Best Android Keyboard Alternatives for Swipe Typing in 2026

Microsoft SwiftKey is the strongest starting point if adaptive swipe predictions matter most; Grammarly Keyboard is better when grammar and rewriting matter; AnySoftKeyboard suits privacy-minded users who want an open-source project; and Samsung Keyboard remains the most integrated choice on Galaxy phones. Keep Gboard installed as a baseline if you depend on Google services, broad language switching, translation while typing, or its familiar Glide Typing. No current controlled, head-to-head test establishes one keyboard as universally fastest or most accurate, so the best choice depends on your languages, writing habits, privacy requirements, and phone.

Quick comparison

Swipe typing is only one part of a keyboard. The app must recognize the path your finger draws, decide which word you intended, learn your vocabulary, correct mistakes, switch languages reliably, and stay usable in the apps where you write. The table below separates documented features from subjective feel.

Keyboard Best fit Swipe and prediction profile Writing assistance Privacy and integration notes
Microsoft SwiftKey People who want an adaptive, personalized keyboard Its Google Play description says it learns and adapts to your slang, nicknames, and emoji. Recognition and correction feel remain device- and user-dependent. Strong emphasis on next-word prediction and personalization. Microsoft says you can continue without granting permissions, although some features may be limited or unavailable.
Grammarly Keyboard People who want grammar help while typing in many Android apps Swipe behavior should be evaluated on your own phone; the documented differentiator is writing assistance rather than a measured swipe advantage. Grammarly describes AI writing assistance for Android and iOS, including correction and rewriting features. Review the current Android permission and data disclosures before enabling it, particularly for sensitive text.
AnySoftKeyboard Users seeking an open-source, privacy-oriented option Useful when control and language-pack choices matter more than a polished, universally consistent prediction engine. Actual swipe feel depends on the installed language package and settings. Generally a straightforward typing experience rather than a cloud writing coach; verify the features offered by the version and language package you install. Open-source code can improve transparency, but “open source” does not automatically mean zero data collection. Check the project’s current disclosures and requested permissions.
Samsung Keyboard Owners of Samsung Galaxy phones who value system integration Convenient for users already accustomed to Samsung’s layout and language settings. Accuracy is subjective and has no current independent comparison in the supplied evidence. Uses Samsung’s built-in suggestions and correction controls; available options vary by One UI version and region. Usually the least disruptive choice on a Galaxy device because it is integrated with Samsung settings and features.
Gboard A broad-feature baseline and a reference point for alternatives Google Play advertises Glide Typing, voice typing, handwriting, emoji and GIF search, multilingual typing, and translation while typing. Suggestions and correction are integrated with Google’s keyboard features. Gboard Help states that writing-tool input “isn’t shared with Google or any app.” Treat that statement as applying to the described writing-tool input, not as a blanket conclusion about every keyboard feature or diagnostic signal.
Fleksy People who prioritize keyboard customization Customization is the main editorial reason to consider it; test swipe correction yourself rather than assuming a speed lead. Writing tools and prediction should be checked in the current Play listing. Read the current permission and privacy disclosures before use.

Gboard’s Google Play listing showed 10B+ downloads and a 4.5-star rating when it was crawled in September 2026. Those figures are volatile store metadata, not evidence that it is the fastest keyboard, and they should be refreshed before publication or purchase decisions.

What makes one swipe keyboard feel better?

Path recognition

When you slide across letters, the keyboard turns the shape of your gesture into candidate words. The best result is not necessarily the one with the shortest path. A keyboard also has to account for where your finger entered and left, neighboring keys, word frequency, and the language currently active. A change in keyboard height, phone orientation, or hand position can alter the result.

Correction and context

After recognition, the app chooses among plausible words. A name, technical term, slang expression, or recently learned nickname may lose to a more common dictionary word. This is why two people can report different accuracy on the same keyboard. Test with your own vocabulary, not only a sample sentence.

Personalization

SwiftKey explicitly says it learns and adapts to an individual’s slang, nicknames, and emoji. Other keyboards also expose suggestion or personal-dictionary controls, but the amount and location of learning vary. Personalization can improve a keyboard over time while making the initial experience feel less predictable.

Language switching

A swipe path is interpreted against the active language model. Accidentally leaving two similar languages enabled can produce plausible but wrong words. Before judging accuracy, install the exact languages you use and verify the keyboard’s switching gesture or language key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Layout and ergonomics

One-handed mode, key spacing, keyboard height, and number-row choices affect how easily you can draw a clean path. Gboard advertises a one-handed mode and themes. Other keyboards expose different layout controls. A keyboard that is theoretically strong can feel poor if its keys are too small for your phone or your preferred grip.

Keyboard-by-keyboard guidance

Microsoft SwiftKey: best first alternative for adaptive prediction

SwiftKey is the most direct alternative when your main complaint is that a keyboard does not learn how you actually write. Its Google Play description calls it a swipe keyboard that is “always learning and adapting to match your unique way of typing,” including slang, nicknames, and emoji. That positioning makes it a logical trial for people whose messages contain personal names, informal language, or recurring phrases.

