Best Alternatives to Xteink Mini Ereaders for Pocket-Sized Reading

The right pocket e-reader depends on which compromise you can live with. The XTEINK X3 is the smallest option at 3.7 inches and about 58 g, but it has no front light or touchscreen. The XTEINK X4 Pro remains pocket-sized while adding a 4.3-inch screen, front lighting, touch input and page-turn buttons. The XTEINK X4 Classic keeps the same 4.3-inch size at about 68 g but drops the light and touchscreen. If reading apps, adjustable lighting and Android flexibility matter more than minimum size, the BOOX Palma 2 is the adjacent alternative: its 6.13-inch, 170 g body is much larger, but it runs open Android with Google Play.

There is no universal winner. Choose by reading environment first: dark-room reading favors the X4 Pro or Palma 2; maximum pocketability favors the X3; physical buttons without a light favor the X4 Classic; and app choice favors the Palma 2.

Quick picks by priority

  • Smallest dedicated reader: XTEINK X3. Its 3.7-inch display and approximately 58 g weight minimize bulk, while button-only control and no front light keep the design simple.
  • Most capable true pocket reader: XTEINK X4 Pro. It combines a 4.3-inch, 219 PPI display with a front light, touchscreen and physical buttons. Its product page showed “Sold out” when checked, so availability needs confirmation before purchase.
  • Lower-cost button reader: XTEINK X4 Classic. It has a 4.3-inch display, approximately 68 g weight and the same stated 16 GB storage expandable to 256 GB, but no front light or touchscreen.
  • Best for Android apps: BOOX Palma 2. It offers open Android, pre-installed Google Play, adjustable brightness and color temperature, and microSD expansion, but at 6.13 inches and 170 g it is not a same-size substitute for the X3 or X4 models.

How the pocket-sized XTEINK models differ

The three XTEINK models occupy a narrow size range, so small feature changes have a large effect on daily use. The manufacturer describes all three as having 16 GB of internal storage expandable to 256 GB, but the screens, controls, batteries and lighting differ.

Model Display Weight Front light Touchscreen Controls Battery Storage Price shown on XTEINK homepage when accessed
XTEINK X3 3.7 inches Approximately 58 g No No Physical buttons 650 mAh 16 GB, expandable to 256 GB $69
XTEINK X4 Classic 4.3 inches Approximately 68 g No No Physical buttons 920 mAh 16 GB, expandable to 256 GB $79
XTEINK X4 Pro 4.3 inches; 219 PPI Approximately 72 g Yes Yes Physical buttons and touch 1,100 mAh 16 GB microSD card, expandable to 256 GB From $99

These prices are a dated homepage snapshot, not guaranteed current prices. The X4 Pro detail page simultaneously showed “Sold out,” illustrating why a homepage price should not be treated as proof that a particular regional store can ship the model.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

XTEINK X3: the smallest option

What you gain

The X3 is the smallest XTEINK model described in the lineup. At 3.7 inches and about 58 g, it is aimed at readers who want a dedicated e-reader that occupies very little space in a pocket, small bag or jacket. Its 650 mAh battery and 16 GB storage, expandable to 256 GB, are the manufacturer’s listed specifications.

Physical buttons are the only stated input method. That can be an advantage when you want to turn pages without touching the display, when wearing gloves, or when you prefer a tactile click. It also avoids accidental taps while carrying the device.

What you give up

The compact body necessarily provides a smaller reading area. A page with large type, wide margins or illustrations will show less content than on a 4.3-inch reader, and frequent zooming or font changes may be needed for some books. The X3 has no touchscreen and no front light. In a dark room you need an external reading light, just as you would with a print book that has no built-in illumination.

Choose the X3 when minimum size and weight matter more than lighting, touch navigation and a larger page view. It is less suitable if you regularly read in bed, on flights with the cabin lights off, or in changing light where carrying a separate lamp is inconvenient.

