There is no universal best head unit—the exact year, make, model, trim, factory audio setup, and country can change what fits.
Check Android Auto compatibility first
Android Auto needs a compatible phone, a compatible car display or aftermarket stereo, and a supported connection method. Google’s compatibility information lists aftermarket stereo makers and directs drivers to check their vehicle, stereo, and phone.

Google currently lists Android 9.0 or higher for most wired connections. Wireless Android Auto requires Android 11.0 or higher, as do select newer vehicles; the phone and receiver must also support wireless use. Check Google’s requirements and the exact receiver’s documentation before buying, since support can vary and specifications may change.

Choose the receiver format around the dashboard
Do not assume that matching the visible opening is enough. Check the opening format and the space behind it, along with nearby vents, switches, wiring, and the position of the screen once installed. A large display may fit the opening but still interfere with controls or the driver’s view.

Conventional in-dash receiver
A conventional receiver places its screen within the dashboard opening. Confirm both the opening dimensions and the depth available behind the dash against the vehicle-specific fitment information for the receiver.
Single-DIN chassis with a floating screen
A floating-display receiver can be an option when a conventional double-DIN body is unsuitable. For example, Sony describes the XAV-AX8100 as an 8.95-inch (22.7 cm) adjustable display on a single-DIN chassis. The screen’s adjustability does not guarantee fit: check its position against the dash, controls, and sightlines. Sony specifically advises ensuring the unit does not obstruct the driver’s field of vision in its product documentation.

Verify wired or wireless support for the exact model
Do not infer connection support from a brand or product family. Sony says the XAV-AX8100 uses wired Android Auto over USB, while its XAV-AX6000 specifications describe wireless availability as dependent on country or region. The XAV-AX6000 is listed with a 6.95-inch display and compact rear chassis. These are examples of differing specifications, not a ranking or a guarantee either will fit your car. Check the manufacturer’s page for the exact model sold in your country: XAV-AX8100 and XAV-AX6000.
Wired Android Auto avoids relying on a receiver’s wireless feature, but requires a USB connection. If wireless operation is important, verify it for both your phone and the regional version of the receiver. Also check where the USB port is located and whether that placement works for your installation.

Compare the features that matter to your setup
Once fit and connection are plausible, compare the individual receiver specifications against the way you use the car. Feature sets differ by model; do not assume a feature from a product family name or display size.
- Screen and controls: Check screen size, touch operation, physical controls, and adjustability. For a floating display, consider whether it can be positioned without blocking sightlines or nearby controls.
- Factory features: Confirm whether the installation can retain steering-wheel controls, a factory amplifier, a backup camera, or other equipment you rely on.
- Inputs and outputs: Check for a rear-camera input, USB placement, amplifier outputs, or a disc drive only if you need them.
- Rear chassis: A compact rear chassis may help in a constrained dash, but vehicle-specific clearance still needs confirmation.
Confirm the installation parts and fit for your car
A wiring harness connects the vehicle’s electrical system to the new receiver. Depending on the car and the features to retain, installation may also require a vehicle-specific dash kit or an interface for steering-wheel controls. Do not order generic parts on the assumption that they fit every older car. The available installation-parts guidance explains the role of these components, but it does not establish which parts fit an unspecified vehicle.

Before ordering, use a vehicle-specific fitment catalog or consult a qualified installer with your car’s year, make, model, trim, country, and factory audio configuration. Ask them to check:
- Opening format and the receiver’s depth behind the dashboard.
- Floating-screen position, nearby switches and vents, and the driver’s view.
- Harness and antenna connections, plus any required dash trim or interface modules.
- Whether steering-wheel controls, factory amplification, and the existing camera can be retained.
Without those vehicle details, no specific receiver, harness, dash kit, or interface can be confirmed as a match.

- Check the phone: Find its Android version and decide whether wired or wireless Android Auto is required.
- Check the car: Gather the year, make, model, trim, country, and factory audio details.
- Check candidate receivers: Confirm the exact model’s connection mode, chassis dimensions, screen movement, and desired inputs in its manufacturer documentation.
- Check installation fitment: Verify the receiver and necessary harness, dash kit, and control interfaces for the specific vehicle before purchase.
- Recheck regional specifications: Wireless support, features, and availability may differ by country or model version.
Google says Android Auto works with over 500 vehicle models on its compatibility page, but that figure is not a count of cars that need an aftermarket unit; use the current compatibility listings to check your own vehicle.
