A 2026 update says a stack can remember a preferred visible “cover” widget, so the stack can return to the widget you use most rather than opening on an arbitrary item.
Those statements are dated vendor release notes, not a guarantee that every function is in the stable channel today. Smart Launcher’s 2025 migration guidance for Nova users says app shortcuts depend on making Smart Launcher the default home app. If shortcuts appear to do nothing after installation, verify that Android is actually opening Smart Launcher when you press Home; installing an app alone does not replace the current launcher.

4. Test navigation and shortcuts
Press Home repeatedly, swipe between pages, open the app list, and test any app shortcuts you depend on. Smart Launcher’s migration guidance specifically ties shortcuts to being the default home app; the same principle applies generally.
5. Test after a restart and under battery restrictions
Restart the phone and check whether the launcher returns reliably. Then check a widget that updates over time. Keep the roles separate: the launcher controls where a widget sits, while KWGT controls the widget’s visual design and data arrangement. A launcher can support a widget’s placement without being able to edit the widget’s internal design.
Before changing launchers or resetting a phone, create the backup supported by your KWGT edition and confirm that the required fonts, images, and data sources are available. A restored launcher layout cannot recreate assets that were never backed up.
Compatibility, permissions, and common failures
The old launcher keeps appearing
Set the new app as Android’s default home app. If the phone offers a one-time choice, select the option to remember your selection. On manufacturer software, search Settings for “Home app,” “Default apps,” or “Default home app.”

- Place one standard Android widget, one widget that updates frequently, and one widget with a tap action.
- Resize and move them, then check whether the launcher gives you the precision you expected.
- Open and close several apps, return Home, and use your normal navigation gestures.
- Lock and unlock the phone, restart it, and check widget updates again.
- Rotate the device or change display size if you use those modes.
- Confirm that the launcher remains responsive with your normal number of icons and widgets.
- Only then migrate the rest of your pages and apply a final theme.
This process tests your actual phone, Android build, manufacturer skin, and widget providers—the variables that documentation alone cannot standardize.

Choose Smart Launcher if your definition of personalization is exact placement, flexible grids, coordinated colors, and the option to use stacks or different layouts.
