DuckDuckGo’s NoAI option is the clearest starting point if you want ordinary links without prominent generated answers. Its dedicated NoAI search address is intended to remove AI features, while DuckDuckGo’s help documentation says its AI tools are optional. Brave Search is the strongest second choice when an independent index matters and you are willing to disable its automatic AI answers. Startpage, Kagi and Mojeek each solve a different part of the problem, but none should be described as completely AI-free without checking the current settings.
“AI-free” is not one universal specification. A search service may offer generated answer summaries, a chat interface, AI-generated images or behind-the-scenes ranking assistance. The practical goal is therefore to choose a service whose visible AI answers can be switched off, then verify the live settings before searching sensitive or important topics.

Feature controls and defaults can change as products are redesigned. The guidance below reflects vendor documentation and the Brown University IT private-search guide checked on October 13, 2026. Treat each provider’s privacy, index and feature statements as descriptions of its service, not as an independent audit.

What “AI-free search” should mean
Before comparing services, decide which behavior you want to avoid. These are separate requirements:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- No generated answer at the top: You receive a conventional list of web links instead of a synthesized paragraph.
- No AI chat: The search page does not invite an ongoing conversational exchange or follow-up prompts.
- No AI-generated images: Image results are filtered so that generated pictures are not mixed with ordinary web images.
- No AI feature anywhere: The provider does not expose assisted search, summaries or related tools at all. The available documentation does not establish this absolute condition for every service.
Most providers document controls for the first three items rather than guaranteeing that no machine-learning system is used anywhere in indexing, spam detection or ranking. For that reason, “turn off AI answers” is a more supportable promise than “this search engine uses no AI.” A visible answer panel, an optional chat tool and an internal ranking system are different product layers.
Quick comparison
| Service | AI control or caution | Index and business trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| DuckDuckGo NoAI | Dedicated NoAI destination; official help says AI features are optional and can be disabled or reduced. Confirm the current configuration because the settings page can change. | Its results are described by Brave’s comparison material as depending on Yahoo/Bing sources; that is a vendor description, not an independent audit. | Free searches where avoiding visible AI answers is the first priority. |
| Brave Search | Settings include an automatic “Answer with AI” control. Turn it off for a conventional results page. | Brave says its index is built from scratch. An optional Google fallback can mix in third-party results and changes the independence trade-off. Ad-supported, with an ad-free Premium option. | People who want an independent-index claim and a clear AI-answer toggle. |
| Startpage | The available material does not establish a current dedicated AI-off switch. Inspect the live settings before calling it AI-free. | Uses Google-derived results through a privacy-oriented service layer rather than an independent crawler index. | Readers who prefer familiar Google-style results and a privacy intermediary. |
| Kagi | Lists an AI instant-answer feature. Check current controls before assuming every AI component can be disabled. | Paid, ad-free model; combines its own indexes with anonymized requests to traditional indexes. | Users willing to pay for an ad-free experience and multiple result sources. |
| Mojeek | No current official AI-control description was established in the available material. Verify its settings directly. | Brown University IT lists it as using its own crawler; that guide was published February 9, 2023 and is not current AI-control documentation. | Readers interested in another crawler-based alternative who will check features themselves. |
No comparative search-quality test establishes that one service returns more relevant links than another. Treat privacy, indexing and AI descriptions as provider or institutional claims, not as an independent audit.
DuckDuckGo: the simplest first attempt
Why it leads the list
DuckDuckGo explicitly points users to a NoAI search destination and describes its AI features as optional. That combination makes it the most direct documented route for someone who mainly wants the old-style results page. The NoAI address is noai.duckduckgo.com.
Recommended Free Tools
DuckDuckGo’s help documentation also states, “Our search engine doesn’t collect your search history.” Attribute that statement to the company’s own documentation; it is not an independent privacy audit. The available comparison material describes DuckDuckGo as relying on Yahoo/Bing results, so its privacy-oriented interface does not mean it operates a wholly independent web index.
How to use the NoAI experience
- Open noai.duckduckgo.com directly rather than starting at an ordinary search address.
- Run a test query that would normally trigger an answer summary, such as a definition or a current-events question.
- Check that the page presents ordinary result links without a generated answer panel.
- Open the service’s live settings and review AI options after updates, browser changes or account changes. The documented feature set can change.
- If you still see an assisted answer, use the normal settings controls to disable or reduce AI features, then repeat the test in a private window to rule out a stale page or extension.
This is the best choice when “no prominent generated answer” matters more than having an independently crawled index. It is not evidence that every internal ranking or anti-spam component is free of machine learning.
What to verify before making it your default
Use the direct NoAI address as a bookmark or home-page shortcut, then test both web and image search if those are part of your routine. A setting that suppresses answer summaries may not describe the behavior of a separate image experience. Check again after signing in, changing browsers or installing a mobile app, because preferences may be stored separately. The defensible statement is that your current NoAI configuration showed conventional results, not that every DuckDuckGo product surface is permanently AI-free.
Brave Search: independent-index option with a visible switch
Disable automatic AI answers
Brave’s settings identify an “Answer with AI” control that determines whether AI-powered answers appear automatically for some searches. To get a traditional results page:
- Open Brave Search settings from the search page.
- Find the setting labeled “Answer with AI.”
- Turn off automatic answers, save the change if the interface asks you to, and run a query that commonly produces a summary.
- Recheck the setting after clearing site data, changing browsers or using a different device; preferences may not follow you everywhere.
Disabling automatic answers does not prove that the service contains no AI feature. It controls the visible answer behavior documented in the settings. A user might still be able to open an optional answer tool manually, so check for separate buttons or chat entry points.

