Choose a web panel such as TCAdmin when browser-based administration, scheduled SteamCMD jobs and several game services matter more than a lightweight command-line workflow.

What an Arma 3 server manager actually does
An Arma 3 manager does not replace the game server. Bohemia Interactive supplies the Linux executable and the configuration model; a manager organizes the surrounding work. It can create a service account, download files with SteamCMD, retain startup parameters, expose logs and console access, automate updates and help you operate more than one instance.
The practical choice is therefore an operating model, not a universal performance ranking. LinuxGSM is a command-line tool for quick, simple deployment and management of Linux dedicated game servers. A panel adds a web interface and centralized scheduling. Running the official files manually gives maximum control but leaves every routine task to your own scripts and procedures.

Why LinuxGSM is the strongest default on Linux
LinuxGSM’s Arma 3 target packages the repetitive parts of a dedicated-server deployment without hiding the game’s native files. Its current default configuration identifies Arma 3 with server application ID 233780 and uses port 2302 as the default game port. You can inspect and change those values for your network design instead of treating them as universal requirements.

Deploying an Arma 3 instance with LinuxGSM
- Prepare a supported Linux host. Allocate sufficient storage for the base server, Workshop content, logs and backups. Open only the game and query ports you intend to use. Apply operating-system security updates before installing game software.
- Create a dedicated service account. Follow Bohemia Interactive’s requirement to run the server under the
steamuser, not root or another administrator. Give that account ownership of the server files and no unnecessary sudo privileges. - Install the LinuxGSM Arma 3 target. Use LinuxGSM’s current installer procedure to create the Arma 3 instance, then run its
installaction. SteamCMD downloads the files associated with app ID 233780. - Set the instance configuration. Define the public address, game port, query behavior, profile location, startup parameters and any required passwords in the generated LinuxGSM configuration and Arma 3 configuration files. Keep secrets out of shell history and public repositories.
- Write and validate
server.cfg. Set the hostname, player limits, mission cycle, voting and administrative rules required by your community. Use the profile directory selected for this instance so that logs and persistent data are not shared accidentally with another server. - Start and inspect. Run the start action, review the log output, and use the details and console actions to confirm that the executable is listening on the expected port. Test a local connection before advertising the server externally.
- Document maintenance. Record the update command, restart window, backup locations and rollback plan. Schedule updates during a period when players expect a short interruption, and test a copy of the configuration after major mod changes.
The official Bohemia baseline you still need to understand
LinuxGSM wraps, rather than replaces, the official server. Bohemia Interactive’s documentation states that a Linux executable is provided to launch the server. The same documentation defines the relationship among the executable, startup parameters, server.cfg and the profile location. If a manager appears to behave unexpectedly, troubleshoot these native components first.
Executable and startup parameters
Startup parameters select the network port, configuration file, profile directory, logging behavior, CPU or memory options and optional client roles. Keep a written record of the final command line. A panel or script can make parameters less visible, so always inspect the generated launch information when diagnosing a startup failure.
server.cfg and profile data
server.cfg controls server identity, player and mission rules, voting and administrator behavior. Profile files hold persistent data and logs. Each instance needs a distinct profile location; otherwise two servers can overwrite logs, bans or other state while appearing to run normally.
Account permissions
Run the service as the dedicated steam user. Running an Arma server as root makes a compromised mod, script or server process far more damaging and can create ownership problems that later prevent SteamCMD or a manager from writing updates.

Managing Arma 3 mods without breaking the server
LinuxGSM documents two broad approaches: obtain Workshop content through SteamCMD or download a mod manually and place it in the server’s mod directory. The choice affects repeatability. Workshop content is easier to refresh from its source; manual packages may be necessary for private distributions or files not delivered through Workshop.
Use a controlled mod workflow
- Maintain a written list of mod names, identifiers, versions and dependencies.
- Download or update content while the server is stopped, then verify that the expected directory and signature files exist.
- Copy required key files into the server’s keys directory so clients can pass signature checks.
- Load client and server mod parameters in a deliberate order; keep optional client-only content separate from server-required content.
- Test a changed collection on a staging instance or at an announced maintenance time.
- Retain the previous working collection until players have connected successfully.
LinuxGSM warns that Arma 3 mods may be unstable or incompatible. A manager can automate file retrieval, but it cannot resolve conflicting scripts, mismatched client versions or a mod that breaks a mission. When a failure follows a mod update, remove or roll back the newest change first, then inspect the server log and the mod author’s compatibility notes.
Adding a headless client
A headless client is a separate Arma process that connects to the main server and can offload AI calculations. LinuxGSM documents operating it as a separate instance. Treat it as another service, not as a launch flag added casually to the primary server.

