Best Android Camera Settings: Practical Presets for Every Shooting Situation

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single “best” Android camera setup. The right choices depend on your phone model, camera app, software version, subject and intended use. As a reliable starting point, use the default Photo mode, choose the camera’s full-frame ratio when you want maximum scene coverage, enable a grid or level if it improves composition, tap the important subject to focus, and switch to Night mode for dark scenes. Change resolution, RAW, video format, location tagging and other advanced controls only when you have a specific reason.

Labels and feature availability differ between manufacturers. Google directs non-Pixel owners to separate camera help, and Samsung notes that Galaxy features can vary by model and software version. Treat the Pixel and Galaxy paths below as examples rather than universal Android instructions.

The best starting settings for an Android phone

Start with the camera’s ordinary Photo mode and its automatic processing. Modern phones are designed to make exposure, color and sharpening decisions quickly; changing every control before every picture usually adds friction without improving the result. Adjust a setting when the preview shows a clear problem or when your shooting goal demands something different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you are photographing Recommended starting point Change it when…
Everyday scenes Photo mode, automatic exposure, full available frame, grid optional Autofocus chooses the wrong subject or the composition needs a different crop
People or moving subjects Tap the face or subject; use tracking or focus/exposure lock if your phone provides it The subject moves unpredictably or the background is stealing focus
Dark scenes Night mode or Night Sight, with the phone and subject as still as possible Movement creates ghosting, or the scene is bright enough for ordinary Photo mode
Maximum detail High-resolution mode when supported You need smaller files, faster sharing or better low-light responsiveness
Serious editing RAW plus JPEG when supported and when you will edit the files You need quick sharing or do not have an editing workflow
Video intended for easy sharing A resolution and format your phone, storage and editing apps handle reliably You specifically need HDR, Log, high bitrate or another advanced format

These are adaptable presets, not promises that every Android phone exposes the same controls. Your camera may use different names or omit a feature entirely.

How to change camera settings on an Android phone

Open the Camera app, switch to the mode you want, then look for a gear icon, three-dot menu or settings button. Camera controls may also appear in a pull-down panel beside the shutter. Read the label beside each control before changing it, because the same term can behave differently across phones.

Use the phone’s own help for exact paths

  1. Open the Camera app and select Photo, Video, Portrait or Night mode.
  2. Tap the settings or quick-controls icon. If you do not see one, swipe up or tap the arrow near the viewfinder.
  3. Change one option at a time and take a test frame. This makes it clear which setting changed the result.
  4. Return to the camera’s default settings if a change produces unexpected files, slow captures or compatibility problems.

On Pixel phones, Google’s Camera Help uses labels such as “Full image (4:3),” “Wide crop (16:9),” “Save location,” Full HD video and, on named Pro models, 50 MP and RAW plus JPEG. On Samsung’s Galaxy S26, documented controls include a viewfinder grid, level, tracking autofocus, HEIF photos, video stabilization, Auto FPS and several advanced video formats. Those examples are model-specific; they are not a universal Android menu.

Choose the frame and composition before chasing quality

Photo ratio: full frame versus a wide crop

A full sensor ratio records the largest available image area and gives you more flexibility to crop later. Google’s Pixel example calls this “Full image (4:3).” A 16:9 option such as Pixel’s “Wide crop” is useful when you already know the image belongs in a widescreen presentation, but it generally crops the top and bottom of the sensor view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the ratio for the final use, not because a wider rectangle automatically means a better photograph. A full-frame capture is the safer default for prints, editing and uncertain destinations. Check your phone’s own labels because another manufacturer may use different wording or offer additional ratios.

Gridlines and levels

Turn on a grid or composition guide if it helps you keep horizons level, align architecture or place a subject deliberately. The guides do not alter the image; they only overlay reference lines in the viewfinder. Samsung documents both a level and viewfinder grid option on Galaxy S26. Other phones may call the feature gridlines, composition guides or framing assist.

Use the guide as an aid rather than a rule. Centering a subject can be effective, while placing a face or horizon near a grid intersection often creates more visual balance.

Focus and exposure: let automation work, then take control locally

Tap the important subject

When autofocus selects a background object, tap the face, product or other subject you want sharp. The camera should refocus and usually adjust exposure for that area. This simple action is often more useful than changing a global exposure setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock focus and exposure when the scene demands consistency

Some camera apps let you lock focus and exposure after tapping. Google documents a Lock control on supported Pixel models for a moving subject; Samsung lists tracking autofocus for Galaxy S26. A lock prevents the camera from repeatedly jumping to a nearby background or changing brightness as the subject moves through the frame. If your phone has no lock or tracking option, keep the subject under the focus point and retap when the composition changes.

