Best Android launchers for replacing the Galaxy Z Fold taskbar

Short answer: You cannot replace Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold taskbar with a third-party launcher today. The taskbar is drawn by One UI Home, so choosing Niagara, Folio, Nova or Lawnchair as the home app removes it. Keep One UI Home if the taskbar, its favorites and Samsung’s app-pair workflow are essential. Choose Niagara Launcher for a foldable-oriented interface and continuity, or Folio Launcher for a persistent, rearrangeable inner-screen dock that functionally substitutes for the taskbar. Nova and Lawnchair remain customization choices, not taskbar replacements.

Why third-party launchers cannot keep the Fold taskbar

On a Galaxy Z Fold, the row of app icons along the bottom of the unfolded display is not a universal Android dock. It is a One UI Home component. Folio describes the relationship plainly: Samsung’s taskbar is part of One UI Home, and when another launcher becomes the home app, Android stops drawing that component.

Samsung support guidance reproduced by Niagara says the taskbar is not supported when a third-party launcher is used and that, under Samsung’s current policy, there are no plans to expose taskbar functionality to third-party launchers. That makes the limitation architectural and policy-based rather than a missing toggle. There is no Niagara, Folio, Nova or Lawnchair setting that restores Samsung’s original bar while that launcher remains the default.

This distinction matters because a launcher can imitate the taskbar’s purpose without integrating with it. A dock, favorites list or gesture-driven app list may give you fast access to applications, but it will not be Samsung’s taskbar, its exact placement, or its built-in app-switching and app-pair behavior.

Launcher comparison at a glance

Launcher Taskbar retained? Foldable layout adaptation Inner-screen dock or access model Cover/inner continuity Gesture and animation considerations Customization and maintenance notes
One UI Home Yes; this is the component that draws Samsung’s taskbar. Native Samsung behavior for the Fold’s two displays. Samsung taskbar with favorites and app-switching behavior. Native One UI handling. Best match for Samsung’s own transitions and gestures. Less independent launcher customization, but the only option when taskbar access is non-negotiable.
Niagara Launcher No. Non-grid interface, adaptive two-section app lists, two-column widget stacks on wide inner screens, dynamic icon scaling and hardware keyboard, mouse and stylus support are documented features. Its app list and widgets replace the need for a conventional dock for many users; it is not Samsung taskbar integration. App continuity is documented, with foldable testing on Galaxy Fold 3- and Fold 4-class devices. Android controls some app-opening behavior; third-party launchers may show less polished One UI animations. Most explicitly foldable-oriented option in this comparison. The documented foldable capabilities are product claims, not independent laboratory results.
Folio Launcher No. Designed around a persistent inner-display dock rather than Samsung’s taskbar. Dock stays on the inner display, holds frequently used apps and can be arranged per page. Use the documented dock model; Samsung taskbar continuity is unavailable. Expect the general third-party launcher animation caveat. Compatibility material is written for version 0.6.7; verify behavior after updates.
Nova Launcher No; Folio’s compatibility note lists it among launchers that lose the One UI taskbar. Primarily a customization choice; fold-specific parity with One UI is not established here. Use Nova’s own home-screen dock and layouts, not Samsung’s taskbar. Do not assume Samsung-style continuity. Third-party animation limitations can apply. Consider it when customization outranks taskbar access. Maintenance details are not established in the cited compatibility material.
Lawnchair No; it is also listed as losing the One UI taskbar. Use its own layout system; Samsung taskbar behavior is not available. Its home-screen dock is a substitute, not an integration. Test both displays yourself before committing. The same Android and One UI animation boundaries may be visible. Choose for its launcher experience rather than for Fold taskbar features. Maintenance details are not stated in the cited compatibility note.

One UI Home: the choice when the taskbar is essential

One UI Home is the only launcher in this set that retains the actual Fold taskbar. It is the practical answer if you rely on a row of persistent favorites at the bottom of the unfolded screen, quick access to recent applications or Samsung’s app-pair workflow.

What you keep

  • The Samsung taskbar on the inner display.
  • Samsung’s own relationship between favorites, recent apps and app switching.
  • One UI’s native handling of the cover and inner screens.
  • The closest match to Samsung’s built-in gestures and transition animations.

