The best app depends on what you wrote and what “searchable” means. If your notes were written with a stylus inside a note-taking app and you want both library search and editable typed text, MyScript Notes (formerly Nebo) is the clearest documented candidate. If you use an iPad and only need to find words while keeping the original ink, GoodNotes is a candidate identified in Apple’s 2023 business-app guide. Photos or scans of paper notes are a separate image-recognition problem: do not assume that an app that searches digital pen strokes can read a photographed page.
Use the workflow below to match your source material, desired output, language, device and export needs. No controlled, independent comparison establishes a universal accuracy winner, especially for cursive, poor scans or unusual handwriting.

First decide what “convert handwriting to searchable text” means
Product descriptions often use “handwriting to text” for three different results. Choosing the wrong result can leave you with an app that technically searches your notes but cannot produce the editable document you expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Outcome | What you receive | Typical source | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Searchable ink | Your handwriting stays as pen strokes, but the app indexes words so you can find them in a notebook or library. | Notes written with a stylus in the app. | Whether search covers all notebooks, drawings, handwritten annotations and imported documents. |
| Editable transcription | Recognized handwriting becomes typed characters that can be edited, copied or exported. | Digital pen strokes captured while writing. | Recognition languages, conversion controls and export formats. |
| Image or scan OCR | Characters are recognized from a photograph, scan or rasterized PDF page. | Existing paper notebooks, worksheets or scanned archives. | Explicit image/scan OCR support, page limits, layout handling and the app’s behavior on your handwriting. |
Searchable ink is not the same as a transcription. An index can help you locate a word while preserving the original strokes; it does not necessarily create a text layer you can revise. Conversely, digital-ink conversion does not prove that the same app can recognize handwriting in a camera image. Ask which of these three outcomes you need before installing anything.

Match the app to your source material
Digital notes written with a stylus
When the handwriting was created inside a note app, the software has access to individual pen strokes, their order and their position on the page. This is the workflow documented most clearly for MyScript Notes and the searchable-ink workflow described for GoodNotes. It is usually the easiest starting point because you are not asking the app to infer strokes from pixels.
Paper pages photographed or scanned
A scan is an image. The app must include an OCR feature that accepts an image or scanned PDF; a vector-ink search engine cannot automatically reconstruct pen strokes from a photograph. Before importing an archive, confirm the exact image or PDF workflow in the current app documentation. Test representative pages containing your real cursive, abbreviations, low contrast, skew, ruled lines and mixed diagrams. The available product descriptions do not provide a controlled accuracy comparison for these conditions.
PDFs containing handwriting
There are two cases. A PDF may contain selectable typed text plus your digital annotations, or it may be a scan of paper. An app can index annotations you add with a stylus without recognizing handwriting that was already baked into a scanned page. Verify whether the app searches annotation ink, existing PDF text, scanned images, or all three.
App recommendations by job
| If your priority is… | Candidate | What the available evidence supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Convert digital pen notes and search the same library | MyScript Notes | MyScript says the app converts handwriting to typed text and searches handwritten content, diagram text and PDF annotations. | These are vendor specifications, not an independent accuracy test; current features and plan terms can change. |
| Search handwritten ink on an iPad | GoodNotes | Apple’s 2023 business-app guide says GoodNotes 5 supports handwritten notes, PDF annotation and search through a vector ink engine. | The guide does not establish editable transcription, scanned-paper OCR, current platform coverage or current pricing. |
| Evaluate another mainstream note app | Notability, Apple Notes or Microsoft OneNote | Apple’s guide lists these as note-taking options and describes their general roles. | The reviewed material is insufficient for current feature, OCR, language, platform or price comparisons. Check each app directly. |
| Recognize handwriting from paper scans | Any app with explicit image/scan OCR | No candidate in the available material has a verified, measured advantage for this workflow. | Confirm that your edition accepts images or scanned PDFs and run a sample-page test before migrating an archive. |
MyScript Notes: the most fully documented digital-ink option
MyScript Notes, formerly called Nebo, is the strongest documented match when you want two outputs from digital handwriting: searchable notes that remain in ink and a conversion to editable typed text. MyScript’s product material says you can search a library including handwritten content, diagram text and PDF annotations, then convert handwriting to typed text when you need to edit or share it.

