Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a U.S. cable customer, the ARRIS SURFboard G34 is the most straightforward starting point among the models covered here when the plan is listed at up to 1 Gbps. The G36 is the more relevant candidate when you need a 2.5 Gbps wired Ethernet port. Neither conclusion is a controlled performance ranking: both are shortlist positions based on published product descriptions, and your exact ISP approval and plan provisioning still decide whether a device can be activated.
First identify the type of internet handoff in your home. These products contain cable modems that terminate a coaxial DOCSIS connection. They do not replace the optical network terminal (ONT) used by a fiber provider. The G20 can be configured as a router behind a fiber or Ethernet handoff according to an answer attributed to the ARRIS SURFboard Team, but that answer specifies a 1 Gbps Ethernet ceiling.

What an Arris modem-router combo actually does
A modem-router combo combines two jobs in one enclosure. The cable modem converts the provider’s DOCSIS signal on a coaxial cable into an Ethernet connection, while the router shares that connection with wired devices and creates a Wi-Fi network. Buying one box can simplify installation, power, and troubleshooting compared with a separate modem and router.

A cable modem must be authorized by the cable provider for the exact model and service tier. Wi-Fi branding does not change that requirement, and a higher-rated Ethernet port cannot make an unapproved modem work.

Cable service versus fiber service
Cable internet normally enters through a threaded coaxial wall outlet. The modem inside a combo such as the G34, G36, or G20 is designed to communicate with that DOCSIS network. Fiber service instead terminates at an ONT or another provider-supplied optical handoff. Plugging a fiber line directly into a coaxial cable modem is not a compatible installation.
A combo can sometimes be used only as a router after the provider’s ONT supplies Ethernet. The model-specific G20 answer says it can serve that role for fiber or Ethernet service, with its Ethernet connection limited to 1 Gbps. Treat that as a router-only configuration, not as evidence that the G20 replaces an ONT or supports every fiber plan.
Top Arris combo choices at a glance
| Model | What the published description establishes | Best use in this guide | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARRIS SURFboard G34 | DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, Wi-Fi 6 router combo; listing names Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity and other cable providers; positioned for cable plans up to 1 Gbps. | Mainstream cable-plan candidate when your approved plan is within the listed 1 Gbps tier. | The “up to 1 Gig” wording is a listing position, not a guarantee of household throughput. Confirm the exact model and tier with your ISP. |
| ARRIS SURFboard G36 | DOCSIS 3.1 multi-gig cable modem and Wi-Fi 6 router combo; listing calls out a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port and major cable-provider compatibility. | Candidate when a 2.5 Gbps wired port is useful for a multi-gig-capable local network or service. | The port specification does not prove that your ISP plan delivers 2.5 Gbps. Provider provisioning and plan limits still apply. |
| ARRIS SURFboard G20 | DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and Wi-Fi 6 router combo. A retailer answer attributed to the ARRIS SURFboard Team describes cable use and router-only use behind fiber or Ethernet, with a 1 Gbps Ethernet ceiling. | Normal cable service, or a model-specific router-only setup behind an Ethernet handoff when 1 Gbps is sufficient. | It is not a fiber modem or ONT replacement. The fiber statement comes from retailer Q&A rather than a technical data sheet. |
| ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 | Cable modem-only product. A retailer Q&A answer says a separate Wi-Fi router is required. | Only if you intentionally want a separate modem and router architecture. | Do not treat it as an all-in-one combo. |
| ARRIS SURFboard SBG7600 | Older retailer Q&A describes DOCSIS 3.0 and an AC2350 Wi-Fi router, and advises checking provider and tier. | Historical or older-stock option to investigate only after confirming current status. | Verify current availability, firmware support, and ISP approval before considering it. |
Why the G34 is the sensible default for many cable plans
The G34 has the clearest fit for a conventional cable customer whose plan falls within the listing’s stated ceiling. Its published description combines a DOCSIS 3.1 modem with a Wi-Fi 6 router and identifies Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity, and other cable providers. Best Buy’s listing presents it as suitable for cable plans up to 1 Gbps.

