Choose the full-size HomePod if speaker audio is a higher priority, or Apple TV 4K if you want to control Apple Home from a television. Apple’s official materials identify these devices as hub options but do not establish a dedicated Apple touchscreen Home hub.
Which Apple Home hub should you choose?
| Option | Best for | Hub and connectivity details | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomePod mini | A compact, lower-cost hub for Siri control in a room, especially if you use Thread accessories. | Becomes a hub when set up; Apple lists Thread networking. | It is a speaker, not a touchscreen control panel, and has a smaller speaker design than HomePod. |
| HomePod (2nd generation) | A hub that also serves as a more audio-focused room speaker. | Supports Home hub features and Thread; includes temperature and humidity sensors. | Costs more than HomePod mini in Apple’s US store snapshot and has no touchscreen. |
| Apple TV 4K | People who want streaming and Apple Home controls on a connected television. | Becomes a hub when assigned to a room in Home. Apple names Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-capable example. | Requires a television or other display; Thread capability should be checked against the exact model and configuration. |
| Supported third-party Thread border router | Homes that want a different Thread network path for Thread-based Matter accessories. | Apple recognizes supported third-party Thread border routers for those accessories. | It is not an Apple Home display or, by itself, a replacement for checking Home and Matter compatibility. |
HomePod mini: the compact all-rounder
Choose HomePod mini when you want an Apple hub in a room and need Thread support without buying a television-connected device. It can provide Siri voice control for compatible accessories and participates in Home automations. Apple listed it for $129 in its US store when checked on October 4, 2026; that is a dated US price snapshot, not a promise of current or international pricing. Apple US Store

HomePod (2nd generation): choose it for the speaker
The full-size HomePod is the better fit when you want a hub alongside a more substantial speaker. Apple specifies a 4-inch high-excursion woofer, five horn-loaded tweeters, and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Its Home hub role does not add a screen: control is through Siri, the Home app, and automations rather than a built-in touchscreen. Apple’s US store listed it at $349 on October 4, 2026; prices and availability can vary by date and region. Apple US Store
Apple TV 4K: control Home from the television
Apple TV 4K is the natural choice if it already fits your streaming setup and you want Home control associated with a connected display. Apple says it becomes a hub when configured in Home. Do not assume every Apple TV 4K supports Thread: Apple specifically names the 3rd-generation Wi-Fi + Ethernet configuration as an example of a Thread-capable hub. Verify the exact version and configuration before buying it for Thread accessories.

Do you need Thread or Matter support?
Matter and Thread are related but different compatibility questions. Matter is a smart-home standard; Thread is a low-power networking technology used by some Matter devices. Apple states, “You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app.” For a Thread-based Matter accessory, you also need a Thread-capable hub or a supported third-party Thread border router. Apple gives HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as examples of Thread-capable hubs. Apple Support: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV as a home hub
- If your accessories are Matter but do not use Thread, check Apple Home compatibility and the hub requirement; do not treat Thread as mandatory for every Matter product.
- If an accessory uses Thread, confirm that your chosen hub or supported border router supports Thread before purchase.
- Check each accessory’s Apple Home and Matter compatibility separately. A hub cannot make an incompatible accessory work.
What can you control, and how?
Voice control with HomePod
HomePod and HomePod mini let you use Siri to control HomeKit- or Matter-enabled accessories configured in the Home app. What Siri can do depends on the accessories and scenes you have set up. Both HomePod models also include temperature and humidity sensors; Apple says they are intended for domestic indoor conditions and may need time to calibrate after startup. Television-based control with Apple TV
Apple TV can be assigned to a room in the Home app and connected to a display, making it the Apple option for a television-centered setup. It is not a dedicated touchscreen panel: the display is the television, and hub selection still depends on your accessory needs, including Thread.

Remote access and automations
A home hub enables remote access to your Home and supports home automations. Remote access depends on a functioning hub at home that is powered on and connected to the home Wi-Fi network. Apple’s setup and troubleshooting guidance also calls out current software, iCloud Keychain, and two-factor authentication. Apple Support: Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV as a home hub

Is there an Apple Home touchscreen display?
Apple’s official materials identify HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hub options, but they do not establish a dedicated Apple touchscreen Home hub. HomePod models are speakers with voice control; Apple TV provides a television-connected route. If you specifically want a touchscreen mounted or placed for smart-home controls, this Apple-only shortlist does not identify a verified Apple product for that role.
How to set up an Apple device as a home hub
- Set up HomePod or HomePod mini: follow Apple’s HomePod setup flow. Once set up, either speaker automatically becomes a home hub.
- Set up Apple TV: configure it through Home settings and assign it to a room in the Home app. Apple TV becomes a hub when configured this way.
- For remote access: keep the hub powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi. Follow Apple’s guidance on current software, iCloud Keychain, and two-factor authentication if remote access does not work.
- For Matter accessories: set up a home hub before adding the accessory to Home. For a Thread-based Matter accessory, confirm that the hub or supported third-party border router is Thread-capable.
