Best Apple HomeView Alternatives for Controlling a Smart Home (2026 Guide)

Short answer: Choose the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) if you want a conventional screen and voice-controlled hub, Home Assistant if you need to combine devices and assistants from different ecosystems, or Homey Pro if you want a dedicated multi-protocol hub. Keep using Apple Home with a HomePod or Apple TV 4K if your accessories already work well there. None is a feature-for-feature copy of Apple HomeView, so compatibility with your existing lights, cameras, locks, thermostats and routines should decide the purchase.

Apple announced HomeView on October 13, 2026. It is a shared 7-inch household display with touch controls, Siri AI and a camera dashboard, priced at $299 in the United States for either the tabletop or wall-mounted model. The alternatives below address different parts of that proposition rather than simply offering another screen.

What Apple HomeView actually replaces

HomeView is a shared control point for Apple Home rather than a standalone smart-home protocol. Apple describes a 7-inch Liquid Retina display, touch interaction and Siri AI voice control. Its Home Modular face provides quick access to favorite accessories, while the Home Camera face can display up to nine video feeds at once. Apple says users can view cameras, adjust lights and thermostats, lock doors and close blinds.

It works with Apple Home Collection, Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories, subject to each accessory’s compatibility. Apple also positions HomeView alongside the Home app, HomePod, Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini. That means an alternative does not necessarily have to replace Apple’s interface: a bridge or second hub can add capability while Apple Home remains the household’s familiar control layer.

Apple’s launch price is $299 in the US for both announced form factors. Preorders opened October 13 in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, with availability announced for November 13, 2026. Singapore preorders were announced for October 15, also with November 13 availability, and South African sales were announced through authorized resellers from November 13. Apple said HomeView was not available for sale in the European Union at launch because Siri AI was unavailable in iOS there; check Apple’s current regional store information before ordering.

Setup and multiuser features require a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software. Siri AI on HomeView is available in English in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Canadian French support was announced as planned for a later date. Some camera summaries require an eligible iCloud+ plan and a compatible camera setup.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, described HomeView as “designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user.” That is Apple’s positioning, not an independent test result.

The table separates the type of product from the ecosystem behind it. A display can look like HomeView while supporting a different set of devices; a software platform can control more brands without supplying a screen.

The best alternative for each kind of household

Choose Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) for a direct screen-and-voice replacement

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 smart-home hub guide names the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) its best overall smart-home hub, citing its compact display, Alexa device control and straightforward setup. It is the closest conceptual match for someone who wants a visible household control point with voice interaction rather than a phone-only app.

Before buying, list the devices you actually use: cameras, lights, thermostats, locks, blinds and any routines that depend on them. Confirm that each model has the Alexa integration and that the actions you need are supported. A device may appear in Alexa while exposing fewer controls than it does in Apple Home, and an existing Apple Home scene will not automatically become an Alexa routine.

This is the sensible pick when the priority is “put a screen in a common room and start controlling compatible devices.” It is not the right answer if preserving Apple-specific automations, Siri behavior or HomeKit-only features matters more than having a display.

Choose Home Assistant for maximum flexibility

Home Assistant is a software layer for connecting devices and automations from multiple manufacturers. Its official FAQ says it can work alongside Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Devices that Apple Home does not support directly may still be exposed in Apple’s Home app after you add them to Home Assistant and configure the relevant integration.

Amazon Echo Show 15 (newest model), Full HD 15.6" kitchen hub for home organization, with built-in Fire TV, Designed for Alexa+
  • MEET ECHO SHOW 15 - A stunning 15.6" Full-HD (1080p) smart display that's perfect for your kitchen and ready to show you more. Use customizable widgets to keep your day on track, watch your favorite shows with Fire TV and powerful vibrant sound, and enjoy natural video calling, with 3.3x zoom and wide field of view.
  • FAMILY ORGANIZATION HUB - See your top widgets at a glance, like your family’s calendars and to-do lists, local weather, smart home, and more.
  • ALL YOUR FAVORITES, ALL RIGHT HERE - Built-in Fire TV unlocks endless entertainment, so you can enjoy your favorite content from thousands of apps like Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Apple TV, and more (subscription may be required). Fire TV remote included. Plus, now you can quickly add a device to play music with Active Media - start playing a song in the kitchen, then add the living room and bedroom on the fly.
  • SMART HOME CENTRAL - Control smart devices with your voice or a few taps using the smart home dashboard. Easily turn on all your living room lights at once or check live camera feeds to see what's happening around your home.
  • YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES ON DISPLAY - Brighten your space (and your day) by turning your home screen into a photo slideshow that displays your favorite memories. Auto curate your images and show off your favorite family memories.

