NBA 2K26: choose this for a current NBA simulation
NBA 2K26 is the direct successor for players who want the familiar licensed-NBA simulation route. 2K lists its release date as September 5, 2025, and schedules online services through December 31, 2027. Its listed offline modes include Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA, and The W. 2K’s server-status page is the place to check the service schedule.

Check the console generation before choosing an edition
Feature availability differs by generation. 2K says ProPLAY, The City, The W, and MyNBA are available only in the Gen 9 version. If one of those modes matters to you, confirm that the specific edition and platform you are purchasing are Gen 9 rather than assuming every version includes it. 2K’s NBA 2K26 page also notes that online and bonus features may require an internet connection, account registration, or paid console subscription; optional in-game purchases and paid random items are noted as well.

NBA The Run: choose this for quick 3v3 arcade games
NBA The Run is the clearest change of pace if full-length simulation basketball is not what you want. NBA.com describes 3v3 matches in a four-round knockout tournament with randomized rules. Its reported launch date was June 9, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, with cross-play. NBA.com’s game overview reported 32 NBA players and 11 courts at launch; those are product details, not independent measures of quality.
Pick it for compact arcade contests and cross-platform play among its listed systems. The cited launch information does not establish a particular local-multiplayer or offline offering, so verify those requirements in the current store listing before buying if they are essential.

Basketball Classics: choose this for retro 5-on-5 and local multiplayer
Basketball Classics takes the opposite arcade route from The Run: it keeps 5-on-5 basketball but pares the controls down. Xbox Wire describes a three-button control scheme, play calling, roster editing, story unlocks, and local multiplayer. It also reports more than 175 teams and 1,000 players, figures supplied as product details rather than independent counts. The Xbox version was covered by Xbox Wire.
Its local multiplayer makes it a natural candidate for playing together on one system, while the simplified controls and retro presentation are intended to feel different from a modern simulation. Confirm the current platform and store listing for your device; the cited Xbox coverage does not establish availability on every console or PC storefront.

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2: an older option for offline 2v2
NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 offers a throwback two-on-two arcade format featuring current and retired NBA players, according to 2K’s game FAQ. Its listed offline modes are Exhibition, Exhibition 3 pt Contest, NBA Season, and Court Editor. However, 2K’s status page scheduled online features to remain available only through August 20, 2026. Since that date has passed, treat it as an offline-oriented option and check the platform-specific listing before purchase. 2K’s service-status notice gives the scheduled cutoff.
NBA LIVE and NBA STREET: consider them only if you find a specific legacy release
EA’s catalog includes NBA LIVE entries, NBA LIVE Mobile, and NBA STREET games. It describes NBA LIVE 18 as combining player creation, NBA career play, and streetball courts. That catalog does not confirm that any particular older title remains purchasable or that its online features still work, so check the exact game, platform, and service status before relying on it. What happens to NBA 2K25 after its successor arrives?
If you still own NBA 2K25, its service dates matter when deciding whether to keep playing or buy another game. 2K says purchase availability ends October 30, 2026, the game is discontinued December 31, 2026, and online modes end January 1, 2027. Existing owners can still redownload it and play offline modes. These are scheduled dates, so check 2K’s server-status page for any updates.
