Start with the exact board’s CPU and BIOS support, then compare its PCIe and M.2 layout, lane sharing, ports, networking, case fit, and current local price. Ryzen 9000 desktop processors use the AM5 platform, but a chipset name alone does not tell you what a particular motherboard provides.
What matters most when choosing a Ryzen 9000 motherboard?
AMD lists AM5 compatibility for Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 desktop processors. Before buying, confirm that the exact motherboard model—and, where applicable, its board revision—supports your CPU with the BIOS version installed or available to you. AMD’s AM5 chipset overview explains platform-level capabilities; the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and manual are the places to check a specific SKU.

| B840 | Entry-level platform positioning; AMD’s matrix does not support CPU overclocking for this chipset. | Exact CPU support, storage and expansion options, connectivity, and whether the board meets your requirements. |
These are chipset-level distinctions, not promises that all boards in a family have identical port counts or slot wiring. For example, MSI’s B850 Gaming Pro WiFi6E has a PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot and a PCIe 5.0 M.2 socket, while MSI’s X870E Tomahawk specification lists PCIe 5.0 graphics and M.2 support. Check AMD’s chipset table alongside the manufacturer’s exact-model specification.
How do the named boards compare?
The available model specifications illustrate different build priorities; they do not establish a controlled, four-brand winner or a current price ranking.
Rank #2
- AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
- DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs

| Board | Documented features | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|
| MSI MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi | Four M.2 sockets, four SATA ports, two rear USB 40Gbps Type-C ports, 5G LAN, and Wi-Fi 7; MSI lists AM5 and Ryzen 9000 support. | A connectivity- and expansion-rich option where the storage/USB4 sharing arrangement must be checked. |
| MSI B850 Gaming Pro WiFi6E | PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot and two M.2 sockets, including one PCIe 5.0 x4 socket for Ryzen 9000/7000 processors. | A specification-based option for a build prioritizing one Gen5 SSD and more modest expansion needs; its value depends on current price and requirements. |
| ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo | ASUS lists PCIe 5.0 readiness, four M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 7, and 5Gb Ethernet. | An example of a B850 board with substantial storage and networking features; confirm its full slot and sharing details in the model documentation. |
MSI’s MAG X870E Tomahawk WiFi specification documents an important qualification: M.2_2 shares PCIe 5.0 x4 bandwidth with the rear USB4 ports. With a device installed in M.2_2, both operate at PCIe 5.0 x2 unless BIOS is configured to give M.2_2 x4, which disables the USB4 ports. If you plan to use that M.2 socket and USB4 together, make this tradeoff part of the decision rather than counting the listed features independently.

For the more modest alternative, MSI’s B850 Gaming Pro WiFi6E specifications list a PCIe 4.0 graphics slot alongside a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 socket. That arrangement may be suitable if your priority is a Gen5 SSD rather than a Gen5 graphics slot, but the board’s other I/O and your local price still matter.

What do the four brands’ current examples establish?
ASUS’s AM5 lineup page spans ROG, TUF, and ProArt families and includes the ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WiFi7 Neo example. ASUS also notes that some models share bandwidth between USB4 and a second M.2 slot, while selected boards support x8/x8 operation across two x16 slots. Those configurations are model-specific, so inspect the relevant specification and manual before planning multiple drives or expansion cards.
PC Gamer’s roundup, published January 16, 2026, names the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk its best AMD AM5 gaming motherboard and the ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi its midrange pick. It describes the Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro as capable but too expensive relative to its chosen MSI option. These are that publication’s editorial selections, not a controlled four-brand comparison or proof of today’s best price. Its 2026 gaming motherboard roundup is one perspective to weigh alongside the exact specifications and current offers for boards available where you live.

The available examples do not establish an equivalent, head-to-head product verdict for every brand or model. ASUS’s January 2026 lineup article adds examples of model-specific lane-sharing and slot configurations; MSI’s AM5 chipset lineup provides manufacturer context. Use these pages to identify candidates, not as a substitute for checking the exact board manuals and support lists.
Which type of board fits your build?
One graphics card and one Gen5 SSD
B850 may be sufficient if the board has the right CPU support, M.2 socket, graphics-slot specification, and other ports. Do not assume that a B850 board has a Gen5 graphics slot or USB4: verify each feature in the model specification.

USB4 plus several fast drives
Compare the M.2 sharing notes and manual diagrams before choosing an X870E or X870 board. A board can list both USB4 and multiple M.2 sockets yet make some combinations compete for bandwidth or require a BIOS setting that disables a port.
Multiple expansion cards or high-speed networking
Check the slot wiring and lane allocation, not just the number of full-length slots. Confirm the wired LAN speed and the networking standard you need, as well as any restrictions when more than one slot or socket is populated.
Small case or specialized cooling
Match the board’s form factor and dimensions to the case, then check header count and placement against your fans, pump, and front-panel wiring. A chipset tier does not tell you whether a board fits a particular build.
Quick Recap
What should you check before ordering?
- Confirm CPU support: open the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and revision, find your Ryzen 9000 CPU in its support list, and check the minimum BIOS version. If the board may arrive with an older BIOS, verify whether it can be updated without a supported CPU.
- Check memory compatibility: consult the memory QVL if stability with a particular kit matters, and confirm the board’s memory support details rather than relying on the chipset label.
- Read the manual’s lane-sharing table: note what changes when each M.2 socket, PCIe slot, or USB4 port is populated, including any BIOS settings that disable or reduce another connection.
- Verify physical fit: check board dimensions, case support, cooler and graphics-card clearance, and header placement.
- Compare the live purchase details: check local availability, price, seller, warranty terms, and the precise board revision. Wi-Fi 7 access to the 6GHz band can be subject to local regulation; check regional manufacturer notes and local rules.
