Best Aspect Ratios and Export Settings for Vertical Video (2026 Guide)

Use a 9:16 portrait canvas for full-screen vertical video; 1080×1920 is a practical Full HD starting point. Export progressively in a platform-compatible format, preserve the frame rate you recorded, and keep important graphics clear of interface overlays. Those choices solve most crop and quality problems, but the correct bitrate, duration and file limits depend on the destination and on whether you are posting organically or buying an advertisement.

YouTube publishes the clearest encoding targets: MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, variable bitrate, source-matched frame rate and BT.709 for SDR. Its 1080p reference is 8 Mbps at 24/25/30 fps or 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. TikTok’s published figures below apply to Non-Spark in-feed ads, not ordinary uploads. Current first-party organic limits for Instagram Reels and TikTok should be checked in their upload interfaces before you render a final master.

What aspect ratio should I use for vertical video?

Choose 9:16 when the finished video should fill a modern phone screen in portrait orientation. A 9:16 frame is twice as tall as it is wide, so common proportional canvases include 720×1280, 1080×1920 and 2160×3840. The 1080×1920 version is a sensible quality-to-file-size compromise for most editing projects; it is a practical common canvas, not a documented universal organic-post requirement for every service.

Set the project, graphics and export dimensions to the same ratio. If you place a 16:9 recording inside a 9:16 sequence, you must either crop the sides, add background treatment, or leave visible bands. Decide that treatment before editing so captions, faces and products are composed for the final crop rather than for the original camera frame.

When another ratio is appropriate

  • Square (1:1): useful when the same asset must fit a square placement or when a deliberately compact composition is more important than full-screen immersion.
  • Landscape (16:9): appropriate for conventional desktop or television viewing, not for a full-screen portrait feed.
  • Mixed delivery: make separate 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 versions when the subject, captions or call to action cannot survive a single crop. Do not assume that one “universal” file will look intentional everywhere.

YouTube says its player adapts to vertical and square uploads even though the computer player’s standard ratio is 16:9. That player behavior means a vertical upload can display correctly; it does not make 16:9 the right editing canvas for a portrait-first story.

How to set up a 9:16 project

  1. Create a portrait sequence: enter width 1080 and height 1920 (or another pair with the same 9:16 proportion).
  2. Choose progressive scanning: use a progressive timeline and export. Interlaced fields can create combing and are unnecessary for current web feeds.
  3. Set the timeline frame rate to the camera source: common sources are 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps. Do not change it merely to match a generic preset.
  4. Preview at 100 percent: inspect small text, hair, fine patterns and motion at the output size. A clip that looks sharp in a large preview may reveal aliasing or unreadable type in a phone feed.
  5. Keep a clean master: retain the highest-quality export before uploading. Re-encoding an already compressed download compounds softness and block artifacts.

Framing for the tall canvas

Place the eyes, product or other focal point where the intended crop leaves breathing room above and below. A horizontal source often requires keyframed horizontal movement so a person does not drift out of the narrow frame. Check every cut, not only the opening shot; a crop that works for one scene can hide a face or a hand in the next.

Design captions as part of the composition. Use a readable size, strong contrast and enough line spacing for a narrow screen. Keep text away from the extreme top and bottom edges, where app controls, descriptions, navigation bars and account information can cover it. There is no single safe-zone measurement that applies to every placement: overlays vary by service, creative format, caption length and device. Use the destination’s live preview for the exact placement.

Platform requirements at a glance

The following figures separate documented rules from practical production choices. A limit listed for an advertisement is not an organic-post rule.

Destination Aspect-ratio guidance Duration or size Encoding details established here Scope
YouTube video uploads Player adapts to vertical and square; the computer player’s standard ratio is 16:9 Not stated for ordinary uploads in the cited guidance MP4 container, H.264, progressive scan, variable bitrate, source-matched frame rate, BT.709 for SDR; 1080p reference: 8 Mbps at 24/25/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps General YouTube upload encoding guidance

Instagram Reels organic posts Current first-party organic limits were not established here Verify in the current upload flow Verify current accepted dimensions, codecs and file limits before final export Organic posting

Best YouTube export settings

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings are the most specific targets available for this workflow. Export an MP4 containing H.264 video, use progressive scan and variable bitrate, and encode at the same frame rate in which the material was recorded. The guidance explicitly says that content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded. Matching avoids an unnecessary conversion step that can introduce cadence judder, duplicated frames or dropped frames.

