As of October 15, 2026, Altis Life Roleplay, Grand Theft ArmA, USA LIFE and LiveYourLife are useful communities to investigate, but their status, player counts and requirements can change. This guide explains how to evaluate them, join safely and build a dedicated RP server of your own.
What makes an Arma 3 RP server worth joining?
Roleplay servers turn Arma 3 from a conventional military sandbox into a persistent social game. Missions commonly give players civilian, police, medic, gang, trader or business roles, then use rules and scripted systems to create an economy and consequences for in-game actions. A server that looks busy on a listing can still be a poor fit if its rules, language, mod pack or application process do not suit you.

Use these questions before committing time to a community:
- Is it active now? Check the operator’s live status, Discord announcements and recent changelog. An old server list is not proof that a server still has players.
- What kind of roleplay is expected? Some communities emphasize civilian businesses and progression; others center on police and emergency-services careers, gangs, serious character rules or a more relaxed style.
- How much access friction is there? Record whether you need a whitelist application, age verification, Discord or TeamSpeak, faction applications, or a particular Workshop collection.
- Will your computer and connection cope? Check the map, mod-pack size, required downloadable content, BattlEye policy, region, ping and restart schedule.
- How is the community managed? Read current rules, appeals and ban procedures. Look for staff support, maintenance notices and changelogs rather than treating marketing claims as an objective quality score.
Bohemia Interactive’s FAQ says typical Arma 3 scenarios cater for 2 to 64 players, but that is a general scenario range, not a promise that every RP server will perform well at 64 slots. Hardware, bandwidth, mission scripts, configuration and the number of available mission slots determine the practical ceiling.

Altis Life Roleplay
The community says it was established in 2018 and relaunched in 2026. Its site lists an online Altis server, a displayed 100-player capacity, a connection endpoint, TeamSpeak, Discord, rules and applications. The published game guide describes civilians gathering goods and running businesses, an Altis Police Department, medics, armed groups, contraband facilities and a free-market economy.
Those details make it a natural candidate if you want a structured Altis Life loop with civilian and faction careers. Treat the online indicator and player count as volatile: check them just before connecting, and confirm whether the application or faction process has changed since you last read the guide.

Grand Theft ArmA
Grand Theft ArmA describes a persistent, community-built roleplay world inside Arma 3. Its operator reports more than 379,000 players across eight years. That number is the operator’s own historical reach claim, not an independently audited measure of current activity or quality.
Investigate the current server status, rules, required Workshop content and onboarding instructions. A long operating history can indicate an established community, but it does not tell you how busy a particular session will be or whether the present rules match your preferred style.

USA LIFE presents itself as an Altis Life RPG server with a roleplay-first position. The operator says its history began in 2014 and uses Discord for announcements and support. Its site also presents experience and code-line figures; use those as the operator’s descriptions rather than independent quality measurements.
Before joining, look for the current Discord notices, restart schedule, application requirements, mod collection and any age or conduct rules. The most useful test is whether the server’s definition of serious roleplay fits the time and behavior it expects from you.

LiveYourLife presents itself as a German Arma 3 Altis Life server operating for more than ten years. It provides a community site with status information, guides and rules. For English-speaking players, language and region are the main comparison points: read the rules in the language used by staff, check likely ping and see when peak sessions occur.
A long-running community can still change its framework or mod pack. Confirm the current version, Workshop collection, Discord requirements and restart times rather than relying on a historical description.
How to compare servers without relying on an old ranking
Make a small checklist for every candidate and fill it from the operator’s current pages and announcements:

How to join an Arma 3 roleplay server
- Install Arma 3. Make sure the game is fully updated and that you can launch the current branch required by the community.
- Open the in-game browser. From the main menu choose Multiplayer, then use the server browser and its filters. Bohemia specifically recommends the in-game browser for finding servers and BattlEye-protected options.
- Find the exact server. Search the operator’s precise server name. If the community publishes an IP address and port, use those values rather than guessing a similarly named result.
- Install required content. Subscribe to the operator’s Workshop collection or install the specified add-ons. Keep the game branch and mod versions aligned with the server.
- Complete onboarding. Read the current rules and finish any whitelist, Discord, TeamSpeak, faction or character application before expecting access to restricted roles.
- Recheck before troubleshooting. Look at the status page and latest announcements for maintenance, scheduled restarts or a mod update. A server restarting at the moment you connect can look like a failed installation.
Fixing common connection problems
The server does not appear
Refresh the browser, remove overly narrow filters and search the exact name. If the operator provides a direct endpoint, try that. Confirm that the server is actually online, that a restart is not in progress and that BattlEye filtering has not hidden it.

