Google Play Protect is the minimum protection every Android banking or UPI user should keep enabled. Add a paid app when you want stronger web and scam blocking, privacy monitoring, anti-theft controls or a secure browsing mode. Among the products with current independent results here, Bitdefender Mobile Security is the strongest general paid choice; Kaspersky Premium is a close alternative, while Norton 360 suits people already using its wider security-suite ecosystem.
No security app can guarantee a safe UPI transaction. Your Android version, updates, app source, screen lock, permissions and response to phishing messages still determine whether an attacker can take over an account.

Quick verdict: which Android security app should you use?
Start with Google Play Protect and install Android security updates as soon as they are available. Play Protect is built into certified Android phones, scans apps automatically every day and combines on-device and cloud-based checks. It is an effective baseline, but Google’s documentation does not present it as a complete replacement for every paid suite’s privacy, anti-theft, scam-warning or secure-browser feature.
Recommended Free Tools
If you want one paid recommendation for general Android use, choose Bitdefender Mobile Security for Android. It supports Android 7.0 and later, combines malware and privacy protection with anti-theft tools, includes WearON support and provides a basic VPN allowance of 200 MB per day. In AV-TEST’s May 2025 Android evaluation, it scored the maximum 6/6/6 for protection, performance and usability.
#1 Best Overall
- Android Security & protection
- Daily Virus Database checkup and updates
- Scan Apps and Files
- System Cleaner Integrated
- Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Kaspersky Premium for Android also scored 6/6/6 in that test and is a reasonable alternative for readers who value broad security and privacy controls. Confirm that the product and its required features are available in your country before paying. Norton 360 scored 6/6/5 and may be attractive if you already use its broader security ecosystem, but there is no evidence here of UPI-specific protection.
What “banking protection” has to stop
Malware scanning is only one part of protecting a banking or UPI account. A security product may also need to recognize a fake banking app, block a malicious website, warn about a scam message, prevent credential theft or stop an attacker from interfering with an active banking session.
Fake and modified apps
Criminals copy the name, icon and screenshots of a bank or UPI app, then distribute the copy through a misleading website, an unofficial store or a sideloaded APK. The copy may ask for credentials, one-time codes, accessibility access or screen-reading permissions. Install financial apps from the official Google Play listing or your bank’s own published link, and check the developer name, reviews, update history and requested permissions before opening the app.
Phishing and malicious websites
A text, email or social-media message can lead to a page that imitates a bank sign-in screen or a UPI support portal. A banking-focused product may add malicious-site, phishing or scam warnings in the browser. That protection helps only if you heed the warning; never enter a password, card number, UPI PIN or one-time code into a page reached from an unsolicited message.
Session interception and remote control
More advanced attacks attempt to intercept credentials, manipulate a banking session, obtain remote access or exfiltrate sensitive information. AVLab’s 2026 banking-security test used those outcomes as its criteria. A product that advertises a secure banking browser, protected payment window or anti-remote-access feature may therefore offer more relevant coverage than a scanner that only checks installed files.
Rank #2
- Payment Protection – lets you to shop and bank safely online
- Proactive Anti-Theft – powerful features to help protect your phone, and find it if it goes missing:
- Anti-Phishing – uses the ESET malware database to identify scam websites and messages
- Call Filter – block calls from specified numbers, contacts and unknown numbers
- Antivirus – protection against malware: intercepts threats and cleans them from your device
Account and device recovery
Anti-theft features can help you locate, lock or otherwise manage a lost phone, while privacy tools can identify risky permissions or exposed personal information. These controls do not replace your bank’s fraud alerts, device lock or account-recovery procedures, but they reduce the damage from a lost or compromised handset.
Android security apps compared
| Product | AV-TEST May 2025 result | Documented capabilities | Best suited to | Limits and qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Play Protect | Protection 5.5/6; performance 6/6; usability 5/6 | Daily app scanning, on-device and cloud protection, harmful-app installation prevention | Every Android user as the baseline | Google’s documentation does not describe it as a full privacy, anti-theft, VPN or secure-banking suite |
| Bitdefender Mobile Security for Android | Protection 6/6; performance 6/6; usability 6/6 | Malware and privacy protection, anti-theft, WearON and a 200 MB-per-day basic VPN; Android 7.0+ | Users wanting the broadest documented paid feature set in this comparison | VPN allowance is limited; subscription and regional pricing change over time |
| Kaspersky Premium for Android | Protection 6/6; performance 6/6; usability 6/6 | Broad security and privacy controls | Users who want a highly rated general security suite | Check current regional availability, policy and feature access before purchase |
| Norton 360 | Protection 6/6; performance 6/6; usability 5/6 | Part of a wider security-suite ecosystem | Existing users who prefer one vendor across devices | No UPI-specific protection is established here; usability score was one point below the maximum |
AV-TEST awards up to six points each for protection, performance and usability. Products reaching at least 10 total points qualify for its seal. The scores above are results from default-settings testing of 14 Android security products in May 2025, not a guarantee for a particular bank, UPI app, handset or Android build.