Resolution and color

A 1080×1920 portrait file is a 1080p-class vertical export. For standard-dynamic-range material, YouTube recommends BT.709. Keep the project and export color management consistent; an unexpected transfer or color-space conversion can make a file look washed out or overly dark after processing.

Bitrate targets

For 1080p SDR uploads, YouTube’s reference table lists 8 Mbps at 24, 25 or 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 48, 50 or 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of identical quality for every scene or codec and not a universal optimum for TikTok or Instagram. High-motion footage, confetti, foliage, water and fine text are harder to compress than a static interview, so inspect a short test export before committing to a long render.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio

The cited YouTube guidance establishes the video container and codec choices but does not provide a universal audio setting for every workflow. Use the audio format offered by your editor’s current YouTube-compatible preset, listen for clipping and confirm that the export contains the intended sample rate and channels. Avoid replacing clean source audio with a second lossy encode simply because a preset offers a lower-quality option.

YouTube Shorts: square is allowed, portrait is usually the design choice

YouTube Help describes a qualifying Shorts file as “Up to 3 minutes” and “With a square or vertical aspect ratio.” Therefore, a 1:1 file can qualify. If the goal is a phone-filling portrait presentation, 9:16 gives you substantially more vertical canvas and lets captions, demonstrations and full-body action use the screen. Treat the three-minute figure as the stated Shorts limit; it does not set a duration limit for every other type of YouTube upload.

Export the Shorts file with the same basic encoding discipline as a regular upload: progressive video, a compatible MP4/H.264 workflow and the source frame rate. YouTube will process the file after upload, so a clean, correctly proportioned source gives the service less unnecessary work.

TikTok specifications: separate paid ads from organic uploads

TikTok for Business’s June 2026 specification recommends a 9:16 Non-Spark in-feed advertisement of at least 540×960 pixels. It also lists horizontal and square creative, supports the video formats named in that specification, permits a maximum duration of 10 minutes, sets a maximum file size of 500 MB and states a minimum bitrate of 516 kbps. Every one of those numbers belongs to that paid in-feed advertising product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not label 540×960, 10 minutes, 500 MB or 516 kbps as TikTok’s general organic-upload rules. Organic posting requirements were not established in the available first-party material. Before publishing an organic video, open the current TikTok uploader or help documentation and confirm the accepted dimensions, duration, codec, file-size and frame-rate limits for your account and region.

Instagram Reels and organic TikTok: verify before rendering

There is no dependable current first-party organic specification in the material available for this guide. That means a careful workflow is more useful than a guessed “best” number:

  1. Open the current mobile or web upload flow for the account that will publish the video.
  2. Record the displayed maximum duration, accepted file types, dimensions, frame-rate choices and file-size warnings.
  3. Check the preview after selecting the file. Look for automatic zoom, side crops, muted audio or a warning that triggers additional compression.
  4. Keep a 9:16 1080×1920 master, then make a delivery copy that meets the current service-specific limit.

Platform rules can change independently. A file accepted by an advertising manager may be rejected by an organic uploader, and a file accepted today can receive a different warning after an app update. Treat the live upload interface as the final compatibility check rather than relying on an old preset.

Why does a vertical video get cropped?

The source and sequence ratios differ

A 16:9 clip placed in a 9:16 sequence has excess width. If the editor is set to “fill” or “scale to frame,” it will crop the sides to remove that width. Reframe the shot manually, reduce its scale and add a designed background, or create a separate portrait crop from the original high-resolution footage.

The platform applies a placement crop

Feeds can use different crops for previews, profile grids, full-screen playback and advertisements. A face or caption positioned safely in the full-screen preview may be trimmed in a thumbnail. Check every placement offered by the destination and keep essential information toward the central area without treating any single measurement as universal.

The file is rotated incorrectly

Some cameras store portrait orientation as metadata instead of physically encoding a tall frame. If an editor or uploader ignores that metadata, the clip can appear sideways or be fitted as landscape. Confirm that the exported pixel dimensions are actually portrait (height greater than width), then re-export rather than relying on a rotation flag alone.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Why does a vertical video look blurry after upload?

The upload is being transcoded

Services create their own playback versions. Even a sharp master can look softer immediately after upload while processing is incomplete. Wait for the highest-quality version to finish, then review on a reliable connection before diagnosing the source.

