There is no single best simulator for every safety program. CARLA is the strongest open-source starting point for research and reproducible scenario work; NVIDIA DRIVE simulation and AlpaSim are the best-documented fit for high-fidelity sensors, reconstructed scenes, reactive closed-loop testing and very large campaigns; BeamNG.tech is the better match when vehicle dynamics, automated verification, HIL or DIL dominate; and Applied Intuition’s Validation Toolset and Cloud Engine add coverage, continuous-integration and requirements traceability around a simulator such as CARLA.
What an autonomous-driving safety simulator must prove
A simulator is useful only when its models, controls and evidence match the safety question being asked. The right platform lets a team vary the operational design domain (ODD), expose the vehicle to hazardous and rare events, run the same test repeatedly, connect the production software or hardware stack, and retain results that can be reviewed later.

Simulation demonstrates behavior under modeled conditions. It does not, by itself, establish that an autonomous vehicle is safe in the physical world or satisfy every ISO 26262, SOTIF or regional regulatory obligation. A credible program combines simulation with track tests, controlled on-road validation, safety-driver procedures, ODD analysis and documented model limitations.

CARLA: the strongest open-source starting point
Why teams choose it
CARLA describes itself as an open-source autonomous-driving simulator built on Unreal Engine. Its Python and C++ APIs expose vehicles, pedestrians, sensors, weather and traffic, so researchers can generate controlled experiments rather than depend on a fixed drive log. The project uses ASAM OpenDRIVE to represent roads and includes Scenario Runner for repeatable scenario execution.
That combination is especially useful when the engineering question changes frequently: testing a new planner, injecting a pedestrian at a precise time, sweeping rain and illumination, or reproducing a failure across software revisions. The open system also makes it practical to connect open autonomous-driving stacks. CARLA’s services documentation describes APIs and integrations with SUMO, Autoware and PTV-Vissim, distributed execution, procedural map generation from XODR and user-defined traffic situations.
Where CARLA is strongest
- Rapid prototyping without waiting for a commercial simulator contract.
- Custom sensor configurations, weather combinations and actor behavior.
- Research that must be repeatable and inspectable by collaborators.
- Integration experiments with ROS-based or Autoware-based stacks and traffic simulators.
- Scenario libraries that can be regenerated from road descriptions and run through Scenario Runner.
Where caution is required
“Realistic” rendered images are not the same as validated sensor behavior. Camera exposure, lidar returns, radar multipath, weather degradation, tire friction and object-response models can each differ from a production vehicle. Before using a CARLA result in a safety argument, define what was validated, under which conditions, and which physical measurements support the model. CARLA is a test environment, not a regulator-approved substitute for physical validation.

What the documented workflow offers
NVIDIA’s safety material argues that physical testing cannot controllably and exhaustively cover dangerous or rare situations. Its documentation describes physically accurate sensor simulation across emergency vehicles, pedestrians, animals, weather, roads and lighting. The stated goal is to exercise perception, prediction, planning and control under combinations that are expensive, dangerous or statistically uncommon to collect on public roads.
NVIDIA describes AlpaSim as an open simulation framework that combines Omniverse NuRec reconstructed scenes, configurable traffic and policy models, and scalable closed-loop testing. Its robotaxi simulation material emphasizes reconstructed and synthetic environments and reactive simulation: agent decisions change future scene states, so the test is not merely replaying a predetermined video.
Why reactive simulation matters
Suppose an autonomous vehicle brakes late for a merging car. A reactive model can let the other driver continue, brake, change lanes or create a secondary conflict according to its policy. That exposes the planner to consequences of its own actions. A non-reactive replay would show the same future frames even if the vehicle had behaved differently, which can hide important failures.

Best use cases
- Sensor and perception development where the validity of camera, lidar or radar inputs is central.
- Reconstructed locations that need to be combined with synthetic roads, traffic or weather.
- Rare-event campaigns involving emergency responses, animals, adverse weather or dense traffic.
- Closed-loop evaluation across very large scenario sets and virtual mileage.
NVIDIA uses qualitative scale language such as “millions of virtual scenarios” and “millions of virtual miles.” Those statements indicate intended campaign scale, not an independent benchmark comparing throughput, cost or fidelity with another platform. Ask for evidence of sensor and agent-model validation, scenario-coverage metrics, required compute, data pipelines and the engineering effort needed to connect the production stack.

