Best Android File Manager Apps for Local, SD-Card, USB and Cloud Storage (2026 Guide)

Files by Google is the best starting point for most people who need simple local browsing, search, cleanup and SD-card copying. Choose a different manager when your workflow depends on cloud accounts, network shares, dual-pane transfers, extensive archive handling or highly configurable navigation. No single Android file manager is best for every storage location, and published feature lists are not the same as independent tests.

Choose by workflow, not by feature count

Your ideal file manager depends on where your files live and what you do with them. Local phone storage, a microSD card, a USB-C drive, cloud services, network shares and archive files each create different requirements. A simple cleaner can be more useful than a feature-heavy tool if you only need to find downloads and remove large files. Conversely, a dual-pane interface can save time when you regularly copy folders between a phone and a server.

App Best fit What published descriptions emphasize
Files by Google Straightforward local browsing, search, cleanup and SD-card copies Google Help documents browsing, searching, renaming, cleanup actions, and moving or copying files to an SD card; Android 8.0 and newer
Solid Explorer Cloud and network work with side-by-side panes Recent comparisons describe dual-pane navigation and broad cloud and network workflows; confirm the exact provider, protocol and current listing terms
MiXplorer Extensible setups using many storage types Android Authority describes local and external media, LAN, Google Drive, OneDrive and other cloud services, with plugins for added functions
CX File Explorer Storage analysis and finding large files Editorial descriptions emphasize storage analysis and large-file discovery, with cloud or network functions that should be checked in the live listing
Material Files Open-source local, network and physical-media access A 2025 review describes local-network and physical external-storage support but says it does not browse Google Drive
X-plore Technical users who want tree and dual-pane navigation A 2026 comparison lists dual-pane and tree navigation, USB OTG, network protocols, cloud services and archives; inspect current donation or paid details

The table reflects published descriptions, not speed, reliability, security or usability tests. The 2026 iTechGuides comparison explicitly says its ranking is based on feature and fit information from app listings and platform documentation rather than hands-on benchmarks.

Best Android file managers by use case

Files by Google for everyday local storage

Files by Google is the clearest choice when you want to browse folders, search for a filename, rename an item, run cleanup actions or copy and move files to an SD card. Google’s Help documentation states that it supports Android 8.0 and newer. That documented scope makes it a sensible default for phones running a supported version and for users who do not need a server-style file browser.

Use it when your main questions are practical: Where is the downloaded document? Which videos are consuming space? How do I copy pictures to my card? Its simple navigation reduces setup work. Do not interpret Google’s help page as proof that every advanced cloud or network workflow is included; the documented functions center on local browsing, search, cleanup and SD-card operations.

Solid Explorer for dual-pane cloud and network transfers

Solid Explorer is a candidate for people who routinely move files between two locations. Recent comparison articles describe a dual-pane workflow, cloud integrations and network access. Two panes let you keep a source and destination visible while copying, rather than repeatedly navigating back through a single folder tree.

Before installing, identify the exact service you need. A listing that says cloud support may not mean support for every provider, account type or authentication method. Check whether your provider and required network protocol are named in the current Google Play description, then review the current price and any in-app purchase terms for your region. The cited comparisons do not provide controlled tests of transfer speed or reliability.

MiXplorer for extensibility and varied locations

Android Authority’s 2025 review describes MiXplorer as supporting local storage, removable media, LAN locations, Google Drive, OneDrive and other cloud services. It also describes a plugin model that can add functions. This makes MiXplorer attractive when your files are spread across several kinds of storage or when you want to tailor the app beyond a basic folder browser.

Extensibility also increases the number of things to verify. Confirm that the plugin or integration you need is available from the current distribution, works with your Android version and still supports the account or protocol you use. Treat the published capability list as a starting point rather than an assurance that every combination has been tested.

CX File Explorer for storage analysis

CX File Explorer is described as emphasizing storage analysis and discovery of large files. That focus suits someone who wants to understand what is consuming internal storage before deleting or moving anything. Comparison sources also describe cloud or network functions, but the exact services and limits should be checked in the live listing.

