For most Android phones, start with Google Play Protect. It is enabled by default, checks apps before and after installation, scans apps installed from outside Google Play, and can warn about, disable, or remove harmful software. Add a reputable third-party security app when you need an independent malware scanner, stronger web and phishing protection, anti-theft controls, privacy monitoring, or identity features.
iPhones need a different approach. Current iOS, a strong passcode or biometrics, two-factor authentication, Stolen Device Protection, App Store-only installs, unique passwords or passkeys, and caution with links provide the normal baseline. Apple’s Lockdown Mode is an exceptional control for people who may face highly sophisticated, targeted attacks—not a routine antivirus replacement.

There is no single “best” app independent of platform and threat model. The practical choice is a baseline plus only the extra controls you can use and maintain.
What anti-spyware apps actually protect against
“Spyware” covers software that secretly collects information, tracks activity, records communications, or gives another person access to a device. Consumer Android stalkerware is a particularly important subset: it is often installed by someone who has physical access to the phone and may be disguised as an innocuous utility.

Ordinary malware detection and stalkerware detection overlap, but they are not identical. A security app may recognize a malicious package while missing an abusive configuration, a legitimate remote-management tool, or a device that has been rooted. The FTC-hosted research on consumer Android spyware documents both extensive surveillance functions and security weaknesses in these apps. A 2025 AV-Comparatives test examined stalkerware detection separately across 13 Android security apps. Treat spyware coverage as its own buying criterion rather than assuming a high general malware score proves complete stalkerware protection.
Threats a mobile security app may address
- Malicious or repackaged apps, including apps installed from outside the official store.
- Phishing pages and links that imitate banks, email providers, cloud services, or delivery companies.
- Known malicious websites, downloads, and network destinations.
- Stalkerware or surveillance components identified by the vendor’s detection rules.
- Lost-device risks through remote lock, location, or wipe features, when the plan and operating system support them.
- Privacy exposure from excessive app permissions, leaked credentials, or unsafe account settings.
No app can guarantee detection of every targeted intrusion. Keep the operating system and apps patched, protect accounts, and treat an unexpected physical-access incident as a separate security event.
Why Google Play Protect is the Android starting point
Google says Play Protect “checks your apps and devices for harmful behavior.” It is built into Google-certified Android devices and is enabled by default. Before an app is downloaded, Google can check it; after installation, Play Protect scans apps periodically and also examines apps installed from other sources. If it identifies a harmful app, it can warn you, disable the app, or remove it. It can also display privacy alerts and reset permissions for apps you have not used recently.

Check that Play Protect is active
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect.
- Read the most recent scan result. Select Scan if you want an immediate check.
- Open the Play Protect settings and leave app scanning enabled. If your phone offers a separate option to improve detection of unknown apps, enable it unless you have a specific reason not to.
Menu names can differ slightly between Android releases and manufacturers. If you use a work-managed phone, an administrator may control these settings.

What Play Protect does not settle
Play Protect is not a promise that every spyware sample, phishing page, or account takeover will be stopped. It does not replace a secure lock screen, software updates, cautious link handling, or account-level two-factor authentication. It also does not tell you whether a partner, employer, or family member has legitimate administrative access to the device. For people worried about stalking, check device-management and accessibility settings as well as installed apps, and prioritize personal safety before removing anything that could alert an abuser.
What the latest independent Android test shows
AV-TEST’s July 2026 Android evaluation covered 12 mobile-security products. Each product received separate scores from 0 to 6 for protection, performance, and usability, for a maximum of 18 points.

The result is useful evidence, not a universal ranking. It reflects the versions and conditions used in that July 2026 test. A perfect score does not tell you which app has the best privacy policy, stalkerware coverage, battery behavior on your particular phone, anti-theft workflow, identity features, or price. Those details require a separate check of the current app and subscription.