XTEINK X4 Pro: the fullest pocket-sized feature set

Hardware and controls

The X4 Pro enlarges the display to 4.3 inches and adds a front light, touchscreen and physical buttons. The manufacturer lists 219 PPI, dimensions of 111 × 69 × 5.95 mm, a weight of 72 g and a 1,100 mAh battery. It also lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The combination of touch and buttons lets you switch interaction styles. Touch can make library navigation, text selection or menu use faster, while buttons provide predictable page turns without covering the screen. Readers who dislike touch controls do not have to use them for ordinary paging.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Files and expansion

The product page lists EPUB and TXT documents and JPG and BMP images. It describes a 16 GB microSD card with expansion up to 256 GB. Those are published specifications rather than independently measured capacity or performance figures, so confirm the exact card arrangement and supported files in the regional listing before relying on a large library or image collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability caveat

The X4 Pro is the most capable direct pocket alternative in this comparison, but its product page displayed “Sold out” at the time checked even though the XTEINK homepage showed a starting price of $99. Stock can differ by country, store and date. Check the model name, shipping destination and stock status immediately before ordering.

XTEINK X4 Classic: a larger screen without lighting or touch

The X4 Classic uses a 4.3-inch display and weighs approximately 68 g, placing it between the X3 and X4 Pro in the stated lineup. The manufacturer lists a 920 mAh battery, 16 GB storage expandable to 256 GB, a magnetic backplate and button-only control.

Its defining omission is the lack of a front light. It also lacks a touchscreen, so navigation and page turns rely on physical buttons. That makes the Classic a straightforward choice for readers who already use a lamp and prefer hardware controls, but it is not a solution for reading in darkness. The 4.3-inch panel gives more room for text than the X3 while keeping the device substantially lighter than a phone-sized e-paper model.

The XTEINK homepage showed the X4 Classic at $79 when accessed. Treat that figure as a dated snapshot; it does not establish current stock or delivery to your country.

BOOX Palma 2: an Android e-paper device, not a mini-reader replacement

Why consider it

The Palma 2 takes a different approach. Its 6.13-inch screen and 170 g weight make it phone-shaped and portable, but physically much larger than a 3.7-inch X3 or 4.3-inch X4. The official specifications describe open Android with pre-installed Google Play, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage and microSD expansion.

  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Its adjustable front light includes brightness and color-temperature controls. That gives you more control over warm or cool illumination than a reader with only an on/off light. Google Play and open Android also allow a broader choice of reading apps and services than a closed, dedicated reader, subject to each app’s compatibility and account requirements.

When its extra size is worthwhile

Choose the Palma 2 when app flexibility is central: you may want several ebook apps, library software, web reading or other Android applications on one e-paper device. The larger screen can also reduce page turns and make complex layouts easier to view.

Do not describe it as the same kind of pocket device as the X3. At 170 g, it is nearly three times the X3’s stated weight, and its 6.13-inch body takes more space in a small pocket. It is better understood as a phone-sized e-paper companion whose portability comes from its narrow shape, not from miniaturization.

Front light, external light and reading comfort

Front light

A front-lit e-reader shines light across the display from the bezel toward the page. The X4 Pro and Palma 2 have this feature. It is useful for bedrooms, evening travel and dim rooms because the light is built into the device. The Palma 2 additionally specifies adjustable brightness and color temperature.

External light

The X3 and X4 Classic have no front light. You can still read them in daylight or under a room lamp, but you need an external source in darkness. A clip-on lamp adds another item to carry and can create glare or uneven illumination, although some readers prefer its separation from the display.

Choosing for your routine

  • If you read mostly outdoors or under a desk lamp, the X3 or X4 Classic can avoid paying for a feature you rarely use.
  • If you read in bed or during overnight travel, a built-in light is usually more convenient than carrying a separate lamp.
  • If warm nighttime illumination matters, the Palma 2 is the only option here with manufacturer-described color-temperature adjustment.

Touchscreens versus physical buttons

The X3 and X4 Classic are button-only readers. Buttons provide tactile feedback and keep fingerprints off the page, but entering settings, selecting text or browsing a large library may require more directional presses.

The Palma 2 is an Android device designed around app interaction. Touch-driven app interfaces can be more familiar, but they also expose more settings and software behavior than a simple dedicated reader. Decide whether you want a focused book appliance or a small e-paper computer.

