Start with Google Messages’ built-in Spam Protection and Scam Detection. They screen SMS, MMS and RCS conversations on the device, let you report or block senders, and require no extra app or subscription. Choose Truecaller if you also want caller ID and call-spam filtering, or RoboKiller if you are willing to use a dedicated SMS app. Hiya is primarily a call-screening tool, while ScamShield is a strong option where your country or carrier supports it.

No blocker catches every scam. Treat unexpected links, attachments, login requests and payment demands as suspicious even when a message reaches your inbox.

Google Messages: the best first step for most people

Google Messages is the practical starting point because it is already installed on many Android phones and does not ask you to hand message access to another company. Its standard Spam Protection uses machine-learning models operating on the device to recognize known spam patterns. When a message contains a URL, Google may send that URL for a safety check. You can report a conversation as spam, mark it as not spam, block the sender and reverse an incorrect report.

#1 Best Overall
CPR V5000 Call Blocker for Landline Phones - You Can Manually Block All Calls with the Big Red Button - Pre-Programmed with 5,000 Known Nuisance Numbers - Caller ID is Required
  • COMPATIBILITY: For traditional analog landline phones and services from providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Frontier Communications, CenturyLink, and Brightspeed. Not compatible with internet-based or digital phone services (VoIP), including Vonage, Ooma, Xfinity Voice, and Quantum Fiber.
  • IMPORTANT: The V5000 CPR Call Blocker requires Caller ID service and an analog telephone line. Without Caller ID, incoming numbers cannot be identified or blocked. No mains power required - just plug it into your phone line and use.
  • Powerful Blocking, Made Simple: Preloaded with 5,000 verified scam and nuisance numbers, the V5000 starts protecting you right out of the box. And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
  • Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
  • Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.

Turn on Spam Protection

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile picture or account icon, then open Messages settings.
  3. Choose Spam protection.
  4. Turn on Enable spam protection. The exact wording can differ slightly by Android version.
  5. Open the Spam & blocked folder periodically. Review a message before deleting it if you are expecting a delivery, one-time code or account alert.

Use Scam Detection when it appears

Google’s newer Scam Detection warns about suspicious patterns in SMS, MMS and RCS conversations. It is on by default for conversations with people who are not in your contacts, although rollout and language support can differ by device and country. When a warning appears, use the report-and-block action rather than replying. Scam Detection analyzes the message on the device; Google also describes Private AI Compute for enhanced cloud analysis in newer protections.

Correct a false positive

  • Open Messages and go to Spam & blocked.
  • Select the conversation.
  • Tap Not spam to return it to your inbox, or use the conversation menu to unblock the sender.
  • Save legitimate senders in Contacts if you regularly need their messages. This reduces the chance that an expected conversation is treated as an unknown sender.

Where Google Messages can fall short

Filtering is pattern-based, so a new or carefully written scam can get through. Conversely, a legitimate bulk notification can be quarantined. RCS end-to-end encryption can limit network-level inspection, making device-level screening important. Spam Protection is not a guarantee that every message is harmless, and URL verification means the on-device design is not identical for every message.

Truecaller: best when texts and calls need one identity layer

Truecaller is the broadest third-party fit when you want caller ID, call-spam filtering and SMS organization in one app. Its Android product identifies SMS senders and can categorize one-time passwords, transactions, billing notices and delivery updates. The Google Play listing says it can automatically block spam, scam and telemarketing SMS.

CPR V100K Call Blocker for Landline Phones - Requires Caller ID | Block Spam, Scam & Robocalls with One Touch - 100,000 Known Nuisance Numbers Preloaded + Block 10,000 More
  • REDUCE UNWANTED CALLS & TAKE BACK CONTROL – The CPR V100K helps reduce unwanted spam, scam and robocalls on your landline. Known nuisance numbers in the preloaded database are blocked automatically, while new unwanted callers can be blocked at the touch of a button.
  • 100,000 KNOWN NUISANCE NUMBERS PRELOADED – Includes a large database of known nuisance numbers for immediate protection. The database contains reported nuisance numbers from across the USA and is not a list of 100,000 numbers specific to your local area.
  • BLOCK NEW CALLERS WITH ONE TOUCH – Scam callers frequently change or spoof their phone numbers, so no call blocker can stop every unwanted call automatically. When a new unwanted number gets through, simply press the large red BLOCK NOW button to prevent repeat calls from that number. Store up to 10,000 additional numbers.
  • SIMPLE TO USE – NO APP OR SUBSCRIPTION – Connect the V100K to your compatible landline and start taking control of unwanted calls. No app, Wi-Fi, monthly subscription or external power supply required. The large display and tactile BLOCK NOW button make it particularly easy to use.
  • IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION – Requires an active Caller ID service. Designed for compatible traditional analog landline services. Not compatible with many internet-based or digital VoIP telephone services. Please check your telephone service before ordering.

