Rarewaves is the better fit when you want a wider entertainment catalogue that includes DVDs, Blu-rays, books, games, toys, apparel, and gifts. Zavvi itself remains active in both the UK and US, so the practical choice is release-specific: compare the exact edition, stock status, delivered cost, seller, and shipping eligibility before ordering.
This guide explains what each retailer is useful for, how to check whether a listing is genuinely the edition you want, and how to avoid the common problems caused by preorders, marketplace listings, regional formats, and changing stock.

Which Zavvi alternative should you use?
There is no single replacement that wins for every film or collectible. HMV is the closest specialist comparison for UK physical-film collectors because its catalogue currently includes 4K Ultra HD SteelBooks, standard 4K releases, collector sets, box sets, preorders, and HMV-exclusive editions. Rarewaves is broader rather than more specialised: its stated range covers physical movies alongside books, games, consumer electronics, apparel, toys, and gifts. Zavvi continues to list movies and merchandise, so a particular Zavvi listing may still be the only convenient source for a given franchise or packaging variant.

Use the table as a starting point, not a guarantee of availability. Film listings change quickly, and the same title can appear as a standard disc, a SteelBook, a retailer exclusive, or a larger collector package with different contents.

- It's a BRAND NEW DAY for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn?t remember him?and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him?sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.
HMV: the closest specialist alternative for UK SteelBooks
HMV’s official category copy says, “Explore exclusives, limited editions & Steelbooks, plus box sets & new releases.” Its current SteelBooks and collector-editions catalogue shows hundreds of live listings across 4K Ultra HD SteelBooks, standard 4K releases, collector sets, and retailer exclusives. That makes it the first place to check when your priority is a physical movie with premium packaging rather than the lowest possible price.
What HMV currently carries
- 4K Ultra HD SteelBooks: packaged 4K releases for collectors who want a metal case as well as the disc.
- Standard 4K and Blu-ray editions: useful when the SteelBook is sold out or you prefer a conventional case.
- Collector sets and box sets: larger packages that can include several films, a library case, or franchise-focused presentation.
- Preorders and exclusives: releases announced before launch, including retailer-specific packaging that may not appear at another shop.
The catalogue is a live retail page, not a permanent inventory list. Individual items can be available, preorder-only, coming soon, or sold out at the same time. A search result that shows a title does not mean it can ship today.
Examples of HMV-exclusive and collector listings
HMV’s current preorder page includes examples such as an HMV-exclusive Spider-Man: Brand New Day 4K SteelBook and a Star Trek collection SteelBook library case. The displayed prices and release dates are live listing details and should be checked again when you order. They illustrate why a title search must include the packaging description: “4K SteelBook,” “collector edition,” and “library case” are not interchangeable products.
Recommended Free Tools
For upcoming releases, use HMV’s Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD pre-orders page, then open the item page and confirm the format, discs included, artwork, release date, and delivery estimate. If you are browsing the wider film preorder catalogue, HMV also provides an all-film and TV pre-orders page.
HMV delivery considerations
HMV’s all-film preorder page states: “Free UK Delivery with premium packaging on orders over £25.” Treat that as a current offer to verify against the checkout and terms, not as a permanent shipping rule. The destination selector on the preorder page reports shipping options for GBR, FRA, BEL, DEU, NLD, and IRL, but that does not guarantee that every product ships to every selected country. Product restrictions, release timing, and packaging requirements can change the result at checkout.
Rarewaves: the broadest alternative for mixed entertainment shopping
Rarewaves is less narrowly focused on collector film packaging. Its company page describes an assortment of DVDs and Blu-rays plus books, games, consumer electronics, apparel, toys, and gifts. This is useful if your order combines movies with other pop-culture products, or if you want to search beyond the specialist SteelBook shelves.
How Rarewaves sells products
Rarewaves says it sells through its own operation and through Amazon, eBay, OnBuy, Fnac, Rakuten, and Walmart. Its group page describes international delivery and partnerships with Amazon in multiple national marketplaces and eBay in multiple markets. These are company statements, not independent audits of stock, delivery speed, or customer-service performance. On any marketplace listing, check the seller name, dispatch location, condition, edition description, and return terms rather than assuming every result is supplied in the same way.