Exposure adjustments

Use the on-screen brightness slider only after checking the preview. Lower it when bright areas are losing detail; raise it when a face or foreground is too dark. Automatic processing varies by model, so judge the histogram or highlights if your app provides one rather than copying a fixed exposure value from another phone.

Resolution, RAW and image formats

When high resolution helps

High-resolution capture can preserve extra detail for a large crop, a distant subject or a print, but it is a specialized choice. It can produce larger files and may require more processing or light. Google lists 50 MP capture for specific Pro Pixel models: Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. That list does not mean every Pixel or Android phone offers 50 MP.

Use the ordinary resolution for routine snapshots, children, pets and low-light scenes unless you have tested the high-resolution mode on your phone. A larger number of pixels does not by itself guarantee a sharper or cleaner photograph.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAW plus JPEG

RAW files retain more unprocessed image information for editing, while the accompanying JPEG is convenient for viewing and sharing. RAW is worthwhile only if you plan to edit in an application that supports your phone’s RAW format. Files are larger, require deliberate editing and may initially look flatter than the camera’s processed JPEG. Google documents RAW plus JPEG on supported Pixel cameras; availability and controls differ elsewhere.

HEIF and compatibility

Samsung documents HEIF as a space-saving photo format on Galaxy S26. Efficiency is useful when storage is limited, but check that the people, websites and editing programs you share with can open HEIF. JPEG remains the safer compatibility choice when you do not control the receiving workflow.

Best settings for common shooting situations

Everyday photos

  1. Select Photo mode.
  2. Use the full available frame unless you specifically need a wide crop.
  3. Tap the main subject if autofocus is uncertain.
  4. Enable a grid or level if it helps you keep lines straight.
  5. Leave exposure and processing on automatic until the preview shows a reason to intervene.

This setup is fast, flexible and easy to share. Save advanced modes for a defined need rather than leaving them enabled by habit.

Portraits and moving subjects

Tap the face or the part of the subject that must be sharp. If your phone offers tracking autofocus, enable it when the subject moves across the frame. If it offers focus/exposure lock, use it after placing the focus point on the subject and recompose carefully. Keep shutter timing in mind: a sharp focus point cannot prevent motion blur caused by a moving person or a moving camera.

Portrait mode can separate a subject from the background, but its edge detection may struggle with hair, transparent objects or clutter. Use it when the effect suits the scene, not as a requirement for every portrait.

Night photos and other low-light scenes

Use Night mode, Night Sight or your phone’s equivalent when it is available. Keep the phone still throughout the capture and ask the subject to remain still when possible. Google’s Pixel guidance says Night Sight requires both the camera and subject to remain completely still and recommends a tripod or stable stationary surface. A small phone tripod or a solid table is optional but helpful when a handheld shot is difficult.

Samsung says Galaxy Night mode combines 30 images into one clear photo. That is Samsung’s description of its Galaxy implementation, not a general fact about every Android night mode. Other phones may combine a different number of frames or use a different process.

Night mode is best for a still building, landscape or posed person. A walking person, traffic or moving branches can appear blurred or rendered differently because the camera is combining information over time. If the scene is only moderately dim or the subject is moving, ordinary Photo mode may produce a more natural result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-detail landscapes, documents and products

Use the highest-resolution option your phone supports when you need to crop fine detail or make a large image. Stabilize the phone, tap the subject and check the edges for distortion. For a document, even lighting and a parallel camera angle usually matter more than selecting the largest pixel count. RAW is useful for a product or landscape you will color-correct; it is unnecessary for a quick record shot.

Video

Choose video resolution and format according to where the clip will be viewed and edited. Google documents Full HD as a Pixel option for reducing storage use. Samsung lists high-efficiency, high-bitrate, HDR, Log and APV formats on Galaxy S26, along with video stabilization and Auto FPS. These advanced choices are not interchangeable:

  • Full HD: a practical storage-saving choice when 4K detail is unnecessary.
  • High bitrate: can preserve more data but creates larger files and needs compatible editing hardware.
  • HDR: requires a viewing and editing chain that handles HDR correctly; otherwise colors may look wrong.
  • Log: intended for deliberate color grading, not immediate sharing.
  • High-efficiency codecs: save space when supported by your playback and editing apps.
  • Stabilization and Auto FPS: useful when your model provides them, but verify the modes in which they work.