The trade-off is that you give up the independent launcher’s layout philosophy and customization controls. If your reason for changing launchers is icon placement, an alternative app list or a different widget system, One UI Home may feel restrictive. But no amount of third-party theming changes the fact that the taskbar belongs to it.

How to return to One UI Home

  1. Open Settings on the Fold.
  2. Open Apps, then choose Choose default apps (the wording can vary slightly by One UI release).
  3. Select Home app and choose One UI Home.
  4. Unfold the phone and wait for the home screen to redraw. The Samsung taskbar should reappear at the bottom of the inner display.

You can also select One UI Home from the launcher-selection prompt that appears after installing or opening another launcher. If the bar does not return immediately, lock and unlock the phone, unfold it again and check the Home app selection; the taskbar cannot appear while another launcher remains the default.

Niagara Launcher: best documented foldable-oriented alternative

Niagara is the strongest third-party choice when the priority is a launcher designed around changing screen sizes rather than preserving Samsung’s bar. Its documented approach replaces a conventional grid with a streamlined, non-grid interface and an adaptive two-section app list. On a wide inner display, Niagara documents two-column widget stacks, dynamic icon scaling and support for a hardware keyboard, mouse and stylus.

Why it suits a Fold

  • Adaptive information density: the two-section list and widget behavior can use the inner screen’s extra width without forcing the cover display into the same layout.
  • Continuity: Niagara documents app continuity across the Fold’s displays, so the home experience can follow the device as you open or close it.
  • Input flexibility: keyboard, mouse and stylus support is useful when the inner screen is used as a small workstation.
  • Dynamic sizing: icons and widgets can scale for the different display proportions.

Niagara says it tested foldable support on Galaxy Fold 3- and Fold 4-class devices. Treat those statements as product-documented capabilities, not as an independent performance or battery test, and confirm behavior on your specific Fold generation and One UI version.

The non-negotiable compromise

Setting Niagara as the home app removes Samsung’s taskbar. Niagara’s own support documentation reproduces Samsung’s position that the feature is unavailable to third-party launchers. Niagara can provide fast app access through its list, widgets and shortcuts, but it cannot draw the Samsung bar or expose Samsung’s taskbar-specific app-pair controls.

Folio Launcher: a persistent inner-screen dock substitute

Folio takes a more conventional route. Its documentation describes a dock that remains on the inner display, stores frequently used applications and can be arranged separately per page. For someone asking for an “inner-screen dock,” this is the closest conceptual replacement in the documented set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Folio does differently

  • The dock is designed to stay visible on the unfolded display rather than disappearing into a scrolling app list.
  • Frequently used apps can be arranged for the page where you need them.
  • The design acknowledges that the inner screen is a distinct workspace, rather than simply enlarging the cover-screen layout.

Folio is still not Samsung taskbar integration. Its compatibility explanation explicitly includes Nova and Lawnchair among launchers that lose One UI’s taskbar, and the same rule applies to Folio. The page describing these capabilities is written for version 0.6.7, so use that version context when evaluating screenshots or instructions and recheck the behavior after installing a newer build.

Folio states that if Samsung ever opens the taskbar to other launchers, it would use that integration; until then, its dock is intentionally presented as a substitute rather than a claim of parity. That distinction prevents a common disappointment: seeing a persistent dock and assuming Samsung’s app-pair and recent-app functions will also be present.

Nova Launcher and Lawnchair: customization-first options

Nova and Lawnchair can still be reasonable choices if your objective is a highly configurable home screen, custom icon arrangement or a familiar Android-style dock. The Fold-specific compatibility note for Folio lists both among launchers that lose the One UI taskbar, so neither should be selected on the expectation of Samsung-bar support.

When a customization launcher makes sense

  • You are willing to trade the taskbar for control over grids, icons, gestures or widgets.
  • Your workflow does not depend on Samsung’s taskbar-based app pairs.
  • You prefer a consistent third-party home-screen model across phones and tablets.
  • You can spend time testing both the cover and inner displays after changing the default launcher.

What to test before committing

Build the exact home screen you use most often, then open and close the Fold repeatedly. Check whether widget positions, icon density and dock placement remain usable on both displays. Launch several applications from the cover screen, unfold while they are open and then close the device again. Because the Samsung taskbar is gone, any quick-access workflow must come from the launcher’s own dock, app list or gestures.

