There is no single best banner printer for every business. The right choice depends on banner material, indoor or outdoor exposure, maximum width, monthly volume, finishing equipment, service access and total operating cost. For most professional work, HP Latex suits low-odor indoor and mixed-media production; eco-solvent systems from Roland DG, Epson and Mimaki are established choices for outdoor vinyl; and occasional users are usually better off outsourcing.
Quick comparison
| Best fit | Technology | Representative families | Key advantage | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor graphics, events and mixed media | Latex | HP Latex 700/800 | Water-based workflow, broad media support and selected white-ink options | Heat, power, maintenance and capital costs can be high |
| Outdoor vinyl banners | Eco-solvent | Roland DG TrueVIS, Epson SureColor S-Series, Mimaki JV330 | Mature sign-shop workflow with strong color and outdoor media availability | Drying, ventilation and exposure conditions affect results |
| High-volume 64-inch production | Solvent or eco-solvent | Epson S8170, Mimaki JV330-160, Roland TrueVIS XP/XG | Wide rolls and production-oriented throughput | Requires serious utilization, finishing and service support |
| Banners plus contour-cut graphics | Integrated printer/cutter | Mimaki CJV330, selected Roland TrueVIS models | One platform handles printing and cutting | Dedicated printer and cutter can be faster for banner-only work |
| Occasional campaigns | Outsourced service | VistaPrint or a local sign printer | Avoids equipment, maintenance, RIP, ventilation and finishing costs | Less control over rush work, media and production scheduling |
These are capability matches, not independent head-to-head test results. Manufacturer specifications vary by model, ink, media and print mode.
Start with the banner, not the printer
Specify the finished product before comparing machines. Common jobs include PVC scrim vinyl, mesh for windy sites, fabric or textile displays, backlit graphics, double-sided banners, pole banners, trade-show backdrops and short-term event signs. A printer that handles adhesive vinyl well may not support porous mesh, fabric or double-sided media without different hardware, profiles or an ink-collector configuration.
HP lists scrim, woven, smooth double-sided and porous applications across applicable systems; verify the exact model and media profile at HP’s banner application guide.

Latex
Latex systems use water-based inks and are attractive for retail, events and other indoor environments where low odor matters. They support many banner materials, and selected HP models provide white ink. HP describes outdoor workflows designed for heat, rain and wind, but useful life still depends on ink, media, climate, installation and whether the graphic is laminated. See the model-specific claims in HP’s banner documentation.
Eco-solvent
Eco-solvent is a conventional choice for vinyl banners, decals, vehicle graphics and outdoor signs. It offers saturated color, broad media availability and integrated printer/cutter options. Printed work may need outgassing or drying before lamination or installation, and ventilation and handling requirements vary. Roland says selected ink families can last up to three years outdoors without lamination; treat that as a manufacturer specification tied to particular ink, media and exposure conditions, not a universal guarantee. Read Roland’s banner guidance.
UV
UV ink cures under light, enabling flexible and rigid-substrate work with immediate handling. It is useful for specialty signage, but UV is not automatically superior for every banner. Confirm flexibility, adhesion, folding, welding and finishing performance on the exact material; some UV machines are designed primarily for rigid boards.
Aqueous or pigment inkjet
Aqueous printers can deliver excellent indoor photographic and presentation graphics at relatively low volume. They are generally a poor default for long-term outdoor vinyl unless specialty media, lamination or other protection is used, and narrower roll widths may limit commercial banner sizes.

HP Latex 700 and 800 families
HP lists the Latex 700 W and 800 W at a maximum 1.63 m (64 in) media width and 55 kg (121 lb) roll weight. Its published outdoor speeds are up to 31 m²/h (334 ft²/h) for the 700 W and 36 m²/h (388 ft²/h) for the 800 W. The HP Latex R2000 Plus supports rigid media up to 2.5 m wide and 5 cm thick, making it an industrial platform rather than a normal small-shop recommendation. Confirm media, ink and configuration details on HP’s current page.
Epson SureColor S8170
Epson’s U.S. listing, checked August 18, 2026, shows the 64-inch S8170 at a $24,995 MSRP. It uses six-color UltraChrome GS3 ink, including Light Cyan and Light Magenta, and Epson claims speeds more than 20% above the previous generation. The listing includes a one-year limited warranty, optional Preferred Plus plans, a displayed four-year next-business-day on-site plan priced at $7,540 and a preferred installation program priced at $2,210. These are U.S. list signals, not a complete installed cost. Details are on the S8170 product page.
Epson’s S-Series overview lists adhesive vinyl, banner material, canvas and film support. Epson also claims selected 11-color systems cover more than 99% of the PMS Formula Guide Solid Coated 2022 palette; actual gamut depends on model, media profiling, viewing conditions and color management.
Mimaki JV330
Mimaki lists the JV330-130 at $18,000 and JV330-160 at $18,500 on its U.S. site. The roll-to-roll eco-solvent series is specified for banners, signs, posters and indoor or outdoor graphics, with multiple-roll handling and an optional XY slitter. A published maximum of 1,076.4 ft²/h applies to a specified four-color mode; real output changes with pass count, resolution, ink limits, media, heaters, cleaning and finishing. See Mimaki’s JV330 listing.
Mimaki CJV330
The integrated printer/cutter is listed at $18,500 for the CJV330-130 and $19,000 for the CJV330-160, with the same published 1,076.4 ft²/h figure in a specified four-color print mode. It is suited to shops producing banners alongside decals, stickers and contour-cut signs. A banner-only shop may get higher throughput from a dedicated printer paired with a separate cutter. Specifications are on the CJV330 series page.
Roland DG TrueVIS
TrueVIS families cover eco-solvent printer and printer/cutter workflows for banners, decals, displays and outdoor signs. Selected models offer white ink. Compare ink capacity, cutter performance, RIP software and local dealer support rather than list price alone. Roland’s application information is at Roland banner solutions and its product family at TrueVIS.
Specifications that determine usable output
Width
About 24–30 inches suits smaller work; 54 inches is a common sign-shop width; 64 inches handles many full-size commercial banners. Choose for the largest finished banner you expect to sell. An undersized printer creates seams, trimming, labor and waste.
Speed
Compare square feet per hour in the quality mode you will actually use. Maximum figures often exclude loading, cleaning, drying, trimming, hemming, grommeting, inspection and reprints. The meaningful measure is usable finished output per shift.

