What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The right Android texting app depends on who you message and which protection you need. Google Messages is the practical all-rounder when you need carrier SMS/MMS, RCS, and extensive appearance controls. Its end-to-end encryption (E2EE) applies only to eligible RCS conversations in which both people use Google Messages with RCS chats enabled; ordinary SMS/MMS is a different route. Signal is the clearer choice for private app-to-app conversations, but it cannot send SMS or MMS and both participants must use Signal.
Those are not interchangeable “best” choices. First identify whether a message will travel through your carrier or through an internet messaging service, then weigh encryption conditions, recipient requirements, customization, and the carrier, device, region, and version limits that can change what you see.

SMS (short message service) carries ordinary text through your mobile carrier. MMS carries group texts and media such as pictures, also through the carrier. They are broadly compatible with phones that have a mobile number, but they are not the same as an encrypted internet chat. If Google Messages sends an SMS/MMS, the protections and retention practices of the carrier route apply; Google’s RCS end-to-end-encryption promise does not apply to that message.

Carrier messaging is still useful because it reaches people without a shared app or data connection. Its compatibility is also its privacy trade-off: the message follows the carrier path rather than the E2EE conditions described for qualifying RCS chats. A conversation can therefore change protection when it falls back from RCS to SMS/MMS.
RCS
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is an internet-connected carrier messaging route. In Google Messages, the compose bar identifies the route: “RCS message” means the message is being sent through RCS, while “Text message” means it is being sent through SMS/MMS. Google describes TLS protection for RCS when E2EE is unavailable, but TLS and end-to-end encryption are different protections. Google also says queued RCS messages can be temporarily stored and deleted after delivery.
RCS can add richer group chats, media handling, reactions, and other modern chat behavior without requiring every contact to use a separate messaging brand. However, RCS support is not identical everywhere. Carrier participation, region, handset, software version, and account state can all affect whether a chat is available, whether it falls back, and which appearance controls are offered.
App-to-app messaging
Apps such as Signal use their own messaging network. Both people generally need the same app for the private conversation. This can provide a consistent security model, but it does not make the app a drop-in replacement for carrier texting. If a contact is not on the same service, you need another way to reach them.
Quick comparison
| Option | Message routes | When E2EE applies | Recipient requirement | Customization documented in official materials | Main dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Messages | Carrier SMS/MMS and RCS | One-to-one and group chats with other Google Messages users when both people have RCS chats enabled; SMS/MMS is separate | SMS/MMS can reach compatible phone numbers; E2EE RCS requires the stated Google Messages and RCS conditions | Chat colors, themes, per-chat colors and backgrounds, custom emoji or reactions, and expressive effects | RCS availability, carrier, region, device, software version, and whether RCS is enabled |
| Signal | Signal messages and calls; no SMS support in its Android app | Private Signal messaging requires both the user and contact to use Signal | Both participants need Signal for private messaging and calls | The reviewed Signal documentation does not establish a current customization feature set | Both participants must use Signal and have an internet connection |
This is a choice between reach and a controlled private network, not a ranking of every Android messaging app. The official documentation available for this comparison supports a detailed comparison of Google Messages and Signal, but not an exhaustive market league table.
Google Messages: the flexible choice for carrier texting
Google Messages is the better fit when you regularly text people who may not share your app. It can send SMS/MMS through the carrier and use RCS when the conversation, carrier, device, and region support it. That dual-route behavior is its practical advantage: you can keep one inbox for ordinary phone-number texting while gaining richer RCS features where available.
How to tell whether a chat is encrypted
- Open the conversation in Google Messages and look at the compose bar.
- If it says “RCS message,” the message is using RCS. If it says “Text message,” it is using SMS/MMS.
- For Google’s E2EE condition to apply, both participants must use Google Messages and have RCS chats enabled. Google says one-to-one and group chats meeting those conditions are end-to-end encrypted by default.
- Do not infer E2EE from the presence of RCS alone. Google says E2EE is not available for every RCS exchange; when it is unavailable, Google describes TLS protection instead.
This distinction matters when a conversation falls back to a carrier text. A message can move between routes as availability changes, so check the compose-bar wording in the conversation you are about to send. If a sensitive exchange unexpectedly changes to “Text message,” pause and decide whether to wait for RCS, contact the person in Signal, or send only information that is appropriate for carrier texting.

Encryption is not the same as zero data collection. Google says Messages uses contact information to identify who is available to chat. It also collects performance information, crash logs, and diagnostic data for performance, reliability, troubleshooting, and abuse prevention. Some features, including spam detection, require additional data. Google says information collected in Google Messages is not used for advertising.

In practical terms, Google Messages can protect the content of an eligible RCS exchange end to end while still processing account, contact-availability, performance, and safety-related information. If your priority is minimizing the service’s surrounding data collection as well as protecting message content, evaluate those two issues separately. E2EE protects message content in the qualifying exchange; it does not mean the app has no operational data, metadata, diagnostics, or abuse-prevention processing.
Customization you can actually use
Google’s Android product materials list themes, per-chat colors and backgrounds, custom emoji or reactions, and expressive effects. Its Play listing describes custom chat-bubble colors and highlights E2EE between Google Messages users. These controls are useful for distinguishing work, family, and group conversations or for making a chat easier to scan.
Availability is conditional. Google qualifies RCS-dependent features by region and carrier, and market and device availability can vary. A missing color, reaction, or effect does not necessarily indicate a fault; it may reflect the RCS state, your device build, or staged feature availability. Google Play showed the listing as updated on October 12, 2026, but a listing date is not a guarantee that every listed control is enabled for every user.