What it can do according to the vendor
- Convert handwriting made with a compatible active or passive pen or stylus into typed text.
- Search handwritten content in the note library.
- Search text in diagrams and annotations added to PDFs.
- Import multi-page PDFs for annotation; MyScript says those documents remain searchable.
- Export to PDF, PNG, SVG, Word or the Nebo format.
- Recognize 66 handwriting languages, a specification on MyScript’s current product page accessed in 2026.
The language count, supported devices and feature list are vendor-reported and may change. Check the current listing for your region and operating system before relying on a particular language or export path.
Platforms and naming
MyScript says the iOS and Android versions use the MyScript Notes name, while the Windows version retains the Nebo name. That naming difference matters when you search an app store or compare documentation. Confirm that your tablet supports the active or passive stylus you intend to use; stylus compatibility is a device issue, not a guarantee that every pen works on every tablet.
PDF and export implications
If your workflow begins with a multi-page PDF, MyScript’s stated import and annotation support can keep the document in one workspace. The listed export choices cover common sharing and editing scenarios: PDF for a fixed document, PNG for page images, SVG for vector artwork, Word for a typed document and Nebo for continued work in the app’s format. Export a short sample first and inspect whether the result contains editable text, preserved ink or both, depending on the option you selected.
Trial and pricing checks
MyScript says pricing varies by region and promotion. Its FAQ describes a seven-day trial and a limited free version after the trial. Those terms are not a universal price quote: app-store taxes, currency, billing period and promotional eligibility can differ. Read the current local store page before starting a trial, and check what remains available when the trial ends.

GoodNotes: a candidate for searchable ink
Apple’s 2023 business-app guide describes GoodNotes 5 as supporting handwritten notes and PDF annotation, with search provided by a vector ink engine. That is useful if your primary goal is to locate a handwritten word without changing the visual form of your notes.
The guide is dated and does not establish that GoodNotes converts handwriting into editable typed text, recognizes handwriting in a scanned-paper image, supports every current platform or offers a particular plan. Treat it as evidence of the searchable-ink workflow described at that time, not as a current accuracy or OCR certification. Check the current app documentation for the version and device you use.
When searchable ink is enough
Searchable ink suits meeting notes, study notebooks and annotated PDFs where preserving the original page matters. You can search for a term, jump to the matching page and continue reading the original handwriting. If you need to paste paragraphs into a report, translate the writing or correct names and numbers, require a documented transcription feature instead of assuming the index can be exported as text.

Apple’s guide includes Notability, Apple Notes and Microsoft OneNote among note-taking apps. The material reviewed for this article does not establish their current handwriting-recognition languages, scan OCR behavior, export formats, pricing, storage model or cross-platform coverage. They remain reasonable apps to investigate if you already use one, but there is not enough evidence here to rank them against MyScript Notes or GoodNotes.

For each candidate, look for separate statements about digital-ink search, handwriting-to-text conversion and image OCR. A page that says “handwriting support” may describe drawing or annotation only. Ask whether recognition happens on-device or through a service, whether your account is required, and whether exported files retain the text layer you need.

