What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Virtual Caliper is the closest technical alternative to Atelier Karia’s planned adjustable-body feature if you want to enter measurements, edit a three-dimensional figure and export a rigged mesh. For realistic clothing fit, Marvelous Designer’s Avatar Editor is the better choice; for fast stylized rig changes, Charios is simpler and faster.
These tools do not reproduce the same game mechanic. Atelier Karia links body-shape changes to a character’s snack system, while the alternatives are creator, research or production software. The right choice depends on whether you value measured accuracy, garment fit, per-bone control, export, or a game-native experience.

What Atelier Karia’s body-shape system is expected to do
Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories is an upcoming role-playing game, not an avatar-authoring application. Announcement coverage describes a snack mechanic that can produce visible changes to Karia’s body shape. Players are expected to have three ways to handle that system:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Dynamic changes: allow the character’s shape to change as the mechanic operates.
- Shape changes off: prevent the body from changing.
- Preferred shape locked: choose a shape and keep it rather than allowing further changes.
That choice is the important baseline for this comparison. The feature is about agency over a character’s appearance inside a story-driven game, not about entering anatomical measurements or exporting a model. Koei Tecmo and Gust described the intent this way: “Whether you want to enjoy seeing Karia’s body shape change, keep your favorite body shape, or play without any body shape changes at all, the feature is being designed so you can enjoy the game in the way you prefer.”

Siliconera reported a planned release date of February 25, 2027, for Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC. Those are pre-release plans and may change before launch. A Gust/Koei Tecmo survey reported more than 38,000 responses; Siliconera said 78.9% wanted body-shape changes and 62.76% wanted the ability to lock a preferred shape. Those figures indicate interest in both visible progression and control, but they do not describe how many body states the finished game will contain.
How to judge an adjustable-body alternative
“Adjustable body shape” can mean very different things. A useful comparison separates four questions that are often mixed together.
Is the body model realistic?
Scan-based or measurement-driven systems aim to keep proportions plausible as dimensions change. Stylized rig tools may intentionally produce exaggerated silhouettes. A game-authored system can look coherent for its character while offering no anatomical or measurement guarantee.
How precise is the input?
Some systems begin with height, width, chest or inseam values. Others use sliders or multipliers. Measurement entry is useful when a body must correspond to a real person or a garment specification; a multiplier is quicker when you are iterating on a fictional character.
What is the control granularity?
Preset states provide the least control but are easy to use. Whole-body controls change a silhouette quickly. Per-bone controls let an animator alter a limb or segment without changing the entire figure. The more granular the controls, the more setup and rig knowledge you generally need.