Choosing by priority

If your priority is… Choose… Accept this trade-off
Keeping Samsung’s taskbar, favorites and app-pair workflow One UI Home Less freedom than a dedicated third-party launcher.
A launcher designed around inner/cover-screen changes Niagara Launcher No Samsung taskbar; use Niagara’s list, widgets and shortcuts instead.
A persistent, rearrangeable dock on the inner display Folio Launcher The dock is a functional substitute and is documented in a version 0.6.7 context, not Samsung integration.
Maximum conventional home-screen customization Nova Launcher or Lawnchair Both lose the One UI taskbar and require your own testing for Fold continuity.

How to switch launchers without getting stranded

  1. Record your current setup. Note the One UI Home pages, widget locations, app pairs and the apps you expect to reach from the taskbar. Third-party launchers do not automatically reproduce all of these arrangements.
  2. Install and open the launcher. Use its first-run setup to grant only the permissions it requests and understand which home-screen features it controls.
  3. Set it as the Home app. Go to Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Home app, then select the launcher. On some One UI builds, the same choice appears in Settings > Apps > Default apps.
  4. Test the cover display first. Verify app launching, widgets, gestures and your preferred dock or list.
  5. Test the unfolded display. Check spacing, widget columns, keyboard or stylus input if relevant, and the position of the launcher’s own app-access controls.
  6. Exercise continuity. Open an app on the cover, unfold it, return home, then close the device. Repeat with an app started on the inner display.
  7. Restore One UI Home if necessary. Return to the Home app selector and choose One UI Home. This is the required recovery path when the taskbar or Samsung app-pair workflow is more important than the launcher’s customization.

Animation and gesture limitations on third-party launchers

Changing launchers can affect more than the presence of a dock. Android controls parts of the app-opening animation, and Android Authority reported analysis from Niagara lead developer Max Rumpf that Samsung does not expose the relevant app-closing animation API to third-party launchers. As a result, a third-party launcher may feel less polished than One UI Home when opening and closing applications, even when its static layout looks excellent.

This is a platform boundary, not a guarantee that every transition will look poor. Evaluate the interactions you use repeatedly: swipe up to go home, open an app from the launcher, switch between recent apps, fold and unfold while an app is running, and return to the home screen. If those transitions feel inconsistent, the only way to regain Samsung’s complete animation path is to return to One UI Home.

Update and troubleshooting checklist

The taskbar disappeared after switching launchers

Confirm the default Home app. If it is Niagara, Folio, Nova or Lawnchair, the disappearance is expected. Select One UI Home and redraw the inner display.

The taskbar vanished after a One UI update

Check the Home app selection again and verify that the launcher is current. Major One UI updates can alter compatibility behavior, so retest both displays after each update rather than assuming a previous setup will behave identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The substitute dock is not visible on the inner screen

Open the launcher’s own layout or dock settings, confirm that the inner-screen page is configured, and test with the phone fully unfolded. Folio’s documented dock behavior is tied to its inner-display design; Niagara users should look for the app list and widget-stack experience rather than a Samsung-style bar.

Widgets or icons look wrong when unfolding

Reduce the number of large widgets, check the launcher’s adaptive or scaling options, and test a simpler page on both displays. Niagara documents dynamic icon scaling and wide-screen widget stacks; other launchers may require manual layout adjustments.

App opening or closing feels jarring

Compare the same sequence in One UI Home. If the difference is specifically the closing animation or a gesture transition, it may reflect Android and Samsung APIs that third-party launchers cannot access. Decide whether the visual change is acceptable before rebuilding your entire home screen.

Bottom line for Fold owners

There is no third-party launcher that replaces Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold taskbar. One UI Home is the correct choice when the original taskbar and Samsung’s app-pair workflow matter. Niagara is the most clearly documented foldable-oriented alternative, while Folio offers the clearest persistent inner-screen dock substitute. Nova and Lawnchair are valid customization paths, but they carry the same fundamental taskbar loss. Choose based on which behavior you are prepared to give up, and recheck the result after every major One UI or launcher update.
