TechSpot recorded a 52°C peak VRM hotspot in its flagship comparison, the coolest result reported in that excerpt. The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero is the better fit when premium UEFI controls, diagnostics and connectivity matter most, while the Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master is the balanced high-end option.
Those recommendations are conditional, especially for DDR5. A board’s advertised memory ceiling is an overclocking target, not a promise. Your Ryzen 9000 memory controller, DIMM kit, number of modules, BIOS/AGESA version and QVL support determine whether a setting is actually stable.

Quick recommendation
| Motherboard | Best use | What the evidence shows | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASRock X870E Taichi | Extreme CPU and DDR5 tuning | ASRock lists DDR5 up to 8200+ (OC); TechSpot measured a 52°C peak VRM hotspot. | The cited test did not pass its DDR5-8000 kit, so 8200+ is a vendor target, not a guaranteed result. |
| ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero | Premium firmware, diagnostics and connectivity | Included among TechSpot’s flagship X870E competitors and positioned for extensive UEFI control. | The cited material does not establish a universal memory-frequency advantage. |
| Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master | Balanced high-end build | Tom’s Hardware reported no issues through DDR5-7200; VRM temperatures stayed within specification. | Its DDR5-8000 kit booted but failed stability testing. |
All three are enthusiast-class choices. Select the Taichi for the greatest emphasis on VRM thermal headroom and manual tuning, the Crosshair Hero for board-level controls and diagnostics, or the Aorus Master when you want a strong all-round flagship without optimizing exclusively for extreme memory records.
What AM5 and X870E provide for Ryzen 9000
AMD says Socket AM5 supports Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 9000 processors. That means a Ryzen 9000 chip does not require one specific chipset generation for basic compatibility: an AM5 board can be suitable if its BIOS supports the processor. AMD’s own wording is that you can choose any Socket AM5 board for Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 compatibility.

X870E and X870 add a current platform feature set: DDR5 memory, AMD EXPO memory overclocking, PCIe 5.0, processor overclocking and standardized USB4 support. The “E” designation does not make every board identical. Manufacturers still decide the number of PCIe lanes exposed to slots and M.2 sockets, the way those lanes are shared, networking, Wi-Fi, USB implementation, DIMM layout and firmware features.
Do you need X870E for a Ryzen 9 9950X or Ryzen 7 9800X3D?
No. X870E is not a prerequisite for either processor. Choose it when its additional connectivity, expansion layout or high-end power-delivery design matches your build. If you only need one graphics card, one or two NVMe drives and ordinary EXPO tuning, a less elaborate AM5 board can meet the requirement. Verify CPU support in the exact board’s BIOS notes before assembly, particularly when buying older inventory.
Why board-specific specifications matter
“X870E” identifies the chipset class, not a complete motherboard specification. Two X870E boards can differ in:
- Which M.2 sockets share bandwidth with PCIe slots or disable other connectors.
- How many rear and internal USB ports are available, including USB4 implementations.
- Ethernet speed, Wi-Fi generation and antenna arrangements.
- DIMM trace topology and the QVL depth for high-speed memory kits.
- UEFI options for memory ratios, timings, voltages, curve tuning and diagnostics.
- Physical size, heatsink clearance and the placement of debug displays or buttons.
Read the manual and lane diagram for the exact model rather than assuming that every X870E board offers the same expansion behavior.

ASRock X870E Taichi: the extreme-tuning pick
The Taichi is the leading choice when your priority is sustained manual CPU tuning and high memory-clock experimentation. ASRock lists Ryzen 9000 support and DDR5 ECC and non-ECC unbuffered memory up to 8200+ (OC). That figure is a ceiling in the board specification, not an operating guarantee for every processor and kit.
Why it leads for overclocking
In TechSpot’s flagship comparison, the Taichi recorded a 52°C peak VRM hotspot, the best result reported in that excerpt. Lower VRM temperature under sustained all-core load leaves more thermal margin for a heavily tuned processor and reduces the likelihood that power-delivery heat becomes the limiting factor.
That result should be read as a test observation, not a promise for every case. Cooling, ambient temperature, firmware settings, CPU power limits and the test workload all affect VRM readings. TechSpot specifically notes that BIOS power-limit configuration can materially change measured results, so a review CPU score or temperature should not be treated as a universal board ranking.

