For a child’s first Android phone, start with a current Google Pixel such as the Pixel 10a or a specific Samsung Galaxy A-series model—not a phone marketed exclusively for kids. Both manufacturers describe family-relevant features and extended software support, but neither option is an independently tested winner here. The right choice depends on your budget, carrier, the exact model’s support policy, and whether its parental-control setup works for your family.

These are manufacturer-supported candidates, not ranked test results. No phones were physically tested for this guide, so treat durability and suitability statements as manufacturer claims and check the exact model before buying.

Google Pixel 10a: a Google-supported option
Google promotes the Pixel 10a with family settings, including parental controls and School Time, and advertises a seven-year software-update guarantee. Those features may appeal to households that want a Google-documented child setup flow and a long stated support period. Google announced a starting price of $499 at launch in February 2026; that is historical launch pricing, not a verified current offer. Check Google Store or retailer listings for today’s price, and confirm carrier compatibility and local availability.
Samsung Galaxy A series: a family-marketed alternative
Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy A-series page describes the series as suitable for children and teenagers and states six years of software and security updates. This is a series-level manufacturer statement, not a claim that every A-series model has identical hardware, price, or suitability. Choose a specific model, then verify its update policy, availability, carrier support, and parental-control compatibility.

What to compare before choosing a phone
| Decision | What to check | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Software support | How long OS and security updates are promised, and when that period begins | Google advertises seven years for Pixel 10a; Samsung states six years for Galaxy A series. Confirm the exact model and regional policy. |
| Parental controls | Android version, child-account setup, Family Link features, and parent-device requirements | Google documents account supervision and device controls. Some on-device features require Android 17 or later. |
| Durability | Water and dust rating, screen materials, repair options, and case availability | Google markets Pixel 10a as durable. Drop resistance was not independently tested for this guide. |
| Fit for the child | Size, weight, battery needs, accessibility, and whether a smartphone is appropriate | These depend on the child and household; no universal age cutoff is established here. |
| Total cost | Current handset price, carrier plan, and optional protection accessories | Prices and availability change. Pixel 10a’s $499 figure is its announced February 2026 launch price, not a current quote. |
| Household compatibility | Carrier support, parent’s phone, messaging needs, and account ecosystem | Compatibility varies by model and region; check with the carrier and the relevant Google or Samsung support pages. |
How Android parental controls work
Android controls depend on both the software version and how the child’s account is set up. Google’s help documentation describes on-device parental controls on Android 17 or later, including daily device limits, downtime, individual app limits, blocked apps, web-content filters, and app-store filters. Google says these controls are protected by a parent-set PIN. Check the current requirements for the exact handset rather than assuming every Android phone exposes the same controls.
Family Link can supervise a child’s Google Account and help manage settings across supported devices. Google lists screen-time schedules and limits, app and content controls, Google Play purchase approvals, remote locking, location sharing, and School Time. These are device and account features, not guarantees of safety or a prescribed amount of screen time. Confirm the supported features for the child’s phone and the parent’s device before purchase.

Protect the phone and set expectations
A case and screen protector matched to the exact model are optional ways to protect a child’s phone. Google markets Pixel 10a as durable while acknowledging screen scratches as a concern; neither claim establishes how a particular phone will fare in a drop. Check that accessories fit the model rather than relying on a series name alone.
Parental controls can enforce selected device settings, but the documented features do not establish a guaranteed safety outcome or a universal screen-time rule. Agree on household expectations alongside the technical setup, including when the phone is put away and what the child should do if something online makes them uncomfortable.
What the announced funding figure does—and does not—show
In its June 2026 Android parental-controls announcement, Google said it was increasing its U.S. digital-wellbeing fund to more than $50 million. That is a funding commitment, not evidence that a particular phone or control reduces harm. Google described the purpose of the updates this way: “We designed these updates to provide more control and peace of mind, empowering you to make the best choices for your family’s digital wellbeing.” This is the company’s stated aim, not an independent finding.