File formats, apps and connectivity

Dedicated-reader approach

The X4 Pro product page explicitly lists EPUB and TXT documents plus JPG and BMP images. The supplied specifications do not establish a complete format list for the X3 or X4 Classic, so verify the exact manual or product listing for files you use, especially PDFs, comics or DRM-protected books.

The XTEINK information provided for these models does not identify an open app store. Treat them as dedicated readers rather than assuming that Android applications can be installed. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are specifically listed for the X4 Pro; equivalent connectivity details for every other model should be confirmed from the current regional page.

Android approach

The Palma 2 officially runs open Android with Google Play. That makes it the natural choice when access to multiple reading ecosystems is more important than the smallest body. App behavior, DRM support, synchronization and battery use can vary by application, so check the requirements of the services you intend to use.

Storage and library size

Each XTEINK model in the comparison is described with 16 GB of storage and expansion up to 256 GB. The X4 Pro specification refers to a 16 GB microSD card and a 256 GB maximum. This is ample capacity for many text-heavy libraries, but illustrated books and image files consume more space.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The Palma 2 lists 128 GB of internal storage, 6 GB of RAM and microSD expansion. Its larger base capacity is useful if you install several Android apps or keep large documents locally. Storage capacity does not guarantee that every file format or app will work; compatibility remains a separate question.

Price and availability: how to check before buying

  1. Open the regional product page. Store currency, taxes and shipping can differ by country.
  2. Confirm the exact model. X3, X4 Classic and X4 Pro have similar names but materially different lighting and controls.
  3. Check the stock indicator on the model page. The X4 Pro page showed “Sold out” even while the homepage displayed “from $99.”
  4. Review delivery geography and return terms. A listed price does not prove that the seller ships to your address.
  5. Recheck immediately before payment. The homepage figures of $69 for X3, $79 for X4 Classic and $99-plus for X4 Pro are historical access-time snapshots, not standing prices.

Marketplace listings can change independently from the manufacturer’s store. If you use one, verify the model number, included storage card, seller location and current stock rather than relying on an old price mention.

Which model fits your reading scenario?

You want the smallest possible dedicated e-reader

Pick the X3 if 3.7 inches and approximately 58 g are the decisive specifications. Accept the smaller page, button-only navigation and need for an external light.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want a pocket reader for mixed lighting

Pick the X4 Pro if you can find current stock. Its 4.3-inch display remains compact while the front light handles dark rooms, and touch plus buttons cover both navigation preferences. Confirm availability first because the product page was sold out when checked.

You want a simple, lit-room reader with buttons

Pick the X4 Classic if you prefer a 4.3-inch page and physical controls but normally read where a lamp is available. It is lighter than the Pro by the manufacturer’s approximate figures and costs less in the cited homepage snapshot, but it has no front light or touch.

You want apps more than minimum dimensions

Pick the Palma 2 when Google Play, open Android, adjustable front lighting and generous storage justify a 6.13-inch, 170 g device. It is an adjacent category, not a direct pocket-size equivalent.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Measure the pocket or case where the reader will travel; screen size alone does not describe total carrying comfort.
  • Decide whether you can tolerate carrying an external lamp.
  • Choose buttons, touch or both based on how you turn pages and navigate libraries.
  • List the formats and reading apps you actually use, then confirm support rather than assuming it.
  • Estimate storage for illustrated books, manga, PDFs and images, not only plain EPUB files.
  • Check the current regional price, taxes, shipping and stock on the exact model page.
  • Remember that manufacturer specifications are not independent battery-life or performance tests.

What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you

The figures above come from manufacturer product information and a dated comparison, not from a common laboratory test. No shared independent battery benchmark or performance test was established for these models. Battery capacities such as 650 mAh, 920 mAh and 1,100 mAh indicate relative hardware size, but they do not predict identical runtime because lighting level, wireless use, file type and software activity change consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the X4 Pro’s 219 PPI figure is a stated display specification, not a guarantee of identical contrast or speed under every reading condition. Use the numbers to narrow your choice, then verify the current regional listing and return policy before committing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