- Independent protection results: Look for recent testing and check whether the tested version matches the current app.
- Spyware and stalkerware handling: Find out whether the vendor discusses these detections separately from ordinary viruses, and what happens when a suspected surveillance app is found.
- Web and phishing protection: Confirm which browsers and messaging apps are covered, whether protection works on Wi-Fi and cellular connections, and whether a VPN or local accessibility service is required.
- Anti-theft controls: Check whether the plan supports location, remote lock, alarm, or wipe, and whether those tools work after a SIM change or factory reset.
- Privacy monitoring: Determine whether alerts cover app permissions, exposed credentials, identity events, or only a narrow category of data.
- Performance impact: Read the vendor’s battery and resource disclosures, then watch your own battery, heat, and data usage during the first week.
- Supported Android versions: Do not assume an app supports an old phone indefinitely. Check the store listing and vendor requirements at installation.
- Permissions: A security app may request accessibility, VPN, notification, device-admin, or location access. Each permission should have a clear purpose; deny unrelated requests.
- Price and renewal: Current subscription prices and included features vary by country, app store, promotion, and plan. Compare the renewal price, number of protected devices, trial terms, and cancellation process—not just the introductory offer.
Bitdefender Mobile Security
Bitdefender Mobile Security 3.3 achieved the maximum 18/18 in AV-TEST’s July 2026 test, including full marks for protection, performance, and usability. That makes it a reasonable candidate when independent Android testing is your main filter. Before purchase, verify the current Android version requirement, which features are included in the mobile plan, how the app handles suspected stalkerware, and what data its privacy policy allows it to collect.
Norton 360 for Android
Norton 360 version 26.11 also scored 18/18 in the July 2026 AV-TEST evaluation. It may suit users who prefer a wider security-suite model, but “360” does not mean every feature is included in every subscription. Confirm web protection, identity monitoring, anti-theft functions, device limits, supported Android releases, and renewal pricing for the exact plan shown in your region.
iPhone security: why the answer is mostly platform controls
iOS apps run inside a tightly controlled platform and cannot generally scan the private contents of other apps the way a traditional desktop antivirus can. For that reason, installing a third-party “antivirus” app on an iPhone is not equivalent to installing an Android malware scanner. iPhone security depends primarily on Apple’s operating-system defenses, rapid updates, app distribution controls, account security, and your response to suspicious messages.

Set the everyday iPhone baseline
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install available iOS updates. Turn on automatic updates if the option suits your schedule.
- Use a long, unique device passcode and enable Face ID or Touch ID where supported.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your Apple Account and other important services. Prefer passkeys or unique passwords stored in a reputable password manager.
- In Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or the equivalent Touch ID menu), enable Stolen Device Protection when available on your iOS version.
- Install apps through the App Store and review an app’s developer, permissions, and privacy disclosures before installing.
- Do not open unexpected links or attachments, even when a message appears to come from a known contact. Verify requests through a separate channel.
- Review Settings > Privacy & Security periodically for location, microphone, camera, Bluetooth, contacts, and local-network access that an app does not need.
When Lockdown Mode makes sense
Apple says, “Lockdown Mode helps protect devices against extremely rare and highly sophisticated cyber attacks.” It is intended for the very small number of people who may be personally targeted, such as individuals handling sensitive investigations or facing sophisticated spyware campaigns. It limits some message attachments, web technologies, calls, invitations, configuration changes, and other features. Those restrictions can break normal websites and workflows.

To review it, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, read the feature list, and restart the iPhone if you enable it. Do not turn it on merely because a generic security app recommends it; first consider your threat model, the disruption to your work, and whether you can recover accounts and contacts if a feature is blocked.
How to tell whether a phone may have spyware
One symptom rarely proves spyware. Battery drain, heat, crashes, pop-ups, or high data use can also result from a failing battery, a buggy update, poor reception, or an ordinary app. Look for a pattern and investigate changes you did not make.
Android checks
- Review recently installed apps and uninstall anything you do not recognize, provided doing so is safe.
- Check Settings > Apps for unfamiliar services, and inspect special access such as accessibility, notification access, “display over other apps,” VPN, device-admin, and install-unknown-apps permissions.
- Review battery and mobile-data usage for an app that runs continuously without a clear reason.
- Run Play Protect, install system updates, and restart the phone.
- Look for an unknown work profile, device-management app, or changed lock-screen policy.
iPhone checks
- Review the App Library and Settings > General > iPhone Storage for apps you did not install.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security and review permissions, App Privacy Report, location-sharing settings, and Safety Check where available.
- Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for an unknown profile or management enrollment. Do not remove a profile belonging to your employer or school without confirming its purpose.
- Review Apple Account devices and sign-in notifications, then change the password from a trusted device if you see an unfamiliar session.
- Install the latest iOS update and restart the phone.
If you suspect an abusive partner or stalker
Removing surveillance software can notify the person monitoring you or erase evidence. If you are in immediate danger, use a different device to contact local emergency or domestic-abuse services. Preserve screenshots, dates, account alerts, and suspicious messages when doing so will not increase risk. Change passwords and revoke sessions from a safe device, and consider professional help before resetting the phone.

