Best Apps for Tracking Your Reading List: A Practical Guide

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

There is no single best reading-list app for everyone. Choose by the job you need done: maintaining to-read and finished shelves, discovering books, analyzing your reading, joining clubs, or building a daily reading habit.

For a conventional tracker with a large social layer, start by evaluating Goodreads. For detailed statistics, moods, tags, and a documented migration path from Goodreads, examine The StoryGraph. Hardcover and Fable suit readers who want more social or club-oriented experiences, while Libby and Audible make more sense when borrowing library books or listening to audiobooks is the primary activity. Bookmory and Bookly are worth considering when session and habit tracking matter as much as the book catalog.

Start with the job you want the app to do

A reading list sounds simple until you decide what “tracking” means. Some readers only need three places to put a book: planned, in progress, and finished. Others want a searchable personal library, custom tags, reading goals, mood-based recommendations, statistics by year, friend activity, club discussions, or a timer for each reading session. Those are different product categories, even when the apps use similar shelf names.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • Cataloging: You need reliable to-read, currently reading, completed, and favorite collections.
  • Organization: You want shelves, lists, or tags that reflect projects such as “2026 priorities,” “short novels,” or “books to discuss.”
  • Discovery: You want recommendations based on mood, pace, genre, or a community’s reviews.
  • Reflection: You want graphs, totals, genre breakdowns, moods, or comparisons across periods.
  • Social reading: You want friends’ activity, discussions, or organized book clubs.
  • Habit building: You want reading sessions, streaks, timers, or other prompts in addition to a book database.
  • Borrowing or listening: You primarily need access to library loans or audiobooks rather than a standalone reading history.

Decide which of those is essential before comparing app names. A feature-rich social service can feel cumbersome if all you wanted was a private checklist, while a minimalist catalog may disappoint you if year-end statistics or club discussion are the reason you are switching.

Comparison of the main options

The table separates documented capabilities from areas that current comparison pages do not establish. “Verify” means the app’s current store listing or help pages should be checked for your device, region, and account type before you commit data to it.

Goodreads: the community-centered baseline

Goodreads appears in current comparisons as an established way to track books while participating in a broad community. That makes it a logical baseline for readers who want friends’ activity, reviews, and discussion alongside their own list. It is less useful to think of it as a universal winner than as a strong fit for a particular social workflow.

Choose this type of service when other people’s reviews and reading activity are part of how you decide what to read. Before moving a long-standing library, inspect the current shelf model, export options, and account settings in the app itself. The available comparisons do not establish a complete, current feature matrix or a guaranteed migration path for every custom shelf, so do not assume that an organization system built elsewhere will transfer perfectly.

Who should start here

  • Readers who want a mature community around their lists.
  • People who regularly use friend activity or reviews for discovery.
  • Readers who do not need a specialized session timer or mood-statistics workflow.

The StoryGraph: detailed personal tracking and migration support

The most specific feature documentation in the available material comes from The StoryGraph’s Google Play listing. It describes reading statuses, custom shelves, custom tags, and statistics comparisons across segments of a library. The same listing says that Goodreads currently-reading, read, to-read, and did-not-finish shelves can be imported, with custom shelves mapped to custom tags.

An editorial account from TechRadar adds a different kind of evidence: the writer highlights reading totals, genres, moods, and changes over time, and describes mood and pace details as a reason to switch. Treat those as the author’s assessment of the experience, not as a controlled comparison of recommendation quality.

Why its organization model matters

Statuses answer “where am I with this book?” Tags answer “why is this book in my library?” Keeping those concepts separate is useful. A book can be marked read while carrying tags such as “translation,” “book club,” and “historical setting.” Custom shelves that become tags during import can preserve more of your personal taxonomy than a simple three-shelf transfer.

Who should choose it

  • Readers who want statistics that can be compared across parts of their library.
  • People who sort by mood, pace, genre, or other descriptive qualities.
  • Anyone leaving Goodreads who wants a documented route for bringing over four standard reading statuses and custom-shelf organization.

Confirm current platform coverage and pricing before signing up. Google Play availability establishes an Android listing, not universal support on every operating system or device.

Hardcover: a social option to investigate

Hardcover is surfaced in current comparisons as a modern tracking and social service. That positioning makes it relevant if you want a newer community experience rather than a private spreadsheet-style catalog. However, the comparison material does not establish a complete list of its current shelves, recommendation behavior, statistics, platform coverage, export tools, or paid boundaries.

Evaluate it by performing a small trial before importing a large library. Create a few statuses, add one custom organizational label if the app offers it, inspect discovery screens, and locate any export command. This is not a claim that a particular feature exists; it is a way to avoid discovering a limitation after you have committed your data.

Fable: choose it when clubs are the center of reading

Fable appears in comparisons as a book-club and social-reading option. If your list is primarily a queue for group discussions, the club layer may matter more than advanced personal statistics. The available material does not establish a complete current feature list, so confirm how Fable handles private lists, finished-book history, club invitations, discussion archives, and device support in its current listing.

Questions to answer before joining a club workflow

  • Can a book be kept on a private to-read list without joining a discussion?
  • Can you distinguish a book you finished alone from one completed with a club?
  • Can you leave a club without losing your personal reading history?
  • Is the app available on every device you use for reading and planning?