Google Play Protect: the baseline you should not disable
Google says Play Protect automatically scans every Android app every day and works to prevent harmful-app installation. Its developer documentation reports that the service scans 200 billion Android apps daily. Because it is integrated into certified Android devices and the Play Store, it provides coverage even when you do not buy another security app.
Check that Play Protect is active
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then choose Play Protect.
- Tap Scan and wait for the result.
- Open the Play Protect settings and leave Scan apps with Play Protect enabled. If your phone shows Improve harmful app detection, enable that option as well.
Menu names can differ slightly by Android release and manufacturer. If Play Protect reports an app, do not bypass the warning simply because the app appears to be a bank or UPI client. Confirm the listing with the bank, uninstall an unofficial copy and install the legitimate version from the verified store listing.
Keep Android itself current
Android’s security guidance explains that ongoing updates fix possible issues and improve safety features against evolving threats. Check Settings > System > Software update (the exact path varies) and install both the Android security update and Google Play system update when offered. A security app cannot patch a vulnerability in an outdated operating system.

Bitdefender Mobile Security: best-supported paid pick
Bitdefender has the clearest documented combination of capabilities for a general paid recommendation in this comparison. Its Android product supports Android 7.0 and newer, and the vendor lists malware protection, privacy protection, anti-theft functions, WearON integration and a basic VPN capped at 200 MB per day. The vendor also documents a 14-day full trial in its FAQ.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why it stands out
- It achieved 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s May 2025 evaluation.
- Its feature set goes beyond file scanning to include privacy and anti-theft controls.
- The VPN can be useful on untrusted networks, although 200 MB per day is not a replacement for unlimited service.
- A trial lets you check battery impact, notifications and compatibility before committing to a subscription.
How to deploy it for banking use
- Update Android and Play Protect first; a paid app should add protection, not substitute for the baseline.
- Install the official Bitdefender Mobile Security listing, then complete its initial device and account checks.
- Enable web or anti-phishing protection if shown, and turn on anti-theft recovery options while you still have the phone in hand.
- Review privacy findings and permissions. Remove or restrict unrelated apps that can read notifications, draw over other apps or use accessibility services.
- Use the VPN selectively when you need it; remember the documented 200 MB daily allowance.
Kaspersky Premium for Android: a high-scoring alternative
Kaspersky Premium for Android matched Bitdefender’s 6/6/6 AV-TEST result in May 2025. The available product note supports presenting it as an alternative for people who prioritize broad security and privacy controls.
Availability, policies and included features can differ by country and may change. Before purchasing, verify that the Android app, subscription billing and any banking, web or privacy modules you expect are offered in your region. Do not assume that a feature listed for one market is included in another.
Norton 360: useful for an existing security-suite setup
Norton 360 scored 6/6/5 in the same AV-TEST evaluation: maximum protection and performance points, with five of six usability points. It makes the most sense for someone who already uses its wider ecosystem and wants a consistent account across devices.
That score does not establish UPI-specific protection. Select it for the suite-level features you can confirm in your plan, not because the name of a banking app appears in an advertisement. Check how web protection, scam warnings, privacy monitoring and anti-theft controls work on your particular Android version.

What independent tests do—and do not—tell you
AV-TEST
AV-TEST evaluated 14 Android mobile-security products in May 2025 with their default settings. Each product could earn six points for protection, six for performance and six for usability; a total of 10 points or more earns the AV-TEST seal. This makes the results useful for comparing malware detection, device overhead and day-to-day usability, but they are not certifications for every individual bank or UPI transaction.
AV-Comparatives
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 certification required at least 99% malware protection, no more than 10 false positives, less than 8% battery drain and reliable operation of core features. Those thresholds help you understand what a serious mobile-security test measures. They still cannot reproduce every phishing message, fake support call or social-engineering trick a user may encounter.
AVLab banking-security test
AVLab’s 2026 edition ran from 3 November through 23 December 2025 with the latest software versions, default settings and hardened settings. Its outcome criterion asked whether an attack intercepted credentials, manipulated a banking session, gained remote access or exfiltrated sensitive information. Modules catalogued in the test included names such as Safe Money, Safe Pay, Bank Mode, Safe Banking & Browsing and Pay Guard.
Use that type of feature as a selection signal, not as proof that an app protects your exact Indian bank, UPI client or phone firmware. The tests cited here do not certify every regional app or social-engineering scenario.

