Best Backup Cameras for Boats: Marine Docking, Stern and Trailer-Ramp Picks (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best backup camera for a boat is the one that works with the chartplotter already at your helm. For a Garmin system, the surface-mount GC 245 is the strongest general-purpose docking choice; the flush-mount GC 255 suits permanent refits. Raymarine Axiom owners should start with the CAM300. Garmin’s GC 200 is better for a multi-camera IP surveillance system, while the GC 14 is the simpler analog retrofit.

This article focuses on cameras mounted on the boat for backing out of slips, watching stern blind spots and maneuvering near docks. If you need to see behind a tow vehicle while launching or retrieving a boat, skip to the trailer-ramp section; that is a different product category.

Quick picks

Use case Camera Why it fits Main limitation
Garmin docking retrofit Garmin GC 245 Surface mount, IPX7, wide 160° × 90° view and Garmin Marine Network/BlueNet integration Requires a compatible Garmin chartplotter and network

Backing a boat trailer Dedicated vehicle/trailer kit Designed for a tow vehicle, reverse trigger and separate monitor Does not integrate with a marine chartplotter by default

Garmin’s current marine-camera catalog lists the GC 14, GC 100, GC 200, GC 245 and GC 255, with composite, Wi-Fi, Garmin Marine Network and BlueNet connection options depending on model (Garmin camera catalog).

What “backup camera” means on a boat

Boat-mounted docking camera

A marine camera is normally mounted on a transom, stern rail, hardtop, arch, aft deck or inside the engine room. You select its feed on the chartplotter to see the dock, a blind stern corner, swimmers, fenders or the boat’s path while maneuvering.

Trailer or tow-vehicle camera

A trailer system mounts to the tow vehicle, trailer frame or tongue. It helps align the trailer with a ramp, monitor the boat and hitch and see behind a load that blocks the vehicle’s rear window. These products usually use an automotive head unit or a dedicated monitor rather than a marine MFD.

Why most marine cameras do not switch on in reverse

Boats generally lack an automotive reverse-light signal. A marine camera is normally powered with the electronics circuit and selected manually on the MFD; some displays can show several feeds at once. “Reverse video” usually means a mirrored image, not automatic activation or dynamic parking guidelines.

Compatibility comes before resolution

Garmin systems

The GC 14 uses composite video; the GC 100 uses Wi-Fi for video; the GC 200 uses Garmin Marine Network/IP; and the GC 245 and GC 255 use Garmin Marine Network or BlueNet. Garmin notes that current chartplotters may display up to 1280×720 even when a camera can output more, so the camera’s headline resolution is not the resolution you necessarily see (catalog; Garmin marine catalog PDF).

For third-party installations, Garmin’s integration guide discusses analog inputs, Ethernet, encoders, PoE switches and isolation components. Check the exact GPSMAP model, software version, network hardware and supported stream format before buying (Garmin third-party camera integration guide).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raymarine Axiom

Raymarine describes the CAM300 as designed for Axiom chartplotters. It supports ONVIF Profile S, image mirroring, direct 12-V power or PoE and up to four simultaneous CAM300 streams on one Axiom display (Raymarine CAM300).

Simrad, Lowrance and B&G

Ethernet alone does not guarantee compatibility. Verify supported protocols (including whether third-party ONVIF cameras are accepted), video format, MFD software, switch requirements and PoE power for the exact model. Manufacturer literature for IRIS cameras claims compatibility with Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Lowrance and some Garmin systems, but that remains a model-by-model claim, not a universal guarantee (IRIS product brochure).

Connection types and their trade-offs

Composite analog

Analog is conceptually simple, inexpensive and free from Wi-Fi congestion. It requires a long video cable, careful connector sealing and a display with the right composite input, and it provides lower resolution. The GC 14 is the Garmin example.