Choose CX when analysis and a relatively direct interface matter more than an extensive plugin ecosystem. If you need a particular server protocol, cloud provider or two-panel transfer layout, verify those requirements explicitly instead of assuming that a general cloud label covers them.

Material Files for local, network and physical media without Google Drive

Material Files is described as open source and capable of working with local-network locations and physical external storage. Android Authority’s 2025 review also says it does not browse Google Drive. That distinction is decisive: it can be a good fit for local files, a network location or a USB device, but it is a poor choice if direct Google Drive browsing is essential.

Because this limitation comes from an older editorial review, recheck the current listing before relying on it. Open-source status alone does not guarantee a particular cloud connector, archive behavior or maintenance schedule.

X-plore for a technical, tree-based view

The 2026 comparison lists X-plore with dual-pane and tree navigation, USB OTG, network protocols, cloud services and archive handling. A tree view can make deeply nested folders easier to understand, while dual panes help with repeated transfers. These controls are useful for technical users but may feel crowded if you only need a recent-files view.

Review how the current edition handles donations or paid features, and confirm the exact cloud providers and protocols you require. The comparison describes feature breadth, not a benchmark of transfer reliability or battery use.

How to decide which features you actually need

1. List every storage location

Write down the locations you use in a normal week: internal storage, a microSD card, a USB-C OTG drive, a cloud account, a home computer or NAS, and compressed archives. An app that handles only internal storage may be perfectly adequate if that is your entire workflow. If you need three or more locations, prioritize explicit support for each one over a long generic feature list.

2. Match the cloud provider by name

Cloud support is not universal. MiXplorer is specifically described as integrating Google Drive and OneDrive, along with other cloud services. For other apps, confirm the provider in the current listing. Also check whether the app can upload, download, rename, move and delete files, or merely open a file through Android’s share or document picker.

3. Identify your network protocol

Network shares may use SMB, SFTP, FTP or WebDAV. A manager can advertise network access while supporting only some of these protocols. Note the protocol, host type and authentication method used by your server, then look for that exact combination in the app’s current documentation or listing. Do not infer protocol support from the word cloud.

4. Choose a navigation style

A single-pane layout is usually easier for occasional browsing. Tabs, tree navigation and dual panes are valuable when you compare folders, copy many items or work across local and remote locations. They also add controls that can make a first-time setup less obvious. Pick the interface that matches how often you transfer files, not the one with the longest specification list.

5. Check archives, privacy and root claims

If you regularly receive compressed files, verify the archive formats the app can open or create; the supplied comparisons mention archive handling for some candidates but do not establish a complete format matrix. Treat encryption and root access as separate requirements. A claim that an app can work with protected directories does not override Android’s access restrictions, and root-related behavior depends on the device configuration and permissions you have granted.

6. Verify maintenance and Android compatibility

Check the listing’s supported Android versions, recent update date, permissions and account sign-in method immediately before installation. App capabilities, prices, cloud integrations and update status change. Files by Google has a documented Android 8.0 minimum in Google Help; do not transfer that version requirement to another app without checking its own listing.

Using Files by Google for local browsing and an SD card

The following workflow stays within the functions Google documents. Labels can change slightly between releases, so use the current on-screen wording if it differs.

  1. Open the app and browse. Start in the browsing view, then open the storage category or folder that contains the item. Use search when you know part of the filename instead of manually opening every directory.
  2. Inspect before changing anything. Check the filename, location and file type. For cleanup suggestions, review each item rather than accepting a bulk deletion without checking what will be removed.
  3. Rename when a clear name helps. Select the file and use the rename action. Keep the extension intact unless you deliberately intend to change the file type.
  4. Copy or move to removable storage. Select the files, choose the copy or move action, select the SD-card destination and confirm. The card must be mounted and writable, and the phone must include a card slot that supports the card.
  5. Confirm the result. Open the destination and check that the expected files appear before deleting the originals. For large transfers, keep the phone powered and avoid disconnecting the card during the operation.

