One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe best Windows 10 replacement depends on what the PC and its owner actually need. First verify that the computer truly cannot run a supported Windows 11 configuration; a disabled firmware setting or an unrecognized security feature can sometimes be corrected. If the machine is genuinely outside Microsoft’s supported hardware path, choose among three practical routes: install ChromeOS Flex for browser-focused work, install Linux Mint or Ubuntu for a conventional local desktop, or keep Windows temporarily through an eligible Extended Security Updates (ESU) enrollment while planning a supported Windows 11 PC. Replacing the computer is usually the least disruptive option when essential software or peripherals only work with Windows.
Back up personal files, confirm the backup can be opened, and test the replacement operating system from installation media or a live session before erasing Windows 10. Compatibility with the exact model—not merely its product family—should decide the installation.

What “unsupported Windows 10 PC” means in 2026
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update. Microsoft’s standard servicing ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, an ordinary Windows 10 installation no longer receives normal quality updates, new or updated features, security updates, or technical support. The operating system may continue to boot and run existing programs, but continued operation is not the same as continued security coverage.
Microsoft describes an unsupported installation as one that can keep running without the normal update and support commitment. Its lifecycle guidance says that once an operating system reaches end of support, customers no longer receive technical assistance, software updates, or security fixes. That makes an internet-connected, unsupported installation a transition problem rather than a permanent maintenance strategy.

There are two different situations behind the word unsupported:
- Configuration problem: the processor may be eligible, but firmware settings such as TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot are disabled, or the current installation does not recognize a requirement correctly.
- Hardware limitation: the processor, firmware, or another component is outside Microsoft’s supported Windows 11 path. Changing a setting will not turn that computer into a supported device.
Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 minimum requirements and the exact processor and device status before choosing another operating system. If the PC is eligible after a legitimate configuration change, upgrading to supported Windows 11 is generally simpler than migrating to a different platform.
Choose by workload, not by operating-system popularity
Evaluate each route against the work that must continue after the change. A replacement system can look attractive until a required accounting package, specialist application, printer, scanner, game, accessibility device, or offline workflow has no compatible version.

| Reader need | Most plausible route | Why it fits | Critical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mostly webmail, documents in browser services, streaming, and ordinary websites | ChromeOS Flex | Designed for a browser-centered workflow and can give an older computer a simpler managed desktop | The exact model must be certified, and required functions must work |
| Local desktop applications with Linux versions or workable substitutes | Linux Mint or Ubuntu | Provides a full installed desktop with local file management and broad Linux software choices | Test applications, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, printers, and other peripherals |
| Windows-only software or hardware is essential | Supported Windows 11 PC | Preserves the existing application and device ecosystem | Confirm the replacement’s Windows 11 eligibility and transfer requirements |
| Needs a short transition while arranging a move | Eligible Windows 10 ESU | Can provide limited Critical and Important security updates after end of support | Edition, region, account, payment, and enrollment conditions vary |
Compare not only software names but also the way you work. A web application may replace a desktop program for one person but fail another who needs offline access, a plug-in, a custom macro, a special file format, or a device driver. “Runs in a browser” also does not guarantee that printing, scanning, webcam controls, Bluetooth accessories, or accessibility hardware will behave identically.
ChromeOS Flex: best for a browser-first computer
ChromeOS Flex is a candidate for an older Windows, Mac, or Linux computer whose owner does almost everything in a browser and does not depend on Windows desktop applications. Google says Flex works on most devices made over the last 10 or more years, but that broad statement is not a compatibility guarantee for every machine.
Certification is model-specific
Google certifies exact model names and numbers. Two computers sold under a similar family name can use different Wi-Fi, graphics, storage, or firmware components and behave differently. Before installation, locate the complete model identifier from the computer’s label, firmware screen, or current operating system and search Google’s ChromeOS Flex certified-model list for that exact entry.
Read the certification notes and the listed certified-until date. Once certification expires, Google says the device is no longer eligible for Google support or continuing testing, and future updates are not guaranteed. A computer that installs successfully today therefore still needs a support-date check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat certification does and does not promise
On certified models, Google lists baseline functions that are guaranteed, including installation, networking where present, keyboard, display, and sleep/resume. Other tested features—such as Bluetooth, touchscreen input, function keys, and SD-card slots—are not guaranteed on every certified model. Check the model notes for any exception that would affect your routine.
When Flex is a poor fit
- You must run a Windows-only desktop application, game, driver, or plug-in.
- Your work depends on a peripheral whose function is not guaranteed on the certified model.
- You need a traditional local desktop with broad native application choices rather than a browser-centered environment.
- The exact model is absent from the certification list or its certification has expired.
Safe installation approach
Google provides an official preparation guide for installing Flex on a Windows, Mac, or Linux target. Follow the current guide rather than an old video, because media requirements and screens can change. Prepare the installer on a separate USB flash drive, boot the target computer from it, and use the live or try-before-install option when offered. Confirm Wi-Fi, display scaling, audio, keyboard shortcuts, Bluetooth, sleep, and any essential web applications before choosing an option that erases the internal drive.