Version or missing-mod errors
Bohemia lists mismatched versions and missing user-generated add-ons among common connection causes. Update Arma 3, switch to the branch specified by the community, synchronize the complete Workshop collection and remove obsolete duplicate copies. Do not mix an old local mod folder with a newly published collection unless the operator tells you to.
Firewall or network failure
Bohemia also warns that firewalls and other obstacles between you and the server can prevent a connection. Allow Arma 3 and BattlEye through the operating system firewall, restart the game after changing rules and test another network if possible. A server can be healthy while your router, school or workplace network blocks the required traffic.
You can connect but are kicked or cannot choose a role
Read the current whitelist and age rules. Some communities allow anyone to enter the lobby but restrict police, medic or faction slots until an application is approved. A kick after loading can also mean that a required mod, DLC or character file is missing; check the operator’s onboarding instructions rather than repeatedly reconnecting.
Severe lag or desync
High ping is different from a low server frame rate. Check your region and other network use first, then look for maintenance notices or a known heavy mission. If several players report the same delay, send staff the time, location and symptoms; do not assume a client utility can repair a server-side simulation bottleneck.

Requirements for your own Arma 3 dedicated RP server
Bohemia’s dedicated-server guide lists these published baselines:

These are documented baseline figures, not a performance guarantee for a heavily scripted or modded RP mission. The guide states that Arma 3 hosting does not support IPv6 or DS-Lite IPv4 delivered through an IPv6 tunnel. If your provider uses carrier-grade NAT or gives you no real IPv4 address, inbound players may not be able to reach the server; obtain a public IPv4 service or use a hosting arrangement that supplies one.

Install and launch the dedicated server
- Choose the platform. Use the supported Windows Server or modern Linux option, apply security updates and create a separate service account where practical.
- Install the server files. Use SteamCMD or the dedicated-server package. Keep server files, configuration, logs and downloaded mods organized separately from your personal game client.
- Track the server version. Bohemia’s release notes identify stand-alone Windows and Linux dedicated-server version 2.20 in the cited release record. Check the live release channel before deployment because version numbers change.
- Create a configuration file. Set a visible hostname, administrative protection, an optional player password, a player limit and persistence. Keep administrative credentials out of files that ordinary staff can download.
- Launch with explicit parameters. The startup reference documents the
-serverand-port=<number>parameters. A generic launch shape is<dedicated-server-executable> -server -port=<number> -config=server.cfg; use the executable name and paths appropriate to your platform. - Test locally, then externally. Join from the host first to catch mission and configuration errors. Test from a different network before announcing the address publicly, because local success does not prove that NAT and firewall rules are correct.
Configure hostname, slots and persistence
A minimal configuration should communicate what players are joining while protecting administration. The exact syntax depends on the current server reference, but the documented fields include:

The official configuration reference notes that mission slots can impose a lower ceiling than maxPlayers; setting a high number cannot create additional playable positions in a mission that defines fewer.

Port forwarding and firewall setup
- Give the server host a stable local address so forwarding rules do not follow a changing DHCP lease.
- In the router, forward the selected game port and the Steam ports required by the dedicated-server documentation to that host. Use the same game port in the launch parameter and in the address you publish.
- Allow the dedicated-server executable through the operating-system firewall for the required protocols and port range.
- Check that your ISP supplies real IPv4 connectivity. IPv6-only service and DS-Lite IPv4 through an IPv6 tunnel are not supported by the documented Arma 3 hosting requirements.
- Test from outside your home network. Some routers cannot hairpin a public address back into the LAN, so a test performed only from the host can give a false result.
Do not publish administrative ports or passwords. Give players only the game endpoint and the onboarding information they need.
Build the roleplay operation, not just the machine
A reachable process is not yet a functioning RP community. Before opening publicly, decide which mission or framework will run, publish one exact mod collection and write rules that explain character behavior, escalation, combat limits, exploiting, harassment, evidence and appeals. Keep these community rules separate from Bohemia’s technical defaults so players know which policy applies to a dispute.
Define roles and progression
Document how civilians earn money, how businesses and traders work, and how police, EMS and gangs are recruited. State which roles require applications, what training is required and how staff resolve conflicts between factions. A simple, readable progression system is easier to moderate than a large collection of undocumented scripts.

Provide one join page with the server name, address, game version, mod collection, DLC requirements, rules, restart schedule and a support channel such as Discord. Explain what a new player should do during the first session and where to report a broken mission or missing mod.
Operate the server continuously
Schedule restarts, monitor logs, watch server frame time and desync reports, keep backups of configuration and persistence data, and announce mod or mission updates before applying them. Record bans and appeals consistently so moderation does not depend on which administrator happens to be online.
Capacity and performance planning
Bohemia says there is no technical hard limit on player count, while noting that reasonable numbers depend on hardware and available bandwidth. Its typical-scenario guidance of 2–64 players is a useful starting range, not a target for every mission. Begin with a conservative slot count, profile the actual mission under its full mod load and increase capacity only after observing server frame time, network behavior and the support workload created by a larger population.
Mission slots, AI, persistent economy scripts, police and medic systems, logging and mod traffic all consume resources. A server that technically accepts more connections can still deliver poor roleplay if simulation stalls, desync becomes frequent or staff cannot handle reports. Capacity is therefore an operational decision as much as a hardware specification.