BeamNG.tech: choose it when vehicle dynamics and HIL matter
Dynamics-centered testing
BeamNG.tech documentation positions the platform for ADAS, autonomous-driving and vehicle-dynamics work. Its BeamNGpy interface supports vehicle control, automated generation and execution of test scenarios, training-data workflows and validation or verification activities. Traffic can be simulated in settings such as cities, deserts and racetracks.
This emphasis is valuable when the safety question is not only “did the planner choose the right path?” but also “did the physical vehicle respond as expected?” Braking, steering, wheel slip, suspension movement, collisions and recovery maneuvers can influence whether a controller remains stable and within limits.
HIL and DIL support
BeamNG’s HIL/DIL documentation confirms support for hardware components and human drivers in the loop. HIL can put an actual electronic control unit or sensor interface into the test while the rest of the vehicle and world are simulated. DIL can include a human driver for takeover, handover or human-factors studies. These configurations help expose timing, interface and actuator issues that a purely software-based test may miss.
Questions to resolve before adoption
- Which sensor models are available, and how have they been correlated with the intended production sensors?
- Are the required road networks, traffic patterns and edge-case scenarios included or must they be built?
- What hardware interfaces, real-time guarantees and synchronization modes are supported for the planned HIL bench?
- What licensing applies to the desired number of users, machines, test hours or distributed runs?
The available documentation establishes the platform’s dynamics, automation and HIL/DIL orientation; it does not provide a universal sensor-fidelity score or a public price comparison.

This addresses a problem that a simulator alone does not solve: a team can generate thousands of runs yet still be unable to show which hazards were covered, which requirements passed, or whether a software change introduced a regression. A validation layer can connect scenario definitions, execution records, metrics, failures and requirement identifiers, then place the campaign in continuous integration.
When the extra layer is justified
- Multiple teams need a shared scenario catalog and consistent result schema.
- Every software commit should trigger a selected regression suite.
- Safety engineers need coverage views by ODD condition, hazard, maneuver or requirement.
- Auditors or reviewers require traceability from a requirement to scenarios, logs and verdicts.
Because the cited integration article is from 2022, confirm current product names, supported simulator versions, OpenSCENARIO implementation details, pricing and the CI systems available to your organization. Treat the tooling as complementary: it improves orchestration and evidence, but it does not remove the need to validate the underlying simulator.

A practical safety-testing workflow
1. Define the ODD and hazards
Write down road types, speed ranges, weather, lighting, traffic density, geographic limits, connectivity assumptions and the conditions under which the system is expected to operate. Convert those boundaries into hazards and unsafe control actions: an occluded pedestrian, an emergency vehicle approaching from behind, a stalled object after a crest, loss of lane markings or a cut-in during braking.
Recommended Free Tools
2. Match fidelity to the claim
Use a dynamics-focused model for tire, braking or stability questions; a sensor-focused model for perception; and reactive traffic for planning and interaction questions. A visually impressive environment is not automatically the right model for every claim. Record the assumptions and validation data for each model.
3. Build portable roads and scenarios
Represent road geometry with OpenDRIVE where practical, and manage event logic in OpenSCENARIO when the selected tools support the required version. Keep scenario parameters separate from the test runner so the same hazard can be executed in different environments. Include initial conditions, actor policies, weather, lighting, sensor configuration, software build and pass/fail metrics in the run record.
4. Connect the real software stack
Integrate the autonomy software through the platform’s APIs or middleware. Verify timestamp alignment, coordinate frames, sensor latency, dropped messages, vehicle-command limits and reset behavior. A scenario that cannot be reset deterministically is difficult to use for regression testing.

5. Exercise reactive and rare-event branches
Vary one factor at a time for diagnosis, then combine factors for interaction effects. Sweep pedestrian speed, occlusion, road friction, sun angle, rain intensity, traffic policy and sensor degradation. For each failure, preserve the exact seed or scenario parameters so another engineer can reproduce it.