What happens after you edit the body?
Atelier Karia’s planned feature is consumed during play. Production tools may let you create a mesh, fit clothing, test movement or export a file. If your goal includes animation, virtual reality or a game engine, export support matters as much as the slider range.
At-a-glance comparison
| Option | Body control | Realism and measurement | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Atelier Karia (planned) | Snack-responsive change, an off mode, or a locked preferred shape | Game-authored presets; exact range has not been documented | Playing through a character-driven game | Unreleased; implementation details may change |
| Virtual Caliper | Measurement input, real-time VR editing and mesh export | Strong measurement orientation | Accurate avatars, research and VR workflows | Requires software setup and registration |
| Marvelous Designer Avatar Editor | Height, width, chest, inseam and other detailed measures | Powered by thousands of real body-scan data | Digital garments and fit visualization | Creator software rather than gameplay |
| Charios | Whole-rig multipliers plus length and width controls for an active bone | Stylized rather than scan-based | Animation and game-rig iteration | Less suited to measurement-led anatomical work |
Virtual Caliper: best for measured, exportable avatars
What it provides
Virtual Caliper is the strongest match when “adjustable body shape” means building a body from dimensions and obtaining a usable 3D asset. Its official project describes a metrically accurate avatar workflow rather than a collection of purely visual presets.
The project is divided into complementary applications:
- BodyCreator: a desktop application that creates body shapes from measurement input.
- BodyMeshExporter: creates female or male skeletal meshes in FBX format.
- BodyCreatorVR: provides real-time body-shape modification through a three-dimensional interface.
A practical Virtual Caliper workflow
- Collect the dimensions you need. Decide whether the project requires a real person’s measurements, a target size specification or a hypothetical body. Measurement-led planning prevents you from treating a visual approximation as an exact reconstruction.
- Build the body in BodyCreator. Enter the available measurements and inspect the resulting proportions. Keep a record of the units and measurement definitions used so that a later revision is comparable.
- Review the shape in three dimensions. Check the silhouette from front, side and rear views. A set of matching numbers can still produce a result that needs visual review, especially when the source measurements are incomplete.
- Use BodyCreatorVR when real-time manipulation is more useful than typing values. The VR application is intended for interactive body-shape modification, which can make proportion decisions easier to assess spatially.
- Export with BodyMeshExporter. The exporter creates a skeletal female or male mesh in FBX. Confirm that the receiving application accepts FBX and that its rig, scale and coordinate expectations match the exported asset before building a larger pipeline around it.
Why it is the closest alternative
Atelier Karia’s defining idea is that the body can change while the player remains in control. Virtual Caliper covers the “change the body” part with substantially greater precision: the input is measurement-oriented, the body is represented in 3D, and the result can leave the application as a rigged mesh. It is therefore the best choice for researchers, VR prototypes and developers who need a body asset downstream.
Where it does not match the game
Virtual Caliper is not a snack-driven progression system, and it does not replace the narrative context that makes Karia’s feature distinctive. It also introduces setup and registration requirements. Choose it for an asset pipeline, not for a game-like body-change experience.

Marvelous Designer Avatar Editor: best for realistic clothing and fit
How its body editing works
Marvelous Designer’s Avatar Editor is built around garment creation and fit. Its documentation says the editor is powered by thousands of real body-scan data. The Size Editor exposes total-body controls such as height and width alongside detailed measurements including chest and inseam. When a measure is not directly assigned, the system automatically adjusts it toward a realistic body shape.
This design makes the editor particularly useful when the question is not merely “Can I make the waist wider?” but “How will a garment sit on a body with these proportions?” The body is a fitting reference for patterns, clothing assets and visualisation.
A fit-focused workflow
- Start with the target body. Decide whether you are matching a known person, a size specification or a fictional character. The choice determines which dimensions should be treated as fixed.
- Set global proportions first. Adjust height and overall width before entering detailed values. This establishes the broad silhouette that the detailed measurements will refine.
- Enter detailed dimensions. Use controls such as chest and inseam, plus the other measures exposed by the Size Editor, to bring the avatar toward the intended proportions.
- Let the editor resolve unassigned measures. Unassigned values are automatically adjusted toward realistic body shapes. Review those resulting dimensions rather than assuming that an omitted value remains neutral.
- Evaluate the clothing on the edited avatar. Inspect tight areas, looseness and silhouette changes as the body changes. The value of this workflow is the relationship between body and garment, not a game-style progression loop.
When to choose it over Virtual Caliper
Choose Avatar Editor when clothing is the deliverable. It is a stronger fit for pattern development, digital wardrobe work and visual fit checks because the body controls are presented in the context of garments. Choose Virtual Caliper when the primary deliverable is a metrically oriented, exportable avatar rather than a dressed figure.
Important limitation
Avatar Editor is creator software, not a consumer game. It does not reproduce Atelier Karia’s choice between dynamic changes, no changes and a locked preferred shape. Its advantage is realistic proportion editing for production tasks.