Linux Mint: a familiar full desktop for compatible hardware
Linux Mint is a reasonable choice when you want a locally installed desktop, ordinary file management, and Linux-compatible applications without remaining tied to Windows. It can be a comfortable transition for people who prefer a conventional desktop, taskbar, application menu, and windowed programs.
Do not select Mint solely because an older article calls it “lightweight” or assigns it a particular minimum requirement. Release versions, supported hardware, desktop editions, and support periods change. Check the current official Mint download and FAQ pages for the release you intend to install.
Application and peripheral checks
List every program that matters before downloading an installer. Look for a native Linux release, a web version, or a documented replacement, and test the actual files and workflow you use. A replacement that opens a document is not necessarily sufficient if you rely on macros, templates, fonts, plug-ins, or a specialized export format.
Test the computer from Mint’s live environment where available. Verify the exact wireless adapter, graphics output, speakers, microphone, webcam, printer, scanner, Bluetooth accessories, and accessibility hardware. A live session is useful for detecting hardware problems, but performance in a live session can differ from an installed system because it runs from USB storage.
Ubuntu: another full-desktop Linux route
Ubuntu is another candidate for a locally installed desktop. It has a large software ecosystem and extensive documentation, but those advantages do not eliminate model-specific driver or application checks. Use the current official Ubuntu desktop requirements and download information for the release you choose; do not rely on an old minimum specification.
Decide between Mint and Ubuntu by testing
The practical difference for an unsupported Windows PC is less about a universal “best” distribution and more about whether the chosen release works on that computer and supports the owner’s applications. Create a test USB for the distribution you are considering, or test both if you are undecided. Compare Wi-Fi reliability, graphics acceleration, suspend and resume, printer discovery, display scaling, touchpad behavior, and the availability of the software you need.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep notes during testing. If one distribution recognizes a device immediately and the other does not, that concrete result is more useful than a general reputation for ease or speed.
Keeping Windows temporarily: ESU and replacement hardware
Extended Security Updates are a bridge, not ordinary support
Microsoft offers consumer and organizational Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025. ESU is intended to provide continued Critical and Important security updates for enrolled devices. It does not restore the normal Windows 10 servicing model, add new features, or make an ineligible computer a supported Windows 11 device.
Eligibility and enrollment details can depend on the Windows edition, country or region, account type, payment or other conditions, and whether the device is managed by an organization. Verify the current Microsoft terms for the specific computer before relying on ESU. Treat enrollment as time to migrate or replace the PC, not as a reason to postpone the decision indefinitely.

