The best setting depends on the noise and the safety context: use the strongest Noise Cancelling or Quiet mode for continuous airplane-engine and HVAC rumble; use high ANC or a moderate Custom setting in an office; and use Aware or transparency outdoors when you need to hear traffic, cyclists, or announcements. Wind needs separate treatment: enable a wind-reduction option such as Wind Block, change modes, and improve the ear seal rather than simply increasing ANC.

Recommended ANC settings at a glance

Start with the setting in this table, then adjust for comfort, conversation and wind. Mode names differ by manufacturer, but the underlying choices are similar.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Environment Starting mode Useful adjustment What to monitor
Airplane cabin Quiet, Noise Cancelling, or the highest cancellation level Run the headphone optimizer and check the seal before takeoff Pressure discomfort, fatigue, leaks around glasses or hair
Office with HVAC or fans High or full ANC Save a Custom, Aware, or middle-awareness mode for conversations Whether speech, desk announcements, or alarms can break through
Street, station, or platform Aware or transparency Keep environmental sound audible; use ANC only where safety allows Vehicles, bicycles, horns, public-address announcements
Windy outdoor walk Aware/transparency with wind reduction, or ANC off if artifacts persist Use Wind Block where available, reseat the headset, and change modes Low-frequency microphone rumble and blocked traffic awareness

There is no official cross-brand measurement that establishes one headphone as universally best for all three environments. Compare cancellation strength, transparency control, wind handling, automatic adaptation, fit, and app controls instead of relying on a single “best ANC” label.

Why the same ANC setting behaves differently in each place

Active noise cancellation works by using microphones to detect outside sound and generating an opposing signal. It is most consistent against low, steady noise, such as an aircraft engine, ventilation system, or computer-room fan. It is less predictable against rapidly changing sounds, nearby voices, wind turbulence, or a poor physical seal.

  • 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
  • Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
  • App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.

That distinction explains the practical settings. Maximum ANC is appropriate when the unwanted sound is continuous and you do not need to hear anyone. A reduced or adaptive setting is better when speech must remain available. Transparency reverses the priority: it deliberately feeds outside sound into your listening path so you can maintain awareness.

ANC is not a safety system. Even with transparency enabled, you remain responsible for checking your surroundings. Treat mode selection as a listening aid, not permission to ignore traffic or announcements.

Best ANC settings on an airplane

Use Quiet or the highest cancellation level

Select Quiet, Noise Cancelling, or the strongest available cancellation level before the cabin becomes noisy. Aircraft cabins are dominated by sustained engine and airflow rumble, the type of sound ANC handles most consistently. Keep the setting steady during cruise rather than repeatedly changing it in response to every small cabin sound.

Some headphones expose a slider; others provide named modes. If the control runs from full cancellation to full transparency, move it toward full cancellation for the engine portion of a flight. Exact slider positions are model-specific, so a percentage shown in one app cannot be transferred reliably to another model.

Run the optimizer before takeoff

If your headphones provide an ANC optimizer, run it before boarding or after a major fit change. Sony describes its Noise Cancelling Optimizer as using an internal microphone to analyze face shape, eyeglasses, hairstyle, and atmospheric-pressure changes, including conditions experienced on an airplane, then tailoring the noise-cancelling function to those conditions.

On supported Sony models, the optimizer can be started in the Sony Sound Connect app or with the headset’s NC/AMBIENT control. Follow the model’s on-screen or spoken prompts and remain still while the measurement runs. Re-run it after changing earbud tips, putting on glasses, moving a thick fringe of hair, or substantially repositioning over-ear cups.

Protect the seal around your ears

A stable seal is as important as the electronic setting. With over-ear headphones, position the cushions evenly around both ears and make sure the glasses arms are not creating a large gap. With earbuds, use the tip size that seals without painful pressure and check that both buds sit at the same depth.

  • Move hair out from under the cushion or earbud tip.
  • Check that a hood, hat, or pillow is not shifting one side.
  • Do not judge the seal by the first few seconds; listen to the engine rumble and compare both ears.
  • If one side sounds louder or the rumble returns when you turn your head, reseat the headset.

Handle pressure sensation and fatigue

Some listeners experience a pressure-like sensation or fatigue with strong ANC even when the headphone is working normally. That feeling is personal comfort guidance, not evidence that the manufacturer’s cancellation system is malfunctioning. Lower cancellation one step, switch briefly to a moderate mode, or take a short listening break if discomfort develops. Keep the cabin’s actual safety announcements audible through the airline’s required channels.