Rarewaves’ About page claims an assortment of over 2 million products and says it has delivered to over 60 million customers over nearly two decades. Rarewaves Group separately describes its direct-to-consumer website as having over 1 million products and says it serves customers in 185 countries. These figures are self-reported, the pages do not assign them a specific reporting year, and they should not be treated as audited or directly comparable with another retailer.
When Rarewaves is the better fit
- You want to add books, games, toys, apparel, or gifts to a movie order.
- The title is not available in a SteelBook and you are open to a standard DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K package.
- You need to search a marketplace as well as a direct retail site, while carefully checking who fulfils the order.
- You are ordering from outside the UK and want to investigate an international delivery option, subject to the destination and product’s checkout rules.
Rarewaves’ breadth does not prove that it has the exact limited edition you want. Search by the full title and format, then inspect photographs and the written specification before ordering.
Should you still consider Zavvi?
Yes. The current UK and US storefronts continue to show films, SteelBooks, collectibles, and merchandise. This is therefore a comparison of active shopping options, not a replacement for a closed business. Selection, pricing, and delivery can differ between the UK and US storefronts, and a product shown in one market may not be listed in the other.
Use Zavvi as one of the comparison checks when a release has distinctive franchise merchandise, a limited package, or a regional listing. Do not assume that a familiar title has identical contents across countries. Read the item’s format, language or subtitle information, disc count, release date, and delivery estimate on the storefront serving your address.

How to compare the exact edition rather than just the title
Collectors often lose money by comparing two listings that share a film title but are different products. Before you compare prices, identify the product along five dimensions.
1. Video format
Separate 4K Ultra HD from standard Blu-ray and DVD. A 4K disc normally requires a compatible 4K player and display; a standard Blu-ray listing is not an equivalent substitute. Some packages include more than one format, while others contain only the disc named in the title.
2. Packaging
“SteelBook” means a metal-case presentation, but not every SteelBook has the same artwork, finish, disc count, or retailer status. Compare a standard plastic case, a SteelBook, an embossed or premium SteelBook, and a collector box as separate editions.
3. Included contents
Check whether the package includes a single film, a trilogy, a complete series, a booklet, art cards, a slipcase, a figure, or a library-style case. A larger box is not automatically better value if you only want the movie discs.