When replacement is the least risky option
A supported Windows 11 computer is usually the least disruptive long-term route when a required program, driver, or peripheral has no reliable Linux or web alternative. A replacement also avoids spending days adapting workflows that are tied to Windows. A refurbished computer can be a sensible category to investigate, but confirm its exact processor, firmware features, Windows 11 eligibility, storage health, battery condition if portable, and return or warranty terms before purchase.
Recommended Free Tools
Budget the total transition, not just the computer: backup storage, a possible USB installer, application licenses, data transfer time, and any specialist support can matter more than the operating-system download.
Prepare before changing the operating system
- Inventory the essentials. Record application names and versions, data locations, browser extensions, saved credentials, printers, scanners, webcams, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices, and accessibility equipment. Identify anything that cannot be replaced or reinstalled.
- Back up personal files. Microsoft identifies an external hard drive or USB key as a way to copy files. Include documents, photos, videos, mail archives, browser bookmarks, password-manager data, and application-specific profiles where applicable.
- Verify the backup. Open representative files directly from the backup device and confirm that folders, dates, and file sizes are present. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption.
- Record recovery information. Save software license details, activation information, encryption recovery keys, and any manufacturer recovery media or instructions you may need if the migration is cancelled.
- Check exact compatibility. Use the exact computer model for ChromeOS Flex certification and the current official requirements for Mint or Ubuntu. Do not infer compatibility from a similar model number.
- Plan a rollback. Decide how you would restore Windows 10 or recover files if a required device fails. Do not erase the internal drive until the backup and recovery route are clear.
Test first, then install
Use a non-destructive trial
Download installation media only from the chosen project’s official site and prepare it according to its current instructions. Booting from a USB drive may require selecting a temporary boot menu key or changing firmware settings; the manufacturer’s manual is the authoritative source for that key.
During the trial, perform the tasks you actually do rather than merely checking that the desktop appears:
- Join both available Wi-Fi bands if your network offers them.
- Play audio through the built-in speakers and a headset; test the microphone and webcam.
- Connect the printer and scanner and produce a test page or scan.
- Attach Bluetooth devices and check reconnection after sleep.
- Connect an external display and test the resolution and scaling you need.
- Open representative documents, photos, and media from a copy of your data.
- Visit every essential web service and test sign-in, uploads, downloads, printing, and two-factor authentication.
- Check suspend, resume, shutdown, and startup more than once.
If a critical test fails, search the project’s current hardware documentation for the exact component and decide whether a supported driver, a different distribution, a replacement peripheral, or a different operating system is realistic. Do not erase Windows hoping that an unverified fix will appear later.
Understand the erase point
Installing an operating system to the internal drive or accepting an automatic partitioning option can remove Windows and its files. Read every partitioning screen carefully. If you need a dual-boot arrangement, understand that it adds storage, bootloader, update, and recovery complexity; it is not a substitute for a backup. For many home users, a verified backup and a clean installation are easier to maintain than an improvised dual-boot system.
Migration plans for common households
Browser-only household computer
Choose ChromeOS Flex only after the exact model passes Google’s certification and the live test confirms the network, audio, printing, and other daily functions. Move files into the storage and services you have tested, then install with a recovery plan. If certification is unavailable or your workflow requires local Windows software, test a full Linux desktop or plan a replacement instead.
Home office with documents and peripherals
Test Mint and Ubuntu with real documents and the actual printer, scanner, webcam, and display. Confirm that your office suite preserves formatting and that any required templates, fonts, macros, or collaboration features work. If one device is indispensable and has no Linux support, retaining Windows through a verified ESU route or buying a supported Windows 11 PC may cost less in lost time.
Specialist or Windows-only work
Do not make the operating-system change the experiment. Identify a supported Windows 11 replacement first, or use ESU as a short, verified bridge while arranging one. Keep the old PC offline except when necessary and avoid treating continued bootability as proof that the security risk has disappeared.

Common failure points and recovery choices
The computer is not on the Flex list
Do not assume a nearby model is equivalent. Try the live environment only if you accept that unsupported hardware may have missing functions and no Google support. A Linux live test or supported Windows replacement is safer when the PC is absent from the certification list.
Wi-Fi or graphics work poorly
Record the exact adapter or graphics model and test another distribution or a documented driver path before installation. If the problem affects basic connectivity or display output, stop the migration and restore the previous system or use another computer.
A required application has no replacement
Separate “has a similar name” from “supports the required workflow.” Check file compatibility, plug-ins, automation, offline operation, and licensing. If the application is genuinely Windows-only, choose supported Windows hardware or a verified temporary ESU route.
The backup cannot be opened
Do not continue with partitioning. Reconnect the source Windows installation, make a fresh copy to another device, and open sample files from both copies. Recovering a failed backup after an erase is more difficult than delaying the installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The machine becomes too slow
Measure the specific task that is slow—boot, browser tabs, storage access, graphics, or a background service—rather than assuming a new operating system will solve every hardware bottleneck. More memory or a healthy storage device may help, but do not buy upgrades until you know the component and the new operating system support it.
How to make the decision
Use this sequence:
- Confirm whether a supported Windows 11 configuration is possible.
- List applications and devices that cannot fail.
- Choose ChromeOS Flex only for a certified, browser-centered device.
- Choose Mint or Ubuntu only after live testing proves the required hardware and software work.
- Choose ESU only as a verified, limited transition route whose terms match your edition and region.
- Choose a supported Windows 11 replacement when Windows-specific requirements dominate or testing reveals unacceptable gaps.
Include installation effort, learning time, backup media, possible peripheral replacement, paid software or support, and the value of your time in the total-cost comparison. No universal price ranking exists here: hardware condition, licensing, region, and support choices determine the real amount.
Maintenance after the move
Enable automatic updates for the new operating system where practical, keep recovery information current, and continue testing backups. Recheck support dates for the exact release and device combination rather than assuming that an old computer remains covered forever. Keep a written list of installed applications and hardware so a future migration is a controlled process instead of an emergency.
For ChromeOS Flex, monitor the certified-until date and model notes. For Mint or Ubuntu, follow the project’s current release and security guidance. For an ESU-enrolled Windows 10 device, track the enrollment period and plan the supported Windows 11 move before coverage ends.
Frequently asked questions
Can an unsupported Windows 10 PC keep running?
Yes. End of support does not automatically shut the computer down. It means the ordinary stream of security fixes, quality updates, features, and technical assistance has ended, so continued internet use carries increasing risk.
