The best Ambilight alternative depends on where your picture comes from. For HDMI streamers and consoles, a sync box can match lighting to the signal routed through it. For built-in TV apps or broadcast channels, choose a compatible TV app or a system explicitly designed to capture those sources. Govee’s AI Sync Box Kit 2 is a current HDMI option with manufacturer-claimed gaming passthrough features; Philips Hue offers both a compatible-TV app and HDMI boxes. Signify has also announced a separate Philips Smart Lighting screen-sync system, but its retail availability varies by region and should be confirmed before buying.
Start with the source: what do you want the lights to follow?
Synchronization method matters more than the brand name. An HDMI sync box can only analyze a source whose video travels through that box. If you watch Netflix through your television’s built-in app, that signal does not pass through an external HDMI box. The same issue applies to other native smart-TV apps.

| How you watch | What to look for | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in TV apps | A synchronization app supported by your exact television, or a system specified to work with native TV apps | TV model and regional compatibility matter; an HDMI box alone will not see the app’s video signal |
| Broadcast television | A system that explicitly supports broadcast TV, or a compatible TV app | Do not assume an HDMI box can capture the TV’s internal tuner |
| External streamer, console, or other HDMI source | An HDMI sync box with the source connected through it | The box must support the source’s video formats and the TV’s requirements |
For an HDMI setup, connect the source device to the sync box, then connect the box to the TV. Philips Hue’s product FAQ states: “The HDMI device must be plugged into the Hue sync box with an HDMI cable.” Its FAQ also says the box does not support smart-TV apps and related services because their signal does not pass through HDMI. See the Philips Hue TV-sync guide and the Hue HDMI sync box product information for current compatibility details.
Best documented HDMI option: Govee AI Sync Box Kit 2
Govee’s AI Sync Box Kit 2 is a physical HDMI product for viewers who want lighting to follow connected devices such as an external streamer or console. Govee lists model H6604 for 55–65-inch and 75–85-inch TVs; H6603 is listed for smaller PC monitors. Check the exact model and package contents before ordering, since size variants and included lighting are not interchangeable assumptions.

Gaming formats and limits
Govee’s product listing claims HDMI 2.1, up to 4K at 144Hz and 8K at 60Hz, plus VRR and ALLM support. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Govee cautions that maximum performance depends on the display and that some displays using DSC may not be supported. Verify the compatibility of the specific console or PC, source, box, and TV before relying on a particular resolution or refresh rate.
Price and ecosystem
Govee’s US product listing showed $259.99 when checked in 2026. This is a dated US listing price, not a guaranteed current price or a figure that applies in other markets. The box works with Govee-branded RGBIC lights; confirm whether the listing you are considering includes the lights you need or whether additional compatible lighting is required. The product is an HDMI route, so it will not synchronize built-in TV apps unless you use an external HDMI device for that content.

Philips Hue: choose between a TV app and an HDMI box
Hue has two distinct routes, and the right one depends on the television and source. Its Sync TV app is listed for compatible Samsung and LG televisions; support is model-specific, so confirm the exact TV model and regional availability in Hue’s current guide before buying. For HDMI sources, Hue’s sync box analyzes devices connected through HDMI. That route does not cover native television apps.

Newly announced: Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync
Signify announced Philips Smart Lighting Screen Sync on September 10, 2026, as a proposition distinct from Philips Hue. Signify says its screen-sync product and HDMI 2.1 box can synchronize lighting with native smart-TV apps, broadcast television, and HDMI-connected devices. The announcement makes it a potentially useful option for people whose viewing is split between TV apps and external devices, but it is not the same product as Hue’s Sync TV app or Hue HDMI box.
Because this is a newly announced product, confirm retail status and availability in your country before treating it as a buy-now option. Signify’s announcement describes the intended source coverage; it does not establish that every model, region, or retailer already has a product available.

Camera-based kits: an alternative when HDMI routing is not practical
Camera-based systems use a camera pointed at the screen rather than requiring the video source to pass through an HDMI box. TechRadar’s September 29, 2026 comparison discusses Nanoleaf 4D and Govee Flow Pro as examples of this approach. That gives a useful category-level alternative for people who need to cover content displayed by the TV itself, but current official specifications, exact 2026 kit variants, and comparable performance details are not established here. Do not choose between camera kits on assumed latency, accuracy, price, or superiority without checking the exact product and current manufacturer information.
How to choose and avoid a mismatch
- List your actual sources. Note whether you primarily watch built-in apps, broadcast TV, or external HDMI devices. If you use a mix, identify whether the system explicitly covers every source you care about.
- Check the exact TV and region. For a TV app, verify that your precise model and country are supported. For an HDMI box, check the TV’s resolution and refresh-rate requirements along with the source device’s output.
- Confirm signal routing. For an HDMI system, connect the streamer or console through the box. A box connected only to the TV cannot analyze video from a native app running inside the TV.
- Match the physical kit to the screen. Compare the specified screen-size range and model number with your television or monitor. Confirm which lights and controller are included rather than assuming a box listing is a complete kit.
- Price the whole setup locally. Include any additional compatible lights and controllers, and check current retailer pricing and stock in your market. The Govee figure above is only a US listing observed in 2026.
- For gaming, verify every link in the chain. Compare the console or PC output, sync-box passthrough, TV capabilities, and any format caveats such as Govee’s warning about some DSC displays.
Which alternative fits?
- Mostly use an external streamer or console: an HDMI sync box is the most direct category. Govee’s AI Sync Box Kit 2 is a documented option; Hue is another if you want its compatible-light ecosystem.
- Mostly use the TV’s own apps: check Hue’s compatible-TV Sync app for your exact Samsung or LG model, or wait until Signify’s separate Screen Sync product is actually available in your region. An HDMI box alone is not the answer.
- Need broadcast-TV coverage: look for explicit support for broadcast sources. Signify says its announced Screen Sync system supports broadcast TV; do not infer this from HDMI-box specifications.
- Cannot route sources through a box: consider a camera-based kit, but verify the exact current model and manufacturer specifications before purchase.
No hands-on comparison establishes which system has the best color matching, latency, or overall performance. The reliable buying distinction is source compatibility: choose the system that can see the picture you actually watch, then confirm fit, supported formats, included lights, and local availability.