A practical setup for safer banking and UPI payments
Before installing a financial app
- Install the latest Android and Google Play system updates.
- Run a manual Play Protect scan.
- Open the bank’s or UPI provider’s official website and follow its store link. Do not use an APK sent through a message.
- Compare the developer name, icon, support contact and update history with the provider’s official information.
- Read requested permissions. A payment app may need some device or notification access, but unrelated requests deserve an explanation from the provider.
Before entering credentials or a UPI PIN
- Open the app from your normal home-screen icon rather than from a message link.
- Check the address bar when a web page opens. Leave if the domain, spelling or certificate warning looks wrong.
- Never disclose a UPI PIN, one-time code or password to a caller, chat agent or website claiming to provide a refund.
- Use the security app’s web, scam or secure-banking feature when available, and read its warnings instead of dismissing them.
- Keep the phone locked with a strong device passcode or biometric unlock, and hide sensitive notification previews on the lock screen.
After a suspicious event
- Stop the transaction and disconnect from the suspicious page or remote session.
- Use the bank or UPI provider’s official support number from its website or statement, not a number supplied in the message.
- Change affected credentials from a known-clean device if possible, and ask the bank to block or review the transaction.
- Run Play Protect and the installed security app, remove unknown applications and review accessibility, notification and overlay permissions.
- Preserve the message, sender details and transaction reference for the bank or police report.
How to choose between the free baseline and a paid app
| Your situation | Most sensible choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You install only trusted apps, keep Android current and want basic harmful-app screening | Play Protect | It is built in, scans daily and prevents many harmful installations without another subscription. |
| You frequently follow links, use public Wi-Fi or want anti-theft and privacy tools | Bitdefender Mobile Security | It adds documented web, privacy, anti-theft and VPN-related capabilities with a 6/6/6 independent result. |
| You prefer Kaspersky’s broader control set and it is officially available where you live | Kaspersky Premium | It also scored 6/6/6, but regional availability and policy need checking. |
| You already pay for a multi-device Norton plan | Norton 360 | It can consolidate devices under one ecosystem; its AV-TEST usability score was 5/6. |
Current subscription prices, promotional terms and regional taxes are not fixed in the information available here. Check the purchase screen for your country, renewal price, cancellation terms and the exact Android features included. Do not buy solely for a temporary introductory offer.
Best Value
- Real-Time Virus Protection: Detect and remove malware, spyware, and viruses instantly.
- Junk File Cleaner: Clear unnecessary files to free up valuable storage space.
- Battery Saver: Extend your device’s battery life with efficient power-saving tools.
- Privacy Scanner: Keep your personal data secure with advanced privacy protection features.
- Wi-Fi Security: Detect and avoid unsafe networks to ensure secure online browsing.
Common mistakes that weaken protection
- Running several real-time scanners: overlapping security apps can create duplicate alerts and extra battery use. Keep Play Protect and choose one additional real-time product.
- Disabling warnings to make an app install: a bank’s branding does not override a Play Protect or browser warning. Verify the app with the bank first.
- Assuming a VPN makes payments safe: a VPN can protect network traffic in some situations, but it cannot detect a fake app, recover a disclosed PIN or reverse an authorized transfer.
- Ignoring updates because the security app is current: the operating system, Google components and banking app all need their own updates.
- Treating a perfect laboratory score as a guarantee: AV-TEST measures defined protection, performance and usability scenarios; it does not test every bank, UPI app or human deception tactic.
When a security app causes a problem
A legitimate banking app is flagged
Do not immediately whitelist it. Confirm that you installed the official listing, update both apps, run a second Play Protect scan and contact the security vendor or bank through its official support channel. If the warning persists, use the bank’s web service from a clean browser while the issue is investigated.
The phone becomes slow or the battery drains
Check Android’s battery and background-use screens to identify the responsible app. Remove duplicate security scanners, complete pending updates and review whether continuous VPN or scanning features are running unnecessarily. Do not disable core malware protection merely to hide a warning; first test whether one optional module is responsible.
A paid feature is missing
Confirm that the subscription is active on the correct account, that your Android version meets the requirement and that the feature is sold in your region. For Bitdefender, the documented minimum is Android 7.0, while VPN usage is limited to 200 MB per day on the basic allowance.

For most people, the right order is simple: keep Android updated, leave Google Play Protect enabled, install banking and UPI apps only from verified official listings, and treat every unsolicited payment message as hostile. Add Bitdefender Mobile Security when you want the strongest documented all-round paid package in this comparison. Consider Kaspersky Premium if it is officially available and its privacy controls fit your needs; choose Norton 360 mainly when its wider ecosystem is already part of your setup. Whichever app you select, it is a supplement to careful payment behavior, not a guarantee that every UPI transaction is safe.