Do not interpret “learning” as a guaranteed accuracy ranking. No current controlled comparison supplied for this article measures SwiftKey against Gboard, Grammarly Keyboard, Samsung Keyboard, or AnySoftKeyboard under identical conditions. Give it time to learn, then judge whether corrections decrease in your own messages.

SwiftKey also states that users can continue without granting permissions, although some features may be limited or unavailable. During setup, note which permission is being requested and which feature requires it. Declining an optional permission may preserve basic typing while disabling a connected feature; the exact behavior can change with app updates.

Grammarly Keyboard: best when writing quality matters more than raw swipe speed

Grammarly positions its Android and iOS keyboard as an AI writing assistant that works across apps. Choose it when you want correction and rewriting help while composing messages, notes, documents, or posts, rather than simply replacing one prediction engine with another.

Its primary advantage is writing feedback, not a published swipe benchmark. The supplied evidence contains no reproducible test showing that Grammarly Keyboard recognizes slides faster or more accurately than Gboard or SwiftKey. If your priority is fast movement across the keyboard, test it with your own text and compare the number of manual corrections.

Because a keyboard can see what you type, read Grammarly’s current Android permissions and privacy disclosures before enabling it. Separate the convenience of cross-app assistance from the sensitivity of the text you enter. You can use a different keyboard for passwords, financial information, or confidential work if your device and apps permit that workflow.

AnySoftKeyboard: best for an open-source, privacy-oriented approach

AnySoftKeyboard is a useful candidate when you want an open-source project and more control over the software running at the keyboard layer. Language support is commonly organized around installable language packages, so check that your required language and layout are available before switching.

Open source improves the ability of the community to inspect and discuss code, but it is not a promise that no information ever leaves the device. Review the current project documentation, Play Store disclosures, permissions, and any companion language-package requirements. Also expect a different balance between customization, prediction quality, and convenience than a heavily integrated keyboard.

For swipe typing, test the exact language package you will use. A result from one language cannot be generalized to every package, and there is no current controlled benchmark establishing AnySoftKeyboard as the most accurate private option.

Samsung Keyboard: best for Galaxy-device integration

On a Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Keyboard is often the least disruptive alternative because its settings, language controls, and system behavior are designed around the device’s One UI software. It is a sensible choice if you prefer Samsung’s layout, want fewer third-party components, or rely on features exposed through Samsung’s keyboard settings.

Availability and labels can vary by One UI release and region. Check the keyboard’s current settings for swipe input, predictive text, auto-correction, language switching, toolbar options, and one-handed layout. Do not assume that a control described for one Galaxy model appears identically on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung integration does not prove superior swipe accuracy. Compare it with your current keyboard using the same text, language list, keyboard height, and correction settings.

Gboard: the feature-rich baseline

Gboard remains a useful baseline even if you intend to replace it. Google Play advertises “Glide Typing — Type faster by sliding your finger from letter to letter,” along with voice typing, handwriting, emoji and GIF search, multilingual typing, Google Translate while typing, one-handed mode, and themes. Google also advertises hundreds of language varieties, but you should verify that your specific languages and regional layouts are supported on your device.

Google’s Gboard Help says, “Your input text isn’t shared with Google or any app” for writing-tool input. Read that wording narrowly: it describes the named writing-tool input, not every feature, network request, backup, or diagnostic behavior associated with a keyboard. Use the current privacy controls and Google Play disclosures when making a decision.

Fleksy: a customization-led option

Fleksy belongs on a shortlist when themes, layout adjustments, and a distinctive keyboard experience matter. A 2026 comparison positions it primarily for customization, while positioning SwiftKey for predictive text, Grammarly for writing quality, AnySoftKeyboard for open-source privacy, and Samsung Keyboard for Samsung phones. Those are editorial categories, not laboratory results. Confirm current swipe, language, permission, and writing features in the app’s listing before installing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy: compare disclosures, not slogans

A keyboard is unusually sensitive software because it receives text before an app does. “Private,” “offline,” or “AI” labels are not enough to compare products. Use this checklist for each candidate:

  • Read the current Play Store data-safety section and the developer’s privacy policy.
  • List permissions requested during setup and identify which features depend on each one.
  • Check whether cloud synchronization, personalization, voice input, translation, or writing assistance can be disabled separately.
  • Look for an option to continue with basic typing when optional permissions are declined.
  • Review the keyboard’s network access and account requirements after major updates, because disclosures and features can change.

SwiftKey explicitly says you can continue without granting permissions, with possible feature limitations. Gboard Help provides the narrower writing-tool statement quoted above. AnySoftKeyboard’s open-source status supports inspection but does not replace checking its current release disclosures. These are different kinds of evidence and should not be collapsed into a single “most private” ranking.

Language support and switching checks

Before uninstalling your current keyboard, make a list of every language, regional layout, transliteration mode, and symbol set you use. Then verify each item in the candidate’s current settings. A keyboard that supports a language in principle may still differ in dictionary quality, swipe recognition, punctuation placement, or switching speed.

