For a phone-first livestream, Switcher Studio is the clearest documented fit: one iPhone, iPad, or Mac runs the production, while additional iPhones, iPads, and Android phones provide remote camera angles over the same wireless network. For a computer-based production, OBS Studio is the more configurable choice. It can receive phone video through webcam apps, USB, Wi-Fi, NDI, or a VDO.Ninja browser source, but you assemble and manage those sources yourself.

The right choice depends on the device you want to operate, the phones you already own, how they can connect, and how much setup you are willing to manage. Neither set of official sources provides a controlled comparison of latency, image quality, or reliability, so rehearse with the exact phones, computer, network, and venue before going live.

Switcher Studio: the simplest phone-led workflow

Switcher Studio puts switching on an Apple device. Its production app runs on a Mac, iPad, or iPhone, and the remote-camera workflow lets other phones feed angles into that production. Switcher’s remote-camera instructions require the devices to be on the same wireless network. The operator enters a livestream studio on the main device, then uses the remote phone’s Share Camera workflow to make it available as a source. Once connected, the producer can select a camera in the production panel to switch the live output.

Switcher’s camera setup guide says a production can connect up to nine devices. Its FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026, describes up to nine camera angles at once and lists iPhones, iPads, Android phones, NDI and HDMI cameras, Mac webcams, and screen shares as possible source types. Android phones act as wireless camera sources through the free companion app, but an Apple device still has to run the production hub.

The remote-camera article was listed as updated June 22, 2026. Follow the current instructions in the Switcher remote-camera guide, because app screens and operating-system support can change.

Switcher setup, step by step

  1. Choose the production device. Select the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that will run the production and switching interface. Keep this device available to the operator rather than mounting it at a remote camera position.
  2. Put every device on one wireless network. Connect the production hub and each camera phone to the same network before opening the production. A phone on cellular data or an isolated guest network may not be discoverable by the hub.
  3. Install Switcher on the participating devices. The setup guide instructs you to install the app on the main device and the camera devices. Android phones use the companion camera app described in Switcher’s FAQ.
  4. Open the livestream studio on the hub. Start or enter the production on the Apple device that will control the show.
  5. Share each remote camera. On a remote phone, choose Share Camera. The phone should present a preview so you can frame the shot before assigning it to the production.
  6. Add and label the sources. Connect the available remote sources in the production panel and give each one a useful name, such as “wide,” “host,” or “demo desk.” Consistent names reduce mistakes when several phones look similar in the source list.
  7. Position and preview. Use the remote preview to set the angle, orientation, and subject placement. Lock the phone in a stable position once the framing is correct; a tripod mount is an optional practical accessory, not a documented requirement.
  8. Switch during the show. Tap the desired camera source in the production interface. Repeat the preview and switching check for every angle before starting the public stream.

If a remote iPhone does not appear

The camera setup guide describes manually connecting a remote iOS device by URL when automatic discovery fails. Keep both devices on the same network, open the camera-sharing workflow on the remote iPhone, and enter the displayed URL in the production workflow as instructed by the guide. If the URL still cannot be reached, check that the phones are not separated by client isolation on a public or guest Wi-Fi network.

When Switcher is the better choice

  • You want one mobile control surface rather than a computer scene-building workflow.
  • You have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac available to act as the production hub.
  • Your camera phones can join one local wireless network.
  • You prefer a documented, unified path for adding and switching several angles.

The documentation explains how to connect sources and the maximum number of devices, but it does not guarantee a particular delay, stream bitrate, picture quality, or stable operation on every router and phone combination.

OBS Studio: the flexible computer-centered option

OBS Studio is a better starting point when a computer already runs the production or when you need to mix phones with other desktop sources. OBS does not impose one phone-camera system. Instead, its official smartphone camera guide lists several ways to expose a phone as a source, after which you add that source to an OBS scene and configure it like other video inputs.

The cited guide was published July 21, 2023. It is a useful map of connection types, not a guarantee that every listed app supports every current phone, operating-system release, OBS release, or multi-source arrangement. Verify the chosen app’s current instructions before an event.