How to test an app before moving your whole notebook
A short, controlled test prevents an expensive migration based on a marketing label. Use the same pages and success criteria for every candidate.
- Prepare representative material. Gather a page of ordinary print, a page of cursive, numbers and dates, a page with headings and a diagram, and one low-contrast or slightly skewed scan if paper OCR matters.
- Test live digital ink. Write a distinctive sentence in the app, save it, close the note and search for two words. Confirm whether the result opens the original ink and whether search spans the whole library or only the current page.
- Test conversion separately. Select a short passage and invoke the app’s handwriting-to-text command. Correct several words, copy the result into a plain text editor and check whether line breaks, punctuation and numbers survived.
- Test a PDF annotation. Import a multi-page PDF, write an unusual term on page three, save it and search for that term. This reveals whether annotation ink is indexed and whether the imported document remains usable.
- Test paper recognition only where documented. Import a photo or scanned page using the app’s OCR workflow. Compare the recognized text with the original, paying attention to names, symbols, columns, tables and mixed handwriting.
- Test export. Export the same note as the format you plan to archive. Reopen the file in the target application and verify whether text is selectable and editable, ink remains visible and page order is intact.
- Record language and plan limits. Note the recognition language selected, device used, trial end date and any page, notebook or export restriction shown by the current app listing.
Common failure modes and practical fixes
Search finds nothing
You may be searching a scanned image, using a language the recognizer does not support, or looking in a scope that excludes the notebook or PDF annotation. Confirm that the page contains digital ink, select the correct recognition language and search from the library level. If the source is a photo, switch to an explicitly documented image-OCR workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
The app finds a word but cannot produce editable text
That is the normal distinction between indexing and transcription. Keep the searchable-ink workflow if preserving handwriting is your goal; otherwise choose an app that documents conversion and test its export into your intended editor.

Typed output misreads cursive or numbers
No independent head-to-head accuracy figure is established for these apps. Improve the test conditions by using the recognition language that matches the page, writing larger and more clearly for new digital notes, and correcting the output before export. For an existing paper archive, compare several representative pages rather than trusting one successful sample.
PDF text and handwritten notes behave differently
Selectable text already embedded in a PDF may be searchable even when handwriting is not. An annotation layer may be indexed as digital ink, while a scanned page remains only an image. Test each layer separately and do not infer scan OCR from annotation search.
The exported document looks right but is not editable
PDF and PNG are primarily presentation formats. If you need editable paragraphs, use the app’s documented typed-text or Word export and open the result in your target editor. Preserve the original ink file until you have checked the conversion.
Language, device and plan checks to make before committing
- Match the app edition to your operating system; MyScript’s current naming differs between iOS/Android and Windows.
- Confirm that your tablet and pen combination is supported, including whether the app accepts active, passive or both stylus types.
- Check the recognition language list, especially for multilingual notes, accented characters and non-Latin scripts.
- Read local app-store billing terms. MyScript describes a seven-day trial and limited free access after it, but regional pricing and promotions vary.
- Verify whether the plan includes the notebooks, PDF pages, exports and synchronization you actually need.
- Review storage and privacy settings before importing sensitive notebooks; comparative practices were not established for the candidates discussed here.
A simple decision path
- Have digital pen notes? If no, skip to the scan-OCR verification step. If yes, continue.
- Need editable typed text as well as search? Start with MyScript Notes because both capabilities are documented for digital handwriting.
- Only need to locate words while keeping ink? GoodNotes is a candidate for iPad users based on Apple’s 2023 description of its vector ink search.
- Working from paper photos or scanned pages? Require explicit image/scan OCR documentation and test your own pages. Do not select solely on the basis of digital-ink search.
- Need a specific language, PDF export or Windows support? Check the current vendor page and app-store listing, then run the seven-step test above before importing your archive.
What the available evidence cannot prove
There is no qualifying independent statistic or controlled head-to-head test here that ranks handwriting accuracy. In particular, the evidence does not justify promising reliable cursive recognition, declaring one app best for every scan condition or treating vendor language counts as a quality score. MyScript’s 66-language figure is a product specification, not a comparative measurement. App names, platforms, prices and feature availability can change, so recheck them when you install.
Bottom line
Choose by workflow, not by the phrase “handwriting to text.” For digital stylus notes that must remain searchable and also become editable text, MyScript Notes has the most complete documented feature set, including PDF annotation, multiple export formats and a vendor-listed 66 recognition languages. For iPad users who primarily want searchable handwritten ink, GoodNotes is a documented candidate, but the cited guide does not prove editable transcription or paper OCR. For photos and scans, require explicit image-recognition support and judge the app with your own representative pages before trusting it with an archive.