IP/Ethernet

Network cameras support higher-quality video, multiple feeds and sharing across displays, but require network design, marine-rated cabling and sometimes a switch or encoder. The GC 200 is an example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Power over Ethernet

PoE can carry power and data on one cable, but you still need a compatible PoE switch or injector, adequate power budget and properly sealed Ethernet routing. Raymarine lists the CAM300 as PoE Class 1 compatible as well as 12-V powered.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi reduces video-cable routing but does not make installation cable-free: the camera commonly still needs hardwired power. Fiberglass, metal bulkheads, carbon-fiber structures and crowded marinas can reduce reliability. Garmin describes the GC 100 as wireless to the chartplotter but hardwired for power (Garmin GC 100 announcement).

Best boat-mounted cameras

Garmin GC 245 — best overall Garmin docking camera

The GC 245 is a surface-mount camera intended for close-quarters docking and backing. Garmin lists Garmin Marine Network or BlueNet connectivity, IPX7 protection and a 160° × 90° viewing angle. Garmin announced a $699.99 U.S. MSRP; current dealer pricing and availability can differ (Garmin GC 245/255 announcement).

Choose it when you own a compatible Garmin MFD and want to avoid a hull cut. Skip it if your display is Raymarine, Simrad or an older Garmin without the required network support.

Garmin GC 255 — best flush-mount Garmin option

The GC 255 uses a stainless-steel thru-hull, flush-mount design for a cleaner permanent installation. It carries an IPX7 rating and uses Garmin Marine Network or BlueNet. Garmin announced a $999.99 U.S. MSRP (Garmin announcement).

It is appropriate for a new build or premium refit where appearance and a protected, low-profile mount justify invasive installation. It is a poor fit if you do not want to drill the hull.

Garmin GC 200 — best Garmin network camera

The GC 200 is a marine IP camera for stern, engine-room and general vessel monitoring. Garmin specifies up to 1920×1080 video, infrared night vision up to 30 m, IPX7 protection, Garmin Marine Network connection and sharing across compatible chartplotters; catalog material allows up to four camera feeds on one chartplotter (Garmin GC 200; Garmin catalog PDF).

Buy it for a serious multi-camera system. It is unnecessary complexity for a single low-cost stern view, and the MFD may limit the displayed resolution.

Garmin GC 14 — best analog Garmin retrofit

The GC 14 is a compact composite-video camera for compatible Garmin chartplotters with a video input. Garmin’s installation documentation directs owners to verify the exact GPSMAP model (GC 14 installation guide). It is attractive when existing wiring and the display already support analog video, but it is lower resolution and less future-proof than IP.

Garmin GC 100 — only for existing or closeout systems

The GC 100 provides 720p Wi-Fi video, one-button setup and hardwired power. Garmin lists it as discontinued on at least one regional product page, so treat remaining stock as used, closeout or existing-system inventory rather than a normal current recommendation (Garmin GC 100 information; Garmin discontinued listing).

What to check before buying

  • Display ecosystem: Identify the exact chartplotter model and software version before comparing cameras.
  • Intended view: Docking needs a wide, reversible, low-light view; engine-room monitoring may favor IR; multiple areas favor IP networking.
  • Mounting: Surface mounting avoids a hull cut; flush or thru-hull mounting is cleaner but permanent; bullet cameras suit directional views.
  • Field of view: Very wide lenses show more dock but can make distances look farther away. Test the actual helm view.
  • Night performance: Published IR distances are manufacturer specifications, not guaranteed docking range. Wet surfaces, spray, mist and dock lights can cause glare or backscatter.
  • Image orientation: Confirm horizontal mirroring and vertical inversion for the chosen mount. Do not assume “reverse video” includes parking guidelines.
  • Power: Check the camera’s operating range, fuse it correctly and use marine-grade wire, glands and connectors. Garmin lists 9–18 VDC for the GC 14 and 12/24-V compatibility for several network cameras; Raymarine lists 10.8–15.6 VDC for the CAM300.
  • Total installed cost: Include cable, waterproof glands, fuses, switch or PoE injector, mounting hardware, labor and any MFD or video-input upgrade.