Google’s documentation establishes these browsing, search, rename, cleanup and SD-card operations. It does not establish that Files by Google can directly browse every cloud provider or network share, so choose a manager with explicit integrations when those locations are central to your work.

Moving files between phone, cloud and network storage

For a cloud or network transfer, the safe sequence is the same regardless of the app: connect the account or server, open the source, select the destination, transfer a small test file, and verify it before starting a large batch. A dual-pane app can keep both locations visible; a single-pane app may require tabs or repeated back navigation.

  1. Prepare the connection. Sign in to the named cloud provider or enter the server address and protocol. Use a trusted network for credentials and avoid saving passwords on a shared phone.
  2. Test permissions. Confirm that the app can list folders and that you have write permission at the destination. Read-only access can look like a successful connection until a copy operation fails.
  3. Transfer a small file. Copy a document or photograph first. Check its size, filename and ability to open at the destination.
  4. Scale up carefully. Move batches only after the test succeeds. Keep the app open if the service does not support background transfers, and avoid switching networks mid-transfer.
  5. Clean up after verification. Delete the source only when the destination copy is present and usable. Cloud synchronization can take time, so confirm the provider shows the item as uploaded.

These steps are a risk-control method, not a claim that every app supports every operation. Provider-specific limits, authentication methods and background-transfer behavior must be confirmed in the current listing.

Android storage limits you cannot bypass with an app choice

Recent comparisons note that Android’s scoped-storage rules limit access to some directories. No file manager can promise unrestricted access to every folder on every phone. A manager may ask you to choose a folder through Android’s permission interface, may show only media or document locations, or may be unable to modify protected directories.

Root features require a rooted device and appropriate privileges; installing an app that mentions root does not create those privileges. Be especially cautious with instructions that suggest deleting system files. The exact restrictions vary with the device, Android release and manufacturer software, so judge an app by the access it demonstrates on your phone rather than by an unrestricted-access claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an SD card or USB-C OTG drive

Removable storage is optional. A microSD card helps only on phones with a card slot and compatible capacity and file-system support. A USB-C OTG flash drive requires a phone that supports USB host accessories and a connector that fits. The file manager must also be able to see the mounted device.

Before a large copy, connect the card or drive, wait for Android to mount it, and confirm that the manager displays its storage label. If it does not appear, check the adapter, drive format, power requirements and Android notification before blaming the app. Safely eject the device using Android’s storage controls when available; unplugging during a write can corrupt files.

Verification checklist before you install

  • Storage locations: Does the listing name internal storage, SD, USB OTG, cloud and the network location you actually use?
  • Provider match: Is your cloud service named, rather than covered only by a generic cloud claim?
  • Protocol match: Does it support the server protocol you need, such as SMB, SFTP, FTP or WebDAV?
  • Transfer layout: Do you need single-pane navigation, tabs, a tree, or dual panes?
  • Archive needs: Are the archive formats you receive or create explicitly supported?
  • Access boundaries: Does the app explain Android permission prompts and protected-directory limits?
  • Account and privacy: Which permissions and sign-ins are required, and can you avoid saving credentials on shared devices?
  • Maintenance: Is the app compatible with your Android version and recently updated?
  • Cost: Are current prices, donations, advertisements or in-app purchases clear for your region?

Bottom line

Start with Files by Google for ordinary local browsing, cleanup, search and SD-card copying on Android 8.0 or newer. Move to Solid Explorer when side-by-side cloud and network transfers are the priority; consider MiXplorer when extensibility and many storage types matter. CX File Explorer suits storage analysis, Material Files suits local or physical-media workflows where Google Drive is not required, and X-plore suits technical users who want tree and dual-pane controls. Verify every provider, protocol, permission, price and Android-version detail in the current listing, because these capabilities and terms change and none of the cited comparisons tested app performance.