Customization should therefore be treated as a documented capability rather than a promise that every chat will expose every control. A feature that appears in a product page may be limited to supported markets, devices, or RCS conversations. Check the individual conversation and current app build instead of assuming that a friend’s screen will match yours.
Setting up Google Messages for the strongest available route
- Install or update Google Messages from Google Play, then open the app and complete its setup as your default messaging app if Android requests that choice.
- Open the app’s messaging settings and locate the RCS chats setting. Turn RCS chats on if your carrier and device offer it.
- Start a conversation with another Google Messages user and check the compose-bar label before sending sensitive content. “RCS message” indicates RCS; “Text message” indicates SMS/MMS.
- Ask the other participant to verify that RCS chats is enabled in their Google Messages app. E2EE requires the condition on both sides.
- Use the conversation’s appearance controls for colors, themes, backgrounds, reactions, or effects. If a control is absent, check whether the chat is using RCS and whether your region, carrier, device, and version support it.
These steps improve the odds of using the intended route; they cannot override a carrier, device, region, or software limitation. Updating only your own app may not be enough if the other participant’s phone, carrier, or settings do not support the same RCS state.
Signal: private messaging when both people join
Signal is a different category. Signal’s support documentation says both you and your contact need Signal to communicate privately with messages and calls. It also explicitly says SMS support was removed from the Android app.
What that means in daily use
- Signal is appropriate for a conversation in which everyone can install and use Signal.
- It is not an SMS/MMS client and cannot be used as a fallback for contacts who remain on carrier texting.
- A phone-number text sent outside Signal is not transformed into a Signal message merely because Signal is installed.
- The available Signal documentation does not establish a current set of chat colors, themes, reactions, or effects, so it would be misleading to rank Signal against Google Messages on customization.
Choose Signal for the private app-to-app relationship it creates, not for universal reach. If you need to contact schools, businesses, relatives, or groups that insist on ordinary phone-number texting, keep a carrier-capable app available as well.
Recommended Free Tools
Before moving a sensitive conversation, confirm that the intended contact is actually reachable in Signal rather than assuming that a phone number in your address book is enough. The privacy benefit depends on both participants using the Signal service for that conversation. A carrier SMS sent to the same number remains a separate message route.

Android-to-iPhone RCS encryption: what changed in 2026
On May 11, 2026, Google announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS between Android and iPhone was beginning to roll out in beta. The announcement specified iPhones running iOS 26.5, supported carriers, and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Google said encryption would be enabled by default and rolled out over time for new and existing RCS conversations on devices that support RCS and have E2EE enabled.
That is a dated rollout statement, not a universal guarantee. Check all of the following before assuming an Android-to-iPhone RCS chat is encrypted:
- The iPhone is on iOS 26.5 or a later supported release.
- The carrier participates in the rollout.
- The Android phone supports RCS and is running the latest Google Messages available to it.
- RCS and E2EE are enabled for the conversation.
- The compose bar identifies the conversation as RCS rather than “Text message.”
Google’s Android and Business Communications general manager Elmar Weber described the direction this way: “Google Messages has had end-to-end encrypted messaging between Android devices for years, but we knew we couldn’t stop there.” The beta announcement is encouraging for cross-platform privacy, but staged availability means two users can see different behavior even on the same operating-system versions.
Which app should you choose?
Choose Google Messages when reach comes first
Use Google Messages if you need to text any phone number, including contacts who do not share your preferred app. It is the only option in this comparison that combines carrier SMS/MMS with RCS and documents built-in appearance controls. Treat E2EE as conditional: verify the RCS label and the participant requirements instead of assuming every message in the inbox has the same protection.
Choose Signal when the conversation can move entirely into Signal
Use Signal when both sides can install it and your priority is private app-based communication. Its lack of SMS support is a deliberate boundary, not a setting you can turn on. For people who will not join Signal, you need another route.
Use both when your contacts split between the two worlds
Many Android owners will sensibly keep Google Messages for carrier texting and use Signal for contacts who agree to private messaging there. The important habit is to identify the app and route before sending sensitive material. A message in Google Messages may be SMS/MMS, RCS with E2EE, or RCS without E2EE; a private Signal exchange requires both participants to be in Signal.
Privacy decisions by scenario
Messaging a mixed group: Start with Google Messages if some participants cannot install another app. Before sharing sensitive details, check whether the group is using RCS and whether all participants meet Google’s E2EE conditions. If not, move the sensitive portion to Signal with the people who can join.