4. Region and playback
Confirm the disc region or region-free status where the listing provides it, especially when buying from another country. Also check audio and subtitle languages. Packaging can be identical while the discs differ by market.
5. Timing and condition
Distinguish “in stock” from “preorder,” “coming soon,” and “sold out.” For marketplace results, confirm whether the item is new, used, sealed, or described as having cosmetic damage. A low price can reflect a different condition or a different edition.
A practical buying workflow
- Write the target precisely. Record the film or series, 4K/Blu-ray/DVD format, SteelBook or standard case, desired artwork, and any required extras.
- Check the specialist catalogue. Start with HMV’s SteelBooks page for UK collector releases and its preorder pages for upcoming products.
- Search the broader catalogue. Check Rarewaves for the same title and format, then inspect whether the result is sold directly or through a marketplace.
- Check the relevant Zavvi storefront. Compare the UK or US listing that serves your address, not a page from another region.
- Open every candidate listing. Verify the edition name, product images, disc format, contents, release date, condition, and stock status.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add shipping, taxes or import charges where applicable, and any required premium packaging. Do not compare sticker prices alone.
- Confirm delivery eligibility. Enter your country or postcode at checkout. A retailer’s general international reach does not mean every title can ship to every destination.
- Save the order evidence. Keep the confirmation showing the edition, seller, price, and expected dispatch date, particularly for a preorder or marketplace purchase.
Shipping, taxes, and geography
Delivery is product- and destination-specific. HMV’s page selector lists GBR, FRA, BEL, DEU, NLD, and IRL for the relevant preorder catalogue, while Rarewaves describes worldwide delivery and marketplace distribution. Neither statement guarantees that every title, seller, or package is eligible for every country.
For cross-border orders, calculate the delivered total using the checkout’s shipping charge and any taxes or import fees shown for your address. A £25 threshold or free-delivery message may apply only to a particular country, category, order value, or packaging method. Release-date items can also ship separately or later than in-stock products, depending on the retailer’s terms.
How to compare total cost fairly
| Cost element | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Item price | Is this the same format, artwork, disc count, and condition? |
| Shipping | Is delivery free, conditional, tracked, or premium-packaged? |
| Tax and import charges | Are charges collected at checkout or potentially due on arrival? |
| Seller and fulfilment | Is the listing supplied by the retailer or a marketplace seller? |
| Risk of substitution | Could a “similar” standard edition be sent instead of the specified collector package? |
Only after these checks should you decide that one shop is cheaper. A lower listing price can disappear once shipping, tax, or a different edition is included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying collectibles beyond movie discs
If your main goal is franchise merchandise rather than a particular film format, Rarewaves’ stated range of toys, apparel, gifts, and electronics may make it a convenient starting point. Zavvi also lists franchise merchandise and collectibles, while HMV’s strength is more concentrated in films, SteelBooks, collector editions, and box sets.
For a collectible, identify the character or franchise, product type, size, manufacturer or licence information shown on the listing, and whether the item is a preorder. Product photographs can show a prototype or promotional image, so use the written specification and release details as well. Compare packaging condition and return terms when display quality matters.
Common problems and how to prevent them
The listing is sold out after you find it
Check the same title in standard 4K or Blu-ray form, then compare another retailer. Do not treat a sold-out SteelBook page as evidence that the standard release is unavailable.
The date keeps moving
Preorder dates are live estimates. Recheck the item page before purchase and keep the confirmation email. Avoid promising a gift or event around an unconfirmed release date.
Rank #4
- In this darkly comic drama, Edward Norton stars as a depressed young man (named in the credits only as "Narrator") who has become a small cog in the world of big business. He doesn't like his work and gets no sense of reward from it, attempting instead to drown his sorrows by putting together the "perfect" apartment. He can't sleep and feels alienated from the world at large; he's become so despe
The marketplace result is ambiguous
Open the seller details and read the condition and edition fields. If the listing does not clearly identify 4K, Blu-ray, SteelBook, region, or included discs, choose a clearer listing rather than guessing.
The package cannot be delivered to your country
Try the storefront intended for your region, remove restricted items from a mixed order, or choose a seller that explicitly confirms delivery to your address. Destination selectors are useful indicators, not universal guarantees.
The delivered price is higher than expected
Review shipping, tax, import charges, currency conversion, and premium packaging. Recalculate using the checkout total, not the catalogue thumbnail.
Recommendations by collector goal
“I want the newest UK 4K SteelBook.”
Start with HMV’s SteelBooks and 4K preorder pages. Check whether the product is an HMV exclusive, confirm the release date, and compare the delivered total with other listings.
“I want a movie plus books, games, or gifts.”
Start with Rarewaves’ catalogue, but verify the exact seller, condition, and shipping for every marketplace item in the basket.
“I want a specific Zavvi-style franchise collectible.”
Compare the relevant Zavvi UK or US storefront with Rarewaves and other clearly identified listings. Match the product type, size, licence, and preorder status before comparing price.
“I only need the cheapest playable copy.”
Ignore premium packaging and compare standard DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K editions with the same playback requirements. The cheapest title result may not be the same format.

- Exact film or franchise title confirmed
- 4K, Blu-ray, or DVD format confirmed
- SteelBook, standard case, or collector box identified
- Disc count, extras, region, audio, and subtitles checked where relevant
- In-stock, preorder, coming-soon, or sold-out status understood
- Seller and item condition verified, especially on marketplaces
- Destination, shipping method, taxes, and import costs checked
- Total delivered price compared across equivalent editions
- Release date and returns information saved with the order
For most UK SteelBook collectors, HMV is the most direct Zavvi alternative to check first. For mixed entertainment shopping and international marketplace breadth, Rarewaves deserves a comparison. Because Zavvi remains active, the best purchase is usually the one whose exact edition, seller, delivery terms, and total cost match your collecting goal—not a permanent winner chosen without checking the individual release.