Set up text blocking

  1. Install Truecaller from Google Play and complete the phone-number verification.
  2. Open the app’s Blocking or Spam protection settings.
  3. Enable automatic blocking for spam or scam SMS. Installation alone does not necessarily turn on every blocking rule.
  4. Review permissions for SMS, phone and contacts. Grant only what you need for the features you intend to use.
  5. Check the blocked or spam inbox after the first few days and mark legitimate senders as safe.

Truecaller’s exact behavior, advertisements, subscription tiers and data-safety disclosures vary by region and app version. Read the current Play Store listing before granting permissions or starting a paid plan. Its strongest use case is combined caller identification and text triage, not a promise that every unwanted message will be intercepted.

RoboKiller: a dedicated SMS client for people who want aggressive filtering

RoboKiller is designed as a combined call and text blocker. Its Google Play listing says you can make it the default SMS app and claims it blocks 99% of spam text messages. That percentage is supplied by RoboKiller and has not been independently verified. The listing reported more than five million downloads and about 126,000 reviews at the time of the available record; those figures change continuously.

What switching to RoboKiller involves

  1. Install RoboKiller and open it.
  2. Follow the setup prompt to make it your default SMS app. Android allows only one default app to handle SMS at a time.
  3. Allow the requested SMS and phone permissions if you want text and call blocking.
  4. Use its spam inbox to inspect quarantined messages and restore legitimate conversations.
  5. Start with the free tier. Review which features require a paid plan before subscribing.

The trade-off is control versus convenience: a dedicated client can apply its own filtering consistently, but changing default apps affects how you compose, search and manage texts. Verify that your banking, authentication and delivery messages still arrive before relying on it for time-sensitive codes.

  • Allow any blocked caller to ring through like normal with the Green Invite Button. Double Tap the Green Button to add VIP callers shown in Call History. Note: Caller ID Name and Number Service from your phone company is required for this model to work automatically.

Hiya: useful for calls, not a complete text blocker

Hiya’s Android product focuses on identifying unknown callers, stopping unwanted calls before the phone rings and detecting suspected fraud or deepfake voices. It is not the right choice if your primary goal is to prevent SMS delivery. Hiya’s Android FAQ states: Per Android policy, Hiya is not allowed to prevent users from receiving a text message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still use Hiya alongside Google Messages for call screening, but adding it will not replace a text-filtering solution. Check the current app permissions and regional feature list because carrier bundles and plan options differ.

ScamShield and carrier tools: choose them when your market supports them

Government and carrier systems can see signals that an individual app cannot, but they are usually restricted by country or network. Singapore’s government ScamShield listing describes blocking shady calls, filtering scam SMS and letting users check suspicious messages before clicking. Carrier tools, including T-Mobile Scam Shield, are cited among the phone, carrier and third-party protections available to Android users.

Rank #4

  • Permanent storage of the numbers in the blacklist even power is off or telephone line is plugged out.
  • Battery free: It is line powered, no need battery. And it works with almost all single line telephones. If you find some numbers are blocked but you never mean to, then press Block and check your blacklist, then delete those numbers which like area codes or prefix numbers.

Check these requirements first

  • Your country must offer the service and permit the app to operate on your network.
  • Some features require carrier enrollment, a particular plan or a compatible phone number.
  • RCS and encrypted messaging behavior may differ from ordinary SMS.
  • Read the local privacy notice and data-safety panel before enabling call or message access.

If a supported government or carrier filter is available, it can complement Google Messages rather than replace it. If it is unavailable where you live, use the built-in Android controls instead of sideloading an unverified blocker.

