Start at Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations, apply the suitable suggestions, and use a separate battery profile from your plugged-in profile.
There is no universal runtime or savings percentage: the result depends on the laptop’s processor, panel, battery health, wireless hardware and workload. The settings below prioritize meaningful gains without disabling the connectivity and security features a business computer needs.

Start with Energy recommendations
Windows 11 collects its highest-impact power controls in one place. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Microsoft’s page can apply recommendations one at a time or together, including power mode, display brightness, screen-off timing, sleep timing and USB power behavior.
- Open Energy recommendations and review every suggestion rather than selecting them blindly.
- Apply the power-mode recommendation if you want Windows to favor efficiency on battery.
- Choose a comfortable brightness level; do not force a setting that makes reading difficult.
- Set shorter screen-off and sleep values for battery use.
- Apply USB recommendations when they will not interrupt a keyboard, mouse, security key or other essential accessory.
Some recommendations appear only on hardware that supports them. If a control is absent, Windows is normally indicating that the device or driver cannot use that particular feature.

Choose the right power mode
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Windows provides three modes:
| Mode | Best use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Travel, writing, web work and ordinary office tasks on battery | Windows reduces power use and may limit background activity or peak responsiveness. |
| Balanced | Plugged-in meetings, development builds and large spreadsheets | A compromise between responsiveness and consumption. |
| Best performance | Sustained CPU-heavy work when connected to power | Higher responsiveness with higher energy use and heat. |
Set Best power efficiency for On battery power. Keep Balanced when plugged in unless your workload genuinely needs more performance. A power mode is not a battery-health setting; it changes how aggressively Windows and the processor trade speed for consumption.
Configure Energy saver as a low-battery safety net
In Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver, choose the battery percentage at which Energy saver turns on automatically. Enable Lower screen brightness when using energy saver when that option is available and acceptable for your work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMicrosoft describes Energy saver as automatically managing system processes and power usage to balance performance with longer battery life. Treat it as protection against an unexpectedly low charge, not as a substitute for sensible everyday settings: it activates only at the threshold you select and can reduce background work or brightness when you may be trying to finish a call or presentation.
Tune the display first
The screen is usually the most visible power control. Make each change under Settings > System > Display, and verify the result on battery rather than assuming every panel behaves the same way.
Brightness
Lower brightness to the dimmest level at which text and faces remain comfortable. Brightness changes are immediate and reversible, so use a brighter setting for a sunlit room and a lower setting indoors instead of leaving the panel at maximum all day.
Content-adaptive brightness
On supported laptops, look for content-adaptive brightness controls and choose On Battery Only if available. Windows can vary brightness with the content being shown, which may save power. The trade-off is visual movement: the screen can change brightness while you work. Turn it off for color-critical editing, design review or any workflow where a stable image matters more than incremental savings.

Refresh rate
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. If the panel offers a lower refresh rate or Dynamic refresh rate, use the dynamic option or the lower rate on battery. A high fixed refresh rate keeps the display updating more often even when the page is static. Dynamic refresh rate is hardware-dependent and may not appear on an ultralight business model.
HDR
Turn off HDR on battery unless your work requires it. Windows documents that it may disable HDR automatically when the laptop is unplugged to reduce power use. HDR can remain enabled for color-critical or HDR-specific work, but it is unnecessary for ordinary documents, email and most business calls.
External displays
An external monitor, dock or USB display can draw substantial power from the laptop. Disconnect displays and USB devices you do not need while traveling. A dock improves convenience but should not be treated as a battery-saving device; it may power monitors and peripherals at the same time.
Shorten screen-off and sleep timers
Use Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts to set separate On battery power and When plugged in values. Set both Turn my screen off after and Make my device sleep after to short battery values. Energy recommendations offer three- or 10-minute choices on supported devices.
- Choose the shorter option for travel, trains, airports and shared workspaces.
- Use a longer plugged-in timeout for presentations or when reading without touching the keyboard.
- Remember that a short timer means more frequent unlocking; use Windows Hello or another approved sign-in method if your organization permits it.
Do not use a screen saver as a battery strategy. Microsoft states that sleep consumes significantly less power than leaving a screen saver running.
Control background activity and graphics
Find the apps using energy
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Review the apps with the highest recent consumption and restrict background activity for eligible apps that do not need live updates. A messaging, security or collaboration app may legitimately need background access; an unused game launcher or store utility usually does not.
Assign noncritical graphics work to power saving
Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Select a noncritical application, choose Options, set it to Power saving, and save. Leave video-editing, 3D, engineering or other GPU-intensive applications on the performance setting when the work requires it. If an app is not listed, add its executable with Browse before choosing the graphics preference.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth consume power when active, especially while searching for networks or maintaining connections. Turn them off only when you do not need them. For genuinely offline work, use Airplane mode; otherwise leave the radio required for meetings, authentication or collaboration enabled.
- Keep Wi-Fi on for corporate access, video calls, cloud files and security services.
- Keep Bluetooth on for an approved keyboard, mouse, headset or accessibility device.
- Reduce unnecessary email and calendar synchronization when offline, but do not disable schedules needed for business operations.
- Disconnect from unused paired devices so Windows is not repeatedly trying to reconnect.
Microsoft specifically recommends disabling unused wireless communications and adjusting synchronization and background activity. The correct setting is the least connectivity that still lets your organization’s calls, authentication and collaboration work reliably.
Use sleep, hibernate and the lid deliberately
Short breaks: sleep
Sleep is appropriate when you will return soon. Microsoft describes it as using very little power while resuming quickly. It is more efficient than leaving applications running behind a screen saver.
Longer absences: hibernate or shut down
For a long lunch, overnight travel or storage in a bag, use hibernate or shut down. Hibernate writes the session to storage and powers down more fully, so resume is slower than sleep but standby consumption is lower.
Configure lid and power-button actions
Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. Set separate battery and plugged-in actions, such as sleep for a short meeting and hibernate for travel. In the same area, choose Choose what the power buttons do. Company policy may lock these controls; if so, use the approved policy rather than forcing a local change.
Dark mode: useful on OLED, secondary on LCD
Enable a dark Windows theme under Settings > Personalization > Colors if it is comfortable. Dark backgrounds can reduce energy use on OLED panels because dark pixels emit less light. On conventional LCD panels, the backlight remains on, so brightness, refresh rate and idle timeouts generally have a larger effect. Dark mode is therefore a worthwhile preference, not a replacement for display tuning.