That makes Home Assistant both an alternative and a complement. You can build a unified dashboard, create cross-brand automations and continue presenting selected devices through a familiar assistant. The trade-off is operational: you supply compatible hardware, install the software, configure integrations and keep the system maintained. It does not arrive as a finished 7-inch wall display.

Home Assistant fits a household that is willing to spend time on setup in exchange for control over dashboards, triggers and device relationships. It is excessive if you only need to turn a few lights on and off from a shared screen.

Choose Homey Pro for a dedicated multi-protocol hub

Homey’s US comparison lists Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave among the platform’s connectivity options, but support varies by product. The comparison covers Homey Cloud, Homey Pro mini and Homey Pro, with mobile and web apps and automation features across the range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Homey Pro when your devices span protocols and you prefer a purpose-built hub over assembling a software host. Confirm the exact model before purchase: protocol radios, features and regional behavior are not interchangeable. Homey’s page states that 433 MHz transmission is turned off on Homey Pro and Homey Bridge in the United States, Canada and South Korea. That regional restriction can rule out an otherwise suitable device.

Homey Pro is a control and automation platform, not a direct display substitute. You will normally interact through its apps or another compatible interface, so choose it for protocol coverage and automation rather than for HomeView’s shared-screen experience.

Choose HomePod (2nd Gen) when Apple Home already works

Tom’s Guide identifies the Apple HomePod (2nd Gen) as an Apple smart-home hub. It is the least disruptive option for a household already invested in Apple Home: you retain the Home app, Siri and existing Apple-compatible accessories while adding a home hub.

The compromise is obvious: HomePod does not provide HomeView’s dedicated visual dashboard, camera grid or wall-mounted display. Select it when reliable Apple Home access and voice control are enough, or when everyone already controls the home from phones and tablets.

Choose Google Nest Hub Max for a Google-first household

The Google Nest Hub Max is the display-oriented choice for households already using Nest products. Tom’s Guide describes it as suitable for cameras, video calls and media as well as Google Home control.

Aeotec Smart Home Hub2 - V4, Works as a SmartThings Hub, Zigbee, Matter Gateway, Compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, WiFi (No Z-Wave)
  • Powered by SmartThings: Connect, monitor, and automate your home through the SmartThings app. Build a reliable, unified smart home using Samsung's proven ecosystem
  • Matter + Zigbee Smart Home Hub: Supports the newest Matter standard plus Zigbee for lighting, sensors, plugs, switches, thermostats, and more - thousands of compatible devices. PLEASE NOTE: Z-Wave not supported
  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

It makes sense when your cameras, routines and accounts are already organized in Google Home. Do not assume that Matter support, where present, makes every Apple Home or Alexa feature equivalent; verify the exact accessory and the controls it exposes in Google Home.

How to decide without buying the wrong ecosystem

1. Inventory the devices that matter

Write down the exact model numbers for every device you expect the new hub to control. Group them into cameras, lights, thermostats, locks, blinds, sensors and media equipment. Compatibility claims at the platform level are not enough: the same product family can expose different functions depending on firmware, region and integration.

2. Identify your existing account and assistant

Count where your routines currently live. If most scenes are in Apple Home, an Apple hub or Home Assistant bridge may preserve more of your work than moving everything to Alexa or Google Home. If the household already uses Alexa or Google Assistant daily, a display in that ecosystem avoids teaching everyone a second control model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Decide whether you need a screen

  • Need live camera tiles, touch controls and a shared room display: choose HomeView, Echo Show 8 or Nest Hub Max according to your ecosystem.
  • Need voice control but no visual dashboard: HomePod can be sufficient for an Apple Home household.
  • Need configurable dashboards across brands: use Home Assistant, with a tablet or browser as the display.
  • Need a dedicated radio hub for several protocols: evaluate the exact Homey Pro model.

4. Match the protocols to the hardware

Matter is an application standard, not a guarantee that every feature behaves identically on every platform. Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave support is hardware- and product-specific. Confirm which radios are built into the model you are considering and whether the accessory needs a separate border router, bridge or coordinator.

5. Price the complete system

Include the hub or display, any required bridge, compatible phone or tablet, subscription, replacement hardware and your time for setup. HomeView’s $299 announcement price is easy to compare, but a software platform may shift cost into hardware and maintenance, while camera summaries can require an eligible iCloud+ plan.

Setup paths and what to expect

HomeView

  1. Update the compatible iPhone or iPad to Apple’s latest available software.
  2. Place the tabletop model or mount the wall model where household members can reach and see it.
  3. Sign in and complete the household and multiuser setup from the iPhone or iPad.
  4. Confirm that each Apple Home, Works with Apple Home or Matter accessory is compatible before assigning it to favorites or scenes.
  5. Add cameras only after checking whether your configuration and iCloud+ plan meet the requirements for camera summaries.
  6. Verify Siri AI language and regional availability; features announced for one market may not be available in another.