6. Run campaigns at the appropriate scale
Use local runs for debugging and distributed or cloud execution for parameter sweeps and regression campaigns. Report the number of scenarios, completed runs, failed infrastructure jobs, simulation time, virtual distance and coverage dimensions. Do not treat virtual miles as a safety score without explaining what hazards and conditions those miles contain.
7. Measure safety-relevant outcomes
- Collisions, minimum time-to-collision and required braking or steering margins.
- Lane departures, road-boundary violations and violations of speed or right-of-way rules.
- Detection, classification and tracking performance under each sensor condition.
- Planner and controller response latency, oscillation, fallback behavior and safe-stop execution.
- Handover timing, driver response and human-machine-interface state when DIL is used.
- Coverage by hazard, ODD slice, actor type, weather, lighting, maneuver and software version.
8. Add HIL or DIL where interfaces can fail
Move from SIL to HIL when ECU timing, bus traffic, actuator limits or sensor interfaces are safety-relevant. Add DIL when takeover behavior, alerts or human reaction affect the risk. Check that the simulator runs with the timing and synchronization guarantees required by the hardware test; a visually correct but non-real-time loop may be unsuitable for that purpose.
9. Correlate with physical evidence
Compare simulated outputs with instrumented track tests, controlled road data or laboratory measurements. Document mismatches rather than tuning them away silently. Use simulation to find and prioritize risks, then use physical evidence to establish how well the model represents the vehicle and environment.
10. Preserve a reviewable safety case
For every requirement, retain the linked scenarios, simulator version, map and asset versions, random seeds, software build, configuration, logs, metrics, verdict and reviewer. Mark assumptions, known model gaps and tests that require physical confirmation. This is where a validation and traceability layer can provide more value than simply increasing scenario count.
Common failure modes and fixes
“We ran millions of miles, so the vehicle is safe.”
Large mileage can be dominated by easy, repetitive scenes. Break results down by hazard and ODD slice, and report scenario diversity and meaningful exposure. A campaign with fewer but well-designed rare-event cases may reveal more risk than a larger undifferentiated total.
Best Value
“The rendered scene looks real, so the sensor is validated.”
Visual appearance does not establish camera radiometry, lidar returns, radar behavior or timing accuracy. Compare sensor outputs with measured data under the conditions relevant to the claim and state the remaining uncertainty.
“A fixed replay is closed-loop.”
If other actors follow the same trajectory regardless of the autonomous vehicle’s action, the test is open-loop with respect to those actors. Use reactive policies when the safety question depends on interaction, then inspect whether policy assumptions are realistic.
“A simulator supports a standard, so every scenario will import perfectly.”
Standards improve interchange but do not eliminate differences in semantics, coordinate systems, road rules, weather models or unsupported features. Test a representative import/export set and version the standard used by each campaign.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“HIL means the whole system is real-time.”
HIL quality depends on deterministic timing, synchronization, I/O latency and fault injection. Measure those properties on the actual bench and define what happens when the simulator or hardware misses a deadline.
“Coverage analytics automatically prove compliance.”
A dashboard can show what was executed; it cannot decide whether the hazard model is complete or whether a requirement’s acceptance threshold is justified. Have safety engineers review the mapping from hazards to scenarios and from metrics to decisions.
Questions to ask vendors and internal stakeholders
- Which sensor, traffic and vehicle models have published validation evidence, and under what conditions?
- Can the system reproduce a run exactly, including random seeds, asset versions and software builds?
- How are actor policies configured, and can they react to the autonomous vehicle’s actions?
- What OpenDRIVE and OpenSCENARIO versions are supported, and which features are not?
- What APIs and middleware are available for the production autonomy stack?
- Can it run SIL, HIL and DIL with the required timing and synchronization?
- How are scenarios scheduled across machines, and how are infrastructure failures separated from vehicle failures?
- Can results be queried by hazard, requirement, ODD condition, software version and simulator configuration?
- What are the licensing limits for users, compute nodes, test volume and commercial deployment?
- What evidence is expected to connect simulation results to track, road and regulatory documentation?
Bottom line
Choose CARLA when openness, API control and reproducible research are the priority. Choose NVIDIA DRIVE simulation and AlpaSim when sensor fidelity, reconstructed environments, reactive agents and very large campaigns justify enterprise-scale infrastructure. Choose BeamNG.tech when vehicle dynamics, automated verification, HIL or DIL are central. Add Applied Intuition’s validation tooling when the main gap is not scene generation but continuous testing, coverage analysis and traceability to safety requirements.
Whichever route you take, treat simulated evidence as one layer of a safety argument. The strongest programs make model assumptions explicit, target rare and interactive hazards, preserve reproducible artifacts, and confirm critical conclusions with physical testing.