The important DDR5 caveat
The same cited comparison did not pass its DDR5-8000 kit on the Taichi. Therefore, the board’s 8200+ (OC) specification demonstrates vendor validation of a target range, not proof that a random Ryzen 9000 processor can run 8200 MT/s with one-click EXPO. Start lower, establish stability, and treat every additional frequency step as an overclocking experiment.

Who should buy it
- Enthusiasts running sustained all-core workloads who value VRM thermal headroom.
- Builders prepared to tune voltages, timings and memory ratios manually.
- Users willing to select a two-DIMM kit from the board’s QVL and update firmware before pushing frequency.
ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero: premium controls and diagnostics
The Crosshair X870E Hero belongs in a different part of the shortlist. Its appeal is the breadth of enthusiast firmware controls, board-level diagnostics and connectivity rather than a proven universal lead in maximum memory frequency. It appeared alongside the Taichi, Aorus Master and other flagship boards in TechSpot’s comparison.
Why its value is firmware and control
Serious tuning often involves repeated boot failures, recovery from an unstable setting and fine adjustments to memory subtimings or CPU curve behavior. A premium board is useful when its UEFI exposes the controls you need and its diagnostic facilities make failed training easier to understand. Those conveniences can save time even when two boards reach the same stable frequency.
AMD’s X870E feature set supplies the underlying DDR5 EXPO and processor-overclocking support. The available evidence does not show that the Hero universally outruns the Taichi or Aorus Master in memory frequency. Results remain dependent on the individual CPU memory controller, DIMM kit, module count and BIOS version.

What testing shows
Tom’s Hardware reported no issues through DDR5-7200 on its test setup. Its DDR5-8000 kit booted, but failed stability testing. That distinction matters: reaching the operating system or completing a short boot is not evidence that a memory overclock is reliable under sustained workloads.
The same review found VRM temperatures within specification. As with every motherboard comparison, those readings belong to that review’s CPU, cooler, workload, ambient conditions and firmware configuration. They are useful for comparison, not a guarantee of an identical temperature in your case.
Who should buy it
- Users targeting dependable high-speed DDR5 without chasing the highest advertised ratio.
- Builders who want robust power delivery and broad features in a balanced layout.
- Anyone comfortable treating DDR5-7200 as a more realistic starting point than an 8000 MT/s promise.
How to choose between the three
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest reported VRM temperature and manual tuning margin | ASRock X870E Taichi | 52°C peak VRM hotspot in the cited TechSpot comparison. |
| UEFI depth, diagnostics and premium board controls | ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero | Its differentiation is control and diagnostic tooling, not a proven universal memory-frequency lead. |
| High-end features with a less specialized tuning focus | Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master | Stable DDR5-7200 in Tom’s Hardware’s setup and VRM temperatures within specification. |
| DDR5-8000 specifically | None is guaranteed | The cited Taichi and Aorus Master tests both failed their DDR5-8000 stability targets. |
When two boards appear equally capable, compare the details that affect your actual build: QVL coverage for the exact kit, DIMM topology, M.2 and PCIe lane sharing, USB4 and networking, Wi-Fi, physical clearance, debug features and current street price. DDR5 tuning on Ryzen 9000: a reliable procedure
Use a matched two-DIMM kit as the baseline. Two modules place less electrical and training stress on the memory controller than four modules and are the practical starting point for high-frequency tuning. Pick a kit listed on the motherboard QVL when possible; QVL inclusion does not guarantee your particular CPU will achieve the rated speed, but it removes one avoidable variable.

