Best Apps and Brokers for Buying US Stocks from India (2026 Guide)

There is no single best app for every Indian investor. The practical choices are an India-focused route such as INDmoney, an IFSC-linked route such as Groww (only if new US-stock activation is open), and a direct international broker such as Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Compare the legal broker and custodian, not just the mobile app: they determine where your money is held, which regulator applies, what fees you pay and which statements you receive.

For fractional shares and recurring SIP-style purchases, INDmoney is the clearest fit from the published feature set. Groww can be convenient when its IFSC US-stock service is accepting new accounts. IBKR is the more broker-centric option for investors who need broad international access and are comfortable with more detailed pricing and compliance. Provider and government pages listed the figures and availability notes below on 17 October 2026; tariffs, tax rules and account availability can change.

Route Best suited to Published cost structure Important qualification
INDmoney Investors wanting fractional shares, SIP-style investing and an India-oriented workflow 0.25% brokerage; bank foreign-exchange charge listed at 0.5%–1.2%; account opening, annual maintenance, platform, withdrawal and reporting fees shown as zero Protection and tax descriptions apply to the structure stated by the provider; confirm the legal entities in your account documents
Groww US Stocks Investors who want an IFSC-linked service and a simple Indian-bank funding path US-stock brokerage listed as 0.1% or $1 per executed order, whichever is higher; SEC, FINRA and CAT charges are separate Groww’s help page says new US-stock account activation is currently paused; verify that accounts are open before planning a transfer
Interactive Brokers Experienced investors seeking a direct international broker and wider product access India pages publish order-value-based pricing; statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges may be added Exact total depends on the product, venue, order and applicable statutory charges; read the India tariff for your account

These are not three interchangeable wrappers. Your account agreement should identify the broker-dealer, custodian, funding account and regulator. Keep those names with your statements for tax filing and any support or dispute process.

How the costs really differ

A headline brokerage rate is only one part of the cost. An Indian resident can also encounter the bank’s foreign-exchange spread, remittance charges and regulatory or statutory fees. A meaningful comparison uses the same order size and includes every published component.

INDmoney

INDmoney lists brokerage at 0.25% and bank FX charges at 0.5%–1.2%. It shows account opening, AMC, platform, withdrawal and reporting fees as zero. “Zero” on those line items does not remove the bank’s FX cost or any charge imposed by a payment intermediary. Ask which entity applies the FX rate and whether the quoted percentage is a spread, a separate fee or both.

Groww

Groww’s current pricing page lists $0 account opening and $0 maintenance. US-stock brokerage is “0.1% or $1 per executed order whichever is higher.” SEC, FINRA and CAT fees are listed separately, so the amount debited can exceed the displayed brokerage. The percentage is more than the $1 minimum on orders above $1,000; on smaller orders the $1 minimum can dominate. Confirm how the IFSC route quotes FX and remittance costs before comparing it with an India-focused platform.

Interactive Brokers

IBKR publishes India-specific, order-value-based pricing and notes additional statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges. The applicable total depends on the security, exchange, order value and account structure. Use the India individual-account tariff rather than a generic international fee page, and save the tariff version used for your calculation.

Illustrative order comparison

The following examples show how to read the published schedules; they are not a promise of the final debit. They use a $1,000 and a $10,000 purchase and exclude any unlisted bank or statutory item.

Provider Brokerage on $1,000 order Brokerage on $10,000 order Other published components
INDmoney $2.50 at 0.25% $25 at 0.25% Bank FX listed at 0.5%–1.2%; other platform line items shown as zero
Groww $1 (0.1% equals $1, before separate SEC/FINRA/CAT fees) $10 (0.1%, before separate SEC/FINRA/CAT fees) Account opening and maintenance shown as $0; FX and remittance treatment must be confirmed
IBKR Not stated without the applicable India tariff and product Not stated without the applicable India tariff and product Order-value pricing plus possible statutory, exchange, tax and GST charges

For example, on a $10,000 INDmoney purchase, the listed brokerage is $25 and the stated 0.5%–1.2% bank FX range would represent another $50–$120 equivalent on the remitted amount. That is an illustration of the percentage, not a quote. Do not label any provider “cheapest” until you have added your own bank’s FX rate, remittance fee and every regulatory charge.

