Use AWS Elemental MediaLive to ingest an MP4 from Amazon S3, set the file input’s Source end behavior to LOOP, and send a dedicated RTMP output to YouTube Live. Add MediaPackage only if you also need a packaged HLS playback endpoint for other viewers or clients; MediaPackage is not the service that loops the file or sends it to YouTube.
Recommended architecture
The YouTube path and optional playback path are separate outputs from MediaLive:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- YouTube Live: MP4 in S3 → MediaLive file input with Source end behavior set to LOOP → MediaLive channel → RTMP output to YouTube Live.
- Optional packaged playback: MediaLive HLS output → MediaPackage endpoint → playback clients or a CDN.
This design uses MediaLive’s documented file-input looping and RTMP output capabilities. AWS documentation cited here does not provide a YouTube-specific end-to-end configuration. Before configuring the destination, check YouTube Studio for the current RTMP ingest URL, stream key, and encoder requirements; do not rely on a hard-coded ingest address from an unverified guide. What each AWS service does
MediaLive: ingest, loop, encode, and deliver
MediaLive is the encoder and routing component. A channel can have output groups such as RTMP and HLS, and its file input behavior governs what happens when a file finishes. For one continuously repeated video, configure the file input’s Source end behavior as LOOP. MediaLive file inputs MediaLive file input looping

Amazon S3: source-file storage
Store the source MP4 in S3 and use it as the MediaLive file input. AWS’s dynamic-input documentation also identifies S3 as an eligible location for MP4 or TS inputs. MediaLive dynamic inputs
MediaPackage: HLS packaging for playback
MediaPackage receives live HLS from an upstream encoder such as MediaLive and packages it for downstream playback requests. Include it when you need that endpoint for playback clients; it does not replace MediaLive’s file-looping function or the distinct RTMP destination for YouTube. What is AWS Elemental MediaPackage? CloudFront: optional viewer distribution
AWS’s reference live-streaming architecture places CloudFront after MediaPackage to distribute packaged playback to viewers. Treat that as a viewer-delivery path, not a required part of sending the RTMP feed to YouTube. Live Streaming on AWS architecture overview
Configure a single-file loop
- Upload the source MP4 to S3. Confirm the object is accessible to the MediaLive input configuration and that it is the file you intend to repeat.
- Create a MediaLive file input that points to the S3 object. Use a file input rather than treating MediaPackage as the source or loop controller.
- Set Source end behavior to LOOP on the input attachment. AWS documents that MediaLive starts ingesting the file again when it reaches the end, continuing until a scheduled next input begins. File input loop behavior
- Create and configure the MediaLive channel. Attach the file input and create an RTMP output group for the YouTube destination. Set the destination URL and stream key from the current YouTube Studio stream setup, and verify output details against YouTube’s current requirements.
- Start the channel and verify both ends. Confirm MediaLive is processing the source and that YouTube Studio reports the incoming encoder feed before relying on the broadcast.
When the workflow needs more than one file
LOOP repeats the same file; it is not a playlist scheduler. For a sequence, use MediaLive’s scheduled input switches so one file input can follow another. AWS also describes a VOD-to-live use case in which file inputs run in sequence. Dynamic inputs can select different S3 or MediaStore MP4/TS files through schedule variables. Choose the transition behavior deliberately. LOOP repeats a file while waiting for the next fixed or immediate scheduled input. CONTINUE plays the file once, then uses input-loss behavior until the next input starts. Those are materially different outcomes if a scheduled switch is delayed or missing. MediaLive file input behavior
When MediaPackage belongs in the design
Add a separate MediaLive HLS output and connect it to MediaPackage if you need a MediaPackage playback endpoint in addition to YouTube delivery. A channel can have multiple output groups, which makes the separate RTMP and HLS paths the relevant architectural split. Confirm the settings supported by the chosen channel and the current requirements of each destination. MediaPackage is unnecessary for the YouTube RTMP path described here if no separate packaged playback endpoint is required.

Reliability and cost decisions
Do not assume the reference design guarantees YouTube redundancy
AWS’s reference live-streaming design uses redundant feeds and processing together with MediaPackage and CloudFront. That demonstrates reliability concepts for its packaged viewer-delivery architecture, but it does not establish automatic end-to-end redundancy for one S3 file loop delivered to YouTube. Validate input and channel-class constraints, and test the recovery behavior of the exact configuration you deploy. AWS live-streaming reference architecture
Estimate the whole continuously running workflow
The AWS documentation cited here does not provide a cost estimate for a particular workload. Before deployment, compare whether MediaPackage is actually needed, the required output formats and bitrate ladder, the resilience design, and the ongoing cost and operational work of keeping the channel running. Adding MediaPackage and CloudFront for playback adds a different delivery path; do not include them automatically in a YouTube-only design.

Troubleshooting checks
- The video stops at the end instead of repeating: Check that the attached file input’s Source end behavior is LOOP, rather than CONTINUE.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck the RTMP destination and stream key in the current YouTube Studio setup, then verify the MediaLive channel’s RTMP output configuration and channel state. The AWS material cited here does not establish a fixed YouTube ingest URL.
- The next video does not start as expected: Check the schedule’s input switch and confirm the selected behavior is appropriate. LOOP keeps the current file repeating while waiting for a scheduled next input; CONTINUE does not repeat it.
- Playback clients cannot use the MediaPackage endpoint: Confirm that MediaLive has a separate HLS output feeding MediaPackage and that clients are requesting the intended packaged endpoint. An RTMP output to YouTube does not itself create a MediaPackage playback endpoint.
- You need failover beyond file repetition: Do not treat looping as redundancy. Review input and channel-class constraints and validate recovery for the complete deployment; the cited reference architecture does not prove end-to-end YouTube failover for this workflow.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Looping or scheduling a file does not establish that you have rights to stream its video, music, or other included material. Confirm your rights before broadcasting, and check YouTube’s current rules for live streams and reused content in the context of your channel. AWS’s file-looping capability addresses playback behavior, not copyright clearance or YouTube policy compliance.
Or let it run in the cloud