That makes the G34 a practical starting point, not a universal recommendation. “Up to 1 Gbps” describes the plan tier the listing targets; it does not promise that every home will measure 1 Gbps over Wi-Fi. Results depend on the ISP’s provisioning, the wired service delivered to the modem, client hardware, interference, building layout, and simultaneous use. No independent controlled throughput or range result is established for this model here.
When the G34 is a poor fit
- Your service is fiber, DSL, or fixed wireless and the provider does not hand off service as an approved Ethernet connection.
- Your cable provider does not list the exact G34 hardware revision for your plan.
- You need a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port for a multi-gig wired device or switch; the cited G34 description does not establish that capability.
- Your provider requires an equipment feature or firmware version not supported by the specific retail unit.
When the G36 makes more sense
The G36’s distinguishing published detail is a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port alongside a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem and Wi-Fi 6 router. That port can matter when a desktop, server, switch, or other wired device has a 2.5 Gbps interface, or when you want the local network’s wired link to avoid a 1 Gbps port ceiling.

- Strong Wi-Fi 6 Coverage: Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 delivers faster, wider wireless performance for your whole home.
- Service Compatibility: Works with major ISPs like Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox
- Save on Fees: Own your modem and avoid up to $168/year in rental charges (varies by provider)
Do not read the port number as a promise of 2.5 Gbps internet. The ISP must sell, provision, and support a service tier capable of that rate, and the modem must be approved for that tier. If the provider connection is limited to 1 Gbps, the G36’s extra port capacity may have no effect on internet speed, although it can still be relevant to a faster local network.
Questions to answer before choosing the G36
- Does the provider’s live device list show the exact G36 model, not merely the brand or a similar model?
- Is the intended plan approved for that modem and its DOCSIS generation?
- Does your wired equipment actually support more than 1 Gbps?
- Will the provider activate customer-owned equipment on the intended multi-gig tier?
Understanding the G20’s fiber answer
Retailer Q&A often produces confusing answers to questions such as “Will this work with quantum fiber?” and “Does it work with fiber optic internet providers?” The G20 illustrates why the wording matters.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An answer attributed to the ARRIS SURFboard Team states: “The SURFboard G20 is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem combined with a Wi-Fi 6 router, specifically designed for use with cable internet providers such as Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Spectrum.” That is a cable-service description. A separate answer says the G20 can be used as a router for fiber or Ethernet service, with a 1 Gbps Ethernet limit.
In practice, a fiber installation would need the provider’s ONT or gateway to present an Ethernet handoff. You would then connect that Ethernet feed to the G20 in the router role, following the provider’s requirements for authentication, VLANs, bridge mode, or gateway settings. The available evidence does not establish that every fiber provider supports this arrangement, so obtain confirmation from the provider before buying.
Do not confuse a combo with the SB8200 modem-only design
The SB8200 belongs in a different category. A retailer answer identifies it as a cable modem-only product and says a separate Wi-Fi router is needed. That arrangement can be useful if you want to replace or upgrade the router independently, use a mesh system, or keep modem and routing responsibilities separate.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose the right model, step by step
- Identify the service handoff. Look at where the provider connection enters the home. A coaxial cable points to cable DOCSIS service; an optical cable and ONT point to fiber; an Ethernet cable from a provider gateway may support router-only use. Do not buy a cable modem to terminate a fiber line.
- Write down the exact plan tier. Record the advertised download and upload rates, whether the plan is multi-gig, and whether the provider supplies an ONT or gateway. The product listing’s “up to 1 Gbps” or 2.5 Gbps port language cannot substitute for the plan’s actual terms.
- Check the live approved-device list. Search the provider’s equipment page for the exact model number and the intended speed tier. Retailer references to major providers are useful leads, but they do not establish universal approval for every plan or geographic market.
- Choose the hardware class. Select the G34 when the approved cable plan is within the listed 1 Gbps positioning and no faster wired port is required. Consider the G36 when its 2.5 Gbps port addresses a real wired-network need. Consider the G20 only for ordinary approved cable use or a provider-confirmed router-only Ethernet setup.
- Decide between an all-in-one and separate devices. Choose a combo for simpler hardware. Choose a modem-only product such as the SB8200 only when you specifically want a separate router or mesh system.
- Confirm the return and revision details. Retail inventory, hardware revisions, and approval status can change. Keep the model number and serial information until activation succeeds, and make sure the seller’s return window covers an ISP-compatibility problem.
Activation and installation workflow
The exact screens differ by provider, but the physical sequence is consistent for an approved cable combo.
- Disconnect the old modem or gateway and attach the coaxial cable to the combo’s cable connector. Tighten it firmly by hand; avoid forcing the connector.
- Connect the power adapter and wait for the modem’s startup sequence. Initial registration can take several minutes.
- Connect a computer to an Ethernet port for the first setup when possible. A wired connection avoids confusing an activation problem with a Wi-Fi configuration problem.
- Open the provider’s activation page or contact support. Supply the model number, MAC address, and any other identifier printed on the device label.
- Allow the provider to provision the modem for the exact plan. Do not assume that an online status light means the account has been assigned the intended speed tier.
- Set a unique Wi-Fi network name and a strong password. Change any default administrator password shown in the setup interface.
- Reconnect clients one at a time and test a wired device first. Then test Wi-Fi from the room where you normally work or stream.
For a G20 router-only installation behind fiber or another Ethernet handoff, follow the provider’s instructions for the ONT or gateway first. Some providers require their gateway to remain in bridge mode or require settings that are not established by the available G20 answer. If the provider cannot confirm compatibility, keep its supplied router or use a router explicitly supported by that service.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
DOCSIS 3.1
DOCSIS 3.1 identifies the cable-modem generation used by the G34, G36, and G20 descriptions. It is a compatibility and capability marker, not an independent speed test. Actual service depends on the provider’s network, plan, provisioning, and local conditions.
Wi-Fi 6
Wi-Fi 6 identifies the wireless generation in the cited combo descriptions. It does not guarantee coverage in a particular house, a specific speed in every room, or performance with older client devices. Wall materials, distance, neighboring networks, device capabilities, and simultaneous traffic all affect results. The available product descriptions do not provide controlled range or throughput testing.