Funding US stocks under India’s LRS

The Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) is the framework used by resident individuals to remit money abroad for permitted purposes, including overseas investing. INDmoney states a ceiling of $250,000 per financial year for overseas investing. Treat that as a cumulative annual limit across your remittances, not as a per-app allowance. Your bank may require purpose declarations, KYC records and tax collection or reporting steps that change with current rules.

What you normally need before sending money

  • An active Indian bank account in your own name and completed KYC with the investing platform.
  • The beneficiary and purpose details supplied by the platform or its regulated funding partner.
  • A record of the remittance amount and date so you can track your financial-year LRS usage.
  • Confirmation of the receiving broker or custodian and the currency in which the account is credited.

Groww’s help page says an Indian resident does not need a separate US bank account for trading purposes. That statement concerns its route; it does not mean every international broker uses the same funding process. Follow the beneficiary instructions shown inside your own account and confirm them with support if the name, country or purpose code differs from your bank’s form.

Deposits, idle cash and withdrawals

Before transferring, check whether the provider accepts direct bank remittance, whether money first passes through an IFSC or other intermediary account, and how long a credit normally takes. For a withdrawal, verify the destination account, minimum amount, processing fee and whether the proceeds must return to the original remitter. A platform displaying a zero withdrawal fee may still leave you with bank FX or correspondent-bank charges. Keep the remittance advice, broker confirmation and withdrawal statement together.

Onboarding: a practical sequence

The exact screens change, but the control points are consistent. Complete the steps in this order to avoid funding an account that is not enabled for US trading.

  1. Check availability first. Open the provider’s current US-stock page and confirm that new accounts can be activated. This is essential for Groww because its help page says activation is paused.
  2. Read the legal-entity disclosure. Record the broker-dealer, custodian, IFSC entity or international entity named in the agreement. The app brand alone is not enough for tax or protection questions.
  3. Complete identity and tax information. Supply the requested Indian address, PAN, bank and identity details exactly as shown on your documents. A mismatch can delay KYC or a withdrawal.
  4. Review the tariff before approving. Look for brokerage, FX, remittance, exchange, regulatory, GST, withdrawal and currency-conversion charges. Save a copy or screenshot with the date.
  5. Link and verify the Indian bank account. Use an account in the permitted name and follow the platform’s beneficiary instructions. Do not send a test transfer to an unverified account number.
  6. Fund within your LRS plan. Enter the remittance purpose and amount through your bank, and update your own annual ledger. Keep the bank acknowledgement.
  7. Place a small first order. Check the executed quantity, exchange rate, brokerage and any regulatory line items against the preview. This catches account or currency errors before a larger transfer.
  8. Download statements. Retain trade confirmations, dividend records, FX details, remittance receipts and year-end tax reports for the period in which you file in India.

Fractional shares and recurring investing

Fractional investing lets you buy a portion of a US share when the whole-share price exceeds your chosen amount. INDmoney explicitly documents fractional investing and SIP capability. That can make a fixed-rupee or fixed-dollar schedule practical, but read the execution rules: the platform may aggregate orders, set a dealing window or restrict transfers of fractional positions. Those operational details are account-specific.

Do not assume that every stock, ETF or order type supports fractions. Confirm whether a fractional position can be transferred to another broker, whether it can be sold only as a market order and how dividends are allocated to a partial share. If a recurring plan is your priority, test one cycle and inspect the confirmation before increasing the amount.

The available universe also differs by route. A direct international broker may expose more markets and order types, while an India-focused app may curate a narrower list for a simpler experience. Ask for the current eligible-stock and ETF list rather than inferring coverage from the app’s search box.

Broker, custodian and investor protection

Protection follows the legal structure, not the logo on your phone. The account documents should identify where securities and uninvested cash are held and which compensation scheme applies.

INDmoney describes SIPC protection up to $500,000 for its stated structure, including $250,000 of cash coverage. SIPC protection is designed for a broker failure and missing customer property; it is not insurance against a share price falling, a bad investment decision or currency movement. Confirm that the specific entity named in your agreement is the one covered by that statement.

