What are the best basketball games to play after a basketball simulator leaves Steam? If you want a current simulation-style game on Steam, NBA 2K27 is the clearest fit. If you would rather play a simpler retro arcade game, Basketball Classics offers a very different kind of basketball. The right choice depends on whether you want modern modes and online play or fast, side-scrolling action.
The departing game is not named here, so its removal date and remaining play options cannot be confirmed. A game being removed from sale is also different from its online servers shutting down.

These are not interchangeable versions of the same experience. 2K presents NBA 2K27 as its current simulation-style option, while Steam describes Basketball Classics as side-scrolling arcade basketball. The descriptions here come from the publisher and store pages, not independent gameplay testing.
Choose NBA 2K27 for a current simulation-style game
2K announced NBA 2K27 for PC via Steam and the listed consoles, with a worldwide release date of September 4, 2026. Its announced modes include MyCAREER, MyNBA, MyTEAM, The W, and MyWNBA. 2K says features vary by mode and platform, so check the Steam listing for the specific edition and features available on PC.
#1 Best Overall
- A WORLD OF BASKETBALL: NBA 2K22 puts the entire basketball universe in your hands. PLAY NOW in real NBA and WNBA environments against authentic teams and players.
- Build your own dream team in MyTEAM with today’s stars and yesterday’s legends.
- Live out your own pro journey in MyCAREER and experience your personal rise to the NBA.
- Flex your management skills as a powerful Executive in MyGM and MyLEAGUE.
For players who care about online longevity, 2K’s service-status table currently schedules NBA 2K27 online services through December 31, 2028. The table identifies Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA, and The W as offline modes. These are scheduled service dates and may change; consult the current NBA 2K server-status table before buying with online play as a requirement.
Choose Basketball Classics for retro arcade play
Basketball Classics is a 5-on-5 side-scrolling game from developer Namo Gamo and publisher Acclaim. Its Steam page describes simplified three-button gameplay, on-the-fly strategy, a one-player story mode, and local multiplayer. It also lists more than 175 teams and more than 1,000 players with individualized attributes. Steam gives its release date as December 18, 2019.

- The fun of the arcade, the convenience of home. High scores, 2 players, announcers, and bonus time without staring at a screen or sitting on a couch.
- We've been perfecting the game experience since 1981. Score tracking is nearly 100% accurate thanks to paddle scorers. 4 basketballs. 10 game modes. A large, 2 digit scoreboard, 6 audio options, AC or AA-battery powered, and the best announcer your side of the Mississippi.
- Built for years of family fun. Made from sturdy 1.5" steel tubes with powder coating to eliminate rusting and chipping with a heavy-duty nylon ramp.
- Not as big as you think. Game dimensions of 46" wide x 81" deep x 81" high. Folds to 29" deep for easy storage.
- Play worry free. The Dual Shot Sport comes with a best in class 6-Month warranty.
This is a better match if you want a deliberately simpler, arcade-paced game rather than a modern simulation. Its store page says it has no virtual currency, pay-to-win, or microtransactions; that is the store’s description, not an independent assessment. Check the Basketball Classics Steam page for current availability and price.

Removal from sale and the shutdown of online services are separate events. A delisted game may remain in an existing owner’s library, and offline modes may continue after server-dependent features end. The exact answer depends on the title and its publisher’s notice; because the departing simulator is unspecified, no removal or shutdown date can be given for it.

For example, 2K’s notice for NBA 2K25, updated October 2, 2026, says it is scheduled to leave sale on October 30, 2026, and be discontinued on December 31, 2026. Owners can still redownload it and play the offline modes named in the notice. From January 1, 2027, online modes, MyCAREER, MyTEAM, VC earning, and other server-dependent features are scheduled to end; Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA are listed as offline modes that remain playable. See 2K’s NBA 2K25 discontinuation notice for the title-specific details.
2K also says titles outside its current lineup, including NBA 2K24 and earlier games, are discontinued and no longer available for purchase. Owners may redownload them and play offline modes, but multiplayer and online features are unavailable after service retirement. For current service schedules, check the NBA 2K server-status table.

What to check before choosing
- Play style: Choose NBA 2K27 for the current simulation-style option in these recommendations, or Basketball Classics for side-scrolling arcade action.
- Platform: Confirm that your device is supported on the exact store page. The announced NBA 2K27 platforms include PC via Steam and the consoles listed above; Basketball Classics is confirmed by its Steam listing.
- Modes: Decide whether you want the career, franchise, team-building, and women’s basketball modes announced for NBA 2K27, or the story mode and local multiplayer listed for Basketball Classics.
- Online lifespan: If online features matter, check the publisher’s service schedule for the specific game. An online-service end date does not necessarily mean that every offline mode stops working.
- Edition and price: Verify the local store listing, included edition, and current price before purchase; prices and availability can change.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
