The official alt:V Multiplayer website states, “alt:V has been shut down.” That means a normal provider ranking would be misleading: the reviewed official material does not verify a currently operating alt:V service, compatible public masterlist, or host that can deliver a functioning instance today.
Older alt:V documentation is still useful for understanding what operators historically configured, but its CPU, memory, player-count and networking figures are legacy information—not a recommendation to purchase a server now.

This status changes the answer to the search query. A hosting company may still display an old alt:V page, an unmaintained template, or a generic Grand Theft Auto server offer, but that advertising is not proof that the alt:V server software, authentication, masterlist, client connection process, or community ecosystem remains operational. No provider-level evidence was verified for a usable alt:V service after the official shutdown.

The absence of a verified provider is not proof that no private server, fork, or community experiment exists anywhere. It does mean that there is no substantiated basis for recommending one to a general reader, charging ahead with a long-term contract, or describing an old product page as a working service.
Shutdown status can be volatile if a community project or successor appears. Before acting on any future claim, check the official alt:V site and obtain provider-specific confirmation that the advertised software is authentic, compatible with the intended client, and reachable by real players. Until that evidence exists, there is no defensible “best” host to rank.
Why a current hosting ranking would be misleading
Hosting comparisons normally measure factors such as supported game version, CPU performance under load, memory headroom, DDoS and network protection, backups, restore controls, geographic latency, support quality, panel access, price, and cancellation terms. None of those attributes was established for an active alt:V provider in the available material.

A working alt:V deployment also requires server software that can start, a client that can connect, any required authentication or listing service, compatible resources and modules, and players using a matching game environment. If the official service has shut down, a powerful virtual machine cannot by itself recreate those dependencies.
Even a provider that still has an “alt:V” button in its control panel would need to explain what that button installs. It could point to an obsolete binary, a cached installer, or an unrelated wrapper. The name in a menu is not a software-version guarantee, and a successful machine deployment is not the same as a playable public server.
For that reason, a page naming a “top” provider would create false purchase confidence. The accurate 2026 answer is a status explanation, followed by historical technical context and a method for checking any claimed revival.
What alt:V was
alt:V was described by its official site as a free modification for Grand Theft Auto V. It allowed players to join dedicated servers running custom game modes rather than the standard game experience. Server operators supplied the machine, configured the server, installed resources and modules, and selected how the server appeared to players.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That model explains why hosting was once a meaningful buying decision. Operators had to balance processor speed, memory, network capacity, storage, database services, scripts, and the expected concurrent population. Those decisions applied to the former service; they do not demonstrate that a new deployment can be purchased or joined in 2026.
The word “free” described the modification and, according to the old FAQ, the absence of a slot charge. It did not make the underlying operation costless. A historical operator could still incur machine rental, bandwidth, storage, database, backup, monitoring, administration and domain expenses. None of those costs can be converted into a current plan price while the service status is unresolved.
Legacy hardware figures from the official documentation
The old server-specification page published estimates rather than a guarantee. It described an average mid-tier server as having about eight CPU cores at 3.7 GHz, less than 1.25 GB of RAM, and approximately 300–600 players at peak hours. The same page reported CPU utilization ranging from 6% to 42%, depending on player count and other activity.

The page also proposed a minimum for a performant server supporting more than 100 players: a 3.2 GHz processor, four cores, and 4 GB of RAM. It advised allowing additional memory for databases and other services, while disk requirements depended on the databases and scripts being used.

These numbers are historical documentation. The page warned that requirements could change as features and performance changed, and the official site now says the service has shut down. They should therefore be read as a snapshot of the former platform, not as a 2026 specification sheet.
| Historical figure | What the old documentation said | How to interpret it now |
|---|---|---|
| Average mid-tier CPU | About 8 cores at 3.7 GHz | Legacy profile; not a current purchasing target |
| Average mid-tier memory | Under 1.25 GB RAM | Legacy estimate; databases and services required extra memory |
| Average mid-tier population | Approximately 300–600 players at peak hours | Historical operating estimate, not a present capacity promise |
| Reported CPU utilization | 6%–42%, varying with player count and other factors | Context for old workloads; not an independent benchmark |
| Proposed minimum above 100 players | 3.2 GHz CPU, 4 cores, 4 GB RAM | Former guidance for a performant server, not a 2026 recommendation |
| Storage | Dependent on databases and scripts | No universal capacity can be inferred |
A modern host’s advertised vCPU count is not automatically equivalent to the dedicated-core assumptions behind an older specification. Even if the software were available, virtualization, neighboring workloads, single-thread performance, script behavior, database load, and network quality would affect the result. The published figures alone cannot identify a suitable present-day plan.
The reported 6%–42% CPU range also should not be mistaken for a benchmark that every server could reproduce. It was tied to the player count and other activity observed in the former platform’s context. Scripts, modules, database queries and operating-system overhead could change resource demand, while a provider’s hardware and contention policy could change it again.
Historical port and network behavior
The old documentation listed port 7788 as the default. Without a content delivery network (CDN), it specified both TCP and UDP. When a CDN was used, it specified UDP only. Operators could change the port in server.toml.
That distinction matters when reading old setup guides. A firewall rule copied from a historical tutorial may not match the mode the operator selected, and a changed port would require matching changes in firewall, panel, DNS, and connection instructions. None of this establishes that the old masterlist or connection path is still online.
Port numbers are configuration values, not proof of service identity. Finding UDP or TCP traffic on 7788 would not by itself show that an authentic alt:V server is running. A test must identify the software, version, client compatibility and actual player connection path.
What server.toml historically controlled
The configuration reference showed that server.toml gathered many of the settings an operator would expect in a dedicated-server platform. It included controls for:
- Server name and host binding.
- Listening port and concurrent-player limit.
- Password protection.
- Whether the server announced itself on the masterlist.
- Game mode selection.
- Resources and modules loaded by the server.
- CDN use and related delivery behavior.
- Other server runtime options.
These options are useful when preserving an old configuration or auditing a historical tutorial. They are not evidence that changing a setting can bring the service back. A configuration file cannot replace discontinued binaries, listing infrastructure, client support, or a maintained ecosystem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe settings also show why an operator cannot judge a server solely by its advertised slot count. A concurrent-player limit, the selected game mode, loaded resources and modules, password policy, host binding and CDN mode all affected how the instance behaved. A panel that exposes only a slot field would not reproduce the complete historical administration model.