Ethernet port speed
The G36’s cited 2.5 Gbps port is a physical interface capability. The G20’s router-only fiber/Ethernet answer states a 1 Gbps ceiling. A port rating is not the same as internet service speed, and a fast port cannot overcome an ISP plan, cable signal, switch, or client that is limited to a lower rate.

Buying for fiber because the listing says “router”
Symptom: You have an ONT or optical terminal, but the new device expects coaxial service. Fix: Keep the ONT in the connection, ask the provider whether customer-owned routing is allowed, and confirm the exact Ethernet settings. The G20’s model-specific answer supports only a router role with a 1 Gbps Ethernet ceiling.
Assuming a retailer’s provider list is universal
Symptom: The modem appears on a product page, but activation fails or the provider offers only a lower tier. Fix: Check the provider’s current approved-device list before purchase, including the exact plan tier and hardware revision. Ask support to confirm customer-owned equipment eligibility.
Expecting a 2.5 Gbps port to create multi-gig internet
Symptom: A G36 is installed on a 1 Gbps plan and tests never exceed that service rate. Fix: Treat the port as local-network headroom. Upgrade the ISP plan only if it is available, approved for the modem, and supported by your wired equipment.

Diagnosing Wi-Fi before confirming activation
Symptom: Devices connect to the network name but have no internet access. Fix: Test an Ethernet-connected computer, verify the modem is provisioned, and then troubleshoot wireless placement or client settings.
A practical purchase checklist
- Service type is confirmed as cable, fiber with an Ethernet handoff, or another supported arrangement.
- Exact model number appears on the ISP’s current approved-device list.
- Approval covers the intended plan tier, not merely the provider name.
- G34’s listed up-to-1-Gbps positioning matches the plan, or G36’s 2.5 Gbps port addresses a real wired requirement.
- You understand whether the unit will operate as a cable modem-router combo or, in the G20’s model-specific case, as a router behind another handoff.
- You are not substituting a modem-only SB8200 for an all-in-one device without budgeting for a separate router.
- You have a return option in case activation, revision, or plan approval does not match the listing.
Bottom line for each buyer
Choose the G34 when you have approved U.S. cable service and a plan listed at up to 1 Gbps, and you want one DOCSIS 3.1 modem plus Wi-Fi 6 router. It is the clearest mainstream starting point in the cited product information.
Choose the G36 when your approved cable setup can make practical use of a 2.5 Gbps wired Ethernet port. Its port is the differentiator; it is not a guarantee of multi-gig internet.
Consider the G20 for approved cable service, or for a provider-confirmed router-only Ethernet installation behind an ONT or gateway where the 1 Gbps ceiling is acceptable.
Choose the SB8200 only deliberately when you want a modem-only arrangement and already plan to supply a separate router. Treat the SBG7600 as an older option requiring especially careful verification of current support and approval.