Record a short test clip before an important event. Confirm that your computer, editor and sharing service preserve the selected format.

Storage and privacy choices

Location tags

Location metadata can make a travel library easier to search, but it can also reveal where a photo was taken when the file is shared. Google calls the control Save location; Samsung calls it Location tags on Galaxy S26. Turn it off in the camera settings when the privacy cost outweighs the organizational benefit, especially for images made at home or of children.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managing storage without sacrificing every original

Use Full HD video when that is sufficient, transfer older media to a trusted archive and avoid leaving RAW or high-resolution capture enabled for every shot. Samsung’s HEIF option can reduce photo storage on supported Galaxy devices, but compatibility should be checked before adopting it as your default. The exact space saved depends on the scene, compression and device; no universal file-size gain is established.

Why photos look hazy, distorted or blurred

Haze, halos and glare

Inspect and clean the lens with a soft, clean cloth. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance warns that direct bright light can produce glare, halos or distortion. Change the camera angle, shade the lens without covering it or move to indirect light. A lens protector, fingerprint or condensation can create similar symptoms, so check the glass before changing software settings.

Blur in night mode

Stabilize the phone on a tripod or stationary surface and keep the subject still for the entire capture. If movement is unavoidable, try ordinary Photo mode, improve the available light or take several frames so you can select the sharpest one.

Wrong subject in focus

Tap the intended subject, use tracking or lock focus if your model supports it, and avoid placing high-contrast background objects directly under the focus point. Retap after recomposing if the camera has not retained the original focus.

A simple decision framework for changing a setting

Before enabling an advanced control, ask four questions:

  1. What problem am I solving? More cropping flexibility, less storage, steadier night shots and easier editing require different controls.
  2. Does my phone support the feature? Check the model-specific camera help; a Pixel instruction may not exist on a Galaxy, and vice versa.
  3. Can my workflow handle the result? RAW, HEIF, HDR, Log and high-bitrate video can fail at the sharing or editing stage even when the capture itself succeeds.
  4. Will the subject stay still? Multi-frame night processing benefits from stillness, while moving subjects often need a faster, simpler capture.

This approach avoids treating resolution, file format or night processing as automatic upgrades. The best setting is the one that solves the current shooting problem without creating a larger workflow problem.

Quick checklist before you press the shutter

  • Is the lens clean and free of condensation?
  • Is the camera in the mode intended for this scene?
  • Did you tap the subject that must be sharp?
  • Is the ratio appropriate for the final destination?
  • Would a grid or level improve alignment?
  • For Night mode, can both the phone and subject remain still?
  • Will the selected resolution and format fit available storage and your editing or sharing apps?
  • Are location tags appropriate for this image?

Frequently asked questions

What settings should I use for night photos?

Use Night mode or Night Sight when available, stabilize the phone and keep the subject still. A tripod or stable surface is optional but recommended by Google for Pixel Night Sight. If the subject is moving, ordinary Photo mode may avoid the ghosting that multi-frame night processing can create.

How do I change camera settings on my Android phone?

Open Camera, choose the shooting mode, then tap the gear, three-dot menu or quick-controls button. The exact path and labels depend on the manufacturer, model and software version, so use the phone’s own camera help for a precise route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I always use the highest resolution?

No. High resolution is useful for large crops and prints but can increase file size and processing demands. Use it for a defined detail requirement; keep the normal Photo setting for routine images and many low-light scenes.

Is RAW better than JPEG?

RAW provides more editing latitude, while JPEG is immediately processed and easier to share. RAW is better only when you intend to edit it and your software supports the file. On supported Pixel devices, Google documents a RAW plus JPEG option.

Why are my night photos blurry?

Night modes combine information over time, so movement from your hands, the subject or the scene can blur the result. Hold the phone against a stable surface or use a tripod, keep the subject still and try ordinary Photo mode when motion cannot be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Android phones all have the same camera settings?

No. Camera labels, menu paths and features vary by manufacturer, model and software version. Pixel and Galaxy instructions should be treated as model-specific examples.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I leave location tagging on?

Only if the organizational benefit is worth revealing where the image was taken. Camera apps commonly provide a setting to disable location metadata.