Echo Show 8

  1. Sign in with the household’s Alexa account and connect the display to Wi-Fi.
  2. Enable the manufacturer integrations for your exact lights, cameras, locks and thermostats.
  3. Test one device in each category before recreating routines.
  4. Rebuild scenes as Alexa routines and check that permissions and camera access are appropriate for a shared room.

Home Assistant

  1. Choose supported hardware to run Home Assistant and install the current release using its documented installation method.
  2. Add integrations for your device brands and verify that entities appear with the correct state and controls.
  3. Connect Home Assistant to Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa only after the base automations work.
  4. Expose only the devices and actions each assistant needs; this keeps voice control understandable and limits accidental access.
  5. Create a dashboard for a phone, browser or wall-mounted tablet, remembering that the dashboard hardware is separate from the software.

Homey Pro

  1. Select Homey Cloud, Homey Pro mini or Homey Pro based on the required protocols and regional availability.
  2. Check the model’s Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave support against your device inventory.
  3. Pair a small number of devices first and confirm their states and controls in the app.
  4. Build flows incrementally, testing triggers and fallback actions before adding security-critical devices such as locks.
  5. If you are in the United States, Canada or South Korea, account for the stated 433 MHz transmission limitation on Homey Pro and Homey Bridge.

Compatibility, privacy and regional issues that change the decision

Compatibility is feature-level, not logo-level

“Works with Matter,” “works with Apple Home” or “works with Alexa” identifies a platform relationship, not identical behavior. A camera may provide live video but not summaries; a thermostat may expose temperature but not every scheduling function; a lock may require a separate bridge. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and the controls available on your chosen platform.

Shared access needs deliberate permissions

A household display changes who can see camera feeds and operate locks or blinds. Review user accounts, guest access, voice recognition and camera privacy settings during setup. Software platforms offer more customization, but they also make it easier to expose an overly broad set of devices if you connect every integration by default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional and language support can be decisive

HomeView’s announced EU launch restriction is tied to Siri AI availability in iOS, not to the display hardware alone. Its English Siri AI support was announced for eight countries, with Canadian French planned later. Homey radio behavior also varies by region. Check local support pages, electrical requirements and return policies rather than relying on a US comparison.

  • Simple Smart Home control: Pair and control thousands of devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. Easily view your camera feeds. • Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.

Subscriptions and cloud dependence differ

HomeView camera summaries may require an eligible iCloud+ plan. Home Assistant can be self-hosted but requires you to maintain the host and integrations. Cloud-based hubs can simplify setup while making your experience more dependent on an account and internet service. Decide which trade-off is acceptable before moving security devices.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying by screen size alone

A similarly sized display can support a different assistant and a different camera or lock model. Start with the device inventory and required actions, then choose the screen.

Assuming Matter solves every compatibility problem

Matter does not ensure identical features across Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and third-party hubs. Confirm the specific device type, firmware and functions exposed after pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacing a working Apple Home setup unnecessarily

If your current Apple Home automations already work, adding a HomePod or a Home Assistant bridge may be less disruptive than migrating every scene to another ecosystem. Treat a new display as an interface decision, not an automatic platform migration.

Ignoring regional radio restrictions

Check country-specific protocol behavior before selecting Homey Pro or another multi-radio hub. The 433 MHz limitation stated for the United States, Canada and South Korea is a concrete example of why a global product page is not a universal guarantee.

Recreating routines before testing individual devices

Pair and test one light, one camera, one thermostat and one lock first. If an individual integration exposes the wrong state or lacks a required action, rebuilding dozens of routines will not fix it.

A practical buying checklist

  • List every device model and the actions you need to perform.
  • Choose the household’s primary ecosystem: Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant or Homey.
  • Decide whether a shared screen is essential or whether voice and phone control are enough.
  • Verify Matter, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave requirements for the exact hub model.
  • Check camera, lock and thermostat feature support individually.
  • Confirm account, subscription, phone, tablet and bridge requirements.
  • Check country, language, electrical and radio restrictions.
  • Plan permissions for shared displays and camera feeds.
  • Test a small installation before migrating the entire home.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) when the defining requirement is a conventional smart display with Alexa voice control. Choose Home Assistant when flexibility, mixed-brand integration and custom automation matter more than turnkey hardware. Choose Homey Pro when you want a dedicated hub and your accessory list spans several protocols, after checking the exact model and country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stay with Apple’s ecosystem through HomePod or the Home app when your devices and routines already work there and a dedicated screen is optional. Choose Google Nest Hub Max when your cameras, calls and media are already centered on Google Home. Choose HomeView itself when its shared 7-inch interface, Siri AI, Apple Home integration and up-to-nine-camera view justify the $299 US launch price and its regional requirements.