Messaging an iPhone user: Do not assume that a green or cross-platform conversation has the same protection as an Android-to-Android RCS chat. As of Google’s May 11, 2026 announcement, E2EE RCS between Android and iPhone was entering a beta rollout with iOS, carrier, device, and version conditions.
Messaging someone who will use Signal: Signal avoids the carrier-versus-RCS ambiguity for that private conversation, provided both people remain in Signal. Keep Google Messages available for contacts who do not participate.

The compose bar says “Text message” when you expected RCS
- Confirm that RCS chats is enabled in your Google Messages settings.
- Check whether the other participant uses Google Messages and has RCS enabled.
- Verify mobile-data or Wi-Fi connectivity; RCS depends on an internet connection.
- Consider carrier, region, device, and version support. Google states that RCS availability varies by region and carrier.
- Do not send sensitive content on the assumption that an SMS/MMS fallback retains RCS E2EE.
RCS is present but encryption is not
RCS alone does not prove E2EE. Google says E2EE is available by default for qualifying Google Messages conversations, but not every RCS exchange. If the conversation does not meet the participant and RCS conditions, treat it as a non-E2EE route and use Signal only if both people can move the conversation there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA theme, reaction, or effect is missing
Check whether the feature is tied to RCS, then check app version, device, region, and carrier availability. Google’s materials explicitly qualify feature availability; a missing control can therefore be an availability difference rather than a malfunction.
You want Signal to text a non-Signal contact
That is not supported in the current Android app. Signal’s support article says SMS support was removed. Send the carrier text through an SMS/MMS-capable app instead, or invite the contact to Signal for a private conversation.
A practical privacy-and-customization checklist
- Identify the recipient. Can they install and use the same app, or must you reach a phone number by carrier text?
- Identify the route. In Google Messages, read the compose-bar label immediately before sending.
- Verify E2EE conditions. For Google Messages, both users need Google Messages with RCS chats enabled; for Signal, both users need Signal.
- Separate content protection from service data. Google’s E2EE claim does not cancel its stated collection of contact availability, performance, crash, diagnostic, and feature-related data.
- Check availability before judging features. Carrier, region, device, and software version can change RCS and customization behavior.
- Use the right app for the right conversation. Keep Google Messages for broad compatibility and use Signal where everyone can participate in its private network.
Frequently overlooked details
Do not treat an app’s presence on your phone as proof that a particular message used that app’s private network. Google Messages can send three materially different routes from one inbox: SMS/MMS, RCS with E2EE when the documented conditions are met, and RCS without E2EE when they are not. Signal, by contrast, requires the conversation to stay inside Signal and does not provide SMS fallback.
Also separate visual customization from privacy. A colorful theme or expressive reaction changes how a conversation looks; it does not change whether the underlying message is SMS/MMS, qualifying RCS, non-E2EE RCS, or Signal. Select the route first, then adjust appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Messages encrypt texts?
It can, but not every text. Google says one-to-one and group chats are end-to-end encrypted by default when both participants use Google Messages with RCS chats enabled. The compose bar says “RCS message” for RCS and “Text message” for SMS/MMS. SMS/MMS is outside that E2EE claim, and Google says E2EE is not available for every RCS exchange.
Best Value
Can Signal send SMS or MMS on Android?
No. Signal’s support documentation says SMS support was removed from its Android app. Both participants need Signal for private Signal messages and calls, so use an SMS/MMS-capable app for contacts who do not use Signal.
Can I customize Google Messages?
Official Google materials list themes, chat colors, per-chat colors and backgrounds, custom emoji or reactions, expressive effects, and custom bubble colors. Availability can vary by RCS status, carrier, region, device, market, and app version.
Are Android-to-iPhone RCS messages encrypted?
Google announced on May 11, 2026 that E2EE RCS between Android and iPhone was beginning a beta rollout. The announcement requires supported carriers, iOS 26.5 on the iPhone, the latest Google Messages on Android, and supported RCS/E2EE conditions. Check your own compose-bar label and device status rather than assuming universal coverage.
Is RCS the same as end-to-end encryption?
No. RCS is a messaging route. Google says qualifying Google Messages conversations receive E2EE, but E2EE is not available for every RCS exchange. When E2EE is unavailable, Google describes TLS protection, which is a different protection.
Should I uninstall Google Messages if I use Signal?
Not necessarily. Signal does not send SMS or MMS, so Google Messages or another carrier-capable app remains useful for contacts who cannot or will not use Signal. Many people use Signal for participating contacts and Google Messages for broader reach.
Why does my friend have a customization option that I do not?
Google qualifies RCS features by region and carrier, and market, device, and software availability can differ. Confirm the app version and RCS state for both users; a missing control may reflect staged or conditional availability rather than a fault.
Does Google Messages collect any data if RCS is encrypted?
Yes, according to Google. It says Messages uses contact information for availability, collects performance data, crash logs, and diagnostics, and may require additional data for features such as spam detection. Google also says information collected in Messages is not used for advertising. E2EE protects qualifying message content but does not mean zero service data collection.
The Bottom Line
Pick Google Messages for reach and customization; pick Signal for private app-to-app conversations. Google Messages can carry SMS/MMS and RCS, but its E2EE applies only under specific participant and RCS conditions. Signal requires both people to use Signal and does not send SMS. If your contacts are split, use both and verify the route before sending anything sensitive.