Best ANC settings for an office

Start high for HVAC and equipment noise

Begin with high or full ANC when the problem is steady ventilation, a fan, an air purifier, or computer-room hum. These sounds are similar to the low-frequency rumble ANC is designed to reduce. Give the mode a minute to settle before deciding that it is ineffective.

Save a conversation mode

Office work usually requires a second setting. Create a Custom, Aware, or middle-awareness mode that lets speech through while still reducing the background bed of sound. Bose describes its controls as adjustable between full cancellation and full transparency. Its Aware mode with ActiveSense can automatically turn on noise cancellation when a sudden or loud sound occurs nearby, helping avoid intermittent interruptions while preserving general awareness.

Set transparency only as high as needed to recognize a colleague or desk announcement. A high transparency level may make the room more distracting than necessary; a low level may hide a person speaking from behind you. Because voices, room layout, and headphone tuning vary, there is no universal slider value to copy.

Use a deliberate switching routine

  1. Use high ANC during focused work, reading, or coding when you do not expect interruptions.
  2. Switch to the saved conversation mode before a meeting, reception-desk duty, or period when coworkers need you.
  3. Return to high ANC only after checking that no announcement or person requires your attention.
  4. Keep the mode shortcut easy to reach so you do not leave transparency permanently high just because changing it is inconvenient.

This routine is more reliable than leaving an adaptive mode to guess your priorities all day. Automatic features can react to sudden sound, but they cannot know whether a quiet colleague, a fire alarm, or a private conversation is important to you.

Best ANC settings on a street or in a station

Choose Aware or transparency for safety

Use Aware or transparency whenever you need to hear vehicles, cyclists, horns, crossing signals, station announcements, or people approaching. This is the default for walking near traffic, waiting on a platform, navigating a terminal, and crossing roads. Do not treat a high ANC slider as a substitute for situational awareness.

Even transparency has limits. It can alter the character and direction of sound, and music or podcasts can mask details if played loudly. Keep playback at a level that leaves environmental cues intelligible, pause audio before crossing complex intersections, and look for traffic rather than relying on hearing alone.

Why wind can sound worse with ANC

Wind is not the same as ordinary street noise. Gusts striking the headset’s external microphones can create turbulent pressure changes and low-frequency rumble. The cancellation system may amplify the impression of that rumble while trying to counter it, especially when the microphones are exposed or the headset is moving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On supported Bose headphones, enable Wind Block in a Custom mode. Bose states that “Wind Block reduces noise in windy situations like walking outside.” If your model does not offer a wind control, try Aware with a lower environmental-sound setting, or turn ANC and Ambient Sound off when the artifacts remain intrusive.

Sony’s guidance for persistent wind artifacts is to adjust Sound Connect settings, try turning Noise Cancelling or Ambient Sound off, and reseat the headphones so wind does not strike the microphones directly. The best choice can change with the direction and speed of the wind, so test the setting on a quiet stretch before entering traffic.

Keep the physical fit stable outdoors

  • Seat over-ear cups evenly and keep loose hair from fluttering across microphone openings.
  • For earbuds, use a tip that remains sealed while walking but does not require painful pressure.
  • Secure glasses, hats, and hoods so they do not lift a cup or break the seal.
  • If wind noise appears only on one side, reseat that side before changing every software setting.

ANC optimizers and fit tests: when they matter

An optimizer is useful when the headset supports individualized calibration or when your fit changes frequently. It can account for variables that a fixed factory profile cannot, including the interaction between ear cushions, glasses, hair, face shape, and atmospheric pressure.

The included audio cable allows you to safely store your device in your bag or pocket while listening hands-free.

Run the optimizer in these situations:

  • Before a flight, particularly if the model documents atmospheric-pressure compensation.
  • After replacing earbud tips or changing cushion position.
  • After putting on glasses, a hat, or a hairstyle that changes the seal.
  • When cancellation suddenly becomes uneven between the left and right sides.

An optimizer cannot repair a torn cushion, a blocked microphone, an incorrectly sized ear tip, or wind hitting an exposed microphone. Calibration improves the software profile; it does not replace a sound mechanical seal.

How to set up modes in a companion app

App labels differ, but the workflow is broadly consistent. The following sequence avoids the common mistake of adjusting several controls at once and then not knowing which one helped.