Operating-system and client limitations recorded in the old FAQ
The official FAQ stated that native Linux server builds existed. It also stated that the client did not have official Linux support. In practical terms, that historically allowed an operator to run the server on a Linux machine while players still needed a supported client environment.
The FAQ also described server slots as free and limited by hardware at the time it was written. “Free” in that historical context referred to slot licensing, not to the cost of a machine, bandwidth, storage, databases, monitoring, backups, or administration. Because both statements belong to an earlier service state, they should not be used to infer current compatibility or pricing.
A host advertising Linux support therefore answers only one narrow question: which operating system can run the machine or server binary. It does not answer whether a player’s client is officially supported, whether the masterlist works, or whether resources and modules remain compatible.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to evaluate a claimed alt:V revival or host listing
If you encounter a new listing despite the official shutdown notice, treat it as an unverified claim. Use this sequence before paying or migrating a community:
- Check the official status first. Confirm whether the official site has published a restart, successor, or compatibility announcement. A reseller’s page is not an authority on the project’s status.
- Request the exact server software and version. Ask whether the host supplies an authentic alt:V build, a community fork, or an unrelated game-server wrapper. The distinction affects client compatibility, updates, resources, and support.
- Verify a real connection path. Obtain a test address and port, connect with the matching client, and confirm that the server actually starts and accepts players. A control panel screenshot or “one-click install” label is not a connection test.
- Confirm listing and authentication behavior. Ask whether the server appears in a maintained masterlist or uses a documented direct-connect process. Find out what happens if that service is unavailable.
- Measure the intended workload. Test with the number of players, scripts, databases, and modules you expect. Historical figures such as 300–600 players cannot substitute for a workload-specific test.
- Inspect network protections. Get written details on address exposure, attack mitigation, bandwidth limits, port filtering, and whether UDP traffic is supported. Do not assume that a generic game-server plan handles the former requirements.
- Check backups and recovery. Confirm backup frequency, retention, download access, restore procedure, and whether databases and resource files are included. A snapshot that cannot be restored independently is not a complete recovery plan.
- Read the commercial terms. Check recurring price, setup fees, renewal changes, cancellation timing, refund rules, data export, and what happens when the provider stops supporting the software.
- Start with a reversible commitment. If all technical checks pass, use the shortest practical term and keep an independent copy of configuration, resources, databases, and logs. Do not prepay for a long period based only on a marketing claim.
This process does not establish that any current host passes. It protects you from confusing an archived product page with a working service.
Ask the provider to identify who maintains the software, where updates are published, and how compatibility problems are handled. A vague promise of “support” may mean only that someone can reboot the virtual machine. Software-aware support should be able to discuss the exact build, resources, modules, connection method and failure procedure.
What a future comparison would need to measure
If an official revival produced several active providers, a meaningful comparison would need consistent tests and clearly stated conditions. At minimum, each candidate should be compared on:
| Category | Questions a future review should answer |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Which server and client versions are supported? Are resources and modules maintained? |
| Performance | What CPU allocation, memory limit, storage type, and contention policy apply? How does the instance behave at the target player count? |
| Networking | Are required TCP or UDP paths open? What locations, bandwidth limits, latency measurements, and attack protections are provided? |
| Administration | Can operators edit configuration, manage resources, view logs, restart safely, and access files without vendor intervention? |
| Reliability | What uptime history, maintenance notices, backup schedule, restore test, and incident process are documented? |
| Support | Does support understand the revived software, or does it only provide generic machine assistance? |
| Total cost | What is the recurring charge after any introductory period, and are storage, databases, backups, IP addresses, or traffic billed separately? |
| Exit terms | Can you export data and cancel without losing access immediately? How are refunds and abandoned instances handled? |
Without verified answers to these questions, a star rating or “best host” label would be opinion rather than evidence. The comparison should also distinguish a dedicated physical core from a shared vCPU, state the test location, disclose the player and script workload, and report whether the result came from a live connection or a provider assertion. Those controls prevent an attractive specification from being treated as a universal result.
Why no hardware or marketplace product is recommended
Buying dedicated server hardware, networking equipment, replacement components, or alt:V books and manuals would not answer the immediate 2026 question. The official material names no specific product, and a generic machine cannot restore discontinued server binaries, client support, authentication or listing services.
That is why this article does not attach an affiliate-style product recommendation or an Amazon keyword to the title. Hardware could become relevant after a verified revival and a measured workload, but selecting it now would reverse the proper order: confirm a working software ecosystem first, then size and price the infrastructure.