- Create a second LinuxGSM instance with its own files, profile directory, logs and service identity.
- Assign non-conflicting network settings and ensure the host firewall allows the headless client to reach the main server.
- Apply the headless-client startup parameters and account settings required by the Arma server configuration.
- Update
server.cfgand related profile settings so the server accepts the headless client and gives it the intended role. - Start the main server first, then start the headless instance and confirm the connection in the server console and logs.
- Stop the headless process during troubleshooting to determine whether a mission or script depends on it.
The benefit depends on the mission and AI workload. The available documentation establishes the operating pattern, not a universal number of additional players or a guaranteed frame-rate improvement.

When a web panel such as TCAdmin is worth the overhead
A web panel is a good fit for a host shared by several administrators or several game services. TCAdmin documents SteamCMD configuration, Steam Guard handling, a “Steam Update” action for a selected game server and scheduled tasks. That combination can turn routine updates into an operator-approved calendar job instead of a shell session.
Choose a panel when these needs dominate
- Non-technical staff need start, stop, restart and log access from a browser.
- You operate multiple services and want one account, role and audit system.
- Updates, restarts and backups must run on a schedule.
- You prefer provider-style resource quotas and per-instance separation.
Check these items before purchase or migration
- Confirm that the current panel release includes an Arma 3 template rather than assuming generic SteamCMD support is sufficient.
- Verify that the template exposes custom startup parameters, profile paths, Workshop or manual mod directories and headless-client processes.
- Review how Steam Guard credentials and tokens are stored, who can trigger updates and how actions are logged.
- Confirm licensing terms and whether the cost is recurring, per machine or bundled by your host.
- Test a complete restore: game files,
server.cfg, profile data, mods, keys and scheduled tasks.
A panel does not eliminate Arma troubleshooting. If its form hides a malformed parameter or points two services at one profile directory, use the panel’s generated command and file paths to diagnose the underlying server.
Security and reliability checklist
- Run the dedicated service as
steamor another unprivileged account; never use root for normal operation. - Restrict SSH and panel access by firewall, keys, strong authentication and least-privilege roles.
- Open only the required game and query ports; the LinuxGSM default game port is 2302, but your final port may differ.
- Back up
server.cfg, profile data, mission files, mod manifests and key files together. - Keep a known-good mod collection and configuration so a failed update can be reversed.
- Monitor disk space: Workshop downloads, logs and crash dumps can consume more storage than the base executable.
- Review logs after every update and restart rather than assuming a successful command means a successful connection.
- Separate production and test instances so experimental mods cannot overwrite live data.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The service will not start
Check ownership of the installation and profile directories, then inspect the generated startup parameters and the first error in the server log. A root-owned file created during an earlier manual test commonly prevents the service account from writing later.
Players cannot connect
Confirm that the process is listening on the configured port, the host firewall and upstream firewall allow it, and the advertised address matches the machine that actually runs the instance. Verify that clients have the same required mods and keys.
An update removed or changed content
Compare the mod manifest and SteamCMD output with the previous backup. Stop the server, restore the known-good files if necessary, and defer the update until the collection has been tested. Do not delete the only working copy while investigating.
The headless client repeatedly disconnects
Check that it uses its own profile and ports, that the server configuration permits its account, and that the main server is already ready when the headless process starts. Run it without the mission or mod suspected of causing the disconnect to isolate the failure.

Choose LinuxGSM if

Several people need browser access, scheduled SteamCMD work is central to your operation, or you administer many unrelated game services. Confirm Arma-specific templates and licensing before committing.
Choose manual operation if
You are building your own automation, need complete control over process supervision, or must integrate the server with an existing deployment system. Accept that every update, backup, permission fix and recovery path becomes your responsibility.
For a new self-managed Linux server, start with LinuxGSM, keep Bohemia’s native configuration model visible, and add a separate headless instance only when your mission workload justifies it. Move to a panel when people and schedules—not missing Arma functionality—become the limiting factor.