- Whole-body controls: width and height multipliers can reshape the entire rig. Examples describe an approximate range of 0.5× to 2.0×.
- Active-bone controls: length and width adjustments apply to the selected bone, allowing a limb or other segment to change without scaling the whole character.
- Mirroring: left/right symmetry can be maintained when editing paired bones.
The combination is useful when an artist needs to try several silhouettes quickly. A whole-rig multiplier can establish a broad shape, then an active-bone edit can refine a specific proportion.
A rig-iteration workflow
- Choose a sensible starting rig. Charios works by reshaping an existing rig, so the initial skeleton and mesh should already support the character’s intended movement.
- Block the silhouette with whole-body multipliers. Adjust height and width in the broad 0.5×–2.0× range described in the examples. Move in small increments and check the result in the poses your project actually uses.
- Select the bone that needs local correction. Use the active-bone controls for length or width when a global change would damage other proportions.
- Enable mirroring for symmetrical edits. Mirrored changes reduce accidental left/right differences. Turn symmetry off only when an asymmetrical design is intentional.
- Test the deformed rig in motion. A shape that looks good in a neutral pose can produce unwanted joint compression or stretching when animated. Review the key poses before committing the proportions.
What Charios is—and is not
Charios is the quickest option here for stylized character iteration and animation-rig experimentation. Its controls are multipliers and bone edits, not a body-scan measurement model. If anatomical fidelity, a known person’s dimensions or garment sizing is the priority, Virtual Caliper or Avatar Editor is a better starting point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A technical reference: personalized-garment avatar systems
The peer-reviewed paper Designing Personalized Garments with Body Movement describes an interactive system that builds custom-fit garments on 3D body scans, adjusts a garment’s rest shape and interpolates the result across poses. It is not a consumer replacement for Atelier Karia, Virtual Caliper, Avatar Editor or Charios. Its value is conceptual: it shows how body shape, garment fit and movement can be treated as one problem instead of separate static steps.
Readers designing a future clothing or avatar pipeline can use that model to ask better questions: Does the body remain plausible in motion? Does a garment preserve fit across poses? Can a change be interpolated rather than rebuilt for every stance? Those questions matter once an adjustable body is intended for animation or virtual try-on rather than a still image.

Choose Marvelous Designer Avatar Editor for clothing
Select it when the body is primarily a fit reference. Height, width, chest, inseam and other detailed measures are useful only if you will inspect how garments respond to them; that is where Avatar Editor is strongest.
Choose Charios for animation speed
Select it when you already have a rig and want to explore stylized proportions quickly. Whole-body multipliers provide broad changes, while active-bone controls handle local corrections and mirroring helps preserve symmetry.
Choose Atelier Karia for a game-native experience
Select the game itself if the appeal is seeing body shape respond within a character-driven adventure while retaining the ability to disable changes or lock a preferred shape. None of the creator tools supplies that narrative and progression context.

What remains unknown about Atelier Karia
Announcement coverage confirms the three player-facing choices, but it does not establish several implementation details that would matter to someone comparing it with an editor:
- The exact number of body states or the continuous range between them.
- The formula that converts snacks or other gameplay actions into shape changes.
- Whether the mode can be changed at any point in an existing save or only at particular settings screens.
- Pricing, edition details and regional availability.
- Whether the planned February 25, 2027 date and the Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC platform list will remain unchanged.
Until the developer publishes those details, treat the game as a controlled set of authored states with player choice, not as a measurement editor. Do not assume that a locked shape implies arbitrary slider access, or that turning changes off removes every visual variation unrelated to the snack mechanic.
A decision checklist before you commit
- Define the output: in-game appearance, a fitted garment, a rigged FBX mesh or a moving avatar.
- Identify the input you actually possess: measurements, a scan, an existing rig or only a visual target.
- Decide how much control is necessary: a few authored states, whole-body scaling or per-bone edits.
- Plan for symmetry and motion: local edits need mirroring decisions and pose checks.
- Check interoperability early: an export is useful only when the receiving tool accepts its file type, skeleton and scale.
- Separate realism from convenience: scan- or measurement-led systems require more setup, while multipliers are faster but less anatomically grounded.
- For Atelier Karia, verify launch information close to release: the reported date, platforms and implementation are pre-release information.
The shortest answer is therefore goal-dependent: Virtual Caliper is the closest technical substitute for adjustable, exportable body construction; Marvelous Designer Avatar Editor is the best realistic fit tool; Charios is the fastest stylized rig editor; and Atelier Karia remains the only option in this group built around body-shape change as a player-controlled game mechanic.
