For a stereo YouTube Live stream sent over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate as the practical baseline. YouTube recommends those settings for stereo live audio; they are encoder settings, not a loudness or mastering target. A Hindi devotional stream does not need a special audio profile: clean source recordings, sensible transitions, a rights-cleared playlist and checks in YouTube’s preview matter at least as much as the encoder values.

YouTube’s encoder settings page does not prescribe integrated loudness, a peak ceiling, compression ratio or a mastering target for devotional music. There is no supported universal LUFS number to apply simply because the stream contains bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani or other Hindi devotional material. Avoid treating a higher audio bitrate such as 320 Kbps as a guaranteed sound-quality improvement on YouTube Live; the published recommendation for stereo audio is 128 Kbps. Choose RTMPS or HLS for the workflow, not for a sound-quality preset
RTMP/RTMPS
RTMP/RTMPS supports AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, for delivery to its servers. For a typical encoder-based stream, stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz is a sensible baseline.
HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance also lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo, but the supported audio codecs differ: AAC, AC3 and EAC3. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. Follow YouTube’s HLS requirements for segment duration and playlist behavior if your workflow uses HLS; choosing it does not solve an audio-quality problem. Prepare the devotional playlist and check it end to end
Before starting a long-running stream, listen to the actual recordings and transitions you plan to broadcast. A short, representative test is more useful than checking a silent test pattern or unrelated audio. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and reviewing the preview.
- Check the source files. Listen for distortion, hiss, uneven levels, and abrupt starts or endings. Include both quieter devotional passages and the loudest material in your check.
- Listen through transitions. Check song changes, intros and outros, gaps, and any crossfades. A transition that sounds acceptable between two files on a computer may still produce an unexpected silence or level jump in the full playlist.
- Use the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that audio is present and listen for clipping, dropouts, sudden changes in level and unintended silence. Check with a normal playback device as well as monitoring headphones if available; headphones are useful but not required by YouTube.
- Test from the real streaming location. Use the same computer or hosted workflow and network that will carry the stream. YouTube recommends reliable upload capacity and advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If you send a primary and backup stream, account for both in the available upload capacity.
- Monitor during the event. Watch the encoder connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages, and keep checking audio and video quality while live. YouTube’s instruction is: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” This practical checklist is a way to apply that guidance, not a YouTube-mandated measurement standard.

Confirm music rights before streaming
A devotional subject does not automatically make a recording free to use. The sound recording and the underlying composition can have different rights holders. YouTube’s livestream terms make the provider responsible for having the rights needed for live content, including music licenses. Check that the permission covers the actual recording and its use in a live stream, not merely personal listening or a different format.

Even a creator with a license may need the rights holder to add the channel to an allowlist to avoid live interruption. If the stream is archived, a Content ID claim may also arise after it finishes. YouTube says music is safe to use when it is public domain or you have permission. Its Audio Library and Creator Music are resources to consider, but Creator Music’s current usage details say its tracks are for long-form videos and cannot be used in live streams. A “free” or “royalty-free” label by itself does not establish permission for your particular stream. Check YouTube’s tips to find safe music and Creator Music usage details.

For a self-hosted setup, the computer and encoder must keep sending the playlist to YouTube, and the local internet connection and power must remain available. That can give you control over the playlist and encoding, but it also makes continuity depend on equipment and connectivity at your site. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing alone does not establish uptime guarantees, suitability for a particular channel or current program terms. Common problems and what to check
- Audio is missing. Confirm that the encoder is using the intended audio source and that the selected codec and channel layout are supported by the chosen ingestion method; inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- Audio clips or sounds harsh. Recheck the source file and listen to the loudest passage. The 128 Kbps recommendation is a bitrate, not a remedy for distortion already present in the recording.
- Level changes sharply between songs. Compare quiet and loud tracks before streaming and review playlist transitions. YouTube does not specify a devotional-music loudness target, so do not assume a universal LUFS setting will normalize every source correctly.
- There are dropouts or encoder disconnects. Check the local network and available upload capacity, including any backup stream, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. Monitor stream-health messages during the event.
- The stream is interrupted for copyright. Verify rights for both the recording and composition, confirm that the license covers live streaming, and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting if you already have permission. Review the stream archive for possible later Content ID claims.
- HLS has more delay than expected. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. Check its segment and playlist requirements rather than changing audio bitrate in an attempt to reduce the delay.