  1. Connect the headphones and open the manufacturer’s companion app.
  2. Open the page labeled Modes, Noise Control, Ambient Sound, or a similar control panel.
  3. Create or select a Custom mode for office conversations or windy outdoor use.
  4. Set the cancellation or transparency control to the intended starting point.
  5. Enable a dedicated wind-reduction option if the model provides one.
  6. Run the fit or ANC optimizer when offered, following the app’s positioning instructions.
  7. Save the mode and assign it to a physical button, touch gesture, or shortcut if available.
  8. Test it in the actual environment, changing one control at a time.

Keep one high-cancellation mode, one conversation mode, and one outdoor-awareness mode. A small, named set is easier to use than many nearly identical presets.

What to compare when choosing ANC headphones

Criterion Why it matters Questions to ask
Cancellation strength Determines how well steady engine, HVAC, and fan noise is reduced Does the model provide a full or high-ANC mode, and can it be adjusted?
Transparency control Controls how naturally and loudly outside sound reaches you Is there an Aware or transparency mode with a usable range?
Wind handling Reduces microphone rumble during outdoor movement Is there Wind Block or a documented recommendation for wind artifacts?
Automatic adaptation Can react to sudden sounds or changing conditions Does the model offer features such as ActiveSense, and can you disable them?
Fit and seal Prevents acoustic leakage that electronics cannot correct Do the cushions or tips remain stable with glasses, hair, and walking?
Optimizer and app controls Allows calibration and quick mode changes Can you run an optimizer, save Custom modes, and assign a shortcut?

No single manufacturer statement establishes a universal winner across airplane, office, and street use. A model with very strong cancellation may still be inconvenient outdoors if its wind handling is poor, while a model with excellent transparency may not provide enough isolation for an engine-heavy cabin.

Concrete example: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones illustrate the type of control set to look for: Quiet, Aware, and Custom modes, ActiveSense behavior in Aware, Wind Block in a Custom mode, and app-based controls. Use Quiet for sustained aircraft or HVAC rumble, Aware when you need environmental sound, and a Custom mode when you want to balance cancellation with conversation or wind reduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These mode names and features are specific to the documented Bose implementation. Other models may use different labels or omit one of the controls, so verify the exact functions for the edition you own before building your routine around them.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“The airplane rumble is still loud.”

  • Confirm that Quiet or the strongest Noise Cancelling mode is active rather than Aware or transparency.
  • Run the optimizer if your model provides one.
  • Reseat both cups or earbuds and check glasses, hair, and cushion gaps.
  • Compare both sides; an imbalance usually indicates fit or hardware blockage rather than an ANC-strength setting.

“Office voices disappear, but I need to hear colleagues.”

  • Switch from full ANC to the saved Custom or middle-awareness mode.
  • Raise transparency gradually until normal speech is clear, then stop before room noise becomes distracting.
  • Use the mode shortcut during known conversation periods instead of leaving transparency on all day.

“Wind noise is worse when I walk.”

  • Enable Wind Block in a supported Bose Custom mode.
  • On Sony models, adjust Sound Connect, try ANC or Ambient Sound off, and reseat the headset.
  • Check whether a hood, hair, or loose fit is directing air at a microphone.
  • Use Aware or no electronic noise control if the wind artifact remains stronger than the original noise.

“Transparency sounds unnatural or too quiet.”

  • Check that the mode is actually Aware or transparency and not a low-level Custom preset.
  • Increase the environmental-sound control gradually.
  • Lower music or podcast volume; transparency cannot make an over-loud program safe.
  • Inspect the fit and microphone openings for obstruction.

“ANC feels uncomfortable.”

  • Lower cancellation one step or use a moderate mode.
  • Take a short listening break.
  • Check clamping pressure and ear-tip size; physical pressure can be mistaken for electronic discomfort.
  • Keep safety-critical announcements and traffic awareness as the priority.

A practical three-mode routine

For most people, three saved modes cover the important cases:

  1. Travel isolation: Quiet or maximum ANC, with the optimizer completed and the seal checked.
  2. Work balance: High ANC for steady equipment noise, with enough transparency in the saved Custom mode to recognize a nearby speaker.
  3. Outdoor awareness: Aware or transparency, with Wind Block or equivalent wind handling enabled when available.

Switch according to the environment rather than chasing a single permanent setting. The correct mode is the one that reduces the noise you do not need while preserving the sound you do.