Check the fallback setting
Brave says its search index is built from scratch. It also offers optional Google fallback mixing. If independent indexing is part of your definition of AI-free or trustworthy search, inspect that option and leave fallback mixing off. Enabling it can bring in third-party result changes, so the resulting page is no longer based solely on Brave’s own index.
Brave is ad-supported, with an ad-free Premium option. That is a business-model choice, not a measure of result quality. Choose it when index independence and a controllable answer panel matter more than avoiding advertising. No price or subscription value judgment is established here, so check the current Premium terms directly.
When Brave is the better fit
Brave is the logical experiment for someone who wants to avoid both a prominent generated answer and dependence on a partner index. It is not automatically the right choice for someone who wants zero advertising, a Google-derived result set or a guaranteed absence of all machine-learning systems. Those are separate requirements that may point to Startpage, Kagi or a different configuration.
Startpage: Google-derived results through a privacy layer
Startpage is useful for a different reason: it is described as drawing from Google’s index while adding a privacy-oriented intermediary. That can appeal to someone who wants familiar coverage without directly using Google’s interface.
The available documentation does not establish a current, dedicated AI-off setting for Startpage. Do not assume that a privacy layer removes generated answers or other assisted features. Open the live settings, look for controls governing answer summaries, chat or image generation, and test a query that normally triggers those features. If no explicit control exists, describe Startpage as privacy-oriented and Google-derived rather than AI-free.
Its central trade-off is source familiarity versus index independence. You are choosing a service layer around Google-derived results, not an independent crawler. That may be exactly what you want if consistency with Google-style coverage matters more than controlling the underlying index, but it should not be confused with either DuckDuckGo’s NoAI destination or Brave’s built-from-scratch claim.
Kagi: paid, ad-free search with an AI feature to review
Kagi documents an ad-free business model and combines its own indexes with anonymized requests to traditional indexes. That makes it a candidate for readers who are willing to pay to avoid advertising and want several sources behind one interface.
Kagi also lists an AI instant-answer feature. Because the available material does not establish that every AI component can be disabled, check the current controls before subscribing on the assumption that it is completely AI-free. Look specifically for separate switches for instant answers, chat, summaries and images; one disabled feature may not cover the others.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
The key trade-off is straightforward: Kagi addresses advertising and source aggregation, while the AI question requires verification. It is not the default recommendation for someone whose only requirement is eliminating generated answers. Before paying, confirm which controls apply to your plan, whether preferences persist across devices and whether a conventional results page appears for a test query.
Mojeek: crawler-based alternative, settings unresolved
Brown University IT’s private-search guide, published February 9, 2023, lists Mojeek as using its own crawler. That distinguishes it from services that primarily relay results from a larger index.
No current official description of Mojeek’s AI controls was established in the available material. If you try it, inspect the present interface for answer summaries, chat and generated images, then record which controls you changed. Do not market or configure it as AI-free based only on its crawler description: an independent crawler says where links come from, not whether the interface adds generated answers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMojeek is therefore an exploratory option rather than a firm recommendation. The older university guide can help explain its crawler-based identity, but it cannot establish how the current product behaves in October 2026. Give the live interface priority and note the date of your own check.
How to choose among the alternatives
| Your priority | Start with | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Remove visible AI answers with the least effort | DuckDuckGo NoAI | The NoAI address loads and current settings keep assisted features off. |
| Use an index claimed to be built independently | Brave Search | “Answer with AI” is off and Google fallback mixing is disabled if independence matters. |
| Keep Google-like coverage through a privacy service | Startpage | Whether the current interface offers an AI-off control; do not infer it from privacy claims. |
| Pay to remove ads | Kagi | Whether instant answers and other AI tools can all be disabled on your plan. |
| Try another crawler-based index | Mojeek | Current AI behavior and settings, because the older institutional guide does not answer that question. |
If two priorities conflict, decide which one is non-negotiable. For example, DuckDuckGo is the clearest documented route for suppressing visible answers, while Brave better matches a reader who also requires an independent-index claim. Kagi may address advertising but introduces a paid subscription and an AI instant-answer feature to evaluate. Startpage may provide familiar Google-derived results but has no established dedicated AI-off control in the material reviewed.
A practical verification checklist
Use this checklist whenever you switch providers or the interface is redesigned:
- Search a definition, calculation or news question likely to trigger an answer panel.
- Confirm that the first result area contains links rather than a synthesized paragraph.
- Check for a separate chat button or follow-up prompt and disable it if present.
- Open image search and determine whether generated images can be filtered or whether the provider mixes them with ordinary results.
- Review whether a browser extension, mobile app or logged-in account has separate preferences.
- Repeat the check after clearing cookies or using another device if consistent behavior matters.
- Write down the service, browser, device and date you tested so a later redesign is easy to identify.
A toggle can control the default display without removing the feature from the product. The most defensible conclusion is therefore “AI answers are disabled in this configuration,” not “the service contains no AI.”
Privacy, indexing and advertising are separate decisions
Choosing an AI-light interface does not automatically determine who receives your query, how results are sourced or how the service earns money. Compare four independent axes:

- AI presentation: Can generated answers, chat and images be disabled?
- Index source: Is the service using its own crawler, a partner index or a mixture?
- Privacy and profiling: What does the provider say it stores or uses? Vendor statements should not be treated as independent audits.
- Funding: Is the service ad-supported, paid, or a combination?
For example, Brave’s independent-index claim and AI-answer switch address different questions. Startpage’s Google-derived results and privacy-oriented layer address another pair. Kagi’s paid, ad-free model does not by itself settle whether instant answers are enabled. DuckDuckGo’s statement that it does not collect search history is a company statement about its own service, not proof that every partner supplying results follows the same policy.
There is also no supported physical-product purchase associated with these choices. These are browser-based services used through devices you already own, and no verified affiliate commission or tracked signup destination is established for the providers listed here.

An answer still appears after disabling AI
Check that you changed the setting for the same service and browser where you are searching. Open a private window, disable extensions that modify search pages, and test again. Some providers distinguish automatic answers from an AI tool you can still open manually, so review every related control rather than one checkbox.

The results look different after enabling a fallback
Fallback mixing can change the source of results. In Brave Search, inspect the Google fallback option if maintaining an independent index matters. A change in result composition is not proof that one index is objectively better; it reflects a different source.
A provider’s documentation is old or incomplete
Give the live settings priority for current behavior. The Mojeek description from February 9, 2023 identifies a crawler but does not document present AI controls. Likewise, an older help article may not reflect a redesigned interface. Record the date you checked and avoid making a permanent claim from a temporary default.
The setting works on one device but not another
Repeat the check in the exact browser, app or account you use for daily searches. Preferences may be stored locally or separately across products. A private-window test can show whether an extension or stale cookie is responsible, but it does not replace checking the provider’s current settings.
What “AI-free” claims should and should not say
Use precise language in your own notes, reviews or recommendations. “DuckDuckGo’s NoAI address is designed to remove AI features” reflects the documented destination. “Brave’s automatic Answer with AI control is off” describes a particular configuration. “Startpage is completely AI-free” or “Mojeek contains no AI” goes beyond the documented evidence. Precision matters because a service can suppress a visible answer while still offering an optional assistant or using automated systems elsewhere.

Bottom line for different readers
- Want the clearest documented no-answer path: Use DuckDuckGo’s NoAI destination and verify the current settings.
- Want an independent-index option: Use Brave Search with “Answer with AI” disabled, and review fallback mixing.
- Want Google-derived results behind a privacy-oriented service: Consider Startpage, but verify AI controls yourself.
- Want paid, ad-free search: Consider Kagi only after checking whether its instant-answer feature can be fully disabled.
- Want another crawler-based service: Try Mojeek as an experiment, not as a guaranteed AI-free solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Yahoo Search alternative is the best starting point for avoiding AI answers?
DuckDuckGo’s NoAI destination is the clearest documented starting point. Open noai.duckduckgo.com, test a query likely to trigger a summary and confirm the live settings still suppress assisted answers.
Is DuckDuckGo completely free of AI?
Do not make that blanket claim. DuckDuckGo says its AI features are optional and provides a NoAI destination, but that establishes control over visible features rather than the absence of machine learning in every internal system.
How do I turn off AI answers in Brave Search?
Open Brave Search settings, find “Answer with AI,” turn off automatic answers and test a definition or news query. If index independence matters, also review and disable optional Google fallback mixing.

No. A crawler description explains where links come from, not whether the interface adds generated answers, chat or images. Mojeek illustrates this distinction.
