Lace-up and semi-rigid braces are common options, and evidence supports external ankle support as a way to reduce sprain risk. Choose by support style, shoe fit, adjustability and comfort—not by a product’s “best” label.
Do ankle braces help prevent basketball sprains?
Yes, evidence supports bracing as a prevention option, though it does not show that every brace works equally well or that a brace prevents every injury. A randomized trial published in 2011 found that lace-up ankle braces reduced acute ankle injury incidence among high school basketball athletes, whether or not they had a previous ankle injury. It did not find that braces reduced injury severity. The study tested a particular lace-up brace, so its result does not establish that every current model has the same effect. A 2018 British Journal of Sports Medicine guideline reports lower risk of both recurrent and first-time ankle sprains among sports participants using a brace or tape: RR 0.30 (95% CI 0.21–0.43) for recurrent sprains and RR 0.69 (95% CI 0.49–0.96) for first-time sprains. In one meta-analysis discussed by the guideline, lace-up or semi-rigid braces performed better than elastic bandaging; comparisons among types of external support remain debated. These findings support considering a brace, but they do not rank today’s retail models. See the BJSM guideline.

Support style
Lace-up braces use laces to secure the foot and ankle and may include straps for additional adjustment. Semi-rigid designs use supportive structures or guards to limit some ankle movement. Elastic bandages provide compression but, in the meta-analysis cited by the BJSM guideline, were less effective than lace-up or semi-rigid braces. No style is a universal winner; consider the support you want and whether you can wear the brace comfortably during play.

Fit inside your basketball shoe
A brace can offer little practical value if it crowds your shoe or changes the fit enough to make movement uncomfortable. Check the manufacturer’s size chart and try the brace in the basketball shoes you actually play in. Follow the sizing method for that particular model rather than assuming your usual shoe size translates directly.
ZAMST says its A2-DX can be worn with existing basketball shoes, but the wearer may need to adjust shoelace tightness for comfort. That is manufacturer fit guidance, not a guarantee that the brace will suit every shoe or foot. Read ZAMST’s FAQ.

Adjustability and ease of use
Look for a closure system you can set securely and repeatably. Laces and straps can allow more adjustment than a simple sleeve, but they also take time to position. If you need to retighten a brace during a session, check whether its design makes that practical and whether you can do so without removing your shoe.

Comfort during basketball movements
Fit should feel secure without painful pressure, rubbing or an uncomfortable change in how your shoe sits. Check comfort while walking and moving through basketball actions, not just while standing still. A brace that is too tight, slips or makes the shoe feel unstable is not a good fit; reassess its sizing and placement rather than forcing it.

Basketball-specific examples—not a definitive ranking
These models illustrate different design approaches and have basketball-specific information from their manufacturers. The available evidence does not establish either as the best current brace, and the manufacturer descriptions are not independent comparisons.

A quick way to make your choice
- Decide what kind of support you want. Compare lace-up and semi-rigid options rather than assuming all braces work the same way.
- Check the exact model’s size chart. Use the measurement or sizing method the manufacturer specifies.
- Try it in your basketball shoe. Make sure the shoe still feels secure and comfortable; adjust the laces if the brace’s instructions call for it.
- Move in it before relying on it for play. Confirm that it stays in place and does not create painful pressure or interfere with comfortable movement.
- Reassess if it does not fit. Try a different size or construction rather than assuming a brace that crowds your shoe is suitable.
When an ankle injury needs medical evaluation
An ankle brace is support equipment, not a way to diagnose or treat an acute injury. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine notes that evaluation depends on injury severity and pain location, and difficulty bearing weight is an important finding. A child who is still growing should be evaluated by a physician after an ankle injury because a growth plate may be involved. AOSSM basketball injury guidance.