Quality
Inspect gradients, fine text, skin tones, solid fills, banding, repeat-job consistency and white-ink opacity where relevant. Viewing distance matters: a distant outdoor banner does not need the same resolution as a close-viewed trade-show graphic. HP advises against automatically preparing every large-format file at 300 PPI; its guidance is available at HP’s large-format best-practices page.
Media handling
Check maximum roll weight and diameter, core size, banner thickness, mesh and fabric support, backlit and double-sided capability, and whether an ink collector or special platen is required. HP notes an ink-collector kit for applicable unlined mesh and porous textile work.
Service and environment
Ask about technician response times, printhead coverage, installation, training, parts availability and preventive maintenance. Verify electrical capacity, ventilation, floor loading, access routes, storage and operating clearances. Mimaki lists approximately 20–30°C (68–86°F) for JV330 operation; confirm the exact installation documentation at purchase.

- INK BOTTLES — Save on photos1 and creative projects with affordable in-house printing; All-in-one printer allows you to print 4" x 6" photos for about 4 cents each vs. 40 cents with traditional ink cartridges1
- LESS FREQUENT INK REPLACEMENT — Replacement ink bottles don't have to be changed nearly as often as ink cartridges¹; Printer, scanner and copier lets you print up to 6,200 color pages³
- PRINT FOR LONGER — Up to 2 years of ink in the box² (and with every replacement ink set) for fewer out-of-ink frustrations with this wireless printer
- ZERO CARTRIDGE WASTE — Epson EcoTank printer helps reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills; Cartridge-free printer uses high-yield ink bottles; Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 100 individual ink cartridges⁴
Finishing is part of the production system
A printer does not deliver a finished banner. Budget for a trimmer, hemming or welding method, grommet press, eyelets, pole pockets, banner tape, laminator where required, take-up equipment, inspection space and packing. Poorly placed grommets, weak hems and wind stress can ruin an otherwise excellent print.

- Install the ICC profile for the exact printer, ink and media combination.
- Use the intended media profile and consistent RIP settings.
- Manage RGB-to-CMYK conversion deliberately rather than relying on an untested automatic conversion.
- Proof brand colors, gradients, skin tones and dark areas before a large run.
- Test outdoor exposure, lamination, adhesion and finishing on the actual substrate.
Outdoor life is a system property involving ink, vinyl, profiles, curing or drying, lamination, orientation, climate, sunlight, abrasion and mounting. “Outdoor” does not mean permanent.
Ownership cost and the buy-versus-outsource decision

- Laminator, cutter and finishing equipment
Compare that annual total with supplier charges, shipping, rush fees, proofing, reprints and internal coordination time. Buying is usually sensible when volume is consistent, rapid turnaround has value, trained operators and finishing already exist, and the machine will also produce decals, vehicle graphics or posters. Outsourcing is usually better for irregular demand, low volume, limited capital or businesses without service and finishing capability.
For one-off or occasional jobs, VistaPrint’s banner service avoids ownership. Pricing varies with size, material, finishing, quantity and shipping. A local sign printer may be preferable when you need rush delivery, unusual finishing, installation or physical proofing.
Common buying mistakes
- Using a desktop or office printer that cannot accept heavy PVC scrim, mesh or commercial rolls.
- Choosing by DPI instead of visible quality, profiling and viewing distance.
- Comparing maximum speeds from different quality modes.
- Assuming a printer price includes installation, RIP, ink, service and finishing.
- Assuming every outdoor-life claim applies to every climate and media combination.
- Ignoring idle-time maintenance when printing only a few banners per week.
- Buying an integrated cutter when banner volume would benefit from separate high-speed equipment.
- Skipping a media test with the exact vinyl, mesh or fabric you plan to sell.
- Overlooking electrical, ventilation, temperature, storage and access requirements.
Recommendations by buyer
Small or occasional marketer
Outsource. The equipment, service, media and finishing costs of a $18,000–$25,000-class system are difficult to justify for sporadic campaigns.

Mixed banner-and-decal shop
Consider a Mimaki CJV330 or a Roland printer/cutter when contour cutting is frequent; choose separate printer and cutter when banners dominate and maximum throughput matters.
High-volume production department
Shortlist 64-inch production platforms such as Epson S8170, Mimaki JV330-160, Roland TrueVIS XP/XG or comparable HP Latex systems, then validate the complete installed workflow and break-even volume.
Quick Recap
The Bottom Line
Choose the banner material and required finished output first. Latex is a strong indoor and mixed-media option; eco-solvent remains a practical outdoor-vinyl standard; integrated printer/cutters suit mixed decal work; and low-volume buyers should outsource. The best investment is the complete, serviceable production system—not the printer with the most impressive headline speed or resolution.