Maintain separate battery and plugged-in profiles
Windows lets you make battery-specific choices without sacrificing responsiveness at a desk. Use this baseline and adjust it for your work:
| Control | On battery | Plugged in |
|---|---|---|
| Power mode | Best power efficiency | Balanced; use Best performance only for sustained demanding work |
| Energy saver | Automatic at your chosen low-battery percentage | Normally off unless you deliberately want it |
| Brightness | Lowest comfortable level; adaptive brightness if acceptable | Set for room lighting and visual work |
| Refresh rate | Dynamic or lower supported rate | Higher rate when smooth motion is important |
| Screen and sleep timers | Short values, such as three or 10 minutes where offered | Longer values for presentations and desk work |
| Background apps | Restrict nonessential activity | Allow required updates and indexing |
| Wireless | Only radios and synchronization needed for the task | Leave business connectivity enabled |
This separation avoids a common failure mode: running Best performance, maximum brightness and long idle timers on battery, then disabling important business services in an attempt to compensate.

Travel and offline writing
Choose Best power efficiency, lower brightness, Dynamic or low refresh, short screen-off and sleep timers, and Airplane mode if the documents are local and no authentication is required. Set Energy saver to activate before the battery becomes critically low. Hibernate during a long break instead of leaving the laptop in sleep inside a bag.
Video meetings
Keep Wi-Fi, the microphone, camera and required collaboration software active. Use Best power efficiency, moderate brightness and a reasonable refresh rate rather than Airplane mode or aggressive background blocking. Plug in when possible; a meeting can require sustained processor, camera and wireless activity.
Development or large spreadsheets
Use Best power efficiency for light edits, but switch to Balanced when a build, calculation or data refresh is running and responsiveness matters. Return to the battery profile afterward. Graphics preferences should remain Power saving only for applications that do not need GPU performance.
Presentation at a desk
When plugged in, use Balanced and a longer screen timeout so the display does not sleep while you speak. If you must present on battery, disable adaptive brightness if brightness changes would distract the audience, and keep the required display output connected.

Troubleshoot unexpected drain
The battery drops quickly while idle
- Check Battery usage for an app with unusual background consumption.
- Confirm the laptop is actually sleeping when the lid is closed and that a dock or USB accessory is not keeping it awake.
- Shorten screen-off and sleep timers and hibernate for long absences.
- Turn off unused Bluetooth devices and Wi-Fi scanning when offline.
The laptop feels slow after changing settings
Best power efficiency can reduce peak responsiveness and background activity. Switch temporarily to Balanced for a build, spreadsheet calculation or other sustained task, then return to Best power efficiency. Do not solve a performance problem by turning off security or authentication software.
Best Value
Notifications or synchronization stopped
Revisit Battery usage restrictions and wireless settings. Restore background permission or synchronization for the affected business app, and keep the required network connection enabled. Battery savings are not useful if a call invitation, security prompt or collaboration update arrives late.
A recommended option is missing
Adaptive brightness, Dynamic refresh rate, HDR controls and some USB actions depend on the panel, firmware, drivers and Windows edition. Install approved driver and firmware updates, then check again. If the control still does not appear, use the settings that are available rather than relying on unsupported workarounds.
Hardware limits and charging decisions
Operating-system settings cannot overcome a worn battery or an undersized charger. Before buying a USB-C power bank or charger, verify that the laptop supports USB-C Power Delivery, the required wattage, the connector and the manufacturer’s limits. A USB-C port may support data or display output without accepting the power profile a particular laptop needs.
For a replacement battery, confirm the exact laptop model, battery part number and approved service method. Battery capacity, connector shape and firmware reporting are model-specific. Do not assume that a battery marketed for a similar-looking ultralight is compatible.
A dock can add charging, monitors and peripherals, but those connected devices can increase the laptop’s power draw. Evaluate a dock for connectivity and desk convenience, not as a battery-saving accessory.
Windows version and support note
These paths and Energy saver controls describe current Windows 11 interfaces; labels can vary slightly by edition, hardware and organizational policy. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support information updated in 2026. If a business laptop still runs Windows 10, plan its supported migration path with your organization rather than assuming every Windows 11 control will be present.
A five-minute battery check before leaving your desk
- Open Energy recommendations and apply suitable power, display, timeout and USB suggestions.
- Confirm Best power efficiency is selected for battery use.
- Set Energy saver’s automatic threshold and enable brightness reduction if acceptable.
- Lower brightness, choose Dynamic or a lower refresh rate, and turn off HDR when it is not needed.
- Review Battery usage, restrict nonessential background apps, and set noncritical graphics applications to Power saving.
- Turn off only unused radios and synchronization; leave business connectivity required for calls and authentication enabled.
- Use sleep for short breaks and hibernate or shut down for long absences.
Microsoft’s battery guidance does not establish a universal percentage, watt-hour saving or runtime figure for these changes. The dependable approach is to measure your own workday after applying the profile, then relax one setting at a time if a business task, notification or visual requirement is affected.