How SMS, MMS and RCS filtering differs

Message type What can be filtered Practical implication
SMS Traditional carrier text messages Most blockers can classify these when they have SMS access or are the default client.
MMS Multimedia messages and group texts Support varies; inspect attachments and sender details even when the text itself looks familiar.
RCS Chat messages sent through Google Messages or another RCS service End-to-end encryption can limit network-level filtering, so device-level warnings and reporting matter.

An app that advertises SMS blocking should not automatically be assumed to inspect every RCS conversation. Confirm support in the current app documentation and your carrier’s RCS configuration.

A reliable workflow for stopping scam messages on Android

  1. Do not interact. Do not tap links, open unexpected attachments, call a number in the message or reply “STOP” unless you independently know the sender is legitimate.
  2. Check the conversation details. Look for an unfamiliar number, a mismatched sender name, urgency, a payment demand or a request for a login code.
  3. Report and block. In Google Messages, long-press or open the conversation menu and choose Report spam and Block. Use the equivalent action in a third-party app.
  4. Preserve evidence when money or identity is involved. Screenshot the message, sender and any transaction reference before deleting it. Contact your bank or service through an address you already trust.
  5. Check your accounts separately. Open the official app or type the known website address yourself; never use the message’s link to “verify” an account.
  6. Review blocked folders. Legitimate one-time passwords and delivery notices can be quarantined, so check before concluding that a service failed to send a code.

Privacy, permissions and false-positive controls

Spam blockers commonly request access to SMS, phone calls, contacts and notification content. Those permissions are necessary for some features but expose sensitive information, including authentication codes and purchase details. Before enabling a third-party service:

  • [ IMPORTANT NOTE 1 ] This product is a call blocker only and does not have a telephone or answering machine function. No phone or answering machine is included in the package. • [ IMPORTANT NOTE 2 ] In BLOCK mode, there will STILL BE some new variant numbers bypassing the database making the phone ring, you NEED to manually set up to block them OR switch to FAMILY mode to let only the numbers in FAMILY LIST through. Please refer to the manual for the CORRECT SETTINGS.

  • Open its current Google Play Data safety section and privacy policy.
  • Ask whether classification occurs on the device, on a company server or through a mixture of both.
  • Check whether the app becomes the default SMS handler and what happens if you revoke that role.
  • Find the spam inbox, unblock control and export or deletion options before you need them.
  • Prefer apps that explain how they handle message content and URLs.

Google says standard Messages detection uses on-device models, but URL verification may involve sending the URL to Google. Its newer Scam Detection announcement describes on-device analysis and Private AI Compute for enhanced cloud analysis. These distinctions matter if you are deciding between a built-in feature and a third-party service.

Troubleshooting when spam still arrives

The filter is enabled, but messages appear in the inbox

  • Confirm that the setting is enabled in the app currently handling your texts.
  • If you installed another SMS app, verify which one is the Android default.
  • Update the app and Google Play system components.
  • Report several examples instead of only deleting them; reporting supplies the app’s abuse signal.

A legitimate message disappeared

  • Open the spam or blocked folder and choose Not spam or Unblock.
  • Save the sender to Contacts and ask the service whether it uses a different short code.
  • For an authentication code, request a new code only after checking that the original was not quarantined.

RCS messages behave differently

Confirm that both parties still have RCS enabled and that the conversation did not fall back to SMS or MMS. Because encryption can limit carrier inspection, rely on the warning and reporting tools in the messaging app itself.

A blocker requests too much access

Decline optional permissions and test whether the feature you need still works. If an app cannot provide useful filtering without broad access to contacts, messages and calls, the built-in Google Messages controls are the lower-exposure alternative.

Which Android blocker should you choose?

  • Choose Google Messages if you want no-cost, built-in protection with on-device analysis and straightforward report/block controls.
  • Choose Truecaller if caller ID and call-spam protection are as important as text filtering, and you accept reviewing permissions, ads and plan terms.
  • Choose RoboKiller if you want a dedicated SMS client, are comfortable changing the default app and will evaluate its free and paid tiers.
  • Choose Hiya only when call screening is your main need; pair it with a text filter for SMS protection.
  • Choose ScamShield or a carrier tool when it is officially supported in your country and on your network.

For most readers, enable Google Messages first, then add a specialized app only for a clear need such as caller identification or a carrier-specific service. Keep reporting new scams, inspect quarantined messages and verify every unexpected request through an independent channel.
