It combines accessible arcade handling, connected environments, free roaming and large online races, although its cast of Nintendo characters and karts is very different from Hot Wheels’ toy-car collection. Choose Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if changing courses and vehicle customization matter most, or Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged if you want the closest existing Hot Wheels experience and deeper track-focused racing.
The right choice depends on what “like” means to you: toy cars, exploration, track building, local split-screen, online competition or a Switch 2-native release. This guide separates those priorities and explains the important edition and compatibility differences.

What Hot Wheels Infinite Rush offers on Switch 2
Hot Wheels Infinite Rush moves the series beyond a sequence of closed circuits. Milestone describes a Hot Wheels-sized world made up of four explorable islands, with races, activities, secrets and free-roaming challenges. Nintendo’s product listing also highlights the islands, Rush Masters, four vehicle classes, Track Builder and a garage of more than 150 vehicles.
The game supports classic events as well as asynchronous and synchronous challenges. Its Track Builder lets you create routes that use the surrounding environment rather than treating the track as a detached menu screen. Cross-play is advertised, and split-screen supports up to four players. Milestone says Nintendo Switch 2 races have six competitors, while Nintendo’s storefront separately lists online play for 2–12 players. Those figures describe different layers of the online experience: six is the stated race field, whereas 12 is the aggregate online-player range shown by the store listing.

The US Nintendo listing gives a September 10, 2026 release date, a 12.7 GB download and TV, tabletop and handheld support. It lists one to four players on one system and two to 12 online, and identifies the Switch 2 release as a digital edition. Nintendo UK also lists September 10, 2026, and says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. Storefront details, prices, age ratings and network requirements can vary by region, so check your local listing before buying.
Nintendo lists a Deluxe Edition containing the full game and the Vehicle Pass. Nintendo says all Vehicle Pass content is scheduled to be available by October 2027. Do not assume that every planned vehicle or future pack is included with the standard edition: the base listing currently displays planned downloadable-content entries, while the Deluxe description is the one that explicitly includes the pass.
These are advertised specifications from Milestone and Nintendo, not independent tests of frame rate, loading times or image quality. No Switch 2-specific hands-on performance test is established for this comparison.

At-a-glance alternatives
| Game | Best for | Why it fits | Important difference | Switch 2 status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart World | Broadest arcade-racing match | Connected courses, free roaming, approachable racing and up to 24 online racers | Character-driven karts rather than a toy-car collection | Dedicated Switch 2 edition; physical edition listed by Nintendo |
| Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds | Course variety and customization | Travel Rings move races to other dimensions; 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets | Its identity is Sonic characters and gadget builds, not Hot Wheels vehicles | Switch 2 compatibility and a dedicated Switch 2 edition or upgrade path are listed; confirm requirements for an existing copy |
| Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged | More Hot Wheels racing right now | More than 130 vehicles, vehicle upgrades, track creation and varied modes | Structured track racing rather than Infinite Rush’s four-island exploration | Nintendo Switch game marked “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch,” not a Switch 2-native release |
1. Mario Kart World: the best all-purpose pick
Mario Kart World is the safest recommendation when you want the lively, easy-to-start feel of an arcade racer but are not attached to the Hot Wheels brand. Nintendo describes an interconnected world in which routes pass through varied environments, alongside free-roaming play and conventional races. That combination makes it the closest match for someone attracted to Infinite Rush’s sense of moving through a larger world instead of selecting isolated circuits.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
Why it suits Infinite Rush players
- Exploration and racing share one space. Connected courses and free-roam activities provide a stronger sense of place than a simple race-select screen.
- Large online fields. Nintendo lists up to 24 online racers, the largest advertised online number among these recommendations.
- Easy local multiplayer. One-system play supports one to four players, matching the local group size that makes Infinite Rush attractive for families and parties.
- Immediate accessibility. The character-based presentation and familiar arcade handling are easier for mixed-skill groups than a simulation-oriented racer.
The trade-off is fundamental: you collect and race Nintendo characters in karts, not miniature branded cars. If building a garage of Hot Wheels models, choosing among vehicle classes or creating environmental tracks is the main appeal, Mario Kart World is a thematic alternative rather than a direct substitute.
Who should choose it
Choose Mario Kart World when your priority order is broad multiplayer support, free roaming, recognizable characters and a Switch 2-native package. It is especially suitable for households that want one game to cover solo play, local sessions and large online races. Nintendo lists an official physical Switch 2 edition, which may matter if you prefer a cartridge rather than a digital download.
2. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds: the customization and course-variety choice
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the strongest alternative when the excitement comes from courses changing during a race and from tuning a vehicle to suit your style. Nintendo describes Travel Rings that send racers into other dimensions, so a race can move between distinct environments instead of staying on one conventional circuit. The game lists 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets, giving customization a larger role than a simple cosmetic garage.
What makes its racing distinct
- Dimensional course changes. Travel Rings are the defining structural idea: the route can shift to another world during an event.
- Build variety. The advertised combination of 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets gives you many equipment choices before a race.
- Flexible play modes. Nintendo lists offline and online modes, with up to 12 online players.
- Switch 2 support. Nintendo identifies Switch 2 compatibility and a dedicated Switch 2 edition or upgrade path.
This is a better fit than Mario Kart World if your favorite Infinite Rush feature is experimentation: trying different cars, changing your setup and learning how unfamiliar track sections connect. It is less suitable if the collection itself must consist of Hot Wheels toys or if you specifically want a four-island free-roaming structure.