Run these checks:

  • Switch between your two most-used languages repeatedly without opening settings.
  • Swipe words containing accented characters, apostrophes, and language-specific spellings.
  • Type names and place names that are absent from a generic dictionary.
  • Confirm that numbers, punctuation, emoji search, and voice input are available in the layouts you selected.
  • Test the keyboard in both portrait and landscape orientations if you use both.

Keep only the languages you actually need enabled while evaluating accuracy. Extra languages can make a gesture ambiguous, especially when their layouts share many keys.

  1. Install from Google Play. Search for the exact keyboard name, check the developer identity and current listing, and install the app and any required language packages.
  2. Open the keyboard’s setup screen. Most apps provide an “Enable” or “Get started” button that takes you to Android’s keyboard-management page.
  3. Enable it in system settings. On many phones the path is Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard; Samsung commonly uses Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. Your labels may differ.
  4. Choose the default. Select the new keyboard from the default-keyboard control, then open a text field to confirm it appears.
  5. Configure languages and swipe input. Turn on the languages you need, enable gesture or glide typing if it is a separate switch, and set keyboard height or one-handed mode before judging the feel.
  6. Review permissions individually. Decline optional access when basic typing does not require it. Note which advertised features become unavailable.
  7. Keep a fallback. Leave Gboard or the phone’s original keyboard enabled until you have tested passwords, search, messaging, and accessibility controls.

Never enter a password into an unfamiliar keyboard merely to test it. Use a harmless sample sentence first, and switch back to a trusted keyboard for sensitive fields when appropriate.

A fair 15-minute swipe test

There is no current controlled, head-to-head swipe-speed or accuracy figure for these keyboards. You can still make a useful personal comparison by changing one variable at a time.

  1. Standardize the setup. Use the same phone, orientation, keyboard height, font size, languages, and lighting. Disable voice input and predictive features only if you will disable them on every candidate.
  2. Prepare representative text. Include ordinary words, short and long words, punctuation, numbers, names, slang, and the languages you actually use. A 100-word passage is long enough to expose recurring errors without becoming a typing endurance test.
  3. Perform three passes. Swipe the passage once slowly, once at your normal speed, and once while composing naturally. Record substitutions, missed spaces, unwanted corrections, and words that require tapping instead of swiping.
  4. Test personalization. Add five recurring names or phrases to the personal dictionary where the keyboard permits it, then repeat a short sample. Record whether the additions are recognized and whether unrelated words change.
  5. Check recovery. Deliberately make a bad swipe, use backspace, and choose a suggestion. A keyboard that recovers cleanly may be preferable to one that is slightly better on perfect gestures.
  6. Evaluate non-swipe tasks. Try language switching, punctuation, emoji search, voice typing if you need it, and one-handed use. These features often determine whether you keep a keyboard.

Count errors as observations for your own workflow, not as a universal score. Repeat after several days if personalization is a deciding factor.

Troubleshooting common swipe problems

Swipe input does nothing

Open the keyboard’s settings and confirm that gesture, glide, or swipe typing is enabled. Check that the current layout supports it, then restart the keyboard or phone. If the option is missing, the selected language package or device version may not support the feature.

Words are consistently wrong

Verify the active language, remove unused languages temporarily, and reset or edit the personal dictionary. Check keyboard height and one-handed mode: a cramped layout changes the path your finger draws. If mistakes began after an update, compare the app’s current settings with your previous configuration before clearing data.

Autocorrection changes correct names or slang

Add recurring terms to the personal dictionary, accept the intended suggestion when it appears, or reduce correction aggressiveness if the keyboard offers that control. Test whether prediction improves after several days of normal use rather than judging only the first session.

The keyboard lags or disappears

Restart the phone, update the keyboard and Android system, and check available storage. If the problem occurs only in one app, test another text field to separate an app-specific issue from a keyboard issue. Keep a second keyboard enabled so you can recover access to settings or messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are uncomfortable with permissions

Return to the keyboard’s Android app-permission page and disable access that is not needed for the features you use. If the keyboard cannot provide acceptable basic typing without a permission you will not grant, choose another keyboard rather than accepting a privacy trade-off you do not want.

Which keyboard should you choose?

  • Choose SwiftKey if your priority is a keyboard that adapts to personal slang, names, and emoji.
  • Choose Grammarly Keyboard if correction and rewriting across Android apps are more valuable than a proven swipe-speed advantage.
  • Choose AnySoftKeyboard if open-source transparency and a privacy-oriented approach are central, and you are willing to verify language-package support.
  • Choose Samsung Keyboard if you use a Galaxy phone and want the tightest fit with Samsung’s settings and One UI behavior.
  • Keep Gboard if you rely on its Glide Typing baseline, broad language options, voice and handwriting input, translation while typing, or integrated search features.
  • Try Fleksy if customization is your deciding factor and its current language and permission disclosures meet your requirements.

The practical winner is the keyboard that makes fewer corrections in your languages while meeting your privacy and integration requirements. Install one candidate at a time, preserve a fallback, and use the same short test rather than trusting a universal accuracy claim.