Libby and Audible: services that overlap with tracking

Libby for library borrowing

Libby is worth considering when borrowing and reading library books is the primary activity. Its job is different from maintaining an independent, lifelong reading catalog: availability, loan periods, holds, and your library’s policies shape the experience. If you want a history that includes books you bought, borrowed elsewhere, or read years ago, pair a borrowing service with a separate tracker or confirm that the history tools meet that requirement.

Audible for audiobook-first use

Audible appears in comparisons as an audiobook-first option. It can be a sensible starting point when listening is how you consume most books, but the cited comparisons do not establish how well it works as a cross-format personal reading-list manager. Check whether its current library and wishlist tools cover print, ebook, and audiobook titles in the way you expect before treating it as your only tracker.

Bookmory and Bookly: for readers who track the act of reading

Bookmory and Bookly are listed among apps that emphasize sessions or habits alongside book tracking. That distinction matters if your goal is to read for a certain number of minutes, maintain a routine, or understand how individual sessions add up. It is unnecessary overhead if you only want a catalog of titles.

Use session tracking when you need behavior feedback

  • Set a routine and record when you actually read.
  • Compare time spent across books or periods if the app supports those reports.
  • Use reminders or streak-style prompts only if they help rather than pressure you.

Verify current platform support, pricing, export behavior, and the exact statistics offered by each app. The comparison result establishes their session-and-habit emphasis, not a complete specification sheet.

How to choose without overbuying features

  1. Write your minimum workflow. List the statuses you truly use: planned, reading, finished, abandoned, or something else.
  2. Separate must-have and nice-to-have features. For example, import may be mandatory, while social feeds may be irrelevant.
  3. Check your devices first. Confirm support for the phone, tablet, computer, or e-reader you actually use. A store listing for one platform does not prove availability on another.
  4. Inspect data portability. Find the export command and read what fields it produces. If no export explanation is easy to find, treat that as a switching risk.
  5. Test with a small sample. Add several books spanning different formats, statuses, and tags before moving your complete library.
  6. Review privacy controls. Decide whether your reading history is public, visible to friends, or private by default, and check whether individual books or shelves can be hidden.
  7. Verify the paywall. Current free and paid boundaries can change by region and over time. Use the app’s current pricing page or store listing rather than an old comparison article.

Moving from another tracker

Migration is where a promising app can fail you. The StoryGraph listing provides the clearest documented example: it says four Goodreads statuses—currently reading, read, to-read, and did-not-finish—can be imported, and that custom shelves map to custom tags.

A careful migration sequence

  1. Record your current shelf names and any rules you use to interpret them.
  2. Open the destination app’s current import instructions and identify the accepted source and file or connection method. Labels can change, so follow the instructions shown in your account rather than an older tutorial.
  3. Import a small test set if the service allows it.
  4. Check each status after transfer, especially currently reading, did-not-finish, and books with more than one custom shelf.
  5. Confirm that custom shelves became the intended tags or lists, not a single flattened category.
  6. Compare counts and spot-check titles, authors, editions, ratings, and notes.
  7. Keep the original export or account data until the destination library is verified.

This documented import path applies to The StoryGraph’s described Goodreads transfer. It does not establish that Goodreads, Hardcover, Fable, Libby, Audible, Bookmory, or Bookly can import one another’s data, nor that every custom field survives.

Privacy, export, and price checks

Reading history can reveal interests, beliefs, health concerns, and habits. A comparison that only lists shelves and recommendations is not a privacy audit. Read the current privacy policy, identify what profile activity is public, and look for controls over friend visibility, club participation, reviews, and individual shelves.

Export is equally important. A service may let you download a list but omit notes, dates, tags, ratings, or session data. Before building a decade-long archive, find out whether exports are available, which fields are included, and whether the format can be opened without the original app.

Current comparison pages describe free core features for several apps and paid tiers for some, but they do not establish authoritative prices or a complete paywall matrix. Prices can vary by country, operating system, subscription term, and promotion. Check the current official app listing or pricing page immediately before subscribing; do not rely on a figure copied from an older article.

I want to understand my reading patterns

Prioritize The StoryGraph’s documented statistics comparisons and the totals, genres, moods, and time-change views described by TechRadar. Confirm which reports are available on your device and account tier.

I discover books through friends

Evaluate Goodreads first, then compare the social emphasis of Hardcover or Fable. Look at the quality of the communities you actually want to join, not just the existence of a feed.

My reading is mostly a club activity

Fable’s club orientation may fit better than a private catalog, while Hardcover is another social option to investigate. Confirm how personal and club histories coexist.

I borrow almost everything from a library

Libby is the natural service to evaluate for borrowing. Add a separate tracker if you need a permanent record beyond loan activity.

I listen to almost everything

Audible is the audiobook-first option in the comparisons. Verify whether its current organization tools cover titles you consume in print or ebook formats before making it your universal list.

I am trying to build a daily habit

Look at Bookmory or Bookly because their comparison distinction is session and habit tracking. Reject that complexity if a simple shelf is all you need.

A practical final check

Before choosing, add five books that represent your real life: one planned title, one in progress, one finished, one abandoned, and one that belongs to a special project. Apply the tags or shelves you expect to keep, inspect one discovery screen, locate statistics, and find the export and privacy settings. This short test exposes more than a generic feature list.

The right app is the one whose organization model matches your habits and whose data you can recover if your needs change. Treat platform support, import behavior, privacy controls, export fields, and paid boundaries as facts to verify at the time you sign up, not permanent properties that an old comparison can guarantee.