What former operators should preserve
If you previously ran an alt:V server, preserve your own material before deleting an old machine. Keep copies of server.toml, resources, modules, scripts, database dumps, permissions, certificates, firewall rules, logs, and documentation explaining environment variables or scheduled tasks. Record the software versions associated with the files and remove secrets from any copy shared publicly.
Preservation is not a claim that the service can be restarted. It simply protects community data and makes later migration possible if an official successor or compatible project appears. Test that archives can be opened and database dumps can be restored; an untested backup may be incomplete.
Keep configuration and data separate from credentials where possible. A public archive of a historical configuration should not expose passwords, tokens, private keys or database connection strings. Preservation is useful only when the files remain intelligible, recoverable and safe to share.
Common mistakes caused by old hosting guides
Buying hardware before confirming service availability
Processor cores and RAM cannot solve a shutdown platform. Confirm the software and connection ecosystem first; otherwise, a server purchase answers the wrong problem.
Treating historical minimums as universal requirements
The former 3.2 GHz, four-core, 4 GB minimum applied to a stated workload and an earlier software state. Databases, scripts, modules, virtualization, and player behavior could change the actual need.
Assuming a default port is permanent
Port 7788 was the documented default, not an immutable address. Operators could change it, and CDN mode altered the documented TCP/UDP behavior.
Confusing Linux server support with Linux client support
The old FAQ separated those cases. A Linux server build did not mean that players had an officially supported Linux client.
Trusting an archived panel template
A panel can retain an alt:V icon or installer after the underlying service has ended. Test the binary, connection path, listing or direct-connect process, and support commitment rather than relying on a label.
Reading an old specification as a guarantee
The historical figures were estimates and were explicitly subject to change. They did not promise a particular provider’s uptime, latency, CPU availability or player capacity, and they did not include every surrounding service an operator might need.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still host an alt:V server?
The official site says alt:V has been shut down, and no currently usable provider was verified. A private or successor project would need to provide its own current software and connection evidence before hosting could be treated as available.

What happened to alt:V?
The official homepage reports that it has been shut down. The reviewed result does not establish an announcement date or explain a replacement, so a more specific account would be speculation.
Is there a best alt:V host for 2026?
No responsible ranking can be made from verified current evidence. Provider claims should be checked for authentic software, client compatibility, a working connection path, maintained listing or direct connect, and clear commercial terms.
Are the old 3.2 GHz, four-core and 4 GB figures still valid?
They are legacy guidance for a performant server above 100 players. They are not a current buying recommendation, and the documentation itself said requirements could change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What was alt:V’s default port?
The historical default was 7788. The old documentation specified TCP and UDP without a CDN, UDP only with a CDN, and allowed the port to be changed in server.toml.
Could I run the server on Linux?
The old FAQ said native Linux server builds existed, but it also said the client lacked official Linux support. Both statements describe the former service and do not confirm current operation.
Were alt:V slots free?
The historical FAQ said slots were free and limited by hardware. That did not remove the costs of hosting, bandwidth, storage, databases, backups or administration, and it does not establish a current pricing model.
Should I buy a dedicated machine now?
No. Confirm an official revival or demonstrably operating successor first. Hardware specifications cannot recreate discontinued binaries, client support, authentication or listing infrastructure.

Bottom line for the 2026 search
The official alt:V site says the project has been shut down, and the available evidence does not verify a current provider capable of hosting a functioning alt:V service. Consequently, there is no responsible 2026 ranking, plan recommendation, or hardware purchase to make from this information. The old specifications, port rules, configuration options, and Linux notes remain historical reference material only. Revisit the hosting question only after an official revival or a demonstrably operating successor provides current software and connection evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still host an alt:V server in 2026?
The official alt:V site says the project has shut down. No currently usable provider was verified, so treat any listing as unconfirmed until current software and connection evidence is available.
What was alt:V’s default port?
The historical default was port 7788. The old documentation specified TCP and UDP without a CDN, UDP only with a CDN, and allowed the port to be changed in server.toml.
Are the old hardware requirements still current?
No. The 3.2 GHz, four-core, 4 GB minimum and the eight-core, 3.7 GHz mid-tier profile are legacy estimates, not 2026 purchasing guidance.
Can alt:V run on Linux?
The old FAQ said native Linux server builds existed but that the client lacked official Linux support. Those statements describe the former service and do not confirm current compatibility.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: alt:V’s official site says the service has shut down, so no current hosting provider can responsibly be ranked for 2026.