No equivalent protection limits for Groww or IBKR in every account configuration are published in the available disclosures. Obtain the relevant broker-dealer and custodian disclosure before relying on a protection limit. An IFSC registration, a foreign broker membership and a bank account are separate facts and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Taxes and reporting for an Indian resident

US dividend withholding

INDmoney states that US dividends paid to Indian residents are subject to 25% withholding and that a foreign-tax credit may be claimed in India. The withholding happens before the dividend reaches your account. Keep the dividend statement showing gross income and tax withheld; claiming a credit requires the documentation and filing treatment applicable to your circumstances.

Capital gains in India

The Income Tax Department’s share-sale guidance says Finance Act 2024 introduced a uniform 12.5% long-term capital-gains rate for covered capital assets and removed indexation in the stated cases. Whether a particular US share or ETF, holding period and transaction falls within that guidance must be determined from current law. Short-term treatment, loss set-off, surcharge, cess and reporting can change the result, so do not apply 12.5% mechanically to every sale.

Foreign-asset disclosure

US securities and related income can create foreign-asset and foreign-income reporting obligations in an Indian return. Use the broker’s annual statements, dividend records, sale confirmations and remittance trail, and compare them with the latest Income Tax Department instructions. If you have multiple accounts, consolidate the figures rather than relying on a single platform’s summary. A chartered accountant or tax professional should handle cases involving substantial gains, several jurisdictions, inherited assets or disputed residency.

Choosing by investor profile

You want small, regular purchases

Choose the route whose published features support fractional shares and recurring investing, then verify execution and transfer rules. INDmoney is the only provider in this comparison whose published information explicitly documents both features. Compare its 0.25% brokerage and 0.5%–1.2% bank FX range with your actual transfer pattern; frequent small remittances can make FX more important than the trade commission.

You already use an IFSC-linked ecosystem

Groww may reduce friction if its US-stock activation is open and its all-in funding quote suits you. Its published $1 minimum or 0.1% brokerage is only the trading component, with SEC, FINRA and CAT fees separate. The current activation pause makes an availability check a prerequisite, not a minor footnote.

You need a direct, international broker

IBKR is appropriate to investigate when product breadth, direct broker access and detailed order controls matter more than a simplified Indian app. Expect to read an India-specific tariff and account disclosures and to reconcile statutory, exchange, tax and GST items. It is a poor fit if you want a fully guided, minimal-paperwork experience and are unwilling to maintain your own records.

Common failure points and fixes

  • Activation is unavailable: Do not transfer funds while an account is pending. Ask whether the pause applies to all new applicants or only a particular route, and request the current expected process.
  • The debit is higher than the brokerage shown: Reconcile FX, SEC, FINRA, CAT, exchange, tax, GST, correspondent-bank and remittance lines separately. A low commission does not prove a low all-in cost.
  • KYC or withdrawal is delayed: Check that your name, address, PAN and bank details match exactly. Submit the requested source-of-funds or remittance evidence through the provider’s secure channel.
  • A fractional position cannot be moved: Ask before buying whether fractions are transferable, or plan to sell and repurchase at the destination after considering spread and tax consequences.
  • Tax records do not match: Compare trade confirmations with the cash ledger and dividend statements. Record the exchange-rate method used by your broker or tax adviser and retain the original foreign-currency amounts.
  • You approach the LRS ceiling: Stop new remittances until you reconcile every transfer in the financial year. The $250,000 figure stated by INDmoney is an annual framework limit, not a guarantee that your bank will approve any particular transaction.

Questions to ask before opening the account

  1. Which legal broker and custodian will hold my US shares and cash?
  2. Is the account open to new Indian residents today, and what is the expected activation time?
  3. What is the all-in cost for my normal order size after brokerage, FX, remittance and regulatory charges?
  4. Can I buy fractions of the exact stocks or ETFs I want, and can those fractions be transferred?
  5. How are dividends, withholding tax, corporate actions and annual statements reported?
  6. What protection scheme applies to this exact entity, and what does it exclude?
  7. How do deposits and withdrawals move through my Indian bank, and which fees can the bank or correspondent charge?

Recheck these answers immediately before your first transfer. Pricing pages, LRS procedures, tax rates, protection disclosures and product availability are volatile; a saved quote from an earlier month is not a current tariff.