The master is too small or over-compressed

Upscaling a 540×960 recording to 1080×1920 cannot restore detail. Start with the highest practical camera resolution and export once. A very low bitrate can turn fine text, hair and motion into blocks; a very high bitrate cannot force a platform to preserve detail it discards during its own transcode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame-rate conversion is creating motion artifacts

Converting 60 fps to 30 fps, or 24 fps to 30 fps, can produce uneven motion when the cadence is handled poorly. Use the recorded frame rate for YouTube, and create a deliberate conversion only when a destination or editing requirement demands it.

Color or sharpening is misleading your eye

Excessive sharpening creates halos that become ringing after compression, while a color-space mismatch can make edges appear dull. View the exported file, not only the editor preview, at 100 percent and on the type of screen your audience uses.

Safe-area planning for captions, faces and calls to action

Reserve a visually quiet margin along the top and bottom and keep critical text away from the sides where a crop can occur. TikTok’s advertising material provides downloadable ad safe-zone files and notes that dimensions depend on format and caption length. That is useful for paid creative, but it is not a universal organic safe-zone rule.

A practical review checklist

  • Play the video with the destination’s interface visible.
  • Check the first and last frames, where titles and buttons are most likely to overlap.
  • Verify captions remain readable when the video is viewed without pausing.
  • Test both a clean full-screen preview and the feed thumbnail or grid preview.
  • Move logos and legal text inward if any placement masks them.

A repeatable export workflow

  1. Duplicate the edit: preserve an editable master and make a delivery sequence for the destination.
  2. Confirm dimensions: use 9:16 for portrait-first delivery; verify that height exceeds width in the export settings.
  3. Confirm frame rate: match the recorded source for YouTube and avoid arbitrary preset changes elsewhere unless the current platform requires one.
  4. Choose the codec: for YouTube, select MP4, H.264, progressive scan and variable bitrate.
  5. Set bitrate deliberately: for 1080p SDR YouTube delivery, use the 8 Mbps reference at 24/25/30 fps or 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. For other services, use their current documented target rather than copying these figures.
  6. Check color: keep SDR material in BT.709 for the YouTube workflow and make sure your editor is not applying an unintended HDR conversion.
  7. Review audio and captions: listen through, inspect text at phone size and check for clipping or sync drift.
  8. Render a short sample: export a representative section containing motion, faces, text and dark areas. Inspect it on a phone before rendering the full program.
  9. Upload and wait for processing: compare the completed high-quality playback, not only the first low-resolution preview.

Choosing settings when one file must serve several platforms

Start with a 9:16 1080×1920 master at the camera’s frame rate. This preserves a flexible portrait source without claiming that every service requires those exact pixels. Make platform-specific copies when a destination sets a different duration, file-size or advertising requirement.

Situation Recommended approach Reason
Portrait-first organic campaign 9:16 master; verify each uploader’s current limits; export separate duration copies Organic rules for Instagram and TikTok are not established by the cited material
YouTube Shorts 9:16 MP4/H.264, source frame rate, up to 3 minutes Matches the stated Shorts ratio and duration while preserving portrait presentation
YouTube 1080p SDR at 30 fps Progressive MP4/H.264, variable bitrate, BT.709, 8 Mbps reference Uses YouTube’s standard-frame-rate reference
YouTube 1080p SDR at 60 fps Progressive MP4/H.264, variable bitrate, BT.709, 12 Mbps reference Uses YouTube’s high-frame-rate reference
TikTok Non-Spark ad 9:16 at least 540×960; remain within 10 minutes, 500 MB and 516 kbps minimum These are the cited paid in-feed specifications, not organic rules

Common export mistakes and fixes

  • Using 16:9 because the editor opens with it: create a portrait sequence before placing clips.
  • Stretching instead of cropping: preserve proportions and reframe; stretching makes people and objects visibly wider or taller.
  • Putting subtitles at the extreme bottom: raise them and verify against the live interface.
  • Using an advertisement limit for an organic post: confirm the organic uploader separately.
  • Changing frame rate to an arbitrary preset: match the recording for YouTube and convert only for a documented need.
  • Exporting repeatedly: return to the clean master for each new delivery copy.
  • Judging quality before processing ends: wait for the destination’s highest-quality playback.

Bottom line

For a full-screen portrait video, build a 9:16 project and use 1080×1920 as a practical canvas. Export progressive MP4/H.264 with variable bitrate, preserve the recorded frame rate, and keep important content away from changing overlays. On YouTube, follow its SDR references of 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24/25/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps, with BT.709. Treat TikTok’s 540×960, 10-minute, 500 MB and 516 kbps figures as Non-Spark ad specifications only, and verify current organic rules for every service immediately before upload.