Best camera for a boat trailer and launch ramp

If the problem is backing a trailer down a ramp, buy a dedicated vehicle/trailer backup-camera kit with a monitor or automotive-head-unit integration. It is designed for a tow vehicle’s reverse trigger, trailer alignment and rear visibility, whereas a chartplotter camera assumes a powered marine electronics network and manual feed selection.

Mounting on the trailer tongue or frame can help show the hitch and boat, but exposed connectors need marine sealing and protection from immersion. Wireless trailer kits still require dependable camera and monitor power, and range should be checked with the boat attached. A marine MFD camera can work only if the vehicle system and camera are separately engineered to support it; it is rarely the simplest ramp solution.

Installation guide

  1. Confirm compatibility. Record the MFD model, software version, available composite input, network ports, supported protocols and PoE capability.
  2. Test the location temporarily. View the proposed stern, dock and blind corners from the helm in daylight and darkness before drilling.
  3. Plan the cable route. Keep video or Ethernet away from ignition and high-current wiring, provide a drip loop and protect penetrations with suitable glands.
  4. Install protected power. Use a fused electronics circuit, correct polarity, marine-grade cable and a properly sized fuse. Do not connect to a reverse light unless the camera manual explicitly supports it.
  5. Connect the video path. Use a sealed composite run for analog, the manufacturer’s Wi-Fi procedure for wireless models, or a compatible marine Ethernet/PoE switch for IP cameras.
  6. Configure the display. Add the camera source, select the correct input or network device and update MFD software if required.
  7. Set orientation. Apply horizontal mirror or vertical invert so the helm image matches the boat’s actual movement.
  8. Test operating conditions. Check sunlight, darkness, dock-light glare, spray, condensation, fenders, swim platforms and propeller wash.
  9. Seal and secure. Tighten strain reliefs, seal mounting holes with a sealant appropriate to the surface and keep connectors out of direct spray where possible.
  10. Verify every helm station. If several displays should share the feed, confirm that each one can discover and decode it without overloading the network.

Marine durability: IPX7 and IP66 are different

Garmin lists IPX7 for the GC 14, GC 100, GC 200, GC 245 and GC 255. IPX7 primarily describes temporary immersion under test conditions and does not specify dust protection. Raymarine lists IP66 for the CAM300: dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets, but not a permanent-submersion rating (Garmin catalog PDF; Raymarine CAM300).

Common problems and fixes

No image

  • Check camera power, fuse, voltage and corroded connectors.
  • Confirm the selected MFD input and that analog, IP or Wi-Fi settings match the camera.
  • For IP systems, check network discovery, switch power, PoE budget, addressing and software compatibility.

Image is black

  • Clean spray or condensation from the lens and check whether infrared mode is active.
  • Increase display brightness and ensure the camera is not aimed at an unlit area or overwhelming dock light.
  • Verify that the camera output format is supported by the MFD.

Image is backward or upside down

Use the camera or MFD’s mirror, reverse-image, flip or invert setting. Garmin and Raymarine provide these controls on supported systems (Garmin catalog PDF; CAM300 specifications).

Wireless drops or video freezes

Reduce obstructions, move the antenna or chartplotter, check camera power and look for marina Wi-Fi congestion. On wired systems, inspect PoE capacity, switch load, stream settings and the number of simultaneous high-resolution feeds.

Water inside the housing

Stop using the camera and inspect the gasket, cable gland, connector seals, housing and mounting orientation. An IP rating does not authorize immersion beyond the stated test conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety limits

A camera is an observation aid, not a collision-avoidance sensor. Lens distortion, blind spots, latency, glare, spray and poor low-light contrast can hide an object. Keep an attentive helm watch, use crew communication and make physical checks when clearance matters. Thermal cameras are a separate, substantially more expensive technology and are usually unnecessary for ordinary stern docking.
