There is no single best backlink checker for every site. Ahrefs is a strong all-purpose choice for link and competitor research, Semrush fits teams that want backlink data inside a broader SEO platform, and Majestic is the most link-specialized option for page context and proprietary Flow Metrics. Choose by the reports you actually need—referring domains, new and lost links, anchors, link context, exports or ongoing monitoring—not by a headline index-size claim.

What a backlink checker actually measures

Backlink tools crawl the web and build their own indexes. Their counts, discovery dates and “new” or “lost” statuses can differ because crawlers cover different URLs, refresh on different schedules and apply different domain or page scopes. A vendor’s database is not the same thing as Google Search Console data, and none of the proprietary authority scores is a Google metric.

Google says, “Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl.” It also recommends descriptive, concise and relevant anchor text. A useful audit therefore looks beyond the total number of links.

  • Which sites and pages link to you?
  • Which destination pages receive links?
  • Are links followed or nofollowed?
  • What anchor text and surrounding context are used?
  • Which links were recently gained, changed or lost?
  • Can you compare competitors and export the findings?

Quick comparison

Tool Documented strengths Best fit Important qualification
Ahrefs Backlink Checker / Site Explorer Domain and page metrics, referring domains, backlinks, DR/AR, link-type filters, trends, linking-page traffic estimates, anchor and broken-link reports, PDF and CSV export. Initial checks, deep link research, competitor analysis and client reporting. The public checker is presented as a preview of the premium product. Exact free limits and plan entitlements can change. Ahrefs says its backlink index is updated every 15 minutes; that is a vendor statement, not an independent measurement.
Semrush Backlink Checker / Backlink Analytics Link totals, linking websites, Authority Score, top backlinks, follow/nofollow status, source titles and anchors, plus new/lost statuses. Paid analytics adds full profiles, comparisons, progress tracking, opportunities, filters and exports. Teams that want backlink reporting alongside broader SEO and link-building workflows. Semrush says its database contains more than 43 trillion backlinks and 390 million referring domains and is refreshed at least hourly (figures and wording can change). These are vendor claims, not a cross-tool accuracy ranking.
Majestic Site Explorer Backlinks, referring domains, anchors, new/deleted and broken links, Similar Sites, Link Context, Trust Flow, Citation Flow, and Fresh and Historic indexes. Specialist link investigation where placement, context and dedicated link metrics matter. Majestic says its Fresh Index is updated daily and its Historic Index contains 15 years of crawling data for Pro customers. Confirm current plan access.
Moz Link Explorer Listed as an option in a third-party comparison. Potential alternative to investigate. Its current official feature set, limits and differentiators were not established here, so verify them on Moz’s own product pages before relying on it.

Best tool by the job

For a quick free inspection: start with the public checkers

Use each vendor’s public checker to see what it reveals for a domain or page before creating a workflow around it. Ahrefs describes its free checker as a glimpse of the premium tool. Semrush describes the free view as a limited look, while full Backlink Analytics provides complete profiles, filters and additional reporting. Free quotas and visible rows change, so check the live product pages and your account’s current allowance.

For competitor research: Ahrefs or Semrush

Competitor work requires more than a total. You need arbitrary-domain lookup, referring domains, linking pages, anchors, link types and gained or lost links, followed by filters and exports. Ahrefs documents these reports in Site Explorer. Semrush adds domain comparison, progress tracking and link-building opportunities in its paid analytics workflow. Select the interface that fits the rest of your team’s SEO process.

For monitoring new and lost links: compare history and alerts

“Most accurate” is not an established cross-vendor result. A monitoring choice depends on how often the provider refreshes its index, how it defines a newly discovered or lost URL, what history it retains, and whether it offers alerts, trend views and exports. Ahrefs, Semrush and Majestic all document new/lost or trend-oriented reporting, but their crawlers will not observe the same events at the same time.

For anchors and link context: inspect the source page

Anchor text is useful only with its destination and surrounding placement. Majestic’s Link Context is designed for page-level placement and outbound-link context. Ahrefs and Semrush expose anchor and follow-status information. Check whether the link is editorially relevant, where it appears, what page it points to and whether it is followed or nofollowed.

For a link-focused specialist workflow: choose Majestic

Majestic concentrates on link intelligence: Fresh and Historic indexes, Similar Sites, broken links, Link Context and its Trust Flow and Citation Flow metrics. That focus can be preferable when link placement and historical crawling matter more than an all-in-one SEO suite.

For an all-in-one SEO platform: choose Semrush

Semrush is a practical fit when backlink analysis must sit beside other SEO tasks. Its documented paid reports add comparisons, progress tracking, opportunities, filtering and exports rather than leaving link research as a separate specialist tool.

How the proprietary scores differ

Provider Score names How to use them
Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) and URL Rating (UR) Use as Ahrefs-defined estimates for comparing link profiles inside Ahrefs; do not treat them as Google scores or guaranteed ranking factors.
Semrush Authority Score Use only within Semrush’s methodology and comparisons; it is not interchangeable with DR, UR or Flow Metrics.
Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow Use as Majestic’s machine-generated estimates of trust and citation patterns, not as universal measures of quality.

A high or low score alone does not prove that a link helps or harms a page. Review relevance, source quality, placement, destination, anchor and follow status before taking action. Do not disavow links solely because an automated score or flag is poor.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the task. Decide whether you need a one-off domain check, competitor prospecting, new/lost monitoring, anchor investigation, page-context review or recurring client reports.
  2. List mandatory reports. Require the fields your workflow needs: referring domains, source URLs, target URLs, anchors, follow status, discovery history, filters and export format.
  3. Check scope. Confirm whether the tool accepts any domain or page, and whether free access is a preview or a complete profile.
  4. Test your reporting path. Verify current CSV/PDF exports, row limits, account quotas, alert options and team permissions before committing.
  5. Cross-check owned sites. Compare vendor findings with your Google Search Console link report as a separate first-party reference. The two systems are built for different purposes and will not necessarily show identical totals.
  6. Recheck plan terms. Features, quotas, prices, index figures and partner terms change; confirm the live regional offer before purchase.

Why two tools show different backlink counts

  • Different crawlers: each provider discovers and revisits pages on its own schedule.
  • Different indexes: one may retain historical URLs or link records that another has not crawled.
  • Different scope: www versus non-www, subdomains, URL parameters and page-level versus domain-level views can alter totals.
  • Different status rules: a link may be marked lost, changed or newly discovered at different times.
  • Different filtering: duplicate links, redirects, canonical URLs and nofollow links may be counted or displayed differently.

When counts disagree, compare the same domain and URL scope, inspect sample source pages, note each index’s update date and treat the discrepancy as a coverage difference—not proof that one provider is universally accurate.

What to check before paying

  • Current regional price and billing term.
  • Monthly rows, projects, exports and API allowances.
  • Whether historical data and new/lost alerts are included in your plan.
  • Competitor-domain lookup limits.
  • Team seats, report sharing and PDF branding.
  • Definitions for each score and link-status field.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick Ahrefs for broad backlink and competitor research, Semrush for backlink work integrated with a wider SEO platform, and Majestic for specialist link context and historical analysis. Use vendor scores as internal comparison aids, validate owned-site findings against Search Console, and never treat any tool’s count or authority metric as a standardized Google measure.
