
Match the fabric to how the teen sleeps

Weighted blankets: optional, and not a sleep fix
A weighted blanket is a different product, not an upgraded regular blanket. Retailers and makers promote them and publish sizing advice, but none of the pages reviewed offers independent, teen-specific evidence that they improve sleep or mood, and no universal safety rule was established. Treat one as a comfort preference. If a teen has a medical, sleep or sensory concern, or is on the small side, ask a pediatrician before buying one.

A teen who is heavier than those ranges may find a given blanket too light for the advice it comes with.

- Pick a size that matches use: a throw for the couch or lap, a twin or larger for bed.

- Read the care label, since weighted fills often limit washing and drying options.

Taste varies a lot between teens, so no color or texture is safe for everyone. Let the teen choose the look, and check that the blanket works over the existing comforter and sheets. Blanket or comforter?
A blanket is a layer. A comforter is a filled top cover. Pottery Barn Teen’s Favorite Hoodie Comforter is an example of the latter: a 65% polyester/35% cotton jersey shell, 100% polyester fill, machine washable, and sized for standard twin and twin XL mattresses.