- Update the UEFI. Install the board’s current stable BIOS and note the included AGESA version. Memory training behavior can change between firmware releases.
- Install two matched DIMMs in the manual’s recommended slots. On most boards this is the second slot from the CPU socket in each channel, but follow the exact manual rather than relying on a generic slot name.
- Load defaults once. Confirm that the system posts at baseline settings before enabling an overclock.
- Enable the kit’s AMD EXPO profile. EXPO applies the manufacturer’s frequency, primary timings and voltage values. Save, reboot and confirm the operating system reports the intended memory speed.
- Validate EXPO before increasing frequency. Run a repeatable memory-and-CPU stability workload long enough to expose errors, then check event logs and application behavior. A successful boot is only a training pass.
- Change one variable at a time. Raise memory frequency in small steps or tighten one timing group while recording voltage, temperature and test results.
- Keep voltages within the memory and motherboard vendor’s stated limits. More voltage can improve margin but also raises heat and long-term risk; do not copy a value from an unrelated CPU or DIMM kit.
- Re-test after every meaningful change. A setting that survives a short test can still fail during long compilation, rendering, gaming or idle-to-load transitions.
- Save a known-good profile. Store the last stable UEFI profile before attempting a more aggressive ratio so you can recover quickly.
- Stop when the performance gain is not worth the error risk. A lower, fully stable setting is preferable to a higher number that silently corrupts data or crashes under real workloads.
Why DDR5-8000 is especially difficult
At very high data rates, the CPU’s integrated memory controller and the board’s signal path become decisive. The same motherboard can produce different results with two Ryzen 9000 processors or two memory kits. IC characteristics, DIMM rank, module count, trace layout, training firmware and subtimings all interact. The Taichi and Aorus Master test failures at DDR5-8000 demonstrate why a specification or successful boot should not be interpreted as a stability guarantee.
Recovering from a failed memory overclock
- No video or repeated training loops: power off fully, use the board’s clear-CMOS procedure, then boot at defaults. If the board provides a safe-boot or memory-retry control, use the manual’s procedure.
- Boots but crashes in tests: return to the last stable profile, lower the memory ratio, loosen timings or reduce the number of modules before changing several settings at once.
- Intermittent application errors: test each DIMM independently, verify the modules are seated correctly and confirm that the problem disappears at baseline settings. Do not assume a crash is a software fault until memory stability is established.
- EXPO will not train: confirm the kit is installed in the recommended slots, update BIOS, try a lower memory speed manually and check whether the kit appears on the board QVL.
- Instability appears only after adding two more DIMMs: return to a four-DIMM-friendly speed target or use a matched higher-capacity two-DIMM kit. High advertised speeds are generally easier with two modules.
CPU overclocking and VRM evaluation
Ryzen 9000 tuning is not only a question of phase count. Evaluate VRM temperature during the workload you actually run, heatsink contact and airflow around the socket, firmware controls, and the board’s behavior under sustained all-core power. The Taichi’s 52°C hotspot in TechSpot’s comparison is useful because it was measured under load, but it should be compared only with reviews using similar power limits and test conditions.
Curve-based tuning can reduce voltage and temperature while preserving boost behavior, whereas a fixed all-core overclock can trade peak single-thread performance for predictable sustained clocks. The correct approach depends on whether your system is primarily a game machine, a workstation or a mixed-use PC. Whichever method you choose, change one control at a time and validate both single-thread and all-core workloads.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact board model, revision and Ryzen 9000 BIOS support.
- Read the manual’s PCIe and M.2 lane-sharing diagram before selecting storage.
- Check the QVL for your intended two-DIMM DDR5 EXPO kit.
- Verify that the rear I/O, USB4, Ethernet and Wi-Fi features match your peripherals and network.
- Measure case clearance for the board, CPU cooler, graphics card and DIMM heatsinks.
- Plan a way to clear CMOS and recover from failed memory training.
- Set expectations from tested stability rather than the maximum “DDR5 (OC)” number.
Final decision
Choose the ASRock X870E Taichi when maximum tuning headroom and the coolest reported VRM result are your priorities. Choose the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero when premium UEFI controls and diagnostics are worth paying for. Choose the Gigabyte X870E Aorus Master for a balanced flagship platform whose cited testing supports DDR5-7200 without issues.
For any of them, begin with a QVL-matched two-DIMM EXPO kit, current BIOS and conservative validation. Ryzen 9000 memory overclocking is ultimately a property of the complete CPU, DIMMs, firmware and board combination—not a guarantee attached to the chipset name.