Edition questions to check
Nintendo’s listing distinguishes Switch 2 support from the original version and identifies an edition or upgrade path. If you already own a Switch copy, confirm whether your region requires a paid upgrade, which features are included and whether your save data transfers. The available information establishes the compatibility and edition options, but not a universal price or upgrade policy for every storefront.
3. Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged: the closest franchise match
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged is the obvious choice when the toy-car identity matters more than open exploration. Nintendo lists more than 130 vehicles, including Hot Wheels Originals and Monster Trucks, plus vehicle upgrades, track creation and several modes. Its content is built around Hot Wheels racing itself, so the cars, visual language and collection loop are closer to Infinite Rush than either Mario Kart World or Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
Where it differs from Infinite Rush
- Track-first structure. The emphasis is on designed circuits, events and created tracks rather than four islands filled with free-roaming activities and secrets.
- Smaller advertised garage. More than 130 vehicles is substantial, but below Infinite Rush’s advertised 150-plus vehicles.
- Older platform release. Nintendo lists it as a Nintendo Switch game and marks Switch 2 compatibility as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.”
That compatibility label means you should not describe it as a Switch 2-native version. It is an older Switch release that Nintendo says runs on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with the original platform. The listing does not establish Switch 2-specific performance improvements, so do not buy it expecting a new-generation mode.

Pick Unleashed 2 when your ideal evening is collecting recognizable Hot Wheels vehicles, upgrading them and mastering tracks you create or download. It is also the practical choice if you want a Hot Wheels game before Infinite Rush’s September 2026 launch. Choose Infinite Rush instead if four-island exploration, Rush Masters, asynchronous challenges and the newer Switch 2 presentation are more important than having the largest established track library.

“Not stated” means the cited product information does not provide that figure; it is not evidence that the mode is absent. Likewise, the table compares advertised features rather than independently measured performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by your priority
You want the broadest multiplayer package
Start with Mario Kart World. Its one-system support for up to four and Nintendo’s advertised 24-player online races cover the widest range of group sizes. Infinite Rush is the better thematic option if the group specifically wants Hot Wheels cars and environmental track building, but its listed online figures are smaller.
You want to explore rather than repeat circuits
Compare Infinite Rush and Mario Kart World first. Infinite Rush offers four islands, activities, secrets and Rush Masters; Mario Kart World offers connected routes and free roaming. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds provides a different kind of variety by transporting racers through Travel Rings, while Unleashed 2 remains the most track-focused choice.
You want to build and modify cars
Infinite Rush and Unleashed 2 are the strongest thematic matches. Infinite Rush advertises four vehicle classes, more than 150 vehicles and a Track Builder. Unleashed 2 offers more than 130 vehicles, upgrades and track creation. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the better non-Hot-Wheels option if gadgets and vehicle setups are more appealing than collecting physical-looking toy models.
Best Value
- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
You need a physical Switch 2 release
Nintendo explicitly lists a physical edition for Mario Kart World. The US Infinite Rush listing checked for this guide identifies a digital Switch 2 edition, so do not assume a cartridge exists. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has a Switch 2 edition or upgrade path listed, but confirm the exact package in your region. Unleashed 2 is a compatible Switch title, not a native Switch 2 release.
You are buying for children or mixed-skill players
Mario Kart World is the simplest general recommendation because its character presentation, local four-player support and broad course design are easy to understand. Infinite Rush may be better when the children specifically enjoy Hot Wheels and want to build tracks. Nintendo UK lists Infinite Rush as PEGI 3; age ratings and storefront requirements can differ by territory.
Online, local play and membership requirements
All online claims need to be read in context. Infinite Rush’s “six competitors” figure refers to the stated Nintendo Switch 2 race field, while Nintendo’s store page separately shows two to 12 online players. Mario Kart World’s headline figure is up to 24 online racers. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lists up to 12 online players. These numbers should not be treated as a like-for-like performance test or as proof that every mode uses the same lobby size.

The US and UK listings may differ in wording, price and edition details, so check the store attached to your account. A local split-screen session does not use the same online requirement, but it does require enough controllers for the selected number of players.
Infinite Rush supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes and lists one to four players on one system. Those details make it the most directly documented choice here for a four-person local session on one console. The cited Sonic and Unleashed 2 descriptions do not establish a local-player number, so verify the current mode list if local multiplayer is your deciding factor.
Buying checklist for Switch 2 owners
- Choose the structure first. Select Infinite Rush or Mario Kart World for exploration, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for dimensional course changes, or Unleashed 2 for established Hot Wheels track racing.
- Check the platform label. Look for a dedicated Switch 2 edition when you want a native release. Treat “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” as compatibility for an older Switch game, not a Switch 2 upgrade.
- Verify the edition. For Infinite Rush, compare the standard listing with the Deluxe Edition before assuming the Vehicle Pass or future DLC is included.
- Confirm local and online numbers. Check whether the number refers to players on one console, racers in a single event or the total online range.
- Check regional requirements. Confirm the local price, download size, Nintendo Switch Online requirement, language and age rating immediately before purchase.
- Plan storage. The US Infinite Rush listing specifies a 12.7 GB download. Leave at least that much available, plus room for updates, before starting a digital installation.
Which game should you buy?
Buy Mario Kart World if you want one polished arcade racer that handles free roaming, local groups and very large online races better than any other option listed here. Buy Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds if changing dimensions, gadgets and vehicle customization are the features you will use most. Buy Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged if the Hot Wheels collection and track-building loop matter more than having a Switch 2-native release. Buy Hot Wheels Infinite Rush itself if you want the fullest combination of four-island exploration, Hot Wheels collecting, environmental track creation and documented four-player split-screen on Switch 2.