Phone-source methods listed by OBS

Source method Phones and connection paths described in the OBS guide How it reaches OBS Practical consideration
Camo iOS and Android; USB or Wi-Fi Appears through the app’s webcam integration Useful when you want either a wired or wireless path; confirm current desktop support.
Continuity Camera iPhone and Mac sharing an iCloud account and Wi-Fi network Selected as a camera input on the Mac Requires the Apple-device and account conditions described by Apple’s ecosystem.
DroidCam iOS and Android; Wi-Fi or USB Installed as a webcam-style source Choose USB when you want to avoid adding another wireless video stream.
EpocCam iOS; USB, Wi-Fi, or NDI Webcam or NDI source, depending on configuration Offers several transport choices, each with its own setup and network demands.
NDI HX Camera Phone or tablet as an NDI source Added through an NDI-capable receiver or plugin in the OBS workflow Best suited to a producer already comfortable with NDI routing.
VDO.Ninja Phone camera through a web page Copy the supplied URL into an OBS Browser Source Convenient for browser-based contribution, but dependent on the network path and browser-source configuration.

These entries come from the OBS Smartphone Camera Guide. The guide does not state a universal maximum number of phones, so the workable count depends on the computer, selected source method, USB bandwidth, network capacity, and the scenes you build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OBS setup, step by step

  1. Install and open OBS on the production computer. Create a scene for the show or open the scene collection you intend to use.
  2. Pick one connection method per phone. Decide whether each phone will use USB, Wi-Fi, NDI, or a browser contribution. Mixing methods is possible, but it gives you more individual setup and troubleshooting points.
  3. Prepare the phone source. Install and open the selected camera app, or open the VDO.Ninja camera page. Grant camera and microphone permissions only if the workflow requires them, and keep the phone awake while testing.
  4. Add the source in OBS. For a webcam-style app, add a video-capture source and select the app’s camera device. For NDI, add the NDI source supported by your OBS installation. For VDO.Ninja, add a Browser Source and paste the URL supplied by the service.
  5. Repeat for each phone. Add each camera to the scene, then resize and crop it in the preview. Use descriptive source names so “Phone 1” does not become a guessing game during a live switch.
  6. Build switching scenes. Make separate scenes or source layouts for the wide shot, close-up, two-person view, and any screen share. Test transitions while all feeds are active.
  7. Check audio deliberately. Decide which device supplies the program audio and mute duplicate phone microphones where necessary. Several open microphones can create echo even when every video source works.
  8. Run a local rehearsal. Record or use a private stream test with all phones connected at once. Watch for dropped sources, delayed feeds, overheating, battery drain, and computer load before inviting an audience.

Choosing USB, Wi-Fi, NDI, or a browser source

USB

A USB path keeps a phone’s video off the local Wi-Fi network and can be useful when the venue’s wireless system is crowded or blocks device-to-device discovery. The trade-off is physical cable management, limited cable length, and the need for the computer and phone to recognize the selected webcam app. Use a cable run that does not pull the phone out of its mount, and verify that the phone continues charging if the production is long.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is convenient for untethered camera placement, but every additional wireless feed consumes network capacity. For Switcher’s documented workflow, the hub and remote phones must share the same wireless network. For OBS, Wi-Fi requirements vary by the app: the guide lists Wi-Fi as an option for several webcam apps, while VDO.Ninja uses a browser-based contribution. Confirm that the venue network allows local traffic between devices rather than assuming that an internet connection alone is enough.

NDI

NDI can fit an existing network-video workflow and is specifically listed in the OBS guide through NDI HX Camera and in Switcher’s documented source types. It adds routing and receiver configuration, so it is generally a better match for an operator who already understands NDI than for someone seeking the fewest setup steps.

Browser source with VDO.Ninja

VDO.Ninja supplies a URL that OBS can load as a Browser Source. This avoids installing a traditional webcam driver on the computer, but the browser source still depends on the phone’s network path and OBS’s browser rendering. Test the exact URL, permissions, framing, and audio behavior in the same scene you will use live.