- Back up essential data. Use an account and backup destination the suspected attacker cannot access.
- Remove duplicate security apps. Multiple real-time scanners can cause battery drain, duplicate warnings, or conflicting accessibility and VPN services.
- Install from the official Google Play listing. Match the developer name and verify that the app supports your Android release.
- Read every permission prompt. Grant only the access needed for the feature you are enabling. Revisit permissions after setup.
- Run the first scan on a charged phone. Keep the device connected to a trusted network and allow the scan to finish.
- Configure anti-theft recovery. Add a recovery email or phone number, test account access, and record how to lock or wipe the phone from another device.
- Enable web protection only after understanding its mechanism. A local VPN or accessibility service can be normal for filtering, but it also has visibility into traffic or screen actions; use a provider whose privacy terms you accept.
- Test alerts. Confirm that notifications are visible, the app can update its definitions, and battery optimization is not preventing scheduled scans or anti-theft commands.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
“I installed two antivirus apps for extra protection.”
Keep one real-time security product unless you have a specific, documented reason to run another scanner. Remove the duplicate, restart the phone, and recheck battery and notification behavior.

“The app says it found spyware, so I deleted it immediately.”
First identify the package, permissions, and detection explanation. A legitimate parental-control, accessibility, remote-support, or workplace-management tool can look invasive. If abuse is possible, preserve evidence and seek help before removal.
“My iPhone security app says it scanned the whole phone.”
Check what it actually scanned. On iOS, a third-party app generally cannot inspect another app’s private data. It may be checking links, settings, account exposure, Wi-Fi conditions, or files you explicitly selected.
“Play Protect found nothing, so my accounts are safe.”
Play Protect focuses on harmful apps and behavior. It cannot undo a reused password, a stolen session cookie, a phishing disclosure, or a malicious person who already knows your passcode. Change exposed credentials, enable two-factor authentication, and sign out unknown sessions.
“Lockdown Mode broke a website or attachment.”
That restriction can be expected. Review Apple’s Lockdown Mode feature list, decide whether the targeted-threat benefit outweighs the disruption, and use a separate, ordinary device for workflows that cannot function under the restrictions.

Choose Play Protect alone when

Focus on Apple’s built-in controls when
- You use an iPhone and want the normal protection model Apple provides through iOS, account security, and App Store distribution.
- You are deciding whether a third-party app’s specific function—such as link checking or breach alerts—solves a real problem rather than assuming it can perform a full malware scan.
Consider Lockdown Mode when
- You face a credible, elevated risk of highly sophisticated targeted attacks.
- You can accept the loss of convenience and test essential contacts, websites, and workflows after enabling it.
Maintenance checklist
- Install operating-system and app updates promptly.
- Keep a unique passcode and unique passwords or passkeys for important accounts.
- Use two-factor authentication and review signed-in devices at least periodically.
- Review app permissions, profiles, accessibility access, VPNs, and device-management settings.
- Run an on-demand Android scan after installing software from an unfamiliar source or restoring a backup.
- Keep recovery codes and backup methods somewhere an attacker cannot reach.
- Recheck a paid app’s renewal price, plan contents, supported OS versions, and privacy policy before each renewal.
- Do not treat a clean scan as proof that a phone, account, or relationship is safe; investigate the surrounding circumstances.