Plan the phones before you plan the scenes

  • Assign jobs to cameras. Decide which phone is the wide safety shot, which is the presenter close-up, and which covers a demonstration or audience view. This makes switching intentional instead of reactive.
  • Match orientation. Set every phone to the orientation required by the stream and check that the receiving app does not rotate one source unexpectedly.
  • Stabilize the frame. Mount each phone securely and leave room for charging cables. A phone that slowly tilts or vibrates is a production problem even if its software connection is perfect.
  • Control interruptions. Enable a do-not-disturb mode that still allows the controls you need. Incoming calls, notifications, or a lock screen can interrupt a camera feed.
  • Manage power and heat. Multiple-camera sessions use batteries and can warm phones. Start with charged devices, provide safe power where possible, and test the temperature after a rehearsal of the expected show length.
  • Label physical devices. Put the same name on the phone case, mount, and software source. This prevents an operator from switching to “Phone 3” while physically adjusting “Phone 2.”
  • Keep a fallback angle. A fixed wide shot gives you something to show if a roaming phone disconnects. The official documentation does not promise automatic failover, so a fallback is an operational safeguard rather than an app feature.

Rehearse the complete system, not just each phone

Testing one camera at a time can hide the failure that appears when all sources are active. Rehearse with the production hub, every camera phone, the intended network, the final scene collection, and the stream destination. Check discovery, preview, switching, audio muting, recording, and recovery from a deliberate disconnect.

Record a short sample and inspect it for mismatched exposure, focus hunting, portrait-versus-landscape errors, audio echo, and visible delay between cameras. The cited Switcher and OBS documentation explains setup paths but does not report a fair head-to-head latency or image-quality measurement. Treat your rehearsal as the only reliable answer for your particular phones, router, computer, and venue.

What to measure during the rehearsal

  • How long each source takes to appear after the app starts.
  • Whether switching leaves a frozen frame or black gap.
  • Whether the computer remains responsive with all OBS sources active.
  • Whether the wireless network remains usable when every camera transmits together.
  • How much battery and heat accumulate over the planned run time.
  • Whether the program audio stays in sync with the selected video.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The phone is not listed as a source

For Switcher, first confirm that the hub and phone are on the same wireless network and that the remote device is in Share Camera mode. If an iOS device still does not appear, use the manual URL connection described in the Switcher camera setup guide. For OBS, confirm that the webcam app is open, its desktop receiver or driver is installed where required, and the correct camera device is selected in the source properties.

The source appears but the picture freezes

Reduce competing network traffic, move the phone and access point closer together, and test a wired USB path if the selected OBS app supports it. In Switcher, verify that every device remains on the same local network. A frozen image does not establish a universal app defect; it can result from the phone, router, computer load, or the chosen transport.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera is rotated or framed incorrectly

Set orientation before adding the source, then correct rotation and crop in the receiving production. Recheck the preview after the phone is mounted. A remote preview is useful for positioning, but it cannot prevent a mount from being physically moved later.

Viewers hear an echo

Mute all but the intended program microphone in the production. Phone camera apps may expose their own microphones even when you intend to use a dedicated mic. Make the audio choice part of the rehearsal rather than waiting for the live show to reveal duplicate paths.

The computer cannot handle all OBS feeds

Remove unnecessary preview layers, close unrelated applications, and test fewer sources to identify the point at which the system becomes unstable. The OBS guide does not specify a phone count or hardware requirement, so there is no documented number that can be guaranteed for every computer. Use the largest stable configuration demonstrated by your own rehearsal.

Which app should you choose?

Choose Switcher Studio when

You want the operator to switch from an Apple device, your cameras can share one wireless network, and you prefer a single interface that was designed around multiple camera sources. Its documentation explicitly covers remote Apple devices, Android companion cameras, source previewing, and a nine-device production limit. The Apple production hub requirement is the deciding constraint for an Android-heavy kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS Studio when

A computer is already the center of your production, you need to combine phone feeds with desktop scenes or other capture sources, or you want to choose among USB, Wi-Fi, NDI, and browser-based contribution methods. OBS gives you more routing freedom, but every phone-source app and receiver becomes part of your maintenance and troubleshooting workload.

Use a hybrid decision rule

Start with the production hub, not the phone brand. If the operator will work from an iPad or iPhone and the show is primarily camera switching, evaluate Switcher first. If the operator will work from a computer and already knows OBS scenes, evaluate the source methods in OBS first. Then select the transport that survives a full rehearsal in the actual venue. The documented features narrow the choice; your network and hardware test determine whether the chosen setup is ready for an audience.
